Increased menu bar size for the vision impared

My mother needs a new computer, and I was thinking of getting her the 24" iMac. Her vision is failing, and I was wanting to increase the size of icons and menus to help her see them better.
I can't seem to find a way to increase the size of the menu bar or any of the application controls (she is a big MSOffice user).
I know I can decrease the screen resolution, but this looks terrible on an LCD screen. Also, the magnification feature is nice, but considering that a 24" screen is available, just enlarging everything leaves enough room to work.
Can anyone help?
Thanks.

Unfortunately, few will answer, and the answer would be a resounding "no".
I just went to a "Genius Bar" appointment and asked, because I basically had the same problem: I went to buy a 13" MacBook for my aunt and uncle - in their mid-70s - and I specifically asked about that issue, only to be told that I could indeed change the menu fonts and their sizes.
Turns out I can't and I now have two rather unhappy relatives who spent twice on their Mac laptop than they'd have on a PC crap one, but where the menus would have been fine for them to read after I'd made a few interface changes.
To add insult to injury, the "Genius" (and Lord, how those quotes are necessary!) came up with the solution to install Windows on the MacBook and run that instead. He's really lucky I did not have the 13" at hand otherwise I'd have force-fed the thing to him. I did NOT spend all that money, plus two days trying to find a solution, only to get that sort of crapola offered as an answer.
Anyhow.
From what I've surmised, Apple has not thought it useful enough to allow mere mortals to decide what's best for us and trust us with choosing fonts and sizes we like - or need.
I've been looking about, and so far only two (partial) solutions have come up:
1) Changing the scaling factor, a not-totally documented possibility that can be accessed after downloading OSX developers tools... See here: http://guides.macrumors.com/Changingthe_effective_screenresolution
I haven't tested this yet on my own PB, as my battery ran out while downloading but I will try it again later.
2) Doing the same thing, but through a shareware application called TinkerTool System (http://www.bresink.de/osx/TinkerToolSys.html) which allows you to change the pixel density factor. I downloaded the app (there's a free, fully-funtioning, 5-run download available) and it works as promised... as long as the applications you use are made to work with this "developer-only" feature of 10.5 - for instance, Firefox clearly isn't.
But still, I was impressed in that the menu bar items looked quite all right (the clock and other menu bar icons did not scale, and looked odd) and that, for the apps that did scale well (iTunes, Opera, Safari, Finder) the results were visually pleasing, and very legible.
I would suggest you download it and try it for free on your Mum's computer - a scale factor of 1.25 looked all right to me, but you can go higher I guess. Just make sure that while your factor is set, you open each and every application she's liable to use and see if they do scale well. If they do, TTS is about $10 and that would be money well spent. I am going to try it on my folks' MB and I hope that'll do the trick...
...until Apple decides that there is a good reason after all behind "Windoze"'s user-tweaked UI possibilities after all
Let me know if it worked for you and best,
Ludovic

  • Increase Menu Font sizes for Premier CC 2014 with 4K Monitor

I have just purchased an 4K monitor, but the menu fonts are to small to read.  In Illustrator CC 2014, there is an option to increase them by 200%, which is perfect, but Premier doesn't seem to offer that.  Is there a solution?

Thanks for you answer. Do you you know, when 8.1 will be released?
It is soon to be released according to Adobe. Probably a matter of weeks so hang in there.

It would depend on your definition of "Fix"
Your iPod touch running OS 4.2 has a ZOOM feature which will enable you to see the screen more clearly.
To turn Zoom on or off got to:
Settings > General > Accessibility > Zoom and tap the Zoom On/Off switch.
    _To Zoom in or out_:
Double-tap the screen with three fingers. By default, the screen is magnified 200 percent. If you manually change the magnification (by using the tap-and-drag gesture, described below), iPod touch automatically returns to that magnification when you zoom in by double-tapping with three fingers.
Increase magnification: With three fingers, tap and drag toward the top of the screen (to increase magnification) or toward the bottom of the screen (to decrease magnification). The tap-and-drag gesture is similar to a double-tap, except you don’t lift your fingers on the second tap—instead, drag your fingers on the screen. Once you start dragging, you can drag with a single finger.
    _Move around the screen_:
When zoomed in, drag or flick the screen with three fingers. Once you start dragging, you can drag with a single finger so that you can see more of the screen. Hold a single finger near the edge of the display to pan to that side of the screen image. Move your finger closer to the edge to pan more quickly. When you open a new screen, Zoom always goes to the top-middle of the screen.
    _Large Text_:
Large Text lets you make the text larger in alerts, and in Calendar, Contacts, Mail, Messages, and Notes. You can choose 20-point, 24-point, 32-point, 40-point, 48-point, or 56-point text.
Set the text size: In Settings, choose General > Accessibility, tap Large Text, then tap the text size you want.
I hope this has helped a little - other than this option I think it pretty much is what it is.
BTW - This information can be found on page 208 of the iPod Touch iOS 4.2 Users Guide.
    Best wishes..

You can't. It's now integrated with the URL bar. It's a search/URL combo.

  • How do I increase system font size (for menus, etc.)?

I wear contacts, but still don't have perfect vision, and working on my mac all day as a researcher means that my eyes can get tired- especially since I work on double screens- my macbook air + a widescreen display on my desk. There are a lot of accessibility options in Yosemite, but I cannot see an option to simply increase the menu/system font size. It seems ridiculous that one can easily increase fonts in safari or other programs with a pinch-out motion, but there are NO possibilities for making menus and system text--which users have to decipher across their day and tasks--more legible. (I could never find this option in Mavericks either, but am surprised not to see it added in Yosemite, with all the smart, beautiful aesthetic changes).
So, how can I increase menu font size?
    Many thanks in advance!
    Emily

  • Adobe premiere elements 12 - how to create menu bar action for my inserted image button

adobe premiere elements 12 - how to create menu bar action for my inserted image button without using their movie menu theme

    forbemag
I do not think that I am completely focused into this completely, so let us see if the following is going to help.
You are going to need a base for your button. When you mention "image" button, I am assuming that you are using that term to differentiate between a text button and a thumbnail type button.
The menus (main and scene) take their origin in .psd files on the hard drive and strict nomenclature and structure for Layers Palatte. And, the buttons on the menus trace back to the menu markers on the Timeline, main menu marker and order of placement of scene markers. The scene thumbnail will only appear when there is a scene marker on the Timeline to which it.
    In view of all that
Where have you already inserted this "image (button)"...into the Layers Palette of a Photoshop document or other? Is this "image (button)" in a structured Layer Group in the Layers Palette with sublayer groups, text layers, graphic/background layer"?
Let me give you an example
If you have a button (with thumbnail) on the main menu and you want that to open to a specific scene in your movie, then you use a main menu marker on the Timeline at the spot that you want that button to target.
If I am getting closer to what you seek, then please further clarify the DVD navigational envisioned scheme.
    Thanks.

  • I have dual displays.  My dock is on the MBP bottom and the menu bar is on the extended monitors top.

I have a Dell 2408 acting as the main display and a 15" MBP.  For some reason, today the dock ended up on the MBP screen at the bottom and the menu bar is on the Dell at the top.  I can't seem to move the dock back to the Dell.  Can someone help?  I tried moving the menu bar to the MBP and then back, hoping the dock would follow but no luck.
    Thanks for your help.

When the dock is defined as on the bottom, it will appear on the screen of the extended desktop that is lowest.
Move the second monitor where the bottom edges are equal or the Dell is lower and the dock will move there.

  • Showing the Date (month & day) in the Menu Bar, Not just the Day of the Wee

Since upgrading to 10.5 from 10.4, I've noticed that the menu bar no longer shows the date (month and day, it just shows the day of the week.
Is there a way to get the menu bar to show the month and day again as it did in 10.4?

Tiger had to be changed in the same way as Leopard.
Start by opening the International Preferences panel, and clicking the Formats tab.
In the Dates section, click Customize. Click the Show pop-up and select your choice of Short, Medium, etc. Now place the elements you want in the small "work area," by dragging and dropping them from the Date Elements section. Once placed, you can click on some elements to see other options (Wednesday or Wed, for instance). Once you've built the date string you want, click once in the work area, and hit Command-A then Command-C to select the string and copy it. Now click Cancel to close the window without making any changes.
In the Times section, click Customize, and set the Show pop-up to Medium. In the small work area below the pop-up, place the curser where you want the date elements to start, and click to position the cursor. Now hit Command-V to paste the elements you just copied. You can further add characters and spaces to customize the look. If you want to remove an element (i.e. the year), click on it and use the Delete key. Click OK, and you'll see the results in the menubar.

Here are two "Menu" add-ons which alter the Menu bar into one button.
With this one you can move the new "Menu" button into the Customize Palette, and then when you hit the '''Alt''' key the "Menu will open down from the Titlebar on the left. Won't affect the action of the Firefox button when you de-select the Menu Bar.<br />

  • Menu Bar: Re-ordering the icons

I have a lot of Apps which I access via the menu bar. But the order of the little icons is, well, not very ordered!
They seem to be in the order I installed the respective Apps. So, running from the right hand side:
Spotlight, Clock, Languages, Volume, Airport, Bluetooth, Time Machine, Spaces, then my non-generic downloaded programs.
How do I move these icons around, re-order them so to speak? Or is there another little app to do this?
    Cheers.

If you look in System/Library/CoreServices you will see a folder called 'Menu Extras' and contains all the menu icons that come with OS X...
There are some pretty useful ones that are hard to find normally, for example 'Eject' puts an Eject icon on your Menu Bar, there are others as well.

  • Set global font size for the whole application.

Is there a way of setting a font globally

After posting over 300 questions I would think you would be passed the "New to Java TechnologY" stage.
The answer for Swing applications is yes this can be done.
I don't know how to do it for AWT components.
Since you posted the question in this forum (as oppose to the Swing forum for Swing related problems), I'm assuming this is an AWT related question and therefore I can't help you.

Hi there, I've been trying to deploy one of my AIR apps on the BlackBerry Tablet (PlayBook) Simulator and and have run into a problem packaging the .bar file using the command line.  I started this off by reading the article at:
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/devices/articles/blackberry_playbook_battery.html
I followed some of the steps there, but found this article on how to package my files using a command line more helpful (the Adobe article doesn't even explain how to package the .bar file using the command line):

Has anyone run into this issue when trying to package a .bar file for the BlackBerry Tablet (Playbook) Simulator?  I've tried using a SWF published in CS5 and CS4.

Just thought I'd reply to my own post, in case someone else runs into this problem.  Make sure you have the latest and greatest versions of the JDK and JRE installed on your system, in addition to the requirements listed in BlackBerry's list of installs:
