Incorrect password error on local account - can't log in

Yesterday I set-up my father's new Toshiba Satellite C55-B5300. I set the computer up with a local account rather then a Microsoft Live.
After the first restart and trying to log on today, I was unable to access the account. When entering the password I instantly got "The password is incorrect. Try again." I checked to make sure the password was correct. Made sure caps lock was disabled
and used the preview option to see I was typing in correctly. I must have tried enter the password 50 times and then finally it logged in.
Once logged in, using the command prompt, I opened "netplwiz" and unchecked the option for the user to require a password. I then restarted the computer. Upon restart it instantly went to "Welcome" with the loading circle, but quickly came
back with the incorrect password error.
On this attempt to log in, I've tried typing the password over and over. Sometimes it will instantly give me the error and sometimes it goes to the welcome with loading circle before eventually giving me the password error.
I have no idea how I got logged in the first time and now I have no idea how to get back in.

Hi,
According to your description ,it seems that the machine is stuck in the login interface.
I recommend you to get into the advanced startup option to solve this issue.
To get into the advanced startup option:
Keep press Shift and choose the restart option from the power icon.
1.Choose Automatic Repair to repair the machine
Troubleshoot \Advanced options \Automatic Repair
2.If #1 won`t help ,considering this issue happened after the reinstallation,it may be caused by the corrupt installation.I recommend you to reinstall the machine again .
Best regards

  • STILL can't disable SMB file sharing because of incorrect password error

    Hi Everybody,
A few weeks ago, there was a thread at
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3211072
I'm having the same issue, and it's a real security problem, since I have no way of turning off file sharing for a user account.
The thread discussed the inability to disable SMB file sharing because Lion returned an incorrect password error message for the shared account -- even when the user typed in the correct password. A user named SanderFromH offered a fix at
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16773220#16773220
It involves locating and copying the file at /var/db/dslocal/nodes/Default/users/<user>.plist
Is this the only way people know to fix this issue, or has anyone found an easier way? If no, can someone please tell me how to locate this file. When I search spotlight for a directory called dslocal, I find nothing. Can someone please provide step by step instructions for fixing this issue?
    Thanks so much.

Hi, and welcome to the community!
So was this Spotify account originally created with facebook and not created with Spotify then linked to facebook? It sounds like it if you login with an email.
Can you log in on the Spotify web player?

  • Incorrect Password error and odd behavior

I am unable to successfully enter the password on one of the Blackberry devices at my company - I get "incorrect password" even though I have verified multiple ways that the password is correct.  We have a BES server and I have done a Set Password and Lock Handheld on the user's account (several times), then removed the battery to do a reset on the device itself.  Also, when I connect the device to a computer running the Blackberry Desktop Manager, the newly reset password functions correctly.  I have also verified that the keystrokes on the device are correct -- i.e. after entering the password incorrectly (on purpose) several times and being prompted to type the word "blackberry", the password does show correctly on the next password attempt.
The most strange behaviour is that if I enter the correct password, I get the "incorrect password" error but it doesn't seem to count it as a failed attempt, i.e. the next time I try it doesn't show attempt 2 of 5, 3 of 5 etc, it still thinks you are on your first attempt.  If I intentionally enter the wrong password, it then increases the count the way it is supposed to.
Has anyone seen these kind of symptoms and know a workaround?  I am trying to avoid wiping and resetting this user's handheld if at all possible.

Sorry, there just is not any way around entering the password correctly. No workarounds.
Remember to check if you accidently capitalizing a character, or if the ALT key is despressed to enter a number.

There is nothing that you can do to get rid of the balance on your own. Contact iTunes Store Support and seek their assistance. I believe that they can reset your balance for you.

you have definitely tried the correct steps, all you would need to do now is a back up & restore to factory settings. If after that the issue remains then you would most likely need a replacement unit.

I can log in with a Skype account can't log in with a Microsoft account

weird. isn't there an option for signing in with a microsoft account? do you have a skype name and password? if that's the case, then it's mostly likey that the only way to get into skype is using your skype name and password.
    it's the most likley explataion.

  • OD Accounts can't log in

My client has OS X clients (10.4.9, 10.4.10) authenticating to OD on OS X Server 10.4.10. At least once a week, a different eMac workstation cannot login to the server. The login windows shakes. No network accounts can login, but local account can. The workstations are hardwired to the network. Here is a list of what I have tried:
    1. deleted mcx_cache with Netinfo Manager
    2. repaired permissions
    3. ran maintenance scripts
    4. deleted Managed Preferences Directory
    5. deep cleaned all caches with Tiger Cache Cleaner
    6. updated prebindings after installing all updates
I have manually bound the workstations to the server via Directory Access, configuring LDAPv3.
The only thing that seems to resolve the issue is to deleted all local preferences from //Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences, but then I must reconfigure everything. To do that, I must be onsite, as I lose Remote Administrator access. Any ideas? This has been going on for years, over various versions of both the server and workstation os. TIA.

Probably get a better answer at the OS X Server forum.

  • Changed my exchange email on work computer (req. every 3 months), now I can't get past incorrect password error on iPad.

I'm required to change my exchange email password every 3 months on my work computer.  Now I can't get past the incorrect email error on my iPad.  It won't accept my new or old exchange password and won't let me get past the error to do anything else on my iPad.  Hitting cancel doesn't help, the error just comes back a second later, so my iPad is useless for anything else and I can't get to Settings to either enter the new password for the account or delete and re-enter the account. Is there some kind of soft reset I can do? Any other suggestions?

I saw some other posts on the web and completely powered off of the iPad.  Then turned it on again and was able to quickly go to Settings and update the password.  So this is no longer an issue for me.  Just a pain that this is what I'll have to do every three months when I have to change my exchange password again.

  • Su incorrect password error

    Hello friends,
I'm using RHEL 5, the problem I'm facing is that the su command doesn't work. If I logged in as root user I can switch to other user as it doesn't requires password but when I try to revert back to root account it gives me error "su : incorrect password ". Similarly I'm unable to switch from one user account to another.
I've tried some steps mentioned on other forums but none of them worked for me, like setting permission of on su command, password -u command to unlock accounts etc.
Someone recommended to change /etc/pam.d/su and /etc/pam.d/sshd but being newbie I don't know how to change them, the contents of these file are:
    */etc/pam.d/su*
    auth sufficient pam_rootok.so
    # Uncomment the following line to implicitly trust users in the "wheel" group.
    #auth sufficient pam_wheel.so trust use_uid
    # Uncomment the following line to require a user to be in the "wheel" group.
    #auth required pam_wheel.so use_uid
    auth include system-auth
    account sufficient pam_succeed_if.so uid = 0 use_uid quiet
    account include system-auth
    password include system-auth
    session include system-auth
    session optional pam_xauth.so*/etc/pam.d/sshd:*
    auth include system-auth
    account required pam_nologin.so
    account include system-auth
    password include system-auth
    session optional pam_keyinit.so force revoke
    session include system-auth
    session required pam_loginuid.soPlease help.
    Regards

The files /etc/pam.d/su and /etc/pam.d/sshd don't go bad by itself. I would not screw around with it unless you know exactly what you are doing. I suggest to leave the original files in place.
Please provide an example including the complete commands and screen output you are using to demonstrate the problem.
Are you running any background tasks that use the su command with incorrect or expired passwords that cause acounts to get locked?
Btw, to return to the previous user from a su command you can simply exit, logout or use Ctrl-d.

  • Sharing with SMB - Keep getting "Incorrect Password" Error

When I try to enable SMB file sharing by clicking the check box next to my account name in the Sharing Preferences, I get a dialog box asking for my password, and when I type it in, I get "incorrect password".  I am trying to share files on my MacBook Pro with a Windows 7 computer.
    Thank you.

Dan-o, yes I have had this issue since I upgraded to lion 10.7 from snow leopard 10.6.8.
    No cure yet.
    Notes of curiosity:
    • only seem to affect one admin user on osx. Was original user on snow leopard. Password is always rejected as incorrect when attempting to set smb access in sharing system press
    • does not affect any subsequent admin users that are added. These can set DMV sharing password. Password is accepted
    • same for any standard (non-admin) users. Their passwords are accepted when sharing for smb
    • setting up a "root" user (active dir tool) and having this alter smb sharing does not help
    • a fresh install (clean initialise) file system with lion DOES NOT EXHIBIT THIS ISSUE
    • removing /library/preferences/com.apple.smb.sharing.plist also does not help
    • there are no error logs for failed password when attempting the above
    • Use of chmod, chown to reset permissions and acl's makes no difference
    I'm still looking
Hopefully we can turn up solution soon

  • Local Account can't connect to address server

Hi there, since a few days my addresses and calendar are not synced anymore. I found out, I can't connect with my local accounts to my local mac os x server mavericks on the same machine anymore. The same days I changed something on my security and firewall settings, maybe there is a problem. Anyone knows, what I have to do, please?
The following error messages are printed in console log:
04.08.14 05:09:22,738 com.apple.preferences.internetaccounts.remoteservice[27121]: [CardDAVPlugin-ERROR] Unable to find additional info dictionary for key: /principals/__uids__/E276D199-408C-44EA-AA27-9AA0142D3B47/
04.08.14 05:09:23,283 com.apple.preferences.internetaccounts.remoteservice[27121]: [CardDAVPlugin-ERROR] Unable to find additional info dictionary for key: /principals/__uids__/E276D199-408C-44EA-AA27-9AA0142D3B47/
    04.08.14 05:09:23,284 com.apple.preferences.internetaccounts.remoteservice[27121]: [CardDAVPlugin-ERROR] No 'AddlInfoKey' present to save: {

Now I have the first Part of the solution. First I had to empty the Folder ~/Library/Caches/ . Than I deleted the File ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetaccounts_old.plist . Not sure, the last one is necessary. And third step was, I recreated the accounts from inside iCal and the Address Book.
But now I still can't connect from my iPhone to the Server... Any suggestions?

  • Hi ! I got an iPhone 5 from someone who I don't know the real owner. Then I wanna change iCloud on it, but I don't know the password of owner. How can I log out that iCloud account without password ? Please help me, thank you

Thank you, please help me !

How can I log out that iCloud account without password ?
    You can't.
Return the phone to whoever you bought it from and get a refund. Without the previous owners password you will not be able to enter your own iCloud acount, and when you update the phone, you won't be able to re-activate it as it will be locked to the previous owners account.
You should've checked the phone was not locked to someone else's iCloud account BEFORE buying it.

  • Incorrect password error WiFi

I have read several threads in this area with people having the same or similar problems as me and have found no solutions. I have Verizon Fios with a router that uses WEP (yes, I know from reading these posts that WEP is an outdated, poor security system). When I purchased my iPhone it connected to my home network without difficulty, as does my iPad, 2 iTouches, and 4 laptops. I have never had a problem getting any of my wireless devices to connect to the WiFi. Out of the blue a few days ago, my iPhone asked me to enter my password to connect to the WiFi in my home. When I enter the password, the iPhone doesn't connect and gives me the error message "incorrect password for (WiFi name)". I have checked and rechecked the password by re-entering it on other devices, accessing my router to see the settings, etc. I even turned the WEP off on the router so the WiFi was open access and when I tried to connect the iPhone to my now unsecure home network the iPhone gave me an error message that said "unable to connect". I tried all the things listed here in the forums such as forgetting my network, resetting network settings, etc but nothing works, Found that resetting my network settings required me to rejoin all other WiFi networks that were previously familiar to my iPhone and had no problem joining those, even the ones that required passwords. The only WiFi spot my iPhone doesn't seem to like is my home network. I am heistant to go through the trouble of getting a new router, etc when everything else in the house works fine. Also, for all you techno-zealots out there that fill these blogs up about how insecure WEP is, please try to control your urges to make this whole discussion about how much you know about WiFi security and how stupid I am for using WEP. I realize the limitations of WEP and don't care at the moment. Like they say, locks are for honest people. Locking your car door isn't going to stop a real thief from breaking and and stealing it, but it deters some "honest" people for just opening up the door and taking the iPod off of your front seat.
BTW, the only thing new that I have done with my iPhone around the time that this all happened (which may be coincidence) was update Datavault (a password manager for the iPhone) and begin synching it with Dropbox since iTunes stopped supporting the file sharing method of synching.
    Thanks for reading.
