Increase HDcapacity of hp pavilion dv5220us laptop

My laptop keeps restarting after I installed windows 7 and the Sound isint working either.
I want to Increase HDcapacity of hp pavilion dv5220us laptop from 120 GB to 500GB and the RAM to 2GB. Is it possible to do that and can I install windows 8. Recently a technician told me that it might not be possible to increase the HD capacity to 500 GB as it's an old laptop. I love this laptop and wanna fix it badly

It IS old. Built about 2006. It does use SATA hard drives (current form) so you can install a 500 gig hard drive and it can take up to 2 gigs of DDR (original version) 667 memory. A 500 gig hard drive and 2 x 1 gig modules of memory are going to cost you about $125. I would not spend that kind of money on a machine of that age. It will not run Windows 8 to full effect because the video chip is too old. Even Vista and 7 are a stretch. It was made to run XP and that would be the best OS for it. If it reboots and the sound does not work, you might even need a new motherboard.
Save your money for a new laptop or at least one that can handle the modern internet environment.

It means the hard drive has likely died. It is going past where the hard drive would be in the boot order into network (PXE) boot. To double check, tap F10 as you power up and see if you can find the hdd in the BIOS. If not you just need a new hdd.

  • Pavilion dv4405nr laptop hard drive and recovery

    Hi,
My daughter's Pavilion dv4405nr laptop's HDD (Samsung MP0804H Spinpoint M Series 80GB) is dead. It doesn't boot, and BOIS HDD test gives error 7. I took the HDD out, and connected it to several PCs (home, work) using two HDD universal adapters (like a BYTECC, and a NewTech) I left it spinning for about 6 hours. The PC sees the mass storage device, but it never shows up in MyComputer with a letter assigned. By right-clicking the working HDD and checking its properties, it lists all HDDs and I can see the damaged one listed w/o a letter assigned. I click to load volume information but all displays zeroes. I downloaded a Seagate-Samung utility to test the drive, and got the same error I had gotten with the laptop's BIOS utility.
Can this HDD be recovered? Is there a utility that can recover it?
If the answer is no: I connected the HDD back into the laptop, and set the boot sequence to DVD drive. I inserted the "All-In-One Recovery DVDs" for this laptop, but they didn't boot. Aren't the recovery DVDs bootable?
Your help and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
    Sincerely,
    Richard

It looks like this unit came with Windows XP. It really depends on when in XP's production cycle the unit was released on how recovery works.
I am afraid the HDD is beyond salavaging at this point and the hard drive will need to be replaced. The recovery more than likely will fail on the bad HDD.
Early units came with recovery disks, one of which was labeled Operating System, and some used the F10 recovery and required making the recovery disks using a program (these units did not come with disks).
Is there a disk labeled as Operating System or Disk 1 of X?
If it is Disk 1 of X, then you would start with it, but start with Operating System if there is one labeled that.

Open your Displays system preferences.  Is there an Arrangement tab and does it show two screens?  If no Arrangement tab then your mac does not know it has two screens.  Maybe smc and pram reset will shake it free and maybe not.  Maybe there's something wrong with the connection.  Thunderbolt plugs are similar to mini-displayport plugs so make sure the plug is pushed firmly in so that essentially all the metal part disappears inside the socket.  The plugs can be a little tricky in that you need to make sure the plug is fully seated in their socket.
If you do see two screens in the Arrangement tab then click Detect Displays and Gather Windows to get the Displays preferences of the other monitor on to your main monitor.  Check the resolution and if there is a refresh rate check that as well.

Impossible to say with no information on which to base a diagnosis. "can't download" by itself doesn't tell us anything useful. What OS is your laptop running, and where exactly are things going wrong, including error messages if any?

  • I have an HP Pavilion g6 laptop, and am trying to set up my recovery discs. I get an error message

I have an HP Pavilion g6 laptop, and am trying to set up my recovery discs.  I get an error message that states "inserted media not supported".  I am using CD-R Music discs.  Is the problem "Music" ?  Will it not recognize a blank music disc?

    Hi,
Yes, it is the discs that are the problem - you will need to use good quality DVD+R or DVD-R discs.  See the section under the sub-heading 'Create a set of operating system Recovery Discs' on the link below.

  • HP Pavilion G6 Laptop Stuck on 0%

Hello, I have recently encountered a major problem in charging my HP Pavilion G6 laptop. I had not been using my laptop for a week as I had been using it frequently beforehand. I charged it and when I booted it up it said it had 0% while it was still connected to the charger. I left to to charge for longer and even though it said it was charging, the laptop remained on 0% of power. It still works (Very slowly now), but if I remove the charger the laptop immediatly shuts down due to it displaying that I have 0% of charge. I assume the problem lies with the battery, but before I buy a new battery I'd just like to know if this problem can be explained and can it be solved with a more practical method? Thank you.

Hi there, glad you posted your question here before buying another battery. From what I've found, there are still a few steps you can try first
Please take a look through this whole guide, hopefully it'll help kickstart that battery and the connections back to life:

? i have a hp pavilion g6  laptop comes on wont boot 4 months old  wont boot to hd or cd can get to bios it dont help tryed to restore was not much on it .

    Hi,
If it won't boot from the Hard Drive or Optical Drive, you may well have a fault with the Sata Controller on the Motherboard - at the end of the day, by far your best option as your notebook is still under warranty, is to contact HP and arrange for it to be repaired.

  • Forgotten my BIOS password on my hp Pavilion dv2718 laptop!

I have forgotten my BIOS password on my hp Pavilion dv2718us laptop. When I access Setup through F2 and then try three times unsuccessfully, I get code 08653. The specifics of my laptop are:
    HP Pavilion dv2718us laptop
    Phoenix BIOS ID F.27 11/27/2008
Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP2
    Please help ... gww

Decided to go ahead and pull the CMOS battery and clear the password which worked fine. When I went into the BIOS, I realized that the first password given me - (generic Phoenix) pkxdirv actually worked because I had pressed F2 and not F10. F2 apparently only brings up the Diagnostics part of the setup, at least on this laptop. Thanks for the help ...

  • Internal Microphone not working on Pavilion dm4 Laptop

I have an IDT High Definition Audion CODEC internal microphone on a Pavilion dm4 laptop.
I was advised by an helpful HP support person to uninstall and re-install drivers and this I have done a couple of times.
Occasionally the microphone works but more often it is still not working from Start up. It is not working today!
I am trying to use Skype.
I have checked that the driver is up to date. ( right click on IDT in Device Manager) and this was confirmed.
I would be very grateful for any other suggestions.
    Christopher

    Thanks for the suggestion.
I opened the Sound control panel as you suggested and the Internal Mic (IDT) is shown in the list of microphones and has a green tick ( and is already enabled in properties). It is selected as a default device. ( the icon shows a picture of the laptop indicating the microphone on the lid  not the picture of the microphone as shown in your clip)
In the Sound control window there is a sound indicator panel to the right of the internal Mic Icon that has a green bar that moves up and down - indicating that the microphone is responding to sound.
However it is still not working in Skype and it is the Internal Mic that is selected as the device here.
Very frustrating as I really would like to Skype. I tried uninstalling and re-installing Skype Version 5.5.0.117 and this has not made any difference.
    Any other thoughts?
    Christopher

  • Pavilion dv6885se Laptop Has a Blank Screen

    Hello,
Having a problem woth my laptop.  First the PC specs.
    HP Pavilion dv6885se laptop
    Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 @2.10Ghz
    Vista Home Premium 32-bit
    250GB HD
    NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS Video
Starting yesterday (1/8), the laptop would not boot up.  It shows a blue screen (not Blue Screen of Death) that gives the option to repair or restore the system.  I chose to repair because the restore was going to wipe the hard drive clean and reinstall the base system (factory specs).
I did this numerous times until finally at startup, I pressed the ESC key.  Then there was only a black screen.  Powering off and back on left the system in the same state:  It was on, but no video.  I connected the laptop to an external monitor, but still no video.  Then after power off/power on a few more times, the screen came up all white.  I watched the screen a few minutes and noticed that it was slowly “drawing” multiple colored lines vertically on the screen.
I went to hp.com to search for help.  I did see one bit of help.  The thread stated something about “crashing the BIOS”.  To reset it, power off the laptop. press and hold the ESC key before powering back on.  This restored the video somewhat.  I was able to see the screen on the external monitor.  I was back to the blue screen with options.  I did the repair option numerous times and rebooted numerous times until finally the system was up and running.
While the laptop was still connected to the external monitor, tried changing some of the display settings.  During all of this time while the laptop was plugged into the monitor, the laptop lid was closed.  I just happened to open the lid, and the laptop screen came on.  The laptop screen would never come on after power on, but would come on after changing display options and opening the lid.
Today, that no longer works the laptop is on, but the only video is using the external monitor.
Any ideas on what this could be?  Also, if it is the laptop screen, would it be better to get it fixed or replace the laptop?  Thank you.
    Warmest regards,
    Fred Tolan

    Hello fredtolan.
This sounds like you may be experiencing a GPU issue or a larger motherboard issue.  The fact that you're having display issues on both the integrated and external monitors would point to this.
Had you experienced any other problems prior to this?  BSODs or freezes?
I would like you to perform a hard reset first.  This reinitializes the hardware and can solve a wide range of issues.  Try the following.
    Shut down the notebook.
    Remove battery and AC power.
Press and hold power button for 15-20 seconds three times.
    Replace battery and AC power.
Attempt to boot notebook and post the result.
I would also like you to test the RAM and hard drive using the built in diagnostics.  You may not be able to do this as I'm not sure if the pre-Windows loading screens will display on the external monitor.  Follow the steps in this document and make sure to post the results if you're able to run the tests.
I hope you have a great weekend!
