Increased shutdown time?

Hello, I have a MBP 15" i7 and I have noticed it has been taking a little longer to shutdown. It use to take 2-3 seconds, but now it takes just less than 10 seconds to shutdown. Right now I have Parallels Desktop installed to run Windows 7. I have read online that this might be what's increasing the shutdown time. What do you guys think?

Longer compared to what before? The more software that is up and running, then I would suspect the longer the shutdown process ParallelsDesktop included.

    Hi,
    I have a mac book pro (Retina) and suddenly the shutdown time has been increased. Whats the problem??
    1st it use to shutdown in 2-4 sec but now it takes more than 30-40 sec & sometime even more than tht!!!
    How can i resolve this issue??
    Thanks
    Amar

    I have exactly the same issue with both my late 2011 Macbook Pro with SSD and my new 11" Macbook Air since upgrading to Mountain Lion. Takes around 30secs to shutdown whereas previously 2 second shutdown - very frustrating when using the machines on the move and in a hurry which was one reason I chose SSD drives in the first place.

  • Shutdown time has increased drastically !! Please Help !!

    I purchased a new mid 2012 macbook air recently...
    I dont know why after a month's use my shutdown time has changed from 1-2 secs to 10-15 seconds !!
    I am very disappointed for this. Please anyone help.....

    My mistake for the accidental slip with 10.8.3, been working with a bunch of Lion machines in the shop lately and they were all running 10.7.3. That being said, I don't even think 10.8.3 is available on the Developer portal, yet. No more mention of that, though, otherwise the forum police will bear on this thread with the wrath of the strength of 10,000 retirees.
    The issue exists in 10.8.1 as well from my experience. Our fleet of 13" Retina MacBook Pros exhibit the same issue that the OP is reporting (15-30 second shut down sequences). None of them run 10.8.2 because the update rendered the machines unusable, it's also why (I suspect) that Apple pulled the 10.8.2 for those machines. Personally I've noticed it on all the machines since the upgrade to Mt. Lion, it's just not that obvious on the MacBook Air due to the SSD (I suspect).
    Personally I'm curious to know what is that's happening in the background, the OS (at that point) has been secured and shut down. The only thing I've been able to correlate is that the more inactive RAM I had allocated at the time of shut down the more time it takes to shut down. I shut down all of my programs before shutting down the machine so my wired RAM is usually sub 1 GB (on 8 GB of RAM). Perhaps Mt. Lion is doing something with that RAM, a secure wipe or some other system level task.
    It's definitely a "feature" of Mt. Lion, though. Of the multiple machines I've tested that can run Lion and Mt. Lion the issue only occurs in Mt. Lion (dual boot).

  • Increase in shutdown time after enabling TRIM

    Hi,
    I'm using mid 2012 macbook pro 13" & recently replaced the original hard drive with Corsair Neutron GTX 120GB. After replacing the HDD I freshly installed Mountain Lion. The performance benefits were conspicuous just as any one would expect. Faster boot/shutdown times (~12s/~4s), no jumping apps etc.
    TRIM support for SSD was not enabled until I used this app called Trim Enabler (http://www.groths.org/trim-enabler/). A subsequent reboot enabled TRIM (as you can see below).
    The weird thing I observed after using Trim Enabler is, shutdown now takes around 20+ seconds. I'm not sure if this due to some clearing activity through TRIM commands issued by OS X (considering TRIM was not active initially) or anything else.
    NOTE: I don't see any visible performance impact other than the higher shutdown times.

    I'm not sure what actually caused the slower shutdowns, but now ther's no issue at all
    Possibility 1:
    The local copies made by Time Machine to SSD (when backup disk is disconnected)
    Possibility 2:
    Considering there were few writes to my SSD earlier without TRIM, after enabling TRIM OSX took some time to get the SSD to optimal performance (may be few background copy/erase operations, I don't know for sure)
    Now that I've switched to manual time machine backup (turning it ON only when the backup disk connected & turn OFF once done) the reboot time is back to blazing 2-3 seconds.
    BTW those who still want to keep backup running automatically & don't want to keep local snapshots on SSD, should disable it using "$sudo tmutil disablelocal" (there's no GUI way of doing this). With SSD there's a good reason to disable local snaps by Time Machine; space, life, performance etc.

  • 15" Retina MacBook Pro increase in shutdown times...

    I just reacently got my rMBP about 1 1/2 ago. It used to shut down EXTREMLY fast. However, over time the shutdowns seem to get longer and longer. From no spin wheel, to a 2-3 second spinwheel and now it has to be around 20-30 seconds before the screen will go completly black. I've read things such as removing "Login items" and the items I had in there were "itunes helper, smcfancontrol, and gfxcardstatus" there all gone now but it seems to not have effected the shutdown times at all. Also, the shutdown times seemed to have stayed the same (no spinning wheel) and it boots right in. However no matter how long the rMBP has been on, it will take this long time to shutdown. Anything else I can do to get this issue resolved?
    Thanks,
    Aaron

  • Problem: shutdown time proportional to runtime

    Hello Experts,
    I am developing a fairly large application using multiple queued state-machines as the fundamental architecture.
    I have noticed that the shutdown time of the application, i.e. in the IDE after the final VI terminates there is a noticeable delay before the VI returns to edit mode.
    The odd thing is that it is proportional to the length of time the main VI has been running.
    My first thoughts were an unbounded array growing (and then being released) but the memory usage of the application is rock solid.
    Then I thought, it could be a reference opened somewhere and not closed, but I am not really doing this at all in my application. I am using control references a lot, but you dont need to manually close these do you?
    I cannot think of anything else which would be "building up" inside the application as it runs. All the queues are sensible sizes, and the final VI actually closes in good time, its the delay after this that is troubling me...
    I do not have any custom DLLs in the application, and only one activeX control (which I am going to try and disable now to see if this helps)
    Any ideas?

    Hi Rob, thanks for your suggestions.
    I eventually sussed it though, in a place I would not have expected...
    I coded a routine to defer front panel updates when doing lots of graphical changes. The VI takes a control reference as an input (any control on the front panel to be deferred) and from this it determines the owning VI and from this it can get a reference to the panel. It seems that these references never get closed, and as I was calling this function many times it was creating new (and different) references to the panel each time. The memory usage increased ever so slightly over time (I had not noticed this before).
    When the app finally closed I suppose all these references got cleaned up, and this was what was taking a proportional length of time.
    The solution was to use a more sophisticated routine (not terribly clever though) that only derives the reference once, and then stores it in a feedback node for each other time the VI is called.

  • MacBook Pro shutdown time

    Recently I've noticed the shutdown time has increased from "very quick" (under 5 seconds) to "slower" (around 30 seconds). How can I return to "very quick"?

    Close all windows, quit all apps. Lion's default behavior is to restore the desktop upon return, hence the more stuff on it, the longer it will take to store the current state.

  • How to increase the time at the end of what aaa requeries the authentication of a client web

    Hi All,
    I configure ASA aaa to authentificate our internal web client to access to internet. It's check the username/password of client in our Active Directory.
    When the client initiate the first connexion, the ASA request the login connexion and when it's correct, it authorise the access. But after 10 min for exemple, it's request again the login, and so one and so one. Approximativelly, after each ten minute, it requeste an username/password.
    I want to know how can i increase the time between two authentifcation. Or increase the time of 10 min.
    Thanks.

    The authentication timeout is configurable via the "timeout uauth" command, and you can set either absolute or inactivity timeout.
    Here is the command for your reference:

  • Boot and shutdown time is much slower

    Running a MB Pro with 4gb of RAM. The boot and shutdown times are considerably slower. Any ideas?

    Do you have the machine set to auto-login? Or does it boot to the login window? If it is set to auto-login, how long does the machine take to get to the blue screen? How much longer does it take to get from the blue screen to active desktop?
    How long does it take to shut down? What applications are running when you shut down the machine?

    I looked in the NQSConfig.ini file for you. In here you find the following:
    [ CACHE ]
    ENABLE     =     YES;
    // A comma separated list of <directory maxSize> pair(s)
    // e.g. DATA_STORAGE_PATHS = "d:\OracleBIData\nQSCache" 500 MB;
    DATA_STORAGE_PATHS     =     "/oracle/oaobi01/data/ontwbif1013/OracleBIdata/cache" 500 MB;
    MAX_ROWS_PER_CACHE_ENTRY = 100000; // 0 is unlimited size
    MAX_CACHE_ENTRY_SIZE = 1 MB;
    MAX_CACHE_ENTRIES = 1000;
    I think you can do something with this...
    You can find the nqsconfig.ini in this directory:<Install Drive>\OracleBI\server\Config
    Otherwise have a look in the Server Administration Guide, chapter 11

  • Sql memory usage increase each time win app runs

    Hi,
    Sql memory usage increases each time when win app runs. Why does it work like this? Is it normal ?
    I restart SQL Server 2012. Only my win app uses SQL server.
    First run of winapp.
    start memory usage : 211.800 KB
    close memory usage: 528.136 KB
    Second run of xaf app.
    start memory usage : 528.136 KB
    close memory usage: 996.844 KB
    Third run of xaf app
    start memory usage : 996.844 KB
    close memory usage: 997.640 KB
    Fourth run of xaf app
    start memory usage : 997.640 KB
    close memory usage: 1.104.864 KB

    Hi,
    Sql memory usage increases each time when win app runs. Why does it work like this? Is it normal ?
    Yes, it is perfectly normal for SQL Server to acquire and hold onto large amounts of memory indefinitely.  This memory improves performance by avoiding disk I/O, query plan compilation and costly memory management.
    On a dedicated SQL Server you should usually let SQL Server dynamically manage memory.  It will release memory if it detects memory pressure.  But if you often run other applications on the server than need significant amounts of memory (e.g. IIS,
    application services), you may want to set max server memory as suggested.

    If the OP is asking about the notifications generated by the new
    Notifications Center feature then the above won't do any good. The above
    setting only impacts the old style notifications generated by applications
    that have icons in the system tray area of the task bar.

  • I'm using ios5 in iphone4, but the 'other' capacity in itunes is keeping increasing every time after sync iphone4 from PC

    I'm using ios5 in iphone4, but the 'other' capacity in itunes is keeping increasing every time after sync the iphone4 from PC, now the 'orther' usage is 0.64G.

    You are of course deleting the tunes from within the iTunes interface.
    The settings that I am referring to are your device settings for the iPad. It should show in the left column of iTunes when your iPad is plugged in.
    Go through your playlists and make sure that the tunes(s) are removed from any playlist. You can prevent the sync as noted above then do a sync and the iPad should update with the content from you Mac.

  • Why does PDF file size increase each time I "save" tagging tasks?

    Why does PDF file size increase each time I "save" tagging tasks?
    Given:
    1) I'm running Acrobat Pro 11.0.07 (this is most current version)
    2) My file size starts at 750mb and ends up 15mb when finished tagging.
    3) Only certain documents experience this increase, i.e., no visible pattern of document characteristics
    4) PDF's are not full of images...in fact, mostly <H1> <H2> <H3> <P> <Figure> alt text, ect.
    5) Occurs with text PDF's and/or fillable forms (again, does not happen to all documents...only some)
    6) File increase occurs incrementally as tagging tasks are performed; i.e., each new save increases file size a few megabytes.
    7) Occurs whether I "save" or "save as"
    8) Difficult to optimize these files without corruption
    9) I'm running Mac OS 10.9.4 (this is most current version)

    Thank you so much for responding! I've been experimenting with the SAVE AS vs. SAVE for the past few days...and you are correct. It's funny because I've been tagging files for 2 years and never noticed this. Probably b/c I use both methods depending on the tagging tasks...some are more complicated than others and should not be overwritten. In those cases I SAVE AS new file.
    I love this forum...thank you again!
