Incorrect year in song info

My first post on this board. It's not Windows-specific, but I didn't see a forum for general iTunes discussions so it's going here.
Bought "I Feel Free" by Cream. Remastering notwithstanding, this track was recorded circa 1970. Right-clicked the song, selected "Get Info" and then clicked the Info tab. It shows the year as 1998, which is completely useless to me as a customer.

Amazon lists the Album as released back in 1998. If the album was purchased from the ITMS, the tag info was generated from the content providers, if it was store bought the tag info is from Gracenote, not Apple.
My guess is that that particular field referrs to the album as a whole since the album was bressed in that year, not back in 1966 (when the album was origioanlly released). Its essentially a different album, and for searching reasons, its accurate to report the year that track on that album was 1998.

  • Song info appearing incorrectly

    My iTunes library doesn't appear to correctly reflect the song info (assuming ID3).
    Example.
    I have quite a few Papa roach songs in my library. Looking at each song I can see the 'Artist' info is filled in as 'Papa Roach'. However, when I review my list of artists, they don't appear there.
    This also appears to be happening with Genre info, even though songs are labelled with say 'Rock', iTunes categorieses them into 'Reggae'.
    I'll probably have to look at that but for now I want to at least get the artists info to display correctly as it's causing my problems when finding specific artists on my iPod.

    hmmmm. lets try an experiment.
    in itunes select some of the tracks, and then go "Advanced > get CD track names". (preferably do this with tracks you've imported from commercially-produced CDs.)
    does the Gracenote query give you back the standard track information?

  • How do I stop iTunes from automatically "correcting" song info from the iTunes Store?

    I frequently rename songs that I download from the iTunes Store for various reasons. For example, when I bought Pet Shop Boys' album Electric on CD, I changed the album name of the pre-release single "Vocal" from "Vocal - Single" to "Electric", and also changed the track numbers to reflect its position on the album. The track grouped with the other tracks that I had copied from the CD, and everything seemed fine.
    However, at random times, I have found that iTunes will attempt to "correct" my changes, leading to some very bizarre circumstances. With Electric, after having the album appear correctly for over two months, it suddenly messed up. The album was still labelled as "Electric", but it appeared in alphabetical order under V, as if all of the tracks had "Vocal - Single" in the album field. It also changed Vocal to track 1, which would be correct for the single, but not for the album. I changed everything back, and while it was fixed on iTunes, the problem persisted on my iPhone - this time, creating two duplicate albums both organized under "Vocal - Single", with an interface that looked like the artist view rather than the album view. I had to delete the album completely from my iPhone and re-sync it to make the changes carry over. This has happened before with other albums where I combine iTunes Store tracks with tracks ripped from CD.
    This has also occurred when I've tried to compile multiple albums, this time entirely bought from the iTunes Store, into one album. To use another Pet Shop Boys example, there were three EP-style singles released on iTunes in support of the album Elysium. Rather than having two or three tracks each labelled as "Winner - EP", "Leaving - EP", and "Memory of the Future - EP", I reorganized them into one album called "Elysium: B-sides", and set each EP as "discs" 1, 2, and 3 respectively. Again, this worked for several months, and then, at the same time as when Electric messed up, iTunes renamed all of the tracks as "Winner - EP" and changed all of my track listings to match the original EPs they had come from. As I clicked "Get Info" on each track in iTunes however, the information snapped back to what I had input, but it was still slightly corrupted and had to be redone in order to get it back in the correct alphabetical and chronological order in my library. Even after I changed everything back, it wouldn't return to correct alphabetical order on my iPhone until I added "Elysium: B-sides" to the "Sort Album" field.
    This is not a new issue. I've had the same problem with other iTunes Store downloads under earlier versions of iTunes, OSX, and iOS. The "corrections" always seem to occur randomly. Is this automatic renaming a "feature"? And if so, how do I turn it off so I can organize the music that I've bought the way I want to?

    Hi Mhwal.  I think this may help you.
    Here's a test for you to try.
    Make sure your iTunes library is updated with your edited album names;
    Find a song on your iPhone where the album name is incorrect;
    Delete the song from your iPhone;
    On your iPhone go to "Settings>iTunes & App Store" and tap your Apple ID (highlighted in blue).
    Tap "Sign Out";
    Go back to your iTunes library and select the song/album that you want back on your iPhone;
    The iPhone should now show your edited album tag;
    Once your done you can sign back to "Settings>iTunes & App Store" and sign back in.  Your edits will hold.
    In addition, this also works with artist pictures.  I did not like the stock images iTunes associated with my artists - I wanted album art instead.  After you sign out of your Apple ID, when you move a song/album from your iTunes library to your iPhone the FIRST album you move over will be associated with that artist.
    For example, I have seven AC/DC albums but I want the cover of "Back in Black" to be associated with AC/DC on my iPhone's artist listing.  After I've signed out of my Apple ID, I transfer "Back in Black" to my iPhone and then the other six albums in any order.  "Back in Black" will be the album picture associated with AC/DC on the artist page.
    Just remember, after your changes you can sign back into iTunes through "Settings>iTunes & App Store" and your changes to edited albums and artist cover art should hold.
    I hope this helps!

  • Mp3 tagging song info rename revert PROBLEM!!!

    Hi guys,
    I can see that there are loads of people who have the same problem as me. That is... that itunes is a mp3 tagging nightmare. The problem is simple. after editing song information in itunes. sometime later, itunes will happily revert or change the info back to the original file name or only display a portion of it. Im sure you guys know what im talking bout. Someone suggested that u edit the ID3 tags with an external program. However, what i dont understand is that, my itunes last time had no problem whatsoever displaying the correctly edited song information. Suddenly, now it decides to randomly change whatever it feels like. Also, it is extremely troublesome to externally edit the song info. The whole point of itunes is to make it convenient and simple to use. What is the point of having itunes only to have to use another program to edit the info??? I have seen numerous other threads with the same problem as me. What frustrates me is that... why is Apple not doing anything bout it? and why arent they posting any solutions or answers as to why their fantastic software is behaving like a spoilt kid. Why are there no answers. It is NOT a small program. I have about 10000 songs and countless CDs. You cannot imagine what a headache it is to have spent months and months of carefully and meticulously editing the song info in itunes to perfection, only to start it up one day and find that 5000 songs are incorrectly named.
    For Apple, this is just simply unacceptable.

    Hey guys, i got this from the WMP help file...
    "Update my music files (WMA and MP3 files) by retrieving missing media information from the Internet
    Specifies that the Player automatically obtain and update missing media information for music files that are added to or are in Media Library, if the information is available. By default, the music files in your My Music folder are added to Media Library.
    The Player attempts to update any missing media information in your music files by sending data about the files to a database operated by WindowsMedia.com if this check box is selected and you perform any of the following actions:
    Use Media Library for the first time after updating the Player
    Add files to Media Library by searching your computer
    Add files to monitored folders, such as My Music
    For example, if you have music files that contain the artist name but not the album name, the Player adds the album name to the file after retrieving the information from the database.
    The Player also adds album art to files and music folders in your My Music folder."
    In light of this information, wouldnt it be fair to say that WMp will only rename the files if they are physically added by the user in WMP? If i am not using WMP to play my mp3s, then why would WMP still be tracking and altering the file names?

  • Iphoto is date stamping my imported photos with an incorrect year

    I have imported a number of photos from my camera sd cards to iphoto via the card slot on my Mac.  Some have been incorrectly year stamped (confirmed in the "info" button in iphoto) e.g. the latest import is showing 7 September 2012 and should be stamped 7 September 2013 and the photos are obviously catalogued in the incorrect date sequence in iphoto.  Is this a software fault or can I fix this myself, please? The fault has occured with different sd cards.
    HELP please.

    You can fix it with the Photos Menu command to adjut date and time.

  • I used to be able to change track & artist names & other song info in "View" / "Info"; can no longer do

    I used to be able to change track & artist names & other song info in "View" / "Info" (or Command I) but can no longer do. The info shows up "greyed". It seems to be on tracks from CDs I imported or downloaded from sources several years ago (pre Gracenotes).
    Any suggestions on how to fix?
    Thanks!

    I'm having a similar issue. I just downloaded new songs and I can't edit the information or artwork because they are all greyed out. I didn't have that problem until I upgraded to iTunes 11!

  • I've imported several CDs that are "collections", with songs by various artists.  Only a PORTION of the song info appears in iTunes, and, when a song is "clicked-on" to play it, a message appears that the "song could not be found".  Any ideas ?

    The CDs are imported into the "iTunes Media" folder, under "Compilations".   Each CD has a folder, with the name of the CD.  However, EACH SONG in the folder is assigned a sequential number as a prefix before the song's name.  For example "2-1 Sunshine of Your Love."  This prefix, I believe, prevents the song from being imported into the iTunes library.  The song's name appears in the iTunes library (with the number prefix), BUT no other song info (artist, CD name, time, etc.) shows in the iTunes library.   I am NOT designating these CD's as "complilations", but somehow, iTunes is arbitrarily assigning them to this "Compilations" folder, and then assigning sequential numbers to each song.    I am confused.  (My only remedy is to MANUALLY remove the prefix number from each song in the CD folder, within the COMPILATIONS folder, then "re-import" it into iTunes.  Cumbersome.)    Thanks in advance for any opinion, tips or guidance.

    The numeric prefixes in filenames are probably the optional disc number, followed by the track number. iTunes will pick up the Compilation flag from the Gracenote CDDB database if you ripped the tracks with iTunes, or the flag may have been set earlier if these are existing tracks you have imported into a new library.  The iTunes naming convention is <Artist>\<Album>\[<D#>-]<T##> <Name>.<Ext> where Album Artist is used instead of Artist if not blank, and Compliations is used instead of Artist when Part of a compilation is true. Empty Artist or Album values are replaced with Unknown Artist or Unknown Album respectively. With Windows, file and folder names are limited to 40 characters. If more than one file is added with the same details subsequent tracks get suffixes to separate them.
    If iTunes can't find a file that usually means that it has been moved after it was added to the library. Select a single broken track and press CTRL+I to Get Info. Look on the summary tab at the location that iTunes expects to find the file. Where is it really? Post back both paths and I might be able to figure out what has happened, and suggest a fix.

  • I would like to take a iTunes play list and put it on a USB drive for my car radio to stay in my car. Is there a way to do this through iTunes so you have all the song info and there's no number in front of the name of the song? Is there a program?

    iTunes only syncs to Apple devices.
    Assuming the media is not DRM protected, any of the media can be dragged and dropped from iTunes onto other drives (external, flash, etc) as the user chooses.

  • Updated to ios5 cant edit song info via itunes anymore

    Here's what's going on. I updated my OS on iPod Touch and when I did, all my content on it got deleted sans photos and contact info. Not too big of a deal but now when I drag songs from my music folder in windows and edit the song info in iTunes (i.e. changing Sade to Everything But The Girl) it does so in iTunes but the info isn't changed on my iPod. Any info would help and keep my hair in. Email [email protected]

    Problem Solved:
    #1) after you install iTunes and reboot as it tells you to you must start up the program then log out of the program
    #2) reboot 1 more time (this is redundant but you must do it to get your equalizer working and the ability to edit your song information).
    Everything is working correctly now.

  • I just downloaded itunes 10.6 and it will not allow me to edit song info! Why?

    why won't itunes 10.6 allow me to edit song info?

    Have you moved your iTunes library recently? Are you using a different profile?
    Right-click on your main iTunes folder and click Properties, then go to the Security tab and click Advanced. If necessary grant your account and SYSTEM full control of this folder, subfolders and files, then tick the option to replace permissions on child objects which will repair permissions throughout the library. This is the XP dialog but Windows 7 shouldn't be too different.
    If it won't let you change the permissions use the Owner tab to take ownership from an account with administer privileges.
    Also in iTunes properties tap the read-only check box until it clears, then click OK. When prompted apply the change to the folder and all files and subfolders.

  • Un able to edit song info in itunes 7

    I am currently organizing and fixing some errors in my itunes library and i'm having extreme difficulty editing song info.
    For example about half of my songs show up as blues in the genre category. So i've gone through and changed them to rock, electronic, etc. The info will change but when i double click on the track (play the track) it changes the info back to the previous settings. I went to itunes help which instructed me to uncheck "organize itunes library" in order to write the new info to the file. But this has not worked either. this is a very frustrating problem because GNDB has given some very wrong info about album names and and info and i can't reorganize it.
    Another example is a CD by Blockhead the album title is Music by Cavelight. Only 3 tracks have the correct album title the others are Blockhead Music by Cavelight, for some reason the artist name is included in the album title. When i correct the tracks that have the improper album name they do change untill the song is double clicked on, and then it resets to the previous name.
    Please help i am a DJ with lots of music and organization is KEY!
    compac laptop   Windows XP

    Select one or more tracks, press CTRL-I to Get Info.
    Are the tracks in question in .wav format? No tags there, so nothing for iTunes to read other than the filename. I have a script that get more data provided iTunes hasn't "helpfully" rearranged them.

  • Can't edit track # in song info

    In my music library, I'm able to edit song info such as artist, song name, album, etc. But I can't figure out how to change the track # of a song. I have the column displayed for track #'s, but clicking inside the track # boxes doesn't allow me to edit the numbers. This is particularly frustrating for files that don't have track numbers at all, since they're listed out of order. How can I fix this? Thanks

    You can't get to it from the main library screen.
    Right-click on the track > Get Info > Info tab
    You can change it there.

  • Lost Song Info

    OK, here's my situation:
    I have Windows XP. I realised that no album artwork was showing on my iPod nano, even though it was on iTunes (most up-to-date version). This was because the error with the "Chkdsk" thing kept appearing. After I ran that, nothing changed, but after I'd changed some setting somwhere, I thought I'd fixed the problem. But I had to stop partway through the operation so only some of it came up on the iPod.
    However, when I went back to it, I somehow accidentally deleted all song info (artist, album, album artwork etc) and now all that appears on both the iPod and iTunes is the song title. This is the case in "iPod", "Purchased" and "Library" sections. Nor is it on my hard drive.
    Is there an easy way to retrieve all lost song info quickly and easily?

    How many songs are you talking about? You can enter the information yourself for each one if you're up to it. Right click on the song file, then choose get info. On the second tab "info" where everything is probably showing up unknown, you can type in the information. I'm sorry I really don't know of another way to do this if the program can't ID the song to search the internet for details.
    Are these whole albums or individual songs? If they're albums, you could burn them to a CD and then rip them into Windows Media Player. You'll get an option to search for the album info. online before you rip the CD. You can enter the artist or album name and let Windows Media Player find the correct song details, then Windows Media Player will enter the info into all of the columns for you. Once you have these albums ripped in Media Player, you can re-import them into iTunes and the tags will be there. (Just make sure you rip using mp3 so you don't have to go through a conversion process to bring them into iTunes.) Album art doesn't transfer from Windows Media Player to iTunes. You'll have to hand add this.
    I don't rip in iTunes so I don't know how the program tags unknown albums. If iTunes can search for and add tag information to unknown albums--skip the Windows Media Player step and just re-rip everything in iTunes.
