Incorrect naming of Original Folders in Import Photos

When importing photos and choosing to organize by Original Folders the initial letter or number of the original folder is dropped by LR - eg if the folder is called Rivers, LR writes it as ivers. Any clues as to what is happening please? Am using MacBook Pro 10.4.9.

Even spookier still - if the folder is copied from Mac HD to external HD and then imported into LR the full folder name reads just fine!
My method is simple - to import photos as 'Copy photos as DNG and import', organizing by Original Folder.

Lightroom 5 is freezing in the Library module. I can't access folders or import photos!!! HELP!!!

Dont know if this is a new occurrence or very many details but try changing "permissions".
Navigate to the following folder: /Users/[user name]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom
Highlight the Lightroom folder and chose File > Get Information
Under Sharing & Permission, verify that your have Read & Write Privileges. If not, click the padlock icon at the lower right, enter your password when prompted, then click the Read only entry and select Read & Write.

  • Import Photos from DVD  - Reference to Original DVD Title?

i installed the trial version of Lightroom 2.0 and tested it out putting a DVD in.. it imported all the thumbnails fine... but when you take out the DVD after its done cataloging all the icons, the program doesn't tell you the name of the DVD that the photo folders belong to... it just gives a message referring to the fact that the "image is not available" when you click on an icon... which makes sense of course because the DVD isn't there, but... there's no indication like "please insert DVD labeled "PhotoDVD090" or whatever ...
I looked through the preferences to see if there was a way of turning on a feature that would be able to prompt me to put in the correct DVD when a particular thumbnail was clicked... this, I believe would be an invaluable and time saving tool for those of us with tons of off-line media.

Thanks for the reply.. I appreciate it much. I know what you're trying to say but I have searched for a program that will import photos from a DVD, remember it by serial number (of the physical media), allow you to type in a DVD name or use the one originally provided when you burned the DVD, then store all thumbnails on the computer, remove the DVD, still have the thumbnails on the computer permanently and when you click a thumbnail, if the appropriate DVD is not in the drive it will prompt you for the title of the DVD..
simple simple simple... The fact that Lightroom doesn't have such a feature has prompted me to remove it completely from my system..
the fact that ACDsee Photo Manager 10 DOES have this feature, and costs a mere $29.99 has prompted me to get it instead.. it works like a dream... you can browse all your images, search by any criteria imaginable.. and then when you find the image you wish to work on.. a double click will pop of a box saying please insert such and such a dvd... you put in the DVD then click edit and up it pops in photoshop (or whatever other editing software you specify).. magic... Lightroom really needs to address this lacking option.

  • Incorrect subfolder dates when importing photos from camera

I installed the trial version of Photoshop Elements 10 on my iMac a few days ago to try it out. When I import photos from a camera (I have tried with 2 different cameras) in Photoshop Elements Organizer, I am asked to select a naming format for the subfolders. I select "Shot Date (yyyy mm dd)", but no matter what, I always get folders with strange dates eg. 1913 11 05, 1970 06 10. The photos themselves within the subfolders have the right dates, so I am not sure where the problem is.
    Can someone help?
    Thanks

Make sure your prefs are set to date shot - there are a number of choices.
Open the Organizer and click Edit à Preferences à Camera or Card Reader
Choose your setting from the dropdown menu and click OK.

  • Incorrect rotation for imported photos

    Greetings,
I just bought a new iMac from a retail Apple Store today, and I wanted to migrate all of my photos from my Windows 7 PC to the iMac.  First, I updated all of the software on the iMac to the latest versions.  I copied all of the photos (about 4,000) from the PC to a USB thumb drive.  I inserted the thumb drive into the iMac.  Then I opened iPhoto and imported all of the photos from the thumb drive.
The problem is that many of the imported photos display in iPhoto with the incorrect orientation.  They all look correct on the PC.
I can't perceive a pattern as to which photos are rotated correctly and which are rotated incorrectly.  My photo collection contains a mix of portrait and landscape photos, and I can find examples of both types which are rotated correct and incorrectly.
If I select one of the incorrectly rotated photos and click File->Reveal in Finder->Original File, interestingly, the thumbnail for the file appears correctly rotated in the folder.  If I open the file, it appears incorrectly rotated in the preview.  Clicking File->Reveal in Finder->Modified File produces a file with an incorrectly rotated thumbnail.
Because I'm dealing with over 4,000 files, the number of incorrectly rotated photos is in the hundreds, so I really don't want to go through my entire library and manually rotate the bad ones.  Any help is much appreciated.

After some experimentation, I think I tracked down the cause:
Today on my PC, I tried running a lossless auto-rotater program on all of the photos.  Sure enough, many of the photos that previously appeared to be rotated correctly were rotated incorrectly by the auto-rotater.  These incorrectly rotated photos match the incorrectly rotated photos in iPhoto on the Mac.  All of the incorrectly rotated photos seemed to be dated from 2007 or earlier.  I vaguely recall using some third-party app on an older PC back then that would automatically extract photos from my camera and losslessly auto-rotate them.  My suspicion is that this app would rotate the photos without correctly adjusting the orientation component of the EXIF data.
My solution was to browse through all of the photos caught by my auto-rotater and fix them manually.  Since they were all from 2007 or older, it wasn't so bad to go through all of them.
Thanks to everyone for the help.  You were clearly on the right track.

  • When using Iphoto to import photo from existing folder, what happens if I delete the photo in Iphoto ? Will the original file in the folder be deleted too?

When using Iphoto to import photo from existing folder to iphoto, what happens if:
    1. I delete that photo in iphoto? will the original file in the folder be deleted too ?
    2.  when importing, does the hard disk store 2 versions of the photo, hence occupying additional space in the harddisk?

1 - no  --  iPhoto only manages fiel within the iPhoto library - it does not ever do anything with files outside the library
2 - No idea what you are asking - by default (and strongly recommended) iPhoto copies the original to the iPhoto library and you delete the source file outside the iPhoto library - iPhoto alwasy has at least two versions of every photo and some times three - it always have the original, a thumbnail and once a photo is modified a preview - this is not optional - if it is not what you want then iPhoto is not the correct progrtam to be using for phopto management

  • When I try to connect my iPhone to my laptop to import photos and videos it says there are no files or folders under "Apple Iphone". My laptop recognises my phone and my camera roll has around 300 photos and videos but none of them come up on my laptop?

The memory on my Phone is really bad so i cant store much. The pictures i am trying to import are really important and i cant lose them. My phone has been playing up a lot and im afraid of losing the pictures so tried to import them onto my laptop. Its a windows 8 and every time i connect my iphone a window automatically opens titled "Apple iphone" but underneath it says "no files or folders". How can i resolve this?
Also the apple store have told me not updating may be causing problems but i cant update due to no space. i have 3 apps, around 300 photos/videos and no music. it is 16gb so i dont know why im having this problem

Does this happen if you try to Import to Library within iPhoto, or is it when you connect your camera (and which is set to automatically use iPhoto) that this error message occurs?
If you open Image Capture > Preferences is iPhoto selected as the choice when a camera is connected?

  • Is it possible to control the naming convention used by Aperture when importing photos?  If so, how

When I import photos from my camera, I have them placed into projects based on the date the photos were taken. However, I do not like the naming convention used by Aperture as it causes the projects to sort into a non-chronologial order. The convention is MMM-DD-YYYY and I want to change it to YYYY-MM-DD. Is it possible in Aperture 3.2.4 to do this?

In the Import  panel you can edit the preset for the file name format to "Image year - image month - image day - index" for example; the preset for folder names seems to be gone in Aperture 3,3 - at least I cannot find it any longer. You only seem to be able to enter the folder name manually in the Import panel.

How do I import photos to iPad2 from different folders in my Mac?
I have a few folders of photos in my mac that I want to be on my iPad2. How do I go about on doing that?
It seems like I need to put all the folders into one folder and point iTunes to that main folder.
The thing is I don't want to copy them (waste of space) and I don't want to move them (my photos are organized).
So is there a way for me to import photos from different folders in my mac to my iPad2?
    Thank you!
    BTW... I don't use iPhoto.

Find software (which may not exist) to export them in a photo format (jpeg, tiff). IPhoto will not do it

  • Import photos and video into different folders

Hi, is there any way to import photos and videos into seperate folders?
I use lightroom to manage my photos and videos, but the videos are much larger so I prefer they are stored in a different location.
I can import them together and drag the photos to a new folder, but this does not create the same folder heirarchy as importing them would.
Currently I import once for photos and onece for videos, but I'd prefer to just "import"
    Thanks!

Switch to the Finder app and open its preferences.
Remove the check mark on the items you don't want displayed in the Sidebar tab.
The originals are not removed from the machine.

  • When importing photos into LR, the year is incorrect. How to fix?

When I first created my Lightroom catalog, each new folder would fall under 2012, and within that folder would be the date, so for New Year's Eve "2012-12-31". Now that it is 2013, when I import photos into my 2013 folder, Lightroom instantly tries to create a subfolder of 2012 and another subfolder in that with today's date. I can't seem to get Lightroom to stop doing this. See the image below to see what I mean.
I'd like it to just put today's importing images into a subfolder under the 2013 folder, called "2013-01-25". It still wants to create this 2012 folder. Sorry if I am not using the correct wording but this is what is happening so everything shot in 2013 keeps getting put into a new 2012 folder each time.
As you can see I want the subfolders to be organized and Lightroom already has the date format correct. Please help me with this.
    Thank you very much.
I am running Lightroom 4.3 on a 13" Macbook Air with Mac OSX 10.8.2, 1.8 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory, with RAW photos from a Canon EOS 6D.

As far as iOS is concerned naming or labeling your photos is pointless since it's a "visual and tactile" device where you touch or swipe what you see or a folder opens to show you it's entire contents. IPad and iPhone was never intended to search for a picture as such like you would on your desktop or laptop.
