Incorrect matching of "Plays/Last Played" when syncing

When I sync, sometimes the tunes played in the shuffle are incorrectly matched with a different tune in iTunes. It appears that when this happens, it is true of all tunes on the iPod.  Is this a known problem? Is there a solution?

I've had a similar thing, and it has happened since I updated iTunes to version 8. ***** to be me.
Previously, the little blue circle showing if a podcast was played or not played button showed next to podcasts on my Shuffle in the same way that it shows on podcasts in my library. The Shuffle also kept track of the date that the podcasts were played, and I think it was accurate in that.
Now it doesn't keep track of what's been played and what hasn't. I'm now worse off than I was before. I'd like to revert to a previous version of iTunes to get the functionality back.

  • Transfering Songs/Plays/Last Played Stats, etc. From iPod to iPod

What's up this has been confusing me. I just got an 80 GB (classic) iPod today, and I wanna put all tha songs, plays, last played stats, etc. from my 30 GB (color/photo) iPod all onto my 80 GB iPod. I plugged both iPods into my desktop computer, and they both opened up in iTunes. I tried dragging tha songs from my 30 gig to my 80 gig, and it's not allowing me. I made it so my 80 GB iPod will manually be updated by me. I was able to transfer a song from my regular iTunes library onto my 80 gig easily. I just want to really be able to transfer every song & song stat from my 30 gig to my 80 gig. I don't wanna re-add all 3,185 songs onto my iTunes library 'cause it'll screw up spins, last played & date added stats. Please someone answer me and tell me if it's possible to do an iPod to iPod transfer!

Aight I just went to Best Buy today and they said you can't do an iPod 2 iPod transfer (unless it's a Zune 2 Zune transfer). I brought up what I found yesterday (about tha iPod 2 iPod thing I found online), and they said that's like tha only way, so whatever. I had my mom pay $40 for tha thing from http://theboysdownunder.com/

  • Podcast play count reset when syncing multiple devices

I have noticed some odd behavior since upgrading iTunes to version 10. My wife and I each have an iPhone, iPad, and an iPod nano. I have several playlists that I sync to each of my devices. The problem comes when I play some podcasts on one device, and other podcasts on another device. I sync one device, the play count updates. I sync one of the other devices, and the play count updates on some songs, but is deleted on others. I can tell which tracks have been reset because they still have a Last Played Date. It appears that the device with the most advanced time overwrites the play count in the library.
Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this behavior?
    Doc

After much faffing, I have finally found out what to do. I've been stupid. Or maybe the whole sync thing isn't clear or intuitive, but probably I've been stupid.
I'm posting this because I couldn't find a definitive answer anywhere and because lots of people had similar questions to me.
The following settings work as I would expect them to. That is:
    1. I have all my iTunes content on my iPod touch (not just some tracks, but all 8186 of them)
    2. When I rate a track on the iPod, I expect that rating to copy into iTunes when I sync
    3. I don't expect all 8186 songs to be wiped from my iPod and replaced again every time I sync; i.e. I only want any new ratings/artwork/tracks in iTunes to be duplicated on my iPod
So, here are my settings which work for me, at least:
    1. In *iTunes Preferences*, on the Devices tab, *Prevent iPods and iPhones from syncing automatically* is unchecked
    2. When the iPod is connected to my Mac, when clicking the iPod in the sidebar;
    a) on the Summary tab, *Open iTunes when this iPod is attached* is unchecked
(I'm not sure if this makes a difference, but I usually already have iTunes open when connecting the iPod)
    b) on the Music tab, *Sync Music:* and *Entire music library* are checked
    3. I then click Sync at the bottom of that tab and, lo and behold, everything syncs properly.
Prior to this, I did have to go through that tedious process of having everything removed from the iPod and replaced, but it seems that that was a one-off chore and now things seem OK.
If you're syncing Apps, Calendar, Contacts, etc. too, then those settings can be checked in the Applications and Info tabs and that seems to function properly as well.
This may seem basic and obvious to some, but there does appear to be a lot of confused folks out there!

  • How do I get version 11 to update "Plays" & "Last Play?"

Upgraded iTunes to 11.0 and the system no longer automatically updates the "Last Play" date or "Plays" number.  Any solutions?

I had the same problem.  From the following thread, if you turn off the crossfade, that solves the issue.  Seems to be working for me, although it's silly you have to turn off a feature to get that to work.

  • Some Music playing on iPhone, but fine when sync'd...until

I came across something quite strange with my iPhone this afternoon.
Some of my albums/songs were not playing. On some albums, only a few songs played. And sometimes, whole albums were dead. And to test the files, I sync'd it up to the mac, and played the tracks through iTunes. The songs played fine.
The problem could've very well have been an issue with the tracks, until the played over iTunes. That theory, out the window.
I've restored once, rebooted several times, and nothing is fixed.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    Justin

    Allan,
Hi. The music was from another source, other than the store. i thought of this too, so I tried to convert one of the dead songs(at least, dead on the iPhone itself), into AAC, from MP3... and at least now the playhead moved... but still no sound.
If it was just a corrupted file, or maybe a compression issue... I'd be okay with simply getting a non-corrupted/fresh copy of the song and re-importing. But, the thing that confuses me, is that the songs are playing just fine when sync'd, through iTunes.
And, as far as I know, there is no alias system for songs exported out onto the iPhone, to link back to the master(like in iPhoto). So, these songs are playing... just not through the iPhone iPod.

  • Problem when syncing: won't update itunes play count/last played etc

My old 2g shuffle was capable of updating play count/last played and adding songs to the recently played playlist when synced to my itunes.
Seems my new 3g shuffle can't do this.
I remember the trick with the 2g was to make sure it was switched off first before connecting/syncing, but I've tried all sorts of different combo's with the 3g and nothing will make it update song stats in itunes.
How can I make it update my itunes?

Ok, cool, I figured it out:-) Just in case anyone ever has the same problem, here's a quick rundown:
Basically it's the same problem you can get with 2nd gen shuffles if you're manually managing songs. So I just unticked manually manage music in the device summary and got the shuffle to sync music from a playlist I created/dumped all the songs I wanted into.

  • "Last played" syncing when manual managing?

I'm looking around because i'm unable to sync "last played" and counters from my ipod nano to itunes, having the "manual managing" option turned on.. anyone helping?? ;D
    Thanking in advance,
    ark0n3

    (Off topic)
    Kae,
I remember I used to manually manage my iPod's songs
with a playlist, too. There was a time when I only
had a 1 GB iPod, and my library was bigger than that,
so it was convenient to to that. So you're not alone.
Recently, however, I switched over to syncing a
playlist for each of my nanos. While I can say that
it's nice to use the auto-sync feature, probably the
major reason that I auto-sync my iPods is that there
is more potential for problems to occur.
(Sometimes I feel like I am running my own lab with
experiments... I do things to try to provoke error
messages with iTunes. And, if I get the error message
that I was seeking, I'm so excited, and sometimes
those experiments can indirectly give me information
on how to possibly troubleshoot that error with users
    on here.
But most of the time, I just do it out of curiosity,
and nothing really practical becomes of it.)
    -Kylene
I guess I prefer being more in control which is why I choose to manually manage. Not to mention, not all of my songs in iTunes is in a playlist of any sort and I don't really have the patience to sit there and figure out what plalist to create for every song besides the all too simple SPL by Artist. As for my 30 GB Video that I was given for Valentines (it was a sweet thought but I'm beginning to fee like the crazy iPod lady since people keep giving them to me! My RED was a Christmas gift from my mom because she didn't realize I already had an 8gb! But I digress...) I have yet to put any music on it. Just a few video performances that my boyfriend that I didn't get to go to and a few random music videos. Hardly ever use the thing but I plan to testing out how many of my CD's I can load on it in full....just out of curiousity.
Again, off topic so sorry if this upsets the original poster!

  • ITunes Last Played does not update when syncing from iPod

When I synch any of my Ipods, the last played field does not update in Itunes.
If I play the song from Itunes. (11.1.5)  Last Played  works fine.
I tried the crossfade solution, but that did not work. My crossfade was already not selected.
    Any other thoughts?
    Thanks

As if by magic it is now working. I went away from the mac for a couple of hours, came back and it started to work. This is scary as I would expect this kind of action on a Mickysoft machine but not a Mac. Ho Hum - at least the problem has been sorted even if I don't know how.

  • Sync play count, last played, and rating with iOS 5

From other threads (https://discussions.apple.com/message/16563011#16563011 and https://discussions.apple.com/message/16505730#16505730 for example) it is clear that there are some problems with play count, last played, and rating information updating and syncing under iOS 5. I have at least a partial solution. I am posting it here instead of under one of the existing threads because 1) some discussions seem to be confusing the difference between updating the iOS 5 device data and syncing the updated data to the computer, and 2) some of the discussions are focused iPhone, and though the problem appears similar I only have an iPod touch to test the solution on.
First of all, this is not a new problem. Prior to iOS 5, I would plug my iPod Touch into the computer and not see any play count or last played data for songs I knew I had just listened to. I discovered that if I clicked (in my computer's iTunes display of the iPod) on one song that I had recently listened to, it would suddenly display play count and last played for all the songs played since the last update. I could then transfer this playlist data (more on this in a minute) to the corresponding songs on the computer. Under iOS 5, this no longer works, and in fact causes the new play count and last played data on the iPod to be lost. However, under iOS 5 there is a way to get this information to update, even though you don't see it when you first connect to the computer.
To make this work, you have your iPod set on Manually manage music and videos under the Summary tab of the iPod settings in iTunes. I have messed around with this for hours, including several restores and resets of my iPod touch, and have found no way to get this to work under various Sync Music options. I have been using the Manually manage mode for years because I use my iPod with numerous different iTunes Libraries on several different external hard drives.
Here's the trick: Manually manage must be in effect before you connect the iPod to the computer. After your iPod shows up in the iTunes interface on your computer, in the main view (where it shows the different tabs at the top and capacity at the bottom) there is a Sync button at the very bottom right. Click on this and wait for it to go through the Sync steps (don't worry, you're not losing anything), and, voila, when you go to the songs (on the iPod) you have listened to since the last time you connected to the computer, the play count and last played data will be there.
Unfortunately, it's not a simple matter to get this data synced to the computer, but it can be done. At first I thought that once I got the data to show up on the iPod I could go to the Music tab and Sync Music to get the playlist data to the computer, but this does not work. It will sync the play count and last played data that are on the computer to the iPod, overriding the newer data. The way I have been getting my playlist data from my iPod to my computer without ever changing the Manually manage setting is by using the Copy Tag Info Tracks To Tracks script from Doug's AppleScripts for iTunes <http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=copytinforackstotracks>. This isn't hard to download or install or use and copies playlist information very quickly.
I have never had a problem with play count or last played on my 2nd generation nano, which still works beautifully. As far as I can tell, play count and last played have never worked well on the iPod touch; there are threads in discussions complaining about this from years ago. It would be nice if Apple would recognize that these are extremely important features to many users and make it a priority to make these basics work before (or while) adding a lot of other fancy features.

Just for posterity in case anyone else ever has a similar problem.
I found out I can work around my problem, but I have limitations. The only time it'll update the correct songs is after I restore it and then add the initial songs on to the Shuffle. The key is to not ever have a situation where I reshuffle the order of those songs. If I ever shuffle to better alphebatize or categorize things, the sync updating screws everything up. If say Song #3 on my Shuffle's playlist after the intitial transfer gets moved around to being anything other than the third song played, my Shuffle/iTunes will still think that song has been played although the Song #3 I actually listened to after the sync update will be different. Now I have to carefully compose and place what songs I want loaded on since I can't mess around with the playlist setup at all.
I know Apple support would likely blame my Shuffle for the problem (it's over 6 years old now). But it's funny how this only happened right after I installed 11.0. The update to 11.0.2 did nothing.

  • Last played won't update from sync

A couple of days ago I started up iTunes and it asked to accept the license agreement. When I clicked agree my library came up but all my Last Played and play counts had been erased. I reloaded an old library from six months ago and then tried to sync my iPods to update my last played counts but it only worked for about 300 files. I have over 40000 mp3s in my library. I know if you change the file in iTunes it won't sync but there's no way that many files have been changed in six months. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

With more testing, it turns out to be just Wow Hits 2012.   All my other iTunes-Store-purchased music is updating properly.

  • Has anyone managed to get play count/last played to sync?

I can live with the podcasts being borked, it's prompted me to use an app (hello iCatcher!) which I had been planning to do for a while. I'm still learning its ways, but it feels a lot more comfortable already.
The thing that I absolutely cannot understand is how ratings, playcount and last played times are not synchronising. I've a number of smart playlists based on these attributes and I haven't been able to get them to sync up since I enabled Match on my iPhone.
So I've got an iPhone which I sync with iTunes on a Mac. Everything's patched up to the latest version.
Has anyone successfully had any successful syncs? The smart playlists are just a joke - I'd expect the track listings to be comparable between devices, but they just aren't.
This is a beta product which some glaring functionality holes. How Apple can think it's worth paying for is beyond me. The smart playlist functionality has been working seamlessly for years on iTunes ... but it's broken. And I paid for the product that broke it. I'm feeling very let down.

I haven't managed to get any playcount, ratings etc to sync. There are so many issues with this version of iTunes Match I cannot believe Apple released it.
The order of tracks in playlists doesn't match iTunes on my Mac, selecting a folder of playlists in iTunes on my iPhone hangs the phone and sometimes crashes it, metadata doesn't sync, some albums are split into 2, etc.
Looking forward to an update soon.

  • ITunes no longer updating "last played" after signing up for Match

The subject says it all. Aftter signing up for Match and going through the whole upload/download dance, iTunes no longer records "Last Played." Other fields, like play count, might be effected too, but haven't check. Anyway to get this feature back? I use it a lot.

This subject has been discussed in-depth on this forum. A search will turn up multiple already-existing threads.
Yes, last played dates from iOS devices do not sync back to iTunes. This is a bug that has not been fixed yet by Apple.

  • Last played data not syncing

This is the first time I've had this problem. I synced the iPod tonight (click-wheel version) and the last played data since the last sync didn't migrate into iTunes. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes without any luck, and several attempts at syncing all gave the same result.
Any suggestions? My iPod hasn't been giving me a whit of trouble that I could tell.
Windows PC, Dell Optiplex SX270   Windows XP

iTunes match has been having problems with play counts and last played data for a long time now. It actually seemed as if it was fixed before the iOS 6 release it would just take a couple days for the information to update. Sometimes it would update the play counts by 2 instead of 1... Now it seems as if it's broken again. I've been keeping my eye on a certain song I purchased Thursday and watched over the weekend. So far all that's updated is the rating and it gave it 2 play counts (I've played it around 5 times) it still does not have the last played data..
I hope they can at least get iTunes Match back to where it was before the release, at least we had some kind of update...

  • "Last played" updating incorrectly after play on Shuffle (1G)

This may be related to "Wrong Songs Appearing as Last Played" and "More problems with the play count updating". My impression is that this symptom appeared in the last few weeks.
I load songs onto my iPod Shuffle (first generation), play some of them, then sync with iTunes on my Mac. Some songs are marked with a Last Played time of when I did the sync. I'm pretty sure they are NOT the songs that played. (And I think its less (roughly half) as many songs as were played.) Songs that WERE played still have Last Played times from weeks or months ago.

I did uninstall - reinstall itunes,
then restored my ipod shuffle (1st gen)
and I still do have the same problem. It seems that last played songs are randomly updated. Some of the songs I just listened before connecting ipod to itunes are still not on last played lists. If I play them on itunes on my laptop/pc they do appear on last played list, but not if songs are played on ipod.
So, still problems with play count updating.
