  • Anyone use Ethernet with power line adapter to increase Internet speed ?

I have been using Wi-Fi for decades on all my connections and I have never used Ethernet because of the requirement to extend the wiring throughout the three levels of my house. I recently came across articles on power line adapters and thought this maybe the ideal way to increasing the speed not only on my 5K iMac on the bedroom level but also on my Mac mini used as a media centre down in the basement where I now intend to introduce Kodi et al to my Apple TV to increase my
my enjoyment of Cable TV, which I am finding is becoming less and less enjoyable from an entertaining POV.
I would appreciate hearing from others who have successfully chosen this route and who can express their views on the matter before I take the plunge.
    Thank you.

My router is the Apple Airport Extreme which is 802.11ac. and the Bell modem (Sagemcom 2864) has been in use with Bell Fibe TV for the past 3 years. Bell replaced the Bell receivers in January when my contract expired and I threatened to opt out.  They are Arris models and are really better, but they never replaced the Bell modem, which gives me a whole lot of trouble from time to time, but I intend to bring their 'technician' back to attempt to resolve that situation. Three years these days can result in improvements in electronic components that are surprising to say the least.
I'm really amazed to see the kind of speeds that 'Old Toad' reported, since my speed tests rarely exceed 17 Mbps Down and 7 Mbps UP, which explains why I am interested in seeking higher speeds. There is another local ISP that offers a choice of higher speeds, which Bell hasn't so far, so I may because of my predicament switch ISPs if there is no improvement available from Bell.
Thank you Allan Eckert, "Old Toad'  and 'woodmeister' for your responses. I obviously need to find an ISP who can offer speeds double what I am having to endure now. One feature that is in Bell's favour is that the TV picture quality is actually superb, if only the Internet speed was on a par with that.

  • Will airport express increase internet speed?

I currently uses the net wirelessly with a 802.11b wireless router.
I was wondering if purchasing an airport express which uses 802.11g would increase my internet speed or if i'll just be wasting my money lol

Thanks for the response... I have to say i'm stlightly confused...you say that the internet will not become any faster, and I understand why from your explanion...but what then is the difference between my "wireless transfer" being sped up and the speed of my intenet?....in other words what do you mean by "wireless transfer" and what is the advantage of it being sped up?

  • Increase internet speed when DNS and ISP are good

How do you increase your internet performance when?
    1. Your ISP is great. I have Verizon blast.
    2. download and upload are not bad
    3. You do not want to be attached to ethernet cord.
    4. namebench says your current DNS servers are the "fastest".
    5. I have a hunch I could do more to combate the "noise" coming from the other people in my apartment complex. I have tried changing channels from default but it doesn't seem to make to large of a difference because some of their routers seem to randomly picl channels, sometimes the ones I'm on.
    So here is the challange:
How do you increase your internet performance when? Are there settings you can use within Airport utility? Thanks.

The best way to find where the problem is without using test gear is by the process of elimination.
Test you LAN using LAN Speedtest.   First test using Ethernet connections and see if you can get speeds of 90+ Mbps.  Much higher is possible if the equipment you are testing with has gigabyte capability at both ends.
If you can't  90+  on your LAN  there is a problem with your LAN setup that needs to be addressed.
Then you can test  speeds on your LAN using WiFi.
Using Speedtest introduces to many additional variables making it very difficult to diagnose throughput problems.
Once you know that your LAN is up to standard then you can point at Verizon.

  • Change number to increase Internet speed

Will changing my landline number to one closer to home help the speed of Internet connection? Improve tv connection ? Thanks for advice .

changing your number is immaterial it is the length of your line from the exchnage if adsl and from cabinet if fibre that decides your connection speed

  • How can I use 2 3g usb modems to increase internet speed (connection bonding)?

I live in Bolivia, which if you don't know has the worst internet on planet earth.. i.e. poorest reliability, availability, speed, most expensive, etc..
I currently have a couple of 4g usb modems (which have speeds way slower than 3g.. we're talking 1-200 kbs = ( )... I'm thinking I can probably bond them, or do somekind of proxy thing so that I can browse the web across both of the dongles.. I know that will not equal 2 times the speed.. but anything would help..
Hoping someone here has some ideas.
The modems are both HUWEI and I can connect them via the network preferences pane.
I know this is possible on ubuntu, but I don't really want to set up a linux server virtual or otherwise if I can avoid it.
    Many thanks,
    George

My internet speed is too low. How to increase the internet speed?

    Hi
:D you cannot increase internet speed!!!
It depends on your internet service provider and only the ISP can increase it!
If you have some issues with the data transfer speed then I recommend contacting your internet service provider!

Problem: slow connection. I have an iMac (2007) running on Mac OS X 10.6.8. I just had my internet speed increased from 1 to 3 Mbps but my connection slowed down considerably. Do I have to change any setting on the computer, and how?

One possibility is that you may need to "Upgrade" your Cable /DSL Modem if you have an older unit.  ISP's that provide your Internet service in recent years have been switching over from DOCSIS 2.1 version Modems to DOCSIS 3.0 version Modems, which handle the new higher data streaming speeds the ISP's are offering.  I would suggest you call your ISP's Technical Support and inquire about this possibility.

  • How to increase internet access speed of OS X 10.5.8 whilst using telstra prepaid wirless broadband internet stick in Darwin, Australia

Is it possible  to increase internet access speed of Mackbook Pro OS X 10.5.8 whilst using telstra prepaid wirless broadband internet stick in Darwin, Australia?
    How can i do this?

Network Utility (in the Utilities folder) can tell you, in the Info pane, what speed you are actually connecting at.
Just set the interface to the one you are using (which may show up as en2 or something). Link Staus and speed are shown along with error counts.
If the data rate is very different from what you expected, you may have it manually set to a lower rate.
YouTube files are enormous -- that may be the best it can do.

  • I have connected a airport extreem to my network and do npot see any increase in internet speeds

I have purchased a apple airport extreem and do not see any benifit to doing so. Download speeds and upload speeds are the same and streaming with my apple tv is still very slow.

Your Internet speed is controlled by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and the plan that you have chosen with them. If you need a faster Internet connection speed, then you need to talk with your ISP about a faster Internet plan.
In other words, the AirPort Extreme cannot make the signal that it receives from your ISP go any faster.
The AirPort Extreme is capable of handling far greater speeds than your ISP can ever hope to provide, so think of the speed on your AirPort Extreme network as if it were a fire hose.....and speed delivered by your ISP as if it were a garden hose.
You can connect the garden hose to the fire hose with the right adapter, but you will get no more water out of the fire hose than the garden hose can deliver.

  • Your program is so slow, I had to go to Internet Explorer to increase my speed.

I have deleted all my history,, cookies & etc to increase the speed I once had. I am asking for your help???

When the screen goes black, can you try hitting CTRL+Q to quit the program? Let us know if that quits the program and restores the screen back to normal.
Here's how to start Firefox in safe mode and reset all your prefs to see if that fixes the problem: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Resetting%20preferences?s=safe+mode&r=2&e=es&as=s

  • Following instructions on how to increase the speed of my Internet.

I received a letter telling me how to upgrade my internet to a higher speed.  The directions given in the letter say to unplug my modem from the outlet.  There are four different wires coming out of my modem.  Which one am I supposed to unplug and does it mean unplug from the power source in the wall or unplug from the back of my computer?

After receiving 2 or 3 letter for a year telling me that my modem was no longer supported and I needed to buy a new one, I recently received the very same letter telling me to unplu and re-plug my modem to double my internet speeds.  Why?  Is this some sort of a scam to track me or what?  I mean, if my modem is no longer supported, then how can it can now suddently be twice as fast on the same 15 year old cable?  BTW, I am paying $10 a month to rent the one I have now, so why wouln't they simply have offered to replace it for me as opposed to requested that I buy a new one?  ODD!!!  Comcast's management reminds me of a cross between the Teamsters and a New Jersey trash company.

  • Poor internet speed with time capsule or Airport extreme

I'm trying to find away to increase the throughput of my 1st generation tme capsule. i'm getting a 33% drop in speed over wireless compared to wired conncetions.
    current setup
Virginmedia XXL broadband  100Mbit down  5Mbit up.
Modem standard virginmedia modem (not the superhub) connected to Apple time capsule (500Mb) @ 1000Mbit full duplex
time capsule reset to default and then configured to use 5Ghz band, channel 36 . (no other networks in the area using this band) tested using wifi scanner and istumbler
    tested down/up speed using www.vmspeed.com
    wired connection
    105Mb/sec download   4.9Mb/sec upload
    wireless connection
    73.14Mb/sec download   4.7Mb/sec upload
i have tried testing with an airport extreme 3rd Gen with the same setup and get the same results.
Tested using a 2008 Macbook running Lion 10.7.3 and also tested using 2010 Macbook unibody running snow leopard 10.6.8. both laptops connecting to wireless network at 270Mb/sec and are both exhibiting the same drop in speed over wireless. only one laptop connected to the network at a time.
is thier a limit to the time capsule/airport extreme wireless throughput?

    Further to Bob's comments..
A Gen1 TC will be using marvel wireless chip and your 2008 and 2010 Macbook will use atheros and/or broadcom cards.. Just open your system profiler and look for info on the airport. We find the mixture of wireless chipsets especially older draft N and later N products can give very varied results.
The very fact you are linking at 270 and not 300mbps shows some reduction from theoretical max speed.. and really to get over 100mbps with any wireless you need perfect setup.. matched wireless chips etc.
Do a test uploading and downloading a file to the TC to see if the LAN speed is better than internet speed.
In reality I think you are doing especially well.. we see loads of people complaining about slow internet here who are getting less than 10% of the speed they get direct when routed through the TC. And on most occasions the limit in speed is not really going to affect what you do, as the real links to the internet are not that fast.
