Incorrect unread inbox count in iphone OS 3.0 - "Phantom" unread email?

For one of my IMAP email accounts, the iPhone always displays an unread inbox count exactly 1 more than the actual number of unread emails. That means that when all emails are "read" the iphone still displays a red badge of 1 rather than no badge. In the mail app on the phone the inbox indicates a 1 while no messages are displayed as unread.
The one peculiar thing is that at the end of the list of inbox email messages which just displays the partial contents of the email is a "phantom" blank email with a date of 12/31/00 which cannot be selected for deletion or move by using the edit button. It's like a permanent placeholder for something.
Checking the email account with a web client or Mac Mail (from 10.5.7) shows no such artifact email exists. My guess is that this phantom email is giving me the wrong unread count, but I can't get rid of it within the iphone OS where it exclusively seems to reside.
Anyone else see this?

Hi Joe,
The very same applies to me. Except that the date of this "ghost" email is 01.01.01. This is happening on my mobile me account. Removing and re-installing the account do not solve the problem. As you mentioned the "ghost" message does not appears neither in web interface nor in Mac email client.
Here's a screenshot of the problem:

  • Outlook 2013 - Inbox not showing count of unread emails

Ever since moving to Outlook 2013, some of our users are experiencing issues where their inbox does not show the count of unread emails. These user's are working in cached exchange mode. Taking them out of cached exchange mode, deleting OST file and then
putting back in cached exchange mode usually resolves the issue. However, this is only temporary and the problem comes back. We are running Exchange 2010.
Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue for good?
    Thanks.

    Hi
As per the information and details provided by you, to solve the problem of Outlook 2013, please follow these steps: -
I was also having the same problem. At the top of the
Inbox, I clicked “Unread” (which is new to
Outlook 2013, and different than the Unread, Mail search folder). It showed a message, something like,
“there are more items on the server”, and gave me a link to view the items. When I clicked the link, no items appeared, but my unread mail indicator on my
    Inbox went away.
I hope this information will be helpful for you.

  • Unread email folder doesn't exist on iPhone mail application?

    Hi everyone,
I just recently switched over to an iPhone 4 after 6 years with a Blackberry. I have many apple products and was finally able to switch at work. Everything is great except that the way you have to find unread email is very cumbersome. On the BB, all unread mail appeared in the default mail view. On the iPhone, I have to go into the folder view to find emails that I have ruled into other folders on my Microsoft Exchange account which is very cumbersome.
Also, I hear a new email alert but the mail icon doesn't update the unread mail count unless that email comes to my inbox folder. Since I work in IT at my organization and receive many emails, I have them ruled on exchange to many different folders. I have all of those folders pushed to the iPhone but I have to manually look in each folder for the unread mail count next to the folder.
So I guess I'm saying that this is not efficient enough mail for me. Can you do setup an unread mail folder that shows all unread mail regardless of what folder it really is in on the iPhone mail program somehow? If not, can this be submitted as an enhancement as it makes email use very cumbersome. I have found tons of posts about this through google searches. I thought I would make a post to see if we are all missing something simple. If there is a simple setup that I can configure to fix this, please let me know!
    Thanks,
    Unhappy mail user

  • How do yo clear the email inbox counter?

My email inbox counter shows one unread message even though there are no messages in the inbox. Everything has been deleted from the server(Yahoo) but iPhone 3G ver 3.0 still indicates one unread message. Anyone else having this problem? Any idea on how to clear it?

I have tried both shutting down and a hard reset. I have also tried deleting the email account followed by a hard reset and adding the account again. Anyone have any other thoughts?

  • I have an iphone 3gs.  I have 7 separate email accounts on the phone.  Everytime I update, it reloads all of the emails as new unread emails.  Is there any way to either delete all or alternatively stop it from reloading all prior emails?

I have an iphone 3gs.  I have 7 separate email accounts on the phone.  Everytime I update the phone, it reloads all emails received as new unread emails.  I can click each one, move them to trash and then delete all.  However, I am wondering whether there is any way to either (a) delete all from the inbox or (b) stop them from reloading?
    Thanks

    Hello Kizzyk,
I would start with taking a look at the settings to make sure that you are able to send and receive messages. If everything looks good then the next step would be to remove the accounts and add them back in. Take a look at the article below for more information and details on how to troubleshoot your issue further.

  • I have an iPhone 4 using iOS 7.1.2. On my home screen at the email icon it shows I have over 11,000 unread emails. I have no emails and am not receiving any. Ipad shows I am receiving emails ok. Om my phone deleted folder is empty as well as Sent.

I have an iPhone 4 using iOS 7.1.2. On my home screen at the email icon in red it shows I have 11,193 emails to be read.  I have no mail in Inbox, Drafts, Sent, or Trash. Where did this come from and how do I get rid of it. The number is printed in read on top of the blue and white emaiI icon. I contacted my cable company and through their website I can check my email. In doing this it showed I had 25 unread emails. Also, my iPad 2 is receiving emails fine.  So the problem is with the iPhone 4. What can I do to get rid of the number and make my mail operational?

  • IPad unread email count doesn't tally with Microsoft Exchange 2007 email count from OWA.

I discovered that when we first setup the iPad to sync email from Microsoft Exchange 2007 server via ActiveSync, the total number of unread email count tally with the count from OWA. After a few days, the unread email count will be out of sync. The settings for iPad "Mail days to syn": No limit. Mail to show: 1000. iPad iOS: 5.1.1
    We performed the following:
    1.     Compare email by email to verify which are the read email from OWA doesn't sync to iPad. We discovered that some emails read from OWA doesn't sync with iPad even performed forced update. However, if we delete that read email from OWA, it will delete (unread) from iPad immediately after sync.
    2.     Email recall message for successful recalled displayed in OWA but not on iPad.
    3.     Calendar invite message forward as email displayed in OWA but not in iPad.
Is there a bug for Microsoft Exchange 2007 or there is limitation for iPad?
    Any kind expert can advice?
    Thanks.

  • Mail Icon Unread email Count

I just got the iphone 4s.  (i had the 3gs and had to go to droid due to family plan on sprint.)  Anyhow i am back on iphone and i was hoping someone can remind me how to remove the unread email number count on the Mail icon.  I believe there was a setting etc which allowed me to remove this.  You input is appreciated.

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • Wrong counts on unread emails on my gmail folders in Mac Mail

    Hi
I have a tag showing unread emails in my Gmail folders in Mac Mail when I have no mail inside those folders.
Sent Messages 133 and All Messages 244
I have deleted mnessages everywhere and still this count tag appears with same number.

There are two standard protocols for receiving email, POP and IMAP. In the POP (Post Office Protocol) when messages are "read" by your email client (Mail) they are downloaded and stored on the reading computer and deleted from the POP server. When you are using IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) the messages remain on the IMAP server until they are deleted. IMAP was created for exactly the situation you are trying to achieve. For example Apple's iCloud (formerly me.com, formerly mac.com) uses IMAP protocol. So whether I access my email on my Mac, my iPhone, my iPad, or via webmail I have access to all the files in all the various mailboxes automatically because they are all seeing and using the same online mailboxes. If I delete a message on any of the varioius devices it is deleted on all of the various devices.
Whether you can use IMAP protocol or not depends on your email host and whether they have an IMAP server or not. Many ISPs do not offer IMAP because they do not want to bear the expense of the additional disk space required to store the IMAP messages. As I mentioned before Apple's free email service is by default IMAP. Google Mail offers a somewhat non-standard IMAP service. It works with Apple's email client, Mail, but it is just a bit "different".
Personally I resisted using IMAP for years. Largely because I had always used POP and was comfortable with it. Once I got an iPhone and needed to synch my email between my computer and iPhone I realized IMAP was "the only way to go."

  • Outlook 2013 folders not showing unread email count for incoming emails

When a new email comes in, it would show up in its folder in bold, indicating it's unread email, which is good, but there is no blue number (unread email count) next to the folder. Outlook repair didn't help. No one else on the network has this problem.
How to fix it so when a new email comes in the unread email count would update itself?

    Hi,
Does this issue happen to all folders (including Inbox)?
Please right click on one folder, and select Properties, and make sure the "Show number of unread items" option is selected. If it is already selected, change it to "Show total number of items", click OK. Then, change it the "Show
number of unread items" again to see the result.
Please let me know the result.

  • Sudden appearance of over 7000 unread emails on iphone

As I was clearing out my emails yesterday, I suddenly noticed over 7000 emails (marked as unread) in the inbox.  However, when I open the inbox, it says "no unread emails."  I also have no emails anywhere else (having deleted trash and junk mail).  I can find no way of eliminating that pesky number when I close the email.  Anyone have any suggestions?  I've read anything I can find, and nothing seems to be working.

    Hi,
I am using Exchange 2010 server and iPhone 5, the same behavior as yours.
And I refresh the emails in iPhone 5 manually, the unreaded email becomes read.
I think it need some times to sync the changes.
If the status not changed after refreshing manually, I suggest use Windows Phone for test if it is convenient.
If it works in Windows Phone, I suggest asking iPhone support for help so that we can get more professional suggestions.
If it doesn't work in Windows Phone, since Office 365 is different from Exchange 2013 server, I suggest asking Office 365 Forum for help. For your convenience:

  • Exchange Online : Unread Email Count

I'm looking to get an export of the number of unread emails in the inboxes of several users. We will use this to bring to the attention of those users that they need to keep up with their email better than they already are, based on the number returned.
I have yet to find a viable solution for this.

The only way I can think of is to run some sort of an EWS based script against those mailboxes. Check here for example:
