Incorrect Sizes Shown in List View

I've been running OS 10.3.9 for a while (old G4 can't run 10.4+) and something that's bothered me since the beginning is the way that OS fails to update the size of folders shown in list view and in the "get info" window. I can literally get info on a folder, close the "get info" window, move some files in or out of the folder and get info again and the size reported in the "get info" window will not change (ie, will be WRONG!).
In the past this has been a minor annoyance but now I am dealing with copying large amounts of data onto multiple external hard drives. I need to have accurate size and file counts so that I can see which folders are the same and which may have changed and need updating.
Has anyone found a solution for this bug?
(before someone suggests using backup software to make the copies, that's what I'm already doing but I want to be able to manually confirm that the files were properly copied. I've only used the backup program a few times and I don't entirely trust it yet)
thanks in advance

I have noticed something akin to this on Tiger when showing folder sizes in list view. My workaround has been to change the window view from list to icon to list again which seems to refresh the display.

  • "Search for" results not shown in list view

    Hello,
I just installed Leopard a few days ago, and so far I'm very happy.
The ony oddity I noticed today was that "Search for" results (the default searches in the pane on the left side) are not shown in list view.
    What happens is this:
    - I open a finder window in list view.
    - I click e.g. on "Search for" - "All documents".
    - The status bar on the bottom of the finder window says e.g. "1789 objects", but the actual window is empty (although it has a very long scrollbar). If I click somewhere in the empty space, info for an actual file is shown - as if the files were there, just shown in white letters on white background. I can also type in the search field, and the status bar updates accordingly, but again, no files show up.
Icon and Coverflow views, however, do work.
    - If I switch from Icon to List view, a file list is shown for the fraction of a second, then disappears.
This is not an end-of-the-world-bug for me, but still pretty annoying.
Any idea what might be the problem here? I have no exotic software installed that could cause trouble; just QuickSilver and the usual productivity apps.
    Thanks!

The problem disappeared a few launches later . ..

  • Pictures with GPS-data will not be shown in list-view (PSE 11, Win7)

A lot of pictures of my collection do have GPS-data in EXIF-header. Sometimes they are shown on the world-map, sometimes not. In list-view they are never shown. The list-view knows only locations, which are matched with PSE.
The EXIF-input was made by two different tools (Holux GPS Software and Geosetter 3.4.16).
How can I get the list-view for the saved files without using PSE adding location?

Many modern cameras add GPS co-ordinates and these will usually show in the info panel of the Media module under Camera Data >> GPS
I guess your exif tools work differently to a camera. Are you able to embed the metadata into the image files before importing into PSE Organizer?

  • How to Hide Size Column in List View

My default setting for the Finder is to have folders display in list view with the size column turned off. This works like a charm for every folder except the Applications folder which always displays a size column whenever the finder is re-launched (it's always scrolled to the bottom of the list too, which is weird). It wouldn't bother me if the size values were cached somehow and just updated quietly in the background but it takes quite a while to calculate each value and actually slows down the finder.
I've tried deleting finder preferences but to no avail.
Does anyone know what's going on here?
[The above was originally posted here [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9524102#9524102] but I was asked to move along by a surly faced police officer]

OK. Problem fixed but unfortunately not completely solved.
Talking about permissions and administrator issues made me wonder, so I logged in using my admin account and seemed to be having exactly the same issue. I was unable to set a default permamantly for the Applications folder. Except that when I tried to set a default in another folder (Documents I think) and restarted the Finder the setting held for all directories. When I logged back in under my regular user account it also held.
I have finally eliminated that pesky size column -- for good! (Of course I may want it occasionally, but that's at my discretion). The window also maintains a correct scroll point, corresponding to where it was last positioned.
I wish I knew exactly what has happened. All I really know is that fiddling (as usual) has fixed it and that it probably has something to do with Administrator privileges.
Thanks again for your suggestions and especially for being a sounding board.

  • Show columns for song "Type" and "Size" in v8 list view?

I often sort songs and audio files by either type (mp3 / aif / AAC), or size (how many MB.)
I can't find how to reveal these columns in v8 -- in 7 i would use command-J to reveal the "view options" dialog, then simply check the boxes to display "type" and "size"
The new View Options dialog only has a few options for columns.
    Where did they go?
    Thanks.

Try right clicking at the top of any column and choosing from the list that appears. If you what to display the file format/type (MP3, AAV etc.)choose "Kind".

  • Finder date format in List View

I want to tell Finder NOT to display the day of the week or the spelling of the month in the date columns when it is in List View.
I want this exactly, and nothing else:
    mm/dd/yyyy 12:30
I want the month and day to always use two digits. It just think it looks better when a column of data is all formatted the same exact way. And, I don't need to know that 04/17/01 was a Thursday (or whatever it was)!
I know you can resize the columns to get various amounts of info and formats, but that's too much effort, plus you get all these weird ",..." filler garbage. Let's just make it simple!!!

I think the width of the column is the sole determinant of the date format shown in list views. I use an applescript to set the size, position and column width of Finder windows to my preferred specs; it sets the date column width so that a shorter (but not shortest) date format is used (because I'm picky about that, too ). You can easily tinker with the numbers so the sizing suits your own preferences.
    -- works on frontmost Finder window;
-- settings appropriate for display res 1440x900

    tell application "Finder"

set width of column modification date column of list view options of window 1 to 180
set width of column size column of list view options of window 1 to 100
set width of column kind column of list view options of window 1 to 180

Instructions for saving scripts in case you or other readers need them: Copy and paste the above into a new Script Editor document (or highlight and use the Services -> Script Editor menu). Save as file format: Script at this path -- ~/Library/Scripts/Applications/Finder/ -- creating any folders that don't already exist. You can change the numbers in the script and use the Run button in the Script Editor toolbar to test until you get something you're happy with.

  • How to show list view of pages?

I want to show list of subsits on navigation. when clicking a subsite on navigation  to show corresponding pages in list view. on clicking a page in list view to open page. please share your view how it can be done.

    Hi Magesh,
According to your description, my understanding is that you want to show subsites on the navigation, and when the mouse hovers, the corresponding pages are shown in list view, click these pages, it will be opened. Is it right?
To achieve it, you can use managed navigation. Go to Site Settings->Term store management, you can create a term set, create terms based on the names of the subistes, for each term, click Navigation, and under Navigation Node Type, select the URL of the
subsite for “Simple Link or Header”. Then in each corresonding subsite term, create some sub-terms related to pages, and for each sub-term, click Navigation and under Navigation Node Type, select the URLs of the corresponding page for “Simple Link or Header”.
After the above, go to Site Settings->Navigation, on the Global Navigation section, select “Managed Navagation:…”. On the Managed Navigation :Term Set section, select the term that you created.
More information, please refer to the link:

    I hope this helps.

  • How do I switch my favorites back to list view?

After the 4.4.2 update the favorites switched to grid view. All other contacts are shown in list view but the selection to switch the favorites to list view is gone.

Great news is, that option is still on the phone! When on your Favorites tab, tap on the Settings (top right corner) and in the fly out menu select List View.

  • List view, sizes seem to load very slowly

I do not have "calculate all sizes" on. When I view the applications folder in list view, I do have column set to show size, however. I am amazed at how slowly that size colunm takes to fill in from the dashes. Is this how it is suppose to behave.

As others have said, calculating the contents of folders takes a long time. Unlike in the past, most applications in OS X are actually application "packages", which are actually folders (eg. ctrl-clicking on one should have a "Show Package Contents" item in the contextual menu).
In the past, sizes were not automatically shown for application packages unless the "calculate sizes" option was selected in the "Finder" - they were treated as folders (which they are). I remember this distinctly because it annoyed me - packages being treated as a single item when double-clicking while not carrying through the concept to calculating sizes. But on the flip side, this behaviour was helpful in distinguishing between .nib files and .nib folders from the GUI.
In Leopard, the "Finder" now does treat packages as a single item when it comes to displaying sizes. So the "delay" you describe may not be that the "Finder" is slower but rather that it is doing more since it now has to calculate all of the application package sizes, which it was always slow at.

  • How can I set a default finder list view column size?

    Hi,
I am having a bit of an issue here.
I like to use the list view in finder.
I want to set the name column to a certain size globally, so that all folders display the name at the same width.
However, currently I resize the column in the folder I'm working in, change folder and return to the original folder and the size has returned to the defaults.
Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Hold down the Option key and drag the vertical column right or left as needed.
Close that Finder window then open a new one. See if that worked.
It's working for me in Mountain Lion v10.8.4

  • Wrong Dates and Sizes in List View in Finder (10.3.9)

    Hi,
I'm in the Finder (Mac OS X 10.3.9) looking at a folder.
The folder is in List View mode.
    Here's the problem:
Files that I edited yesterday are continuing to show up as modified "Today."
    What's with that?
The Finder window won't update. (And I modified those files 12 hours ago.)
This has been going on for years.
Sometimes clicking on each file will trigger an update of the info, sometimes not.
Sometimes the dates are wrong, sometimes the sizes are wrong.
Is there a cure for this Mac OS bug?

  • 10.4.3 File Size Shown Incorrectly in Finder Window

Tiger 10.4.3 --- Sometimes file sizes don't display correctly in Finder windows. For example, I was just downloading a bunch of large files from an FTP site. They were all 44.1Mb in size. After they finished DL'ing, some of the file sizes showed a much smaller file size. But cmd-I on those files and the correct size is displayed.
Some of these files show up with the correct size, but only after waiting a loooong time...
Can anyone tell me why don't file sizes show up correctly? Or immediately? Any help will be appreciated!

Is this causing any problems, or is it just a quirky behavior? For example, if you change to list view and sort by date, does it still get the dates wrong?
I'm thinking this is probably a really marginal bug, where Composer isn't telling the Finder to refresh the date as most applications do, but then, Mozilla does a lot of unMaclike things. Eventually the Finder figures out that the files have been updated though. There are probably a host of ways you can force it to update, as you've already discovered. You can also force it to update with a simple AppleScript:
    tell application "Finder"
update every item of window 1
    end tell
This tells the Finder to update everything in the frontmost window to match what's on the disk.

  • Inconsistent and incorrect file icons in finder window list view

I have been seeing incorrect file icons in finder windows noteably for PDF files the last couple of weeks on my office MacMini running 10.5.8. Some just look messed up. Some switched and looked like Evernote files, but they open correctly in the default application - Preview.
Get info would show the same incorrect icon, but correctly show Preview as the default application.
Just now I tried clicking on CoverFlow view and when I went back to List view, the icons looked correct again.
What type of system maintenance if any is needed to correct this issue? Note, these files continue to display correctly on my home iMac where these files are synced.

    Thanks for the reply Baltwo.
I followed your directions. After the restart the PDF icons were all displayed correctly.
However, some .doc file icons were blank. Selected one, got info, set it to open with MSWord and then clicked "apply to all." Most, but not all now display the Word logo. Some remain blank, although get info reveals they are set to open with Word. Will another restart fix this or is there another suggestion?
I will be away from this computer till Monday.
