Increased Fan Speed While Playing Halo 3

Hi Sir,
While i was playing a demo version for Halo 3 on my macbook, the speed of the fan increased. Is that normal?
And Do you recommend me to use the macbook to play the game or should i buy imac for it?
With Regards
Vikram

Yes, high fan speed should be expected for a high demand game.
The Fans max speed is about 6,200 RPM.
If you would like more info about your system you can get the iStat Pro Wedget (free)

  • Increase Fan Speed

How can I increase the internal fans in my computer? I only want like a 10% or so increase because the thing just gets so darn hot when I play games...Is there an easy way to control it so I can even create a script that when I have the game loaded it will increase their speed 10-20% and when I quit they will revert to default?

    Download and install SMCFanControl: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/31029
With this program you can increase the default fan speeds. You can also create multiple presets for instance one for a slightly increased fan speeds which you may keep it at during normal use. Then have a another higher setting that you set it to when you are going to play games. This will require you to manually change the setting each time. It's easy enough to do though.
If you are not already I would recommend installing iStat Pro or Temperature Monitor so that you can monitor your iMacs internal temperatures. This will help you to determine the best settings for your fans.

  • Any possibility of increasing fan speed on dv5 1045tx

I want to increase the fan speed because my dv5 1045tx gets too hot. On idle my  cpu ranges from 45Cto 55C  and my gpu stays at about 60C. When I play any game(like cod4 on highest and lowest graphics settings) my laptop's gpu goes up to 91C to 98C and cpu going to about 80C to 90C. Old games like prince of persia warrior within bring my cpu up to 95C to 98C. Without being able to increase fan speeds, I lost my freedom of playing games. Can someone please help?
    Used speedfan to check temps

Many times a laptop overheating is directly related to the cooling of the processor. The main culprit is the fan. The fan sucks in air from the bottom and blows it out the side. It will also suck in hair, dust, and other debris. That stuff often gets trapped by the heat sink and over time builds up in a layer which chokes off the cool air going to the processor making the fan work harder.
    Check this out:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01657439&tmp_track_link=ot_faqs/top_issues/en_u...
What I recommend is getting some canned air and blowing out the vents in the side and bottom of the laptop. If after doing this you still have problems with over-heating, and your laptop is in warranty, you can take your laptop to a HP Authorized Service Center and ask them to clean the fan and heatsink. You can check your warranty here:
    http://www13.itrc.hp.com/service/ewarranty/warrantyResults.do?admit=109447627+1286541891570+28353475
If it is out of warranty, consider searching for the maintenance manual for your specific model, in the manual there are schematics for taking apart the laptop. Cleaning the fan is much easier that removing a motherboard, so don't feel to intimidated by the idea. Also you can remove the heatsink and then remove the thermal grease and apply a new layer which also helps alleviate heat related issues.

  • Increasing fan speed and temperature

my temperatures and fan speeds are slowly getting higher and louder on my imac g5 2nd gen (17", w/isight, 1.9ghz). i've never noticed my fans before. the only time i ever used to notice my imac made any noise at all was in the dead of night when i shut it down and noticed the absence of noise. but a couple of months ago i started being able to hear the fans when i play world of warcraft. since then, they have slowly gotten louder and louder, and they allow my cpu temp to get higher and higher before it stops rising.
before i could hear the fans i never noticed the temp, but after i started hearing them, my cpu temp usually maxed out at around 148º. now it is allowed to get to 167º and stay there while i play wow. and the fans are so loud i have to use headphones to be able to hear the game. simply surfing the internet now causes higher temperatures and fan speeds than playing WoW did a month ago.
should i take it to a service technician to see if anything is wrong with it?

Have you ever cleaned you machine? Since it's an iSight (which is actually 3rd generation, Ambient Light is the 2nd, Rev A the 1st), you can't open it but you can vacuum the air vents, which might help.

  • How to increase fan speed on HP pavilion dv7

i have a major problem with my fans on my pc. It often reaches 80-90 degrees celcuis, when i have been playing a fairly simple game for about 20 minutes. does anyone know what to do? and it dosent seem like i can increase my fan speed in any way. i have been trying almost everything i can find on the internet. please help

Hello themanafreak.  I understand your notebook is getting warm during use.
First, you should ensure that the cooling system of the notebook is free of dust and debris but cleaning the notebook as per these instructions.
Also, another good step to take is to ensure that you have the latest version of the BIOS installed.  I can locate the latest BIOS for you if you provide me with your product number.  This document can show you where the product number is located. Finally, I do not know of a way to increase the fan's speed itself but you can set the fan to "always be on" by doing the following.
Reboot your computer and press F10 until the BIOS loads.Navigate to the System Configuration section.Ensure that "Fan Always On" is set to enabled.Navigate to the Exit section and save your changes.
    Have a great day!

  • Increase fan speed on Intel Core Duo Mac mini?

I have owned a PowerPC G4 based Mac mini for some time now. It's been (and continues to be) a great little computer.
Just recently I bought the Intel Core Duo version. It too seems like a great little computer.
However, I've got to admit that the amount of heat the Intel version puts out is staggering. The internal hard disk claims to be running around 119-126 degrees Fahrenheit. I put a thermometer near the vent on the back and it topped out at 120 degrees F. The bottom pad is nearly too hot to touch. This computer is running a distributed computing project.
Far be it from me to second guess Apple's engineers, but the fan is never turning very fast at all on the Intel mini. It is running, though, and appears to be doing as it was designed to do. (I've seen my PowerPC machine get to rip-roaring during the summer.)
Running the Apple Hardware Test shows that the Intel mini's fan can speed up quite a bit. I'd like to know if there's a way to request a higher fan speed outside of the Hardware Test. I know I could pop the thing open and just "forget" to reconnect the fan speed sensor wire to command the fan to run at full speed, but I don't want to invalidate the warranty.
Maybe I'm being silly, but I prefer that my computers be moving enough air from them to keep things cool regardless of noise level.

The smcFanControl utility is what ended up solving this problem. Turning up the fan speeds just a little bit resulted in a very noticeable cool-down.

  • Fan Speeds While Gaming?

I was just wondering if the fan speeds were normal on my new 27" iMac. When I run portal at max settings my fan runs at about 2200-2500 rpm according to istat. When I'm on the internet it's usually around 1100-1400 rpm. It's not that loud, but I can hear it. I was just wondering if this is normal?  It sounds normal, but I just want to make sure.

If you notice high fan speeds when doing normal computing it doesn't hurt to do a SMC reset.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Increasing Write Speeds while saving files?...

While i love Photoshop, its performance can be a huge concern. Lately, i upgraded my workstation from a 4 year old desktop and went all out...
Here are the specs of the new system.
    2 x X5670 (12 Nehalem 2.93Ghz cores)
    48GB of ECC RAM
3 x 50GB (raid 0 on LSI 5150 sata 3 raid card) Sandforce SSD drives that give me sequential read/write speeds of approx 800MBps.
My issue is that i hate the way photoshop writes data while saving PSD files. I cant seem to see photoshop write to disk at speeds greater than 12-15 MBps. This has become the slowest link in the entire photoshop work flow and is slowing me down considerably.
The other option i was trying to investigate is to edit loads of files and then do an equivalent of a bulk save but i cant find a trick to do that.
    thoughts?

thanks Noel for the speedy response. I will admit that i oversimplified my setup but here is the full info for my setup...
I gave the save as tiff a go but DID see a dramatic increase!!
    C Drive:
T Drive: 40GB Fusion i/o PCI card. Photoshop uses this as the scratch disk (under preferences --> general --> performance).
P.S: my systems temp variables (user and env) etc are all redirected to this drive.
    I have a D Drive (Raid 5 across 6 x 2TB drives that i use purely for storage)
Here is what all i am doing...
    Open a raw nef file,
Use define to reduce noise (automatic profile)
    Use Viveza to adjust brightness/contrast/structure/warmth
    save the file
    These are some timings...
    Loading photoshop --> 4.5 sec
Opening a D7000 16MPix raw image --> 8.5 sec (file opens in camera raw and then i click open to open in photoshop)
    Times to save processed files...
    PSD: 28.5 seconds!!!!
Tiff: 2.5 seconds!!! yes 2.5 seconds (you barely see it save!!)
    You are the man...
i would assume that i have the CPU and RAM horsepower to have photoshop do a good job at the compression while saving but the diffrence is huge!!!
now please tell me what do i lose (if anything) in moving to the Tiff format (preserving all layers)

  • Fan running after playing Halo Demo online, why?

    Hello all,
Late 2008 Macbook Aluminum, sometimes when I play the Halo Demo Online, my fan starts run loud and for an extended period of time post log-off of Halo. Any suggestions?

    Hi, Maczbook
probably it's a processor-intensive application, with a lot of graphics. you can check the CPU usage (use teh "activity-Monitor" in Applications/Utilities), and the temperature (download teh istat widget).
if the cpu/graphics works hard, the temperature goes up, and the fans blow to cool it again.

  • How to increase Fan speed | HP Travelmate 8510p

    Hi everybody,
I post here because I have an issue that last from more than year with the temperature of my CPU. It's always near 50/60 when I'm lucky, and it can go to 90 degree and make the laptop crash when I'm running costly applications (like compiling stuff or playing games).
I would like to force the fan to run faster, like it was when I was running windows on the same laptop, so that the CPU (and also at the same time the keyboard which is burning my fingers) stay cooler.
Here is a sensors I just made :
    DeepThought# sensors
    radeon-pci-0100
    Adapter: PCI adapter
    temp1:        +39.0°C
    coretemp-isa-0000
    Adapter: ISA adapter
    Core 0:       +61.0°C  (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
    Core 1:       +63.0°C  (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
So it's seams the issue is realy the cooling of the CPU.
I tried stuff described here : https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/fan_speed_control but it seams I havent any PWM control on my laptop, or otherwise some drivers are missing :
    DeepThought# pwmconfig
    # pwmconfig revision 6166 (2013-05-01)
This program will search your sensors for pulse width modulation (pwm)
controls, and test each one to see if it controls a fan on
your motherboard. Note that many motherboards do not have pwm
circuitry installed, even if your sensor chip supports pwm.
We will attempt to briefly stop each fan using the pwm controls.
The program will attempt to restore each fan to full speed
after testing. However, it is ** very important ** that you
physically verify that the fans have been to full speed
    after the program has completed.
/usr/bin/pwmconfig: There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed
So if you have any advice, any method to try, I'll be happy to hear about it
    Thanks,

The output is empty (nothing found).
    > - Disassemble the laptop and replace the old thermal pads / thermic paste with new thermic paste. In my experience, this has yielded outstanding results.
I did it and it helped a bit, but doesn't solve the problem, and don't last long.
Pretty strange that I cannot force the fan to run at the highest speed.
    > - Use a scaling governor to prevent the cpu from scaling to it's highest frequency
    I may try that.

  • Extremely high fan speeds while using Skype

I have a MAc book pro intel based, the fan goes on whirling at the hihgest possible speed even when there is about 30% of cpu usage i tried the SMC and the PRAM reset but it hasn't helped me at all.
Does any one ave any idea how to fix this problem?
    Thanks

  • Ridiculous Fan Speed When Playing Games

    Hi all the Mac peoples!
I have a little problem that I need an answer for:
I've got a MacBook, brand-new, 2 GB, 2.4 GHz, running 10.5.5 and whenever I run the game SuperTux (cute little penguin, check it out!), my fan goes wacko (up in the 4000-5000 rpm) and I have to stop everything and wait for it to slow down. I've reset the SMC a gazillion times to try to solve the problem, but it isn't really working.
If anyone has any answers, I could use one!
    Thank you!
    Love Always,
    MacDarling55

Doesn't sound like there's a problem. The fans kick in when the CPU and GPU are under load, such as when playing a game, to dissipate the heat being generated.

  • Increased fan speed after Leopard install

Hey - Just installed leopard today on my intel core 2 duo blackbook, and I have noticed that where under no processor load my fans would run at about 1800 RPM. Now, it has been consistently at about 2600. I have reset the SMC (I think that's what it's called, the PMU on PowerPC systems) and updated to 10.5.1. Has anyone else experienced this??
    Thanks,
    Dave

Spotlight may still be indexing the hard drive.
