'incorrect PPP option', can't connect to the net

I'm using an iBook powerPC G4, running 10.4.11.
I installed the 2009-001 security update last night, and ran into the 'your network settings have been changed by another application' bug. I've since solved that by deleting files from user / library / preferences / SystemConfiguration.
But now when I try to connect, I'm getting another error message that says 'an incorrect PPP option has been set', and it won't connect.
I'm trying to connect using built-in-ethernet and PPPoE.
I tried resetting my network preferences, like it says here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4505125&#4505125
and that didn't help.
I tried looking for a tmp link in terminal, like it says here:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7424693&#7424693
This is what came up:
ls: tmp: No such file or directory
I also tried repairing permissions with disk utility, which didn't help.
One other thing - when I was trying to solve the network settings bug, I moved a file called pppd to the desktop, but I stupidly didn't write down where I moved it from.
Any ideas? Thanks

Hello cormac.early, and a warm welcome to the forums!
If you have that popup, To stop the pop-up, Go to System Preferences: Security. Check the box next to "Require password to unlock each secure system preference." Then lock Security.
Try this cure for Security update...
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1730909&tstart=0
Actually a few people have cured it by copying the Location, deleting the original, then renaming the new one without the copy.
Then... Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers, for the Airport Interface...
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
Then Apply
I moved a file called pppd to the desktop...
Actually, if you just "moved" it, it's likely still in /var/sbin/, as normally that will only copy it, then you have to Trash the original with a password.

  • Apple TV not connecting to the net

I had my Apple TV connected to my Airport Extreme (Fast Ethernet) wirelessly, out of the blue it stopped syncing with iTunes and would not connect to the net (no You Tube or film trailers).
I tried to plug in a Ethernet cable to my MacBook (IP address is assigned by DHCP and my MacBook connects to the net wirelessly) and it has since started syncing but still would not connect to the internet.
I tried a factory reset from info I found on the Apple site. My Apple TV reverted back to version 1.0 and I had to sync my iTunes stuff again (still connected via a cable directly to my MacBook) however I still can't connect to the net and can't update the software on there.
Does anyone have any ideas as I miss You Tube?

If you are connected directly to a Macbook by ethernet, you will need to ensure you have internet sharing enabled in your system prefs.

Hi there I am having trouble with my outlook express this is the first time it has happened it keeps telling me can't connect to the SMTP server and every password I have tried is incorrect this is for 'iCloud' very frustrating as all our phones are ok

Well I am feeling a bit silly now because that was all I had to do. In the past Workgroup Manager had always opened right up to the list of my users, I never even thought to click on that but apparently that was all that was needed.
I still am not sure how the iChat Server preferences changed themselves on me, but it is not the first time I have had weird "settings" issues with our Snow Leopard Server.
    Thanks!

  • "An incorrect PPP option has been set" issue

I have a USB DSL modem which connects me via my ISP to the net.
I recently had to re-install my OS on my Mac Mini to 10.4.x and I then upgraded the OS to 10.4.11. I have been trying and frustratingly failing to connect to the net. Every time I try I keep getting the "incorrect PPP option has been set" message. I never used to have any issues connecting before the re-install but now this.
I have checked, and double checked, the username and password in my network/internet connect settings but keep getting the same message. I also have an iBook G4 and that connects to the net no problem with the same information and that uses 10.3.9. I have checked the settings and all PPP options are the same.
The one thing that baffles me is that when I enter my password in Network and click Apply Now I get 24 bullets rather than 8 that my password has. The iBook shows 8 bullets. But I am lead to believe this is an Apple security thing that shows that many bullets (?).
I've tried uninstalling & re-installing the USB software, I've also tried deleting some preferences and all I know.
Any Mac gurus out there help?

    Morning MPD,
[This page|http://www.bulldogbroadband.com/residential/products/broadband/equipment.a sp#freewireless2] on Bulldog's website mentions a couple of ethernet based devices (the last one is also wireless, if you don't have wireless cards in your machines then that might be superfluous to needs).
The cheaper of the 2 is only £1 more than the USB modem you have. Try persuading Bulldog to see if you can swap your existing modem for that one.
02 Broadband provide that wireless model (I'm with O2 at present :)) and it seems to work fine wirelessly with Macs. Previously I've had good experience with Netgear routers, but everyone has their favourites. Linksys and D-Link are often also recommended.
Good luck with the reinstallation, I hope that solves this strange problem for you.

  • HELP with PPP error message  please (incorrect PPP option set)

Before, I used my Nokia N70 phone to access the net with its 3G capabilities. I used the wireless settings and connected via Bluetooth. I had to upload the Nokia N70 scripts to my modem folder for this but everything went along fine. One day, I suddenly couldn't connect via my phone anymore and kept on getting the error message:
"Internet Connect- An incorrect PPP option has been set. Please verify your settings and try again."
This error notice keeps on popping up everytime I start my macbook or try to connect via any wireless method. I don't remember changing any PPP settings. Wired LAN/Ethernet still works well, though. Don't know if this started after I updated to 10.5.5.
Then I purchased a flash 3G/HSDPA modem a few days ago (ZTE model). I tried it on my macbook and got the same error message. I hooked it up to my other laptop using windows XP and it worked well.
How do I get my bluetooth connection and my working again? It seems I've tried all PPP set-up combinations possible and don't know what to do.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can give their input.

  • Incorrect PPP option

This is a simple thing, and probably has a simple answer, but it is bugging me. I changed to wireless broadband a long time ago, and ever since when logging on, or waking the computer from sleep, I get a warning message:
"Internet Connect. An incorrect PPP option has been set. Please verify your settings and try again." I hit OK and it disappears. Until the next time. I have cleared the entire PPP page in Network Settings but still the error message appears. It has no effect whatsoever on my broadband wireless, or on anything else. I transferred the settings over to my MacBook Pro when it arrived, but don't have the same problem.
Does anyone know how I can kill this error message, please?

Found a solution yet? I see the same behavior with a Mini OS X 10.4.8 when attempting to dial-up connect. Worked two days ago. No known changes made.

I want to use an old 3 GS iPhone that is no longer in service as a phone now as just an iPod to play music. When I connect the phone to the computer with iTunes running, iTunes says it can't connect to the device because it didn't get a valid response from the device. How can I get the system to recognize the phone, and let me rename it as my iPod, instead of my phone?
As an aside, the current installed operating system on this old iPhone is 4.2.1, but that wasn't one of the selectable options in the operating system list dropdown below. Don't know if that makes any difference.

  • Why can't I buy an In-APP purchase? It says that I can not connect to the iTunes Store and that I will have to contact iTunes Store Support.

    Hey everyone
With my iPhone 4S I purchased the NAVIGON Europe App, downloaded needed files and maps within the App and all worked fine. But when I try to buy certain add-ons via In-App purchase I get a window telling me that it can'T connect to the iTunes store and that I have to contact iTunes store support.
This is what I have already tried to make it work:
Reset my iphone via iTunes (set it up as new iPhone)
Changed itunes store payment option from Click&Buy to credit card
    restarted iPhone several times
    scratched my head
checked restrictions under settings in iPhone: all is correct; in-App purchases allowed
    chewed my lip
finally sent a message to the itunes store support.. waiting for their answer
no changes so far. I still get the same error message.
    Any ideas?

  • Can't connect to the internet right after boot up

Hey guys, I have an interesting problem in which if I try to use internet right after boot up (via scripts) I can't resolve host names. However, if I try to use the internet right after boot up manually I can resolve host names. I had this problem with a script but I've since rewrote it to work around the problem; however I now seem to have this problem with openVPN and I need this to work. I'll use openVPN as my primary example but the situation was the same for my script.
Basically, openVPN starts up via systemd and it can't resolve my server's host name. Even 18 hours later. I have 'resolv-retry infinite' in my conf file which as I understand says 'if you can't resolve the host name keep trying to resolve it indefinitely'. I left my computer on overnight and openVPN still could not connect to my server, despite me being able to ping it, have MySQL get data dumps and replicate from it and other software being able to resolve the server's host name. If I restart openVPN, then it works! I rebooted the computer and let it try for a few minutes to connect and it couldn't. I restarted openVPN manually and it resolved the server's host name, 5 minutes after the computer booted up even though it couldn't connect on it's own the previous night.
Here's openVPN's status as of this post:

Anyone have any idea what could be going on? It seems to me that when a program starts up it takes a snap shot of the current network status and it then uses it, even if it's 10 minutes later and the network has been fully loaded/configured, the program uses that snap shot and can't connect to the DNS.

'Requires=network.target' wasn't in it so I added it but nothing's changed. I've left it in because openVPN does require network.
As I said, I had this problem with a script so I don't think it's anything specific to openVPN. I had a weird occurrence this morning however. When I started the computer up this morning  openVPN worked just fine. However when the computer rebooted openVPN couldn't resolve the host address again.

  • I can't connect with the Time Capsule.

    Hello everyone,
Some years ago, I bought a Time Capsule. Until now, I didn't want to use it as an extern HD.
    So I tried today.
I am using it for a year now, as main router. Several computers and iDevices are using it.
Because I had forgotten some things - and I hadn't wrote it down - I decided  to reset it and configure it again.
Since then, the internet has become slower - and I my Macbook pro can't connect to the Time Capsule's disk.
In Finder's everything fine. Left, under 'Shared', I can see the Time Capsule as a HD.
When I click on it, I see: "No Connection". Then I select "Connect As", and I fill in the Time Capsule password.
It tries to connect a few minutes, but then I get the message:
"The backup disk could not be found. Make sure the backup disk is connected or open Time Machine preferences to select a different backup disk."
In the Airport Utility, there's a green light.
*My firmware has the newest updates
    *I am using Snow Leopard
*I am using newest update of the Airport Utility
*Since reset, internet's fine but a bit slower.
    Other Questions:
*Can I use my Time Capsule for other things than only Time Machine (backup)?
*Can I divide it in parts? (Backup, User)
*Can I backup multiple devices on it? (Macbook Pro, iMac, Macbook Air etc.)
    Hope you can help me!

What actual model is the TC.. the A1xxx number from the rubber base mat???
As they age they become unreliable. Some earlier and some at 3year mark.
It greatly depends on the setup of the existing network.
I would recommend a downgrade in the TC firmware.. as with Snow Leopard there is no advantage to you in the later firmware.
Go to the airport utility and select firmware update.. hold down the option key when you make the selection and all the previous versions available for your model will come up. I recommend using 7.5.2
Do another reset of the device. This time a full factory reset.. and start the configuration again.
Ignore update to firmware requests.. turn off the reminder.
Set all names to SMB standard. short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric. TC name, wireless names, hard disk name.
For wireless I recommend you use wpa2 security with 8-12 character passkey.. pure alphanumeric.
Set to manual for radio channels and test 1, 6, 11 in turn for the best.
Depending on the broadband you use, the TC must be in router or bridge mode.. tell us more if you need help for this.
If you think the TC is slowing you down, do a test with direct connection to the broadband modem and give us the speed comparison.. direct and via the TC ethernet or wireless.. tell us which though.. wireless will always be slower than ethernet.
If you have issues still with the hard disk it might need some work.. older models the disk might need to be erased .. please open any time machine backup and run a verify.

    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
    Other Questions:
*Can I use my Time Capsule for other things than only Time Machine (backup)?
Yes, but the TC is designed primarily for Time Machine.. if you store files, there is no method in the TC to back up those files.. do not make them the only store.
*Can I divide it in parts? (Backup, User)
You cannot partition a TC .. not without removing the disk. You can create a disk image.
    Q3 http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
*Can I backup multiple devices on it? (Macbook Pro, iMac, Macbook Air etc.)
You can use multiple devices with TM. Be aware you need lots of free space for this to be successful. So you need to add up the total you want to backup on each computer.. and at least double it.

  • Extreme (b/g/n) can't connect to the internet

my iMac has no problem seeing my airport extreme (b/g/n), but I can't connect to the internet.
I have tried soft / hard reset & factory reset as well, none of them worked. The extreme just keep flashing its amber light.
On my iMac, I have full signal bars, so recognizing the extreme is not a problem. The only thing I find strange is that the IP address (the one assigned by my ISP) is 0.0.0.1.
I tried connecting through an Ethernet cable and it didn't have any problem, so it's not my ISP. The only thing I can thing of is that the extreme somehow is having trouble recognizing that assigned IP and that's why I can't get connect to the internet.
Anyone suggestion? Is my extreme broken? If so, can it be fixed? Please help.

    Problem solved!
Every time, I feel so stupid once I find out the answer to my problem.
Here it is from another post by 'dwbird':
"Solution: I found that the service name (optional on the setup) may be optional but if your service doesn't require it and you put a service name in the block it prevents the system from working, hence cannot find the PPoE Server and also cannot get an IP address assigned. Guess the moral of the story is that if it is not absolutely required don't fill in any "optional" blocks"
I deleted the name of my ISP and everything works just fine, the stupidest thing is that this is not the first time...
maybe Apple should consider putting a reminder/warning underneath this OPTIONAL service name field.

I did everything the article suggests. And for my macbook pro it works perfectly. But all the other devices (iphone 5, 4, Macbook Air) can't connect to the network. Anybody any idea's?

Try resetting your modem. Power it down. Wait a moment, then power it up again. While it resets, do not change what is connected to it.
In another, though unrelated article, Apple recommends the following:
If you have configured your Wi-Fi base stations in the past, it may be helpful to do a factory default reset of each Wi-Fi base station that will be part of the wireless extended network before you begin.
This step really ought not be considered optional for the configuration you propose. If the problem persists after resetting your modem, reset everything else too.

I recently transferred my internet service to another state.I have not yet moved my imac, just my pc laptop. I cannot get my airport extreme wireless router to work. The green light stays lit when everything is connected but I can't connect to the internet. Any suggestions?

I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
If the above steps do not solve the problem, start over with step 1 above, but then perform the next steps between steps 1 & 2. above.
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Continue with step 2 in the first set of steps.
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • Can't connect to the modem's server.

Hi guys, I have a major problem.
When ever I connect to the internet with my modem, it works. But, when I connect to internet with my router and modem, I can't connect. But I have solved my problem by resetting both, my wireless router and modem. Then after I reconfigure my wireless router all I need to do is to log into my modem's server. But I can't connect to the modem's server. I tired logging in with "admin" (being the password) but I still can't connect to it.
I am using: Verizon Broadband Network
Ultra RangePlus Wireless-N Broadband Router model: WRT160N
                     Westell modem model 6100
What is the problem? Has anyone experienced this problem before?

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You will not be able to log  into the modem as long as the router is plugged in
You must configure the modem first to bridge mode, then plug in the router and log into it
1.)unplug router and have only the modem in
           go to 192.168.1.1 enter
that will take you into the verizon modem/ if you have reset the modem then your user is; admin
                                                                                                                         your password is ; password
once you lopg into that it will ask you to change the username/password
just type in ADMIN in all 3 blanks
now you are logged into the modem;;;;;;go to network at the top, then network connections on the left, broadband connection ,you will then put your protocol on bridge/routed bridge,
now go to wireless settings at the top and make sure wireless is turned on
you have the option to set up a security key on basic security settings
once your modem  resets then plug in your router, you are now in bridge mode and the modems connection has moved to your router.  you must restart modem and computer for everything to take effect....
also make sure and refresh your network list on your laptop
    Hope this works
