"Incorrect structure found in PDF file"?

I put together multi-page seminar presentations by using the Acrobat "Create PDF from Multiple Files" command to join together individual PDFs acquired elsewhere or generated by Mathematica or Illustrator, and then reorganizing these pages in Acrobat.
Fairly often, when I try to Delete an unwanted one these pages using Acrobat's Document >> Delete Pages menu command I get the error message "An incorrect structure was found in the PDF file", and the page simply refuses to delete (workaround is then to move it to the end of the file.
Is there any way to cure or avoid these problems? Or a diagnostic I could run on the errant document? For example, to clean up the "incorrect structure" could I:
--Burst (Extract) the file back to individual pages, run each individual page through a Save or Save As process in Acrobat or Illustrator?
--Do the preceding on every page before assembling the first time?
--Buy a whole new suite of Adobe programs?
Doing a Save or Save As on the complete file doesn't seem to help.
[This happen on a MacBook running Tiger (OS 10.4), Acrobat 7.0 Standard, Illustrator CS 7.0. Send me an email; I'll forward a cc of one of these files.]

In response to questions from Leonard Rosenthol:
Is it really 7.0 or are you current with 7.0.9? ==> It's 7.0.9
It is 10.4 or are you current with 10.4.9? ==> 10.4.10 actually
Happens only "every now and then" -- maybe 1 time in 10 -- don't identify any common factors or causes when it happens.
Must confess: I have maybe couple thousand PDF slides total, captured off the net, obtained by printing to PDF on Mac, generated in Mathematica, created from misc photos, pulled out of Word docs and tech reports, etc, etc. All organized pretty well in folders, cataloged with iView, but no records kept of where they came from.
Not a killer problem -- just makes me worry a little -- and wonder, if I understood the cause, could I fix the source slide that's maybe causing it -- or at least identify the problem slide.

  • I accidentally found a .PDF file using Spotlight while I was searching for something else. However, I can't find the location of the file.

    While I was using Spotlight to search for an app. I came across a .PDF file related to my job. However, it's not in the finder nor in the documents folder. As matter of fact, it's not even listed in the PDF files section. I can open it using Spotlight.....but I can't find it. It it on my Inbox? Do I have files lurking around in my computer without me knowing about them? Also I don't remember downloading said file. It's not harmful it's just a simple 32-page .PDF file that contains information on my company policies. But where is it and how did get there?

    If you hold down the option key, it will typically show the location. Or you can often hit option-return on the file and it will reveal the file in the Finder, instead of opening it.
    Final option is to open it, and just option-click the filename in the toolbar of Preview and it should show you the location.
    It's probably an attachment to an email you've received. If you have Mail set to cache emails and their attachments it'll be stashed in a subdirectory of ~/Library/Mail. Which is fine.

  • Optimize scanned PDF for ONLY PDF FILES in a folder?

    Using the Action Wizard to batch optimize scanned documents.  When selecting a folder, how can we only optimize the PDF files and skip over conversion of all other file types (JPG, TIF, DOC)?  Currently it is converting all files in the folder to PDF, but we only want to optimize the ones which are already PDF.
    Thanks!
    ATC

    Figured that would be the only choice... I will use Robocopy to copy the entire folder structure and only *.pdf files, then optimize, then copy back and overwrite existing files.  Hopefully Adobe will have a way to filter filetypes in their next release.

  • Reader XI pops up when dragging PDF file to email

    System: Windows 7.  Three windows are involved in this scenario:
    1. Some document or other in Adobe reader XI, in the background
    2. Windows Explorer on one side of the screen
    3. New Outlook email being composed on the other side of the screen.
    Sequence: I've found the PDF file that I want to send to someone, so I drag it from the Windows Explorer window to the Outlook window to attach it to the email I'm writing.  If my mouse pointer goes over any open Reader XI window, that window immediately pushes to the front, obscuring the email window which I was aiming for.
    Of course there are many workarounds for this, but the behaviour is both annoying and unnecessary.  If I want to drop the PDF file in an obscured reader window, I can hover over the icon in the taskbar to bring the window to the front.  This "me, me, me!" behaviour of Reader XI is crass.

  • Link to another pdf file

    Hi all.
    I am using the Acer Iconia W500 tablet with Android 3.0.
    I have a big problem with links in a pdf file, which should open another pdf file.
    Is this with Adobe Reader impossible or is there a solution?
    I have the following folder structure:
         -folder A
              -pdf file 1
              -subfolder B
                   -pdf file 2
              -subfolder C
                   -pdf file 3
    In pdf file 1 there are two links, which open pdf file 2 or pdf file 3. In pdf file 2 and pdf file 3 is a link, which opens pdf file 1 again.
    With my notebook and Adobe Reader X there are no problems opening pdf files from another pdf file.
    Thanks for reading my problem and hopefully for solving it.
    Fabian

    Hi Fabian,
    The pdf file you are talking about is a Portfolio (earlier called a Package File)? Portfolio files are basically pdf files in which we can have sub-folders or any other files (pdf, or, non-pdf)?
    If yes, then we do have good support for Portfolios in Adobe Reader X.
    Would it possible for you to share the pdf file you are concerned about?
    Thanks,

  • Corrupt PDF File (Error 109) detection

    Hi there,
    I might probbably be wrong here ...
    We as a company use List&Labels to create our invoices in PDF Format. We create about 70000 invoices each month.
    Now and then we have single PDF documents that are corrupt and I'd like to program or use (in Visual Studio 2010) some PDF_Validation before sending the PDFs to our print provider as this dialog pops up in production environment and somebody has to react on it - which is not good :-) as none of the 70000 documents got printed until somebody clicks the OK button.
    We get the following Error Dialogs (see below):
    I'd like to catch the error programaticaly or analze the PDF by code to see wether it is corrupt or not.
    The PDF itself has misplaced text and invalid character spacings so it is useless to be sent to customers.
    Any ideas or recommendations?
    TIA a lot
    Ole Grossklaus

    Sven-Ole,
    I don't think you can attach files to forum posts - regardless of how you
    try to submit the attachment. You can either host the file on your own
    server, or upload it to some other file sharing service and post the link
    here.  Something that is easy to use is Dropbox. Just upload the file and
    then select to share it.
    As has been mentioned before, you cannot use Acrobat on a server, but if
    the problem is always the same, there may be an easy way to detect that
    specific problem. You would have to use a PDF library/toolkit/framework to
    get access to the structure of the PDF file. One option for this would be
    the Adobe PDF library (and because this is an Adobe forum, I'll refrain
    from mentioning any non-Adobe software).
    The key would be to - with the help of the PDF specification - identify the
    nature of the problem, and then verify that all your
    non-printing/non-processing files have the same problem. Once the source
    for the problem is identified, you can then use the PDF library (that is,
    if the file loads at all) to look for the problem in the files before you
    hand them off.

  • InsertPage RaiseError: An incorrect structure was found in the PDF file

    Hi,
    I am trying to build a button script that will create a new document, copy (insert) from the first page of the open document, save it, then close it.  I believe the part where it gets tricky -- and possibly not doable -- is that the original (source) document uses a template; full of form fields to possibly be spawned off as new pages.
    Given the above, ideally the user of the form can click on the "save new page" button: it creates anj Inserted copy of the first form page, cleared of content if any has been entered, and not including any other pages that may have been spawned.
    With the code I am using, it currently creates the copy of the page and it inserts it as the zeroeth page (ahead of a blank page I intend to add code later to delete) and saves it.  However, there are a couple of problems that come up with this.  First is the error code that opens in the debugger:
    RaiseError: An incorrect structure was found in the PDF file
    Doc.insertPages:29:AcroForm:Save New Form:Annot1:MouseUp:Action1
    ===> An incorrect structure was found in the PDF file
    Despite the error it does still save the page (form copy) as mentioned above.  However, if you try to start working with it, it lets you know that there are no form fields on the document (even though they are all there and seemingly functional).   When I look to edit the fields, it will then ask you if you want to try to recognize the fields.  If I click on "yes", it says it was unable to, but then the form opens up with all of the field names perfectly matching the original.  If I click on "no" it just opens the page with all of the fields perfectly matching again.  So I feel like I am close to being able to do this!
    I am using the following code to produce my results:
    (In the JavaScript "app" folder, I have the following trusted functions:)
    myTrustedMenu = app.trustedFunction(function(name)
        app.beginPriv();
        app.execMenuItem(name);
        app.endPriv();
    myTrustedSaveAs = app.trustedFunction(function(doc, namePath)
        app.beginPriv();
        doc.saveAs(namePath);
        app.endPriv();
    myTrustedNewDoc = app.trustedFunction(function()
        app.beginPriv();
        var doc = app.newDoc();
        app.endPriv();
        return doc;
    myTrustedInsertPage = app.trustedFunction(function(doc, namePath)
        app.beginPriv();
        doc.insertPages ({
            nPage: -1,
            cPath: namePath,
            nStart: 0
        app.endPriv();
    (On the "Save New Form" button, the following code is activated:)
    // First split document path into an array
    var aPathComps = this.path.split("/");
    // Get File Name off end of array
    var myFileName = aPathComps.pop();
    var pathway = aPathComps.join("/");
    var myDoc = myTrustedNewDoc();
    myTrustedSaveAs(myDoc, pathway + "/test.pdf");
    myTrustedInsertPage(myDoc, this.path);
    //myDoc.resetForm();
    //myDoc.closeDoc(true);
    I apologize for the long post and I appreciate anyone who takes the time to look into this issue for me.
    Thanks,

    You nailed it TSN!  Deleting the tags did the trick.  Thank you so much for your help!  Just an FYI for any of you fellow "noobs" that might be referencing this discussion, to open the "Tabs" view (in Adobe Acrobat Pro XI in my case) go to View > Show/Hide > Navigation Panels > Tags.  I looked all over the place for that until I found a document that mentioned how to open it.
    Thanks for pointing out specifically how to get here. Thanks to the all for this post!
    I also encountered this error, "An incorrect structure was found in the PDF file" from my published MadCap Flare user guide. I am attempting to find a way to build a bridge between Flare and Google documents for corporate-wide collaboration. Thus far, it's a crazy challenge finding a way to produce gdocs from Flare output. Neither product makes this easy. The closest I can get is by publishing the Flare doc as a PDF... but then I must break that document down into 2mb chucks...which led me to this problem, after attempting to use the Adobe Acrobat splitting tool.
    Question:
    What is the root cause of these bad tags. There are a LOT of them! Is this a fault in the way MadCap Flare creates a PDF document?
    Yes, deleting some of the tags will allow me to finally split a PDF document. Unfortunately, this error occurs in all my published PDF documents, thus preventing me from automating (scripting) this split and then conversion to Google Docs!
    Thank you

  • Solution to "An incorrect structure was found in the PDF file"

    I was trying to extract a page from a PDF file in Acrobat Pro 8.1.2 using Javascript, and got this error ("Incorrect Structure was found").
    For future reference, here's what I did to restore the ability to extract/delete pages:
    Go to the View -> Navigation Panels -> Tags. The panel showed that my PDF file had two Document tag "trees". Select the option to "Highlight content". Then, when you select a tag, the corresponding page items get a light blue border. It turned out that one of the two tag sets didn't highlight anything, so I deleted it (leaving one Document tag tree). Then I saved the file, and was able to extract pages after that.
    So that's how I fixed it in this particular file. Hope this helps.
    Darryl

    Funny, I see this error in many spots but nobody from Adobe is addressing it where I can see. The tag idea was interesting (and tedious) but still not working. Looks like I won't make the deadline. Thanks for a whole lot of nothing Adobe...

  • An Incorrect Structure is Found in the pdf File

    After creating a form from a Word document, I am not able to use the extract feature.  When I try to extract pages, I get the error message "an incorrect structure is found in the pdf file".  Is there a way to fix this?  I have tried creating the form multiple times and this problem persists.  Thank you!

    Hi,
    We are not able to reproduce the issue at our end. Which version of Acrobat are you using? Is this a generic problem?
    If possible, can you please share a file with us so that we can analyze the issue further?
    Thanks!

    copy and pasting a page in an existing document? Copy and paste functions are greyed out? Also tried extracting the page to copy but am alerted that an incorrect structure was found in the PDF file?

    What do you mean by "copy and paste a page"? What tool have you selected? Or are you just assuming you can select stuff and copy/paste as in Word?

  • Incorrect structure was found in the PDF message

    I have a folder level javascript that creates a custom menu item which when clicked inserts a page at the end of the open document.
    Sometimes when executed, a dialog box appears that says "An incorrect structure was found in the PDF file" but the page is inserted anyway.
    We work with a lot of documents that have been scanned as a PDF. However, as I said it only occurs with some documents....
    Is it just the way they have been scanned? Or is there an error in my script? Or perhaps another explanation?
    Could I suppress that particular alert since the page is inserted anyway?
    ---edit----
    I have just checked the script with Acrobat 7.0 and although I don't get the 'Incorrect structure was found in the PDF' message the javascript debugger appears with this message in the console:'Exception in line 19 of function anonymous, script folder-level:App:InsertSummaryPage.js' but once again the page is still inserted anyway.
    Here is the javascript I am using to insert a page:
    trustedNewDoc = app.trustedFunction(function ()
    app.beginPriv(); // Explicitly raise privilege
    this.insertPages({nPage:this.numPages-1, cPath:"/C/Program Files/Adobe/Acrobat 7.0/Acrobat/Javascripts/SummaryPage.pdf"});
    app.endPriv();
    app.addMenuItem({cName:"Insert Summary Page", cParent:"Tools", cExec:"trustedNewDoc()"});
    Thanks

    Larry – I did what you said and got the form to comply. I combined all the pages and suffered as the software bombed about every third or fourth move I made. For some reason, the form fields work like they should, but the text never goes into the order you want it to. I was having to move the text to the bottom and it would bomb every time I did. I would launch the software again and it would work for about 5 or 6 moves, but every time I moved the text to its proper place in the order, it bombs the program.
    But your suggestion was the correct one.
    I did get the message that some of the names were the same and I’ve had that happen before. I’ve gotten better at my naming convention. I’m hooked up to a network here and some times when they are doing whatever they do behind the scenes, I’ve had the software not cooperate or not perform optimally.
    Our forms here were all built long ago, and the nature of them is to cram as much info onto a page as you can. It’s not uncommon to have 150 – 200 items per page. This makes compliance a real effort.
    Thanks again for all your help.
    Rob

  • Can't delete a page - Error - "Incorrect structure in pdf"

    I am unable to delete a page in my pdf (form). I get an error that says - "Incorrect structure in pdf found"....that's it. Can anyone give any insight into this and how I can fix it? I have to delete this page.
    Thanks a lot.

    I too can't Extract due to- "Incorrect structure in pdf"
    Why can't Adobe figure this out then add a button or run command to fix this. I have a 53 page file with fields (and quite a number of fields). I cannot find where the problem is. All of these posts and message never get answered in a straight forward manner. I shouldn't have to go through countless of web pages of possible solutions to include Adobe's forum...... STILL NO ANSWER.
    I had to go to an older saved file and redo all the changes. C'mon, if the program tells me that there is an "Incorrect Structure" it should be able to tell me where!!!
    I am, as are countless of others, waiting on the solution!
    CS 5 will be my last upgrade if Adobe is unresponsive to it's faithful users!

  • Adobe 8 - Unexpected Corrupt or incorrect file type warning when viewing a PDF file from the Web

    Hi,
    On downloading a PDF file from my web site using Adobe 8 on the client machine I expect the file to open automatically however I receive encounter the "File Download" dialog. It has the following warning message: "The file you are downloading cannot be opened by the default program. It is either corrupted or it has an incorrect file type. As a security precaution, it is recommended that you cancel the download."
    This issue did not occur within previously tested versions of Adobe Reader (e.g. Version 5.1).
    On investigating the issue I discovered the factor that results in Adobe 8 failing to open the file automatically is the Content-Type = "application/pdf; Charset=utf-8". However, if I intercept the response and alter the Content-Type to contain only "application/pdf;" the issue on Adobe 8 does not occur.
    I have even tested when the Content-Type contains an empty Charset (i.e. "application/pdf; Charset=") but this issue still occurs. In addition setting the Charset to other encodings (e.g. "ISO-LATIN-7", "iso-8859-1") the issue occurs.
    QUESTION(s):
    1. Why is it necessary for Adobe 8 when opening PDF files from the web to expect no Charset within the Content-Type?
    2. If this was not an issue within previous versions of Adobe surly this is a bug?
    Since I cannot ensure that the Response's Content-Type does not contain a Charset at all please can someone suggest either a work-around or more importantly a solution to the issue?
    Please Note:-
    1. Within Adobe, Edit -> Preferences -> Internet option it's compulsory for our users to have "Display PDF in browser" ticked!
    2. We cannot prevent a Charset from being present within the Content-Type of the response sent to the client, hence this issue.
    Many Thanks in advance,
    Martin.

    Bill,
    This is exactly the same behavior I observed when I rendered a PDF stored in a database through a .NET page. If I chose to save it, it would open fine after the save, but if I chose to open it in the browser without saving it, I would get the error.
    The problem was not with the PDF or Acrobat. It was with the way I was delivering the PDF. Putting the following code before my binarywrite fixed the issue completely:
    Response.ClearHeaders()
    Response.ClearContent()
    Response.ContentType = "application/octet-stream"
    Response.AddHeader("content-disposition", "attachment; filename=" + saveFilename)
    where saveFileName is the name you want to give the PDF.
    You can use 'inline' instead of 'attachment' above if you just want the PDF to open (no option to save first). You can also use 'pdf' instead of 'octet-stream' (not sure the difference).
    The trouble seems to be that .NET puts some info in the header and/or content by default prior to anything your code says to write. If you don't clear this, IE has an issue with it. Other browsers seem to ignore it.
    Bottomline is that this is an issue the website programmer needs to fix and is not something the user can fix by changing some setting(s).
    I hope this helps.

  • RH11 404 - Page Not Found when linking to PDF file from search results using IE9 and IE10

    I'm using RH11 (11.0.3.268) and I've included a number of PDF files as baggage files. The hyperlinks on the pages work fine and display the PDF files in a separate window, as expected. However, when searching for these same PDF files using the Search tab, I'm getting a 404 error with the filename. The description on the error shows the filename and says the "the requested resource is not available." This is occurring using IE9 and IE10. And, it only happens within the application, which packages the WebHelp with a war file.
    I searched the forum and found where someone was having the same problem on Firefox, but was fine on IE. But, as mentioned, I'm finding it on IE.
    Thoughts on how to fix this error?

    Is the WAR file extracted at the point when the search is done? If not, I would expect it to fail.
