Incorrect word breaks, language with no dictionary
I am working on a two language document, English and Cree. The problem is with Cree, which is based on syllabics, and is not recognized by ID. It breaks the words at the edge of each column, not necessarily at the end of each word.
Is there a way to get ID to break lines only at spaces and do no hyphenation (it currently does not do any hyphenation for the Cree texts)? I assume that users in non-supported languages have the same problem, and the current solution is to go through manually and insert line breaks at the appropriate point, which is particularly hard when you can't read the text (a translator is hired off-site).
I hope someone has a better solution.
Ehm ... because InDesign can't load the correct rules for that language? No language = no rules.

It is something different than unchecking "Hyphenation" -- that works on entire paragraphs only. This will work for any word (or phrase, sentence, paragraph, multiple book set) you don't want to be hyphenated.
[Post-thought:] "No language" may lead to surprising results with some OpenType fonts, as a lot (if not all) of features may be tagged to the language. You might suddenly miss ligatures, for example. So, other than for "Other" languages, you should probably just switch hyphenation off.

Performed a Full Crawl and wait for the Full Crawl to complete and try searching again.

Strange behaviour on searching Chinese word (maybe related with word breaker?)
Dear all,
On my SP2013 environment, I have installed Chinese (traditional) language pack and I am able to search out Chinese document after crawling. However most of the time I cannot search out document with "single" word or "sentence".
I have to search using "term".
For example, our test document contains a sentence "中國語文". I can search out this document with "中國" or "語文" or "中國(space)語文". But I cannot search it out with any other combination like "中", "文",
or "中國語文".
I think it is related with Traditional Chinese specific word breaker but it would be a huge effort for me write a custom one. (ref:

Sorry to reopen this thread again. I was puzzled by the data format in Motion-DDK.
From the Motion-DDK, if u32, i32 and f64 data are passed to and from the controller, a specific format must be followed as below:

My first question: is the "?" symbol means the >> (shift operator) or something else?
The second question is: if "?" means ">>" in this list, all the u32 and i32 data are always transferred in big-endian order. Is it the only correct way to deliver the i32 and u32 data? Or I can pass the u32 and i32 either in little-order or big-order depending on my platform?
The last one: could you provide a feasible C code on how to convert the f64 data to u16?
I first followed the format in the list to convert the f64 data, but met with a lot of compiler errors in VC++. After checked with MSDN, it is said the convert process is double(f64)->long(i32)->unsigned short(u16). But the decimal part of double will be truncated during converting to long...
So, could you help me with some very simple sample code on the convert process?

## Detail of bug
When login from Mac OS X with Microsoft Remote Desktop, the keyboard layout is always incorrect on the remote.
The client machine have a built-in keyboard of JIS 106 layout,
and the primary language is set to Japanese.
But on the remote, the keyboard layout is US 101.
So a input of Shift+2 does not result " but @.
I've seen the above behavior on the 3 remote enviornments described the above.
This bug did not occcur with Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac 2.1.1, even if the system language is English and keyboard layout is Japanese.

If the client is set to Canadian English with a US keyboard the remote server is setup using a Canadian French keyboard. Using the language selection in the toolbar you can temporarily correct
the problem but the keyboard resets to french at the most inopportune times. The was a problem in the earlier RDP client and was fixed so it's sad to see it reoccur in the new client.

Hello everybody,
is there a way to create a custom word-break setting? In Mac OS 10.6, included options in the "Language & Text" prefpane are "Standard", "English", "Greek" and "Japanese". But none of these settings regard the "_" character as a word-separator, so double-klicking i.e. on the first word in "word1_word2" highlights both words. Nor can you jump from word1 to word2 in a Texteditor using the Alt-Arrow command.
Even if this goes deep into the System level, there has to be a file that's defining what is to be considered as a word-break and what not. Or somewhere there have to be the definitions for the above mentioned settings. Any clues? The ability to modify these setting wouold really help me a lot as I often have to deal with filenames consisting of "dateplus_severalwords" and renaming these files is a pain.

Word break problems when typing in Asian fonts like 'Nepali and Hindi'
Hi!
I have to type Nepali and Hindi words but the words break unnecessarily. Is there any option in InDesign CS4 to control it? I know very well that in Pagemaker these Nepali and Hindi words do not break but in InDesign. Why?
How to fix it? Any idea will be highly respected.

Thanks.Option #1: do not hyphenate the text at all. You don't say if this is all Nepali/Hindi, or mainly English text with some foreign words -- if there is no English text at all, you could disable hyphenation entirely.
Option #2: Do Not Break. If you are using character styles for the Nepali/Hindi text (for example, because you need to change the font), you could apply No Break to the entire string. Don't do this if it's more than a few words, though (or treat the spaces inbetween differently).
Option #3: Create a GREP style with just No Break in it. Then apply this to Nepali/Hindi text runs only -- http://indesignsecrets.com/search-for-foreign-language-characters-in-text.php shows you how.
I know very well that in Pagemaker these Nepali and Hindi words do not break but in InDesign. Why?
There must be a difference in the default word breaking algorithm. I wouldn't have guessed ID would break text with dedicedly foreign character sets applying its default hypenation rules, but there you go. -

When I connect to the listed remotes the client sets the keyboard layout to Latvian which is a completely different layout than Hungarian (not even close...).
- On Windows 8 if I set the language on the login screen it stays on that language after the login.
- On Windows Server 2003R2 and 2008R2 even if I set the language at login it will switch back to LV after the login.

Look Up function is not working with custom dictionary - How can I solve this?

I recently installed a Chinese-English dictionary known as 小词典 or Xiao CiDian using the .mpkg file that I downloaded from the website (here's a link: http://xiaocidian.com/). The dictionary package was added to the native Dictionary application on my Mac. When I go to the Dictionary application and search for Chinese words, there are no problems – results just come up as they should. The website claims that the Look Up function should work with this dictionary as well, and that I should be able to look up the definitions of any Chinese words that I come across (which makes sense, seeing as it's integrated into the native Dictionary application). The problem? It's not happening. I've tried all the ways that I have found to get to the Look Up pop-up dialog box – Ctrl-Cmd-D, right-click and the Lion three-finger double-tap gesture – but all that ever happens is that the dialog box comes up, saying "No results found". Does anyone know why this is happening? Should I try reinstalling the dictionary? Acrobat 9 Pro & Word 2008 doc with sections problem
I have recently switched from Windows to a MacBook Pro and am just now using Word 2008 & Acrobat 9 Pro for the Mac. I have an 11-page Word doc (created with Word XP before the change) that has several sections in it (to change page orientation). When I send that doc to the Acrobat PDF virtual printer, it creates several files corresponding to the sections in Word, but omits the first section completely. This never happened with Word XP and Acrobat 7.Is there something I missed in setting up Acrobat? Is this common with the Mac version of Acrobat?
Thanks. John.This is a long standing issue between Acrobat (Adobe/Apple/Microsoft). Both Microsoft and Adobe Blame on Apple. But the problem has been around since Mac OS 6 days and acrobat 2-3. Back then Mac didn't even you the Abobe PDF engine for visual and printing as in OSX. Adobe refuses to fix the problem because they are not as big a fish as Microsoft. Microsft if you don't fix a problem for them it means the death of your Company. Microsoft has included a work around in 2008 . That is go to Save as... and choose PDF.
It will save as one document, Unless there is a switch in Page orientation. Microsoft both on Bulletin Boards (Forums) and on website say that the code is identical for Mac and PC version except for VBA missing, key layouts and inteface changes. But MS refuses to allow Adobe a Look at their Page and section Break codes so they can cure it.
Try saving as PDF in Word 2008 make sure version ia 12.2.1. Next see if all pieces are there.
In Acrobat and choose insert pages then choose the next section. and add to end. go to end and repeat with next section, and repeat, with next section until all the pieces are together. I wish the problem was fixed it been going on since the day Acrobat came on the scene. And the aprties are so afraid and scecretive they won't work together to fix the problem. But that business these days everyone is out for themselves, and don't care who get affected in the process. -

How to set the default language in preferences- dictionary- language

i like to set the default dictionary language as well as the lookup path of the dictionary via script. I've found the property dictionary path as well as some settings for qoutation under languages with vendors:

Thats fine, but how can it set a certain language with vendor as the default language for the application itself? Under the Preferences->Dictionary dialog, I can find a dropdown showing the default language. But how can I access this default or set it?
The application object has a property object called dictionaryPreferences, but this object only contains some flags like the merge behaviour but not the default language itself. So where is it?

in the meantime I think I got it. I can setup several dictionaries for several languages. Depending on the language I use in my paragraph styles the according dictionary will be used. Fine for the desktop.
But what about the InDesign Server! I use the server via scripting and SOAP ports, webservice calls. I've launched several webservice ports, like 10001,10002,10003,10004. In this case, I can set up a vendor dictionary by providing a path via script send to one port 10001 for example. But here are two problems:
1. The other InDesign Server instances aka webservice ports and engines won't get informed about the change. I have to run the script on all instances.
2. The change only lives as long as the instance is running but doesn't get saved. After restart the instance, the setup got lost.
So can I save the dictionary-setup with an pref-xml file, all InDesign Server instances would use and read per default? -

I am using indesign for a large amount of type formatting.
My problem begins when I have a word break and I try to kerm it in to come back to the line above and it doesn't work until it's kerned far too much. When I look at the column, there is plenty of room for the remainder of the word to kern back up, but something prevents it. I checked my text formats and all the insets are set to "0"
Does anyone know what is causing my word breaks to occur when it's clear there is enough room for the words to fit on one line?

LOther things to try after Peter's suggestion.
Turn off hyphenation for that paragraph only. Or change hyphenation settings.
Play with Optical vs. Metrics in the kerning field (sometimes one works, sometimes the other.)
Play with justification: make "minimum" and "desired" 99% instead of 100--you can try it on just that line.
You can find all these in the Control Bar. There's a contextual menu at the very right when you toggle the Control Bar to Paragraph, and you should see a list that includes Hyphenation and Justification.
