Incorrect Registry Permissions?

I have recently bought this new pc about week ago and since then I've been noticing that my regestry permissions are out of wack.  It all started when I realized I only had lock computer option when I used Ctrl+Alt+Delete. After that I've noticed my shutdown button does not show on the windows start menu and the computer says "I do not have permission to pin programs to my start menu". I don't know if HP intended this or I somehow got malweare from microsoft. I really don't want to do a fresh install of Windows 8 because I allready have Visual Studio, Eclipes, Microsoft Office and a  working Oracle Database installed and they're all a pain to re install/create, Also, they are vital for my school work. Is there anyway to safely restart my regestry or set all my permissions to defualt?
This question was solved.

Ivan, welcome to the forum.
Here is a program that will reset the Registry Permissions.  Be certain to read all of the instructions carefully; especially about backing up your Registry.  I downloaded the program and am running it as I type.  I wanted to try it before I gave it to you.  I didn't have problems, however.

  • Windows 7 incorrect registry permissions to load Adobe Flash

I have discovered  Windows 7 has incorrectly assigned invalid registry  permissions to the entries pertaining to Adobe Flash (possibly among other keys).  For example, the system Administrator is able to load Adobe Flash Player 11.8.800.94 but when logging in on the same computer as a regular user it fails.  Briefly inspecting the registry permissions on certain keys, I discovered the system has created permissions for an 'Unknown' account (has an invalid SID) which possibly is creating the error for regular users not to be able to load Adobe Flash.  Obviously, Windows 7 (64bit in my case) has a bug which is causing for problems with loading Adobe Flash.  What is the recommended solution to correct my problem?  (If I continue with Windows).
    Thank you,
    ~Sreyes27

I am trying to avoid a clean install of my operating system (as this has been done several times, due to this bug within Windows 7).  I am trying to get to the root of the problem so it is corrected and this bug is removed.  If you meant to perform a clean install of Adobe Flash, I have done that already.  Interestingly enough, when a regular user does proceed with the Adobe Flash installation, it does succeed.  The user is able to load Adobe Flash but only during his logon session.  As soon as he/she logs off, Adobe Flash fails to load again.  The user is back to square one.  Any idea?
    Thank you,

  • What file/registry permissions are required to run MultiSim 7 as a regular user?

I want to be able to run MultiSim 7 as a regular user (since our students obviously do not have administrative permissions/rights).
I can't quite figure out what file and registry permissions are required to be able to do this (despite using Filemon and Regmon).

    Hi,
If you are refering to the "failed to update registry" warning message, do this:
    1.  Click Start-->Run
    2.  Type "regedt32"
    3.  Locate HKEY_Classes_Root/Multisim.Document
    4.  On the menu, select Security-->Permission (win 2000), For  XP select Edit-->Permission
    5.  Give full control for everyone
    6.  Repeat step 3-->5 for:
    HKEY_Classes_Root/CLSID/{2D964073-9BC9-11D1-840B-006008AC6551}

  • Setting WMI and Registry permissions via GPO?

    Hi,
I am configuring SCOM 2012 R2 for my environment. To configure it for SQL Serve,r I neeed to do the following:
Grant Read permission on HKLM:\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server registry path for SQLDefaultAction and SQLMPLowPriv
Grant “Execute Methods”, “Enable Account”, “Remote Enable”, “Read Security” permissions for root, root\cimv2, root\default, root\Microsoft\SqlServer\ComputerManagement11 WMI namespaces to SQLDefaultAction and SQLMPLowPriv
Grant Read permission on HKLM:\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\[InstanceID]\MSSQLServer\Parameters registry path for SQLMPLowPriv for each monitored instance
So I need to assign registry permissions and wmi permissions.
Is there a way to do this via GPO?
    Thanks

    Hi,
You can not change the permission by using group policy directly.
    Steps to solve your requirement,
    1. Using the SetACL tool you can automate the management of Windows permissions.  It is inherently automatable and scriptable. The
COM version provides the full functionality to any COM-enabled programming language (C#, Visual Basic, C++, Delphi, PowerShell, VBScript, …).
Supported object types: files and folders, registry keys, printers, services, network shares, WMI
So using this tool you can create script to automate Windows permissions.
    2. Then you can use the created script as the Startup script in the GPO with privileges to allow the permission changes.

  • Network location awareness + Registry permissions..

    Hello
I am currently in the pilot phase of a Windows 8.1 deployment for a mid size client
We have come across a strange issue. We have been using SCCM 2012 R2 for the deployment - a fairly vanilla deployment. Randomly, a PC will deploy and function correctly, with IE working and networks connecting as you would expect. However, when you open
Network and Sharing Center, windows says "You are not connected to any networks"
This prevents also Outlook 2013 from starting up and finding the users mailbox.
A fix has been found to this:
Edit the permissions on this registry key and all sub-keys:
    - HKLM \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ Current Version \ Network List
to allow NetworkService and LocalSystem full access, and restarting the Network Location Awareness service.
This fix can be scripted and implemented during the OSD Task Sequence.
Why is this issue happening across the same PC hardware, networks, build process etc etc. Is this a bug with Windows 8.1?
I'd certainly like an explanation here.
    Cheers
    Adrian.

    Hi Adrian,
For the issue, I think the issue is related to your image.
As you know, the system can change the access permission for Network List.
But I cannot understand why it occurred randomly.
I suggest you use a new image to narrow down the issue.

  • Itunes install and Vista x64 ".ipg" registry permissions issue

Much like similar posts, I tried to upgrade to 8.0.2.20 x64.
It gets almost to the end (on iTunes piece, I think) and stops with:
    "HKEYLOCALMACHINE32\Software\Classes\.ipg\OpenWithList\iTunes.exe.
Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact blah...blah...blah"
I initially ran the install "as Administrator". I tried again by logging into the machine as Administrator. Checked permissions on the above Reg key. Uninstalled, cleaned registry. Tried re-install of 8.0.11. Tried the "Switch-less" installs.
NOTHING gets past this registry key. And, of course, I have no iTunes! Quicktime and all the rest appear to be fine.
Somebody smarter than me <everyone!> please offer some relative wisdom or simply a comforting assurance that Apple is listening and cares deeply about our sufferings!
    Thanks, h

    Well, I have an update.
I used RegSeeker (again) but this time removed every reference to Apple and it's products.
I then went to apple.com thru IE 64bit and redownloaded the 64 bit itunes.
This time - it gave the "QT is corrupt or not present" error.
I went back to apple.com thru IE 64bit and down'd the standalone version of QT. It crapped out on a CLSID registry error (I can post the actual, if anyone cares)
HAS ANYONE HEARD ANY OFFICIAL WORD ON WHETHER APPLE IS ADDRESSING THESE ISSUES!
    Thanks, h

  • [SOLVED] Incorrect File Permissions

I did something very stupid involving a recursive chmod in the wrong directory.  I realized my mistake right away and stopped the execution, but I don't know how many files got hit.  I at least know /usr/bin got changed since I get the wonderful "sudo: must be setuid root".
Is it practical to try and fix some of the file permissions in single user mode or should I just wipe and reinstall Arch? It's a relatively clean/recent installation.

    mdschechtman wrote:I did "# chown -R root:root .*", or at least I thought I did.
So you did `chown', not `chmod' as you initially stated. If you did run that command, with ".*" as argument, it should have only changed the hidden files and directories recursively. But you seem unsure about the actual command you ran? Try `history | grep chown' maybe...
mdschechtman wrote:In my panic, I forgot to check which directory I ran the command from.
OK. My script should be able to fix the system files, provided you adjust $min accordingly.
On the other hand, since you don't have an idea which directory is affected, `find' needs to do a lot of work on the whole /, you might as well just reinstall all of your packages... i.e. `pacman -S $(pacman -Qq)'. (Edit: Note though, pacman will not fix permissions or ownership of directories, but will, AFAIK, print a warning when they differ).
    Next time... Remember, don't panic!!!1

  • Migrated users incorrectly, now permissions problems

    Hi all!
I purchased a 2011 MBP this year, to replace my 2008 MBP. I attempted to use Migration Assistant, but didn't transfer correctly and now I'm having permissions related problems. I'm assuming they are related, as that is how it sounds from posts I've read in these forums.
When I used migration assistant, I had already created the same user name on the new MBP. Now that I've read many posts in this forum, I realize I should never have created a user on the new MBP, prior to using migration assistant. Anyway, having trouble with duplicate account names, I believe I reformatted the drive and used the drag and drop method from the old MBP to the new (I can't honestly remember, but I'm pretty sure that's the method I chose). I still created the same user name on both, so perhaps that wasn't a great idea.
For the most part I didn't notice any problems, until after I purchased and installed MS Office 2011. I would open any Office app and everytime it would require me to go through all opening screens as if it was the first time opening Office, even though it had the serial number and all personal information already. I went through MS tech support and fortunately spoke with a very knowledgeable mac user and we traced it down to a permissions problem. He suggested I delete the user name and use the TestName we had created (which had no problems) At the time, I was in the middle of a large video project and I didn't want to do anything that may cause potential problems with it. I finished the project and began another one immediately. In the new project, I had problems with Premiere Pro not recognizing audio in some, not all, clips. I spent days with Adobe tech support and even sent them a sample file. Fast forward to yesterday; it was once again traced to permissions problems. The clip worked under the root user account we (Adobe tech support and I) created.
So, my question is what is the best way to proceed? It seems apparent that I have to delete a user or figure out how to repair all permissions at once, since I have found files and repaired a few with the one-at-a-time method. Obviously this is time consuming and I don't have that kind of time.
Should I delete the username and move things to a new username? If so, what are the best steps to prevent any permissions problems? Or is there a way to repair all file permissions through a command in the terminal?
I can't honestly say I never had any permission problems with the 2008 MBP before, so if by chance there were permisions problems, or any other user related problems, would they have been introduced to this new MBP?
Thank you in advance for the help! :-)

About make a copy of /Users/paisleye into /Users/paislWhy am I doing that? Just for backup? Through the remainder of your post, it sounded as if I would only be accessing /Users/paisleye. Did I mis-read something?
Exactly -- just for backup.  You may notice I'm a little paranoid -- if you have a Time Machine backup, and a SuperDuper/CarbonCopyCloner bootable clone on an external disk, AND a copy in /Users/paisl -- then you've got 3 backups before you start.  :-)  And when you are done you will have the original of /Users/paisleye in /Users/paisl and the original of /Users/test will still be in /Users/test.
What should happen with the ordering is this:
-- if a file is in /Users/test but not in /Users/paisleye, then it will copy over into /Users/paisleye with it's current ownership and permissions, which seem to be right.
-- if a file is in /Users/paisleye but not in /Users/test, then the copy isn't going to fix anything, but it isn't going to hurt anything more, either.  The step where you set ownership of everything in /Users/paisleye to test:staff might just fix all of those problems.
-- if a file is in /Users/paisleye AND /Users/test, then if the ownership/permissions are right on one and wrong on the other it's probably /Users/test that's good.  The copy (the long complicated tar command) will copy the /Users/test version and it's permissions/ownership overtop the /Users/paisleye version.  If that's not right, there is a backup in /Users/paisl, and on the TimeMachine, and on the clone.
What's likely is that you are going to have the occasional weird thing happen with some stray file for months/years.  You can always go back and use chown and/or chmod on an individual file to fix it.  (The -R is the "recursive" flag to do a directory and everything underneath.  Leave it out, and it just does one file at a time.)
I actually ended up with three different accounts on my machine that belong to "me" and had to do this.  (I bought the machine with free Parallels installed, and MacMall created an account called "user" to install it and I had to clean that up when I got it.)  This is not a terrible thing.  One thing that I would recommend if you get it all done and cleaned up and you are happy -- keep the test account, and keep it as an Administrator; then turn off Administrator on the paisleye account.  Then every time you need to do something Administrator, just give the test username/password.  Every so often you will get software that will refuse to install from a non-priv'd account (looking at you adobe!) so just turn on Fast User Switching and log into the test account and install from there.  It just a lot safer if you are not logged in all of the time with privs...
And this unix stuff isn't hard to get the hang of.  If you half remember something, you can google it and find oodles of excellent documentation.

  • Can sluggish computer be caused by incorrect HD permissions?

My Macbook Pro is running slugishly.  Sometimes I request a HELP dialog box and it never appears or it appears blank.  Sometimes applications don't work.  I went to Disk Repair and ran a VERIFY on disk permissions.  There were a thousand of permissions that were not correct.  Mostly they were from EPSON and from AIR PORT UTILITIES.  There was one warning:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
I installed Rosetta Stone recently.  Most of the AIR PORT UTILITIES are language related (French, Spanish, English).
Should I repair my permissions?  I wouldn't want my printer or Rosetta Stone or something worse to stop working because I repaired my Hard Disk permissions.
Thanks for your help.  --Mac Carlton

Repairing permissions may help, but keep in mind that often the reported permission issues are not true issues for the operation of Mac OS X.  If you want to clean things up, run repair permissions from the internal startup drive, then restart in the Mac OS X install disk (holding the C key) choose the language, and do not click continue but go to the install disk's disk utility and choose repair hard drive.  Repairing the internal hard drive will straighten out and file system issues.  After that is finished (if it comes back with any message other than successful repair, run it again), restart on the internal drive and repair permissions one more time.
That should clean up the file systems so they are more efficiently accessed.

  • Listing registry permissions on large qty of systems

Hi would someone please mind advising if this approach would work for the below, just needs to get a job done quickly
    List-Permission
    Function List-Permission
    Remove-PSSession -Session (Get-PSSession)
    $listofservers = Get-Content C:\temp\workstations.txt
    $a = Get-Content c:\temp\list.txt #sample in file would be hklm\etc\etc for each line
    foreach ($server in $listofservers)
        {new-pssession -computername $server
        #$psid = (Get-PSSession $server).Name
    foreach ($item in $a)
invoke-command -computername $server -scriptblock {Get-Acl $a} #export-csv or add-content needs to pipe computer name and permissions for each key out

    This should help you out:
    Invoke-Command -ComputerName $ListOfServers -ScriptBlock {
    Param $a
    Get-Acl $a
    } -ArgumentList $a -ThrottleLimit 20
Instead of doing a lot of ForEach looping through each system, you can just supply the list of computers as an array to the Computername parameter and then use -AsJob to run it in the background. The -ThrottleLimit can be used to limit the number of jobs running
concurrently and can be adjusted as you see fit.

  • Latest flash player installation fails in IE8/Win XP

I have been trying to install the latest version of the Flash Player on my XP system for two days. Here's my system info:
Win = 32-bit Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3
Browser = Internet Explorer Version 8.0.6001.18702
Flash Player - the one I was using (recent but not a beta) was uninstalled when I tried to install your latest version at your site in the usual way. After a couple of attempts to install, I downloaded and ran the player uninstaller according the instructions found on your site - Adobe® Flash® Player Installer/Uninstaller 10.1 r53 - just to make sure I was doing a clean install. I also downloaded the latest version and ran it manually.
All attempts to install have failed. I've seen two different installers, BTW, and they both reported failure but a reason and suggested your troubleshooting page.
I went to the troubleshooting page, where I tried everything, by the book.
Most recent attempts produced the following message when attempting to install from your site:
"The version of adobe flash player active x that you are trying to install is not the most current version. Please visit http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer to obtain the latest, most secure version."
I went to that page, again without success. There are no Flash active x components listed in my browser objects.
I was able to install the latest version of Shockwave player (I tried, just to see if that would fail, but that was successful.)
I should add that I do some web work using Flash 8, so that is also on my system, but I have never run into a problem installing a newer Flash Player until now. (And I have been using Flash since before Macromedia, when it was called FutureSplash.)
    Obviously, HELP!

This one nearly did me in. Countless uninstalls/installs, headstands, etc. later, I finally found a solution that worked for me:

I have watched that long and unnecessary video (giving us the error message would have been much easier), and the problem comes from incorrect registry permissions on your system.  It can easily be fixed by following the instructions on this article http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/494/cpsid_49419.html

  • Allow other users to create subfolders in Public w/ correct permissions?

    Hi,
I have a Public sub-folder called "Shared" which is set with permissions Everyone: Read & Write. Everyone in my workgroup should be able to have full access control to content in this folder.
This works great, except when someone else creates a subfolder, so that there is a structure like:
    Public > Shared > Widgets
If I create the Widgets folder and save a document into it, it has the correctly propagated permissions (Everyone: Read & Write). However, if someone else in my workgroup creates the Widgets folder and saves a document into it, it has incorrectly propagated permissions (Everyone: Read Only).
Is there a way to adjust my settings so that Read & Write applies not only to documents within "Shared", but to any subfolders that "everyone" creates?

    More like:
    *$ chmod +a "everyone allow addfile,add_subdirectory,file_inherit,directoryinherit" /Users/Shared*

  • Repair Permissions in Single User Mode

So, I have searched various posts and have yet to find anything that has worked so far. Hopefully, someone can still help. I recently made the mistake of changing my permissions on my hard drive. I clicked "Get Info" for the Boot volume and changed the permissions for "Everyone." I thought I had corrected it, but now when I try to boot, it just sits at the apple grey screen with the spinner and never loads the OS. Judging from other comments, this appears to be a permissions issue and all I need to do is repair the permissions which is why I ran through these commands in Single User mode:
/sbin/fsck -fy<return> --I did this twice to fix the drive
    /sbin/fsck -fy<return>
    /sbin/mount -uw<return>
    /sbin/autodiskmount -va <return>
    /usr/sbin/diskutil repairPermissions /<return>
    sudo diskutil repairPermissions /
I am having to run through the Single User mode because I do not have the SL install disk. However, I have Windows installed on a Boot Camp partition and I can access files on the mac side but everything is read only.
I am a novice at the command line so any guidance on what commands might help to repair permissions would be great.

Found this for Leopard. Will probably work in 10.6
Run these commands and hit enter after each. Be careful with the spaces; keep exactly as written. There are various suggestions in this thread, which you might first want to check out, but this seems to be the most promising.
    http://forums.macnn.com/90/mac-os-x/370223/changed-hd-permissions-mac-wont-get/
    mount -uw /
    chmod 775 /
    chmod 1775 /
    Then restart
BTW, not recommended to repair Permissions from the install disk, since if you've updated since installing, those will be out of date and incorrect. Permissions Repair should be done from the normal boot volume.
