Increase the SGA Memory

Hi,
Iam using oracle 9i OS Solaris version 9.2.0.6
I am new to Oracle Database and i learn DBA any help me.
My Database Ram Size is 16 Gb
Now the SGA Size is below
Total System Global Area 3747585360 bytes
Fixed Size 736592 bytes
Variable Size 1593835520 bytes
Database Buffers 2147483648 bytes
Redo Buffers 5529600 bytes
Now i want to increase the SGA size to 5 Gb
How to increase the SGA Size and give the examples SGA Based parameters also i want to increase so Kindly Help.
Regards,
Suresh Kumar

Hi.It is correct that you must look into the documentation as the first-point-of-resource.It will be more quicker than to wait for the reply here. Not to say that don't post your question but do a search, get some thing in your hand, read it and when you dont understand it than post the question here.It will be more better approach of learning.
For your question , in 9i you can't increase the total memory for your SGA on the fly as like you can (to some extent). If you want to increase the total memory allocated to your SGA than you need to change the parameters which constitute the total memory for the SGA in 9i.REad here.
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96521/create.htm#998095
SGA_MAX_SIZE parameter controls the total memory allocated to your SGA in 9i.You need to change its value in the parameter file/spfile and bounce your db to reflect teh changes.

  • After upgrading to Lion, the Finder will increase the virtual memory while using external HD

after upgrading to Lion, the Finder will increase the "virtual memory size" while using external HD. I check it using Activity Monitor and found that "Finder" wll increase the "Virtual Memory Size" and "Private Memory Size". and then after a while. the system told me my HD is full and hanging there.
My External HD is 1TB. and I have installed new version Paragon NTFS for Mac V.9.01. I am not sure it is related or not.
but I attached my external HD. the "Finder" will start to increase the "Virtual Memory Size".
please help out this case and solve this issue.
    thank you !!!

The one has nothing to do with the other. Virtual memory size and Private memory size are used by developers to analyze their software. it has nothing to do with anything related to the user.

SGA size on 8i is static , and for increasing the size you have to make the changes in the pfile and bounce the database
First thumb rule is that your SGA should not exceed more than 40% of your PHYSICAL RAM in oracle <= 8i version. You can go around 80% from oracle 9i onwards

    Getting message "storage almost full"

One usually large user of storage space is photos and videos. You could import them to a computer and then delete them from the iPad: Import photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your Mac or Windows PC - Apple Support
You can also go to Settings > General > Usage and click on "Manage Storage" (in the Storage section, not the iCloud section) and that will show what is using the storage and may help you decide if you want to delete some apps or something else.

The current size for both SGA and PGA can be shown depending on the version of the db. For 10g, the SGA size is shown by sga_target parameter and PGA size is shown by pga_aggregate_target parameter. For 11g, the parameter memory_target sets them both.

So i believe, I need to increase the SGA and PGA size...No, IMO, your believe doesn't hold much base as the evidence that you have used is insufficient. What is the debugging mode or compile mode ? For what purpose you are using these modes? 200 million is not a very large number if you ask me. Tell us your db version and based on it, generate a Statspack or AWR report and post here.

The current version of Mavericks is 10.9.4. To update yours download and install OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo).
You can upgrade RAM to the maximum your model will support. That would be:
    Maximum Memory
16 GB (Actual) 8 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
About OS X Memory Management and Usage
Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory & determine how much RAM is used
OS X Mavericks- About Activity Monitor
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

  • Suggestion  in increasing the SGA and PGA after increase in the RAm of the machine .

    Hi All,
Need an expert suggestion on the change's  in the SGA and PGA of the oracle database after increasing the size of the machines RAM .
We have 64G of RAM in the machine .
There are 9 DB's running on  oracle 10g  and 11g  on  this machine
The total SGA of all the database's is around 18G .
    DB1  has 2G of MAX_SGA_SIZE
    DB2 has  8G  of MAX_SGA_SIZE
    DB3 has 1G   of MAX_SGA_SIZE
    DB4 has 2G    of MAX_SGA_SIZE
    DB5  has 676M   of MAX_SGA_SIZE
    DB6   has 1.5G   of MAX_SGA_SIZE
    DB7 has  1.2 G   of MAX_SGA_SIZE
    DB8 has  675M   of MAX_SGA_SIZE
    DB9  has 672 M   of MAX_SGA_SIZE
Now the machine RAM is up  to  96G  64+ 32
what would be the suggestion on the increase in the SGA and PGA max size .
Any expert suggestion is highly apprciated .
    Thanks in Advance

Thanks for the reply. as earlier i was using oc4j server. Now i have downloaded oracle application server 10.1.2., but now i am not able to make connection to application server. I have installed only the j2ee container and oc4j server in application server.
can you tell me how to do that?
do we need to configer AS before we make connection

  • My external HD increases the kernel_task memory usage.

I use an external firewire hard drive, SmartDisk FireLite, on my eMac.
the kernel_task memory usage (RSIZE) goes up to over 400MB,
whenever I connect my external hard drive to my computer.
normally, the kernel_task uses 100 to 150 MB
with all scanner, printer, keyboard, mouse, and etc connected.
soon after I disconnect the external HD,
the kernel_task memory goes down to the normal usage.
I don't know how kernel_task works, so I am not sure if the issue is normal...
Does any kind of external hard drive take a lot of memory for kernel_task???
If I use a USB hard drive, this won't happen???
400MB for kernel_task is a lot to me,
especially when i try to use softwares like photoshop, indesign, and etc...
so, if I could save the kernel_task memory, it would help me tremendously.
I would really appreciate it if you could give me any suggestion or answer.

Thank you very much for mentioning the application.
I've already downloaded and tried the shareware.
It was great and provided more free space after running the program,
I am pretty satisfied with the results I got.
In fact, it gives me about 250MB more in free space on average.
It would almost cover the memory loss caused by my external HD.
However, I still hope there would be a way to stop my external HD eating much memory...
Recently I found my ipod shuffle which I've also used to store files won't affect the kernel_task at all and barely use memory...
I was thinking to get a new external HD as an option,
but I am worried if the same problem would remain with the new HD...

  • Increasing the SGA Size to Reduce CPU Run Queues?

I got the following e-mail message from one of our UNIX admins and wanted to know if anyone can shed some light on this:
I was just talking to [a consultant] about the problems on [the database server] and he pointed out that he has seen extremely high CPU run queues on this server, despite the fact that average CPU usage is not hitting 100%. We did some more digging and memory is being poorly utilized on this server. There is a lot of available memory that is not being used. We think that the run queues are running up because we have multiple reports coming in and sitting on the individual CPUs but they aren't able to fully utilize the available CPU. We were wondering if it would be possible to adjust the database to use more of the available memory and see if that allows the queries to use the CPU more effectively.

So, there are a lot of things that could be happening, and your post doesn't even begin to point in the right direction. Is your system heavily batched? You might speed report things up by slowing down the batch and letting other things use the cpu's. What does Oracle think it is waiting on?
As the comments cited above suggest, Cary's book addresses how to figure these things out. Big CPU run queues are certainly an indication of tuning necessity, perhaps on both the Oracle and OS side. It could even be something silly like I/O being too slow so the CPU's are waiting on that stuff. There are enough variables involved it can very quickly become like squeezing balloon animals if you don't use a structured approach.
So, what all hardware is involved? What are your init.ora parameters? What exact versions of everything? What do OS utilities show?

  • Increase the sga to 8gb

We want to increase sga 8gb, knowing that we have the physical size of the ram 24 to go.
we followed the configuration steps as the oracle note 225349.1, we modified the boot.ini file by adding the / PAE, the AWE is configured to 2147483648, when starting the instance we have the error message ORA-00371: not enough shared pool memory, Should Be atleast 434653184 bytes
    the parameters to configure
    test.__db_cache_size = 1207959552
    test.__java_pool_size = 4194304
    test.__large_pool_size = 4194304
    test.__shared_pool_size = 1038090240
    test.__streams_pool_size = 0
    *. db_block_buffers = 1179648
    *. SGA_TARGET = 0
    *. SGA_MAX_SIZE = 7000M
    *. use_indirect_data_buffers = TRUE

    Hi,
PermGen space implies the perm space allocated is not sufficient, not the heap space. Please add the following to the command line -XX:MaxPermSize=128M.
    Hope that helps!
