How do I Increase nunber of cells in spreadsheet? I open an excell spreadsheet in Apple Works and only goes up to cell number 16384. Thanks, Rob

You can increase the number of rows & columns in Format > Document… to the limits listed in the AppleWorks Technical Specifications.

The manual says go to the table menu and select 'merge cells.' But I can't find the table menu.

AppleWorks does not merge cells in spreadsheets. You can, though, get the same effect in a couple of ways.
1. Text in a cell will overflow into empty cells the right if left aligned, to the left if right aligned & to both sides if center aligned.
2. Create a floating text box to hold the text.

"frozen" cell in spreadsheet

While running AppleWorks 6.2.9 on a G4 iBook (OS 10.9.1), one cell in one of my spreadsheets has "frozen": I can't delete it, edit it, lock or unlock it, nothing. I've searched high & low and found nothing to restore this one cell to proper operating condition. Meanwhile, everything else in this one spreadsheet is working just fine. Is there a fix for this problem?

Must be an error is some part of your specs:
G4 iBook is reasonable, as that was the last iBook series.
AppleWorks 6.2.9 was the last version of AppleWorks, so that could happen on an iBook G4
But OS X 10.9.1 can't enter into the mix for several reasons.
The last version of OS X able to run on a G4 processor is Leopard (v10.5.x)
The last version of OS X able to run Rosetta, an environment required for running Power PC applications (including AppleWorks) is Snow Leopard (v10.6.x). Snow Leopard requires an intel processor; the G4 is an IBM/Motorola product.
Regarding the issue at hand, I would suggest a couple of possible solutions:
Try Saving the document as an AppleWorks 5 file, then opening that file using AppleWorks 6. The required translations to v5 then back to v6 has been known to flush out a few problems.
Try copying the whole spreadsheet, then pasting it into an empty spreadsheet in a new document. Like the process above, this has sometimes been enough to remove issues causing problems.

(1) your title ask the way to link different spreadsheets.
In Numberland, a spreadsheet is an entire document.
There is no way to link different documents.
(2) in the message, you ask the way to link different tables.
This feature is available and is described in iWork Formulas and Functions User Guide (which is available for free from the Help menu).
Getting the info just requires a simple search in this available resource !

How Can I extract the value from a cell from the last line of an excell 2000 spreadsheet and display it on the front panel of Labview 6.1 ?

The UsedRange returns a range object from a Worksheet object. To get the last row, you would use this VBA: ActiveSheet.UsedRange.Rows.Count
In LabVIEW you need to cascade the property nodes:
Worksheet Property UsedRange into
Range Propery Rows into
Range Property Count
You can then use the Count value as the row index to select the desired cell.

Cannot name a reference cell in Spreadsheet

Hi,
Does anyone have any suggestions. I am trying to name a reference cell (a single cell) which will contain a value referenced in the formulae in many other cells. This is a change to an otherwise fully functioning and useful spreadsheet. When I select the cell and access the name drop down menu the "Define" button is greyed out and remains that way whatever I try to name the cell. Is this an unfixable bug or am I just stupid! I am running Snow Leopard and Appleworks 6.2.9. I have had no other problems at all. So this is strange and makes me suspect that I am doing something wrong. The cell has not been used before so there should be no clash with any formulae. I have also checked and it is unlocked. I don't get any warning messages, the "Define" button is simply permanently greyed.

I don't know what has happened here but I have just had another go and naming a reference cell and this time it worked. So it seems that there was some clash going on in my computer that prevented the function from working. Weird but solved now.

I hate transparent spreadsheets.

Numbers 3.5.2 has (on my computer) transparent spreadsheets. You can see the data in the cells of spreadsheets beneath the one you are looking at if you have them overlapping. How do I make the spreadsheets behave like a piece of paper? I do not want to look through any of the spreadsheets. This is like printing spreadsheets on transparency plastic rather than paper.

AW 6 Spreadsheet: Calculate Now vs Auto Calculate

I added data to a cell of spreadsheet "A" to see if it will "Auto Calculate" in spreadsheet "B". It didn't. Not even after saving and closing. It only updated after I selected "Calculate Now". Can someone tell me why this is?

AppleWorks AutoCalc function is triggered by a change in the value contained in a cell in that spreadsheet. As the change in value in your case occurs externally, there's noting to trigger AutoCalc into action.

Got it. The purer "spreadsheet way" to avoid duplication of data would be to record commissions in a separate table, and extract the sums corresponding to each "heading" with a formula, something like this:
The formula in D2, copy pasted down, is:
=SUMIF(Commissions::$A,$A2,Commissions::$C)
This says, add up everything in column C of the Commissions table where the value in column A of the Commissions table is the same as the value in column A of this row.
This takes a one-time setup (and you have to make sure the values in column A of both tables are consistent) but thereafter there are advantages. Among them, you can sort and filter your transactions or your commissions to get different views.
Splitting and merging cells in spreadsheets generally spells trouble, even in Numbers 2.3, though it sounds as if you've been lucky.

Do I need to release UITableViewCell accessoryView in my iPhone app?

The memory management documentation says I need to release objects I create with alloc.
In my case I am creating a custom view (a UIButton) using alloc and assigning to the cell.accessoryView. If I use a temporary object, I need to release it after making the assignment, that I understand, but do I need to include [cell.accessoryView release] somewhere too? Am I still responsible to release the button I've created? If not, why is that?
None of the examples I can find in the Table Programming Guide address this one way or the other.

if you want to "get rid" of the accessoryView in that cell later you just need to
cell.accessoryView = nil;
This will cause the cell to release the button which drops the retaincount to 0

Can a Pie Chart have a variable number of slices?

Is there a way to dynamically limit the NUMBER of slices that a pie chart shows?
For instance, sometimes there might be 10 elements, sometimes 6 (last 4 are 'blank') or maybe 5 (last 5 are blank).
Yes I know I can keep on reducing/increasing the Excel cells to include...but is there a way to include only certain ones as the data exists?

My Behaviour tab for my pie chart does not HAVE the "ignore end blanks option"
A Pie chart behaviour only includes "Display Status, Display Status Key, Entry Effect, Entry Duration and "Animation Enabled"
I can't seem to find the "Ignore End Blanks" on any tab

Matrix Report Limitation

I am working on a matrix report with 9i Report Builder.
Normally, a matrix type report would have the layout similar to the following, with column headers (a-e) cross with x, y, z rows.

Is it possible for me to break the column headers into 2 rows instead of one?
i.e.the column header should displayed like this:

and the data row should be displayed like this for x, y, z row respectively:

4 5
How should I do that?

Just increase the matrix cell to accommodate the desired fields and give horizontal frame as fixed, in such cases
the frame will automatically wrap.
