Increasing Available Memory

Is it possible to increase available memory in Appleworks so it can open larger files, such as templates?

Welcome to Apple Discussions, Doug!
OS X manages memory for you, there is no way to change the memory setting on your own. Adding memory to your machine, or closing some other programs while you are running AW will give the OS more to work with. How much memory do you have? What problems are you having when opening templates?

  • [SOLVED] tomcat6, jre6, trying to increase available memory

I'm attempting to install a copy of JIRA on Archlinux and have been encountering OutOfMemory exception. Per JIRA's docs, I created the file 'setenv.sh' and placed it in /usr/share/tomcat6/bin/, with the following contents:
    export CATALINA_OPTS="$CATALINA_OPTS -Dorg.apache.jasper.runtime.BodyContentImpl.LIMIT_BUFFER=true -Dmail.mime.decodeparameters=true -Xms256m -Xmx1024m -XX:MaxPermSize=512m"
I also tried placing the above line in /usr/share/tomcat6/bin/catalina.sh, per information I found on another site. In catalina.sh I also tried:
    export JAVA_OPTS="-Djava.awt.headless=true -server -Xms256m -Xmx1024m -XX:MaxPermSize=512m"
None of these worked. I am basing "worked" off the assumption that if they did, the line in catalina.out that mentions "Maximum Allowable Memory" would change from its apparent default (247MB) to one of the values I chose.
I've never used tomcat before, so hopefully I just have the settings in the wrong configuration file. As the title says, using tomcat6, jre6 (from AUR).
    EDIT:
I've tried a bunch of minor things to no avail; removed the 'export' statement and tried both in setenv.sh; same thing in catalina.sh. No effect. Still showing 247MB max, and "Total Memory : 15MB". No luck at all.

It was in /etc/conf.d/tomcat6. I hate myself.

  • Are there any INI or other files I can modify to increase available memory?

I have a new CPU (Intel I7 - 950 with 8GB of memory) and I'm running Elements 9.0.  I have a slide show that is just under 20 minutes long and I'm trying to create a WMV file with the highest resolution.  The create output starts and gets to about 58% and stops.  It never creates a file.  I go the lessor resolution and it works.  Are there any INI file parameters or other file attributes I can tweak to give the application more resources so I can produce a WMV slide show?  I used to create 40-50 minute slide shows with an older version of the software without any problems, it just took a while to run.  I cannot believe I don't have enough resources to get this created, but I don't know what I need to do.
I have the same problem with smaller slideshows.  I have to restart my system, open Elements and run the slideshow build just to get a 9 minute show produced at the max resolution.  It will NEVER work if I try to do ANYTHING else first.  This is really getting annoying...  Any suggestions - besides using a lower resolution or getting verion 10?
    Thanks...

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself independently backed up against loss.  To use a device with a new computer you transfer the content from the old computer (or its backup) directly to the new computer, not the device to the new computer. Media syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only purchases from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software.  See this document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991

  • IPhone 4 - deleted images, after got low memory error msg rcvd, but available memory has not increased!!

I have an iPhone 4 16GB. Was recording a video the other day, and got this msg: "Warning: You are running out of disk space. Please delete some photos or videos". Ok, so I had like 5,000+ images in my "camera roll", don't have any other folders. ALOT were from the Internet, when I would hold down on an image, and pick "save image". So, using common sense, I went into camera, under camera roll, then hit arrow icon in bottom left corner, and proceeded to check mark images. Once I had a group, I'd hit delete. I did this several times, until I was left with only about 1/2 the amount of images, which was about 3,000. I rebooted my iphone. I then went into settings> general> about, and looked under available, which still showed only about 100MB available out of 14GB. How is this possible? Now, when I go into camera, the lense won't even open, and I keep getting the same error msg. Maybe 3,000 is still alot, but remember, I had almost 6,000 images before, with NO problems till just a few days ago. So, how do I get my iPhone available memory back, if already deleted images, as instructed???

You need to connect the iPhone to the computer and import those photos to the computer. Photos are not really supposed to be stored in the camera roll as it can cause problems, as you have already seen. Also, should the iPhone crash, you could lose all of the photos without having a backup of them. Once you have downloaded all the pictures, you should be able to go into Explorer and delete everything out of that folder. Then reset the iPhone and it should clear the memory. The iPhone is probably holding the memory because the Library hasn't updated. A sync would help as it tends to reset things. I've read of other issues with keeping too many photos in the camera roll and issues with saving from the Internet as well, however much of that was in earlier versions of iOS. I believe that has been corrected.
Once you have imported the photos and deleted them from the camera roll, you can sync them back through iTunes in the Photos tab if you want them on the phone.

  • Will Installing more RAM improve performance, IF laptop has "available memory" not being used?

My laptop has 2x 1GB of RAM.
Right now, and usually, The Physical Memory shown in Task Manager, shows that there is "available memory" (currently it's 500megs worth). (And "system cache" says 300megs.)
There is also, right now, 2.5GB of page filing being used.
If I were to replace the 2GB of RAM with 4GB (of the same Mhz), would there be a noticable increase in performance?
    (windows XP 32bit OS)

A matched set of DDR2 ram will perform a lot faster one memory not matched. Its required for the double data rate to work. Hence 2+2 is the max you'd need/want in a 32bit machine. Windows 7 was built for large memory footprints. XP was built to run just barely in 64MB but really needed a min of 128MB to support a network connection and printing. It was never enable to truely go a whole lot further than a few machines built capable of 1GB. There was even a bug which was patch causing problems if a !GB or more was available. Just because it can see it does not mean it actually uses it !! The kernal by default is swapped in/out of ram even in larger memory systems. Why, it was is not aware of the extra memory and does not change its behavour from a 512MB machine.
As for the 1333Mhz ram the timing may be faster than the other memory used. Hence it flow the data faster on the bus. Fewer delays in various cycles including the RAS/CAS etc but thats all under the hood so to speak.

  • I've not found the option to increase shared memory of intel hd graphics card in BIOS

Hi! I don't find that option. I have the 2.08 version, but the 3.01 is out there. The graphics performance is not very well now. Is there a way to increase this memory to 256 mb or more? Thanks in advance

    hi freinn,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
This is on Auto by default.
The amount of memory shared to your graphics is dependent on how much RAM you have. Also even if you max out the RAM capacity there will no big jump on the shared memory just few MBs will be added
The Manual is not available even if there is an updated BIOS.
Even if a Manual option is available still you can only share the same maximum as the one on Auto. Not a big jump.
i hate to say it but that's how it will be
    Hope this helps
    Cheers!

I want to increase my memory for oracle because i need to insert 31 billion rows into a table with nologging. I am inserting them chunk by chunk and commit after each chunk. But it is taking 62 hours to insert the rows. So i think if i increase the memory i could reduce the time to insert the rows.
I really am not sure whether i am thinking in the right way. Please advise. If i want to increase the memory please let me know how to increase it.
    Thanks in advance

  • Impdp and available memory

Just a quick one on how available memory can affect datapump imp.
Will increasing the SGA from 2GB to 8GB of a database on which data is being imported affect the total import time?
    Just a bit curious!
    Thanks

    Hi,
What is the method of the Import Method. Whether it is External Path or Direct Path. If it is Direct Path it will not use buffer cache, it will directly insert after the HWM. If it is External Path it will use the SGA. I dont find a point to increase the size of SGA for the import process alone. If you have a luxury of having 8GB instance for import process you can have it for the normal databse operations too. Rather you can do the import process on the less peak time or you need to address the below questions to increase the size of SGA for this process
    1) how much data are you going to insert?
    2) how many users are going to be connected to the Oracle database when import is going to happen?
    3) how big is your improting data and how it wll affect the performance
You can go for direct path insert which will be faster than the external path
    Thanks,
    Vijay

  • How to increase "available space"

Hello.  I'm on my first Mac and have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and want to upgrade to Mtn. Lion.  It says that it requires 2GB of memory, which I have, and 8GB of "available space."  I have 6GB.  Does Apple have a snappy way to increase "available space" that does not require opening the computer up?  Thank you.

    iStuckagain wrote:
Thank you all for your help.  Your answers made me cringe, and since I was cringing so much that I decided to go back and look at the numbers and I have to apologize: I gave the wrong number for disk space.  (Feeling like a dork right about now.)
My computer comes with two 2GB (banks) of DDR3 memory, so the memory is 4GB.  I got some help learning about and locating the Applications>Utilities>Activity Monitor>System Memory section and found that I have 1.82 GB free, 641MB wired, 1.42GB active, 139.7MB inactive, and 2.18 GB used.  Adding free and used gives 4GB total memory, and so I think I do have just under 2GB free.  I will check out both places you listed, Eric Root, and I will get, as you suggested, Csound1, as much RAM as my computer permits.
And regarding "disk space," I don't have 6GB, I have 640GB!  I looked a few tabs over and found that my disk usage is 333.92GB utilized and 305.87GB free, so it looks like I have 640GB (650, but 640 useable?) of disk space in total and that just over half is being used.
I'm sorry for the poor researching in my original post, but I'm pretty new to the inner workings of computers.  That's just where I am right now.  It appears that the memory I thought I had enough of, I need more of, and the disk space I thought I was out of, I have plenty of!  Jeez.  Anyway, I appreciate the help from all of you and I will take care of that RAM problem pronto   .
    You're welcome

  • You need 3.54 GB of available space to download Mac OS X 10.7. Remove items from your startup disk to increase available space.

i recently upgraded my memory to 2gb to support download of lion. i am now receiving this message when i try to download lion:
You need 3.54 GB of available space to download Mac OS X 10.7. Remove items from your startup disk to increase available space.

    Hi, Rick.
Your MacBook's hard drive is too full to accommodate Lion. How big is your hard drive, and how much space remains available on it?
It sounds as if you may be confusing RAM with hard drive space.
Check out this article on the subject:
    http://www.ehow.com/about_5452977_computer-memory-vs-storage.html
It is generally recommended to keep a minimum of 15% of the total capacity of your hard drive as available space for smooth operation of your Mac.

    • To make more memory available, close workbooks or programs you no longer need.
    • To free disk space, delete files you no longer need from the disk you are saving to.
The disk space is 30 GB free, I have cleared all the temp files, increased the virtual memory & internet temp files size to max but no luck

You want to use this one here - MMC
    comexp.msc /32
THAT will launch the MMC process
as 32 bit then you'll the Microsoft Excel Application.
    Right Click -> Properties.
What I did at this point was to select the Identity tab and then select "The Interactive User" (the default was "The launching user").  My app pool was already running as "LocalSystem".  I believe by running it as the Interactive User now that it
has the right permissions to save workbooks.
    Everything worked after this.
    This was a tough one!

Essentially what we are trying to do is the following.
we have different kinds of objects in our baseline. Objects of type CAO, Exposures, Limits that change everyday after close of business day.
We wanted to push these different objects in to respective named regions in the cache.
    Region Name     Objects
    CAO                   ienumerable<caos>
    Exposures           ienumerable<exposures>
    Limits                ienumerable<limits>
we have a producer that pushes this data in to the cache and consumers of this data acting on the data when its available.
Now the issue we are facing is when we try to push around 4000 cao objects (roughly in the size of 300MB when serialized using xml) ,we are getting the above error. Increasing the size on the client and cache cluster didnt help.
The other alternative we were thinking about is chunking and pushing because appfabric doesnt support streaming. We might be able to push this data successfuly if we chunk. But how about the consumers ? wouldnt they face the same memory issue when we use
    getallobjectsinregion ?
We thought if there was a way to figure out the keys in the region then probably the consumers can get one by one. However there is no such API.
The only option i see is using Appfabric notifications which msdn says isnt a reliable way.
    Please help.

  • Sap server uses PF usage and not taking up the available memory

    good day basis experts,
I have 16BG of total physical memory on my server. I set parameter phys_memsize to 8192 to allot the rest for my database. but it seems the server eats up PF usage instead. It eats up upto 18.3 BG and I still have 11GB available memory. I wanted my server to consume the available memory instead of PF usage. How can I do that? Should I increase phys_memsize parameter?
I know I should try this for me to know the ans but the issue is on our PRD so i cant just do resets.
    Thank you for your help

    Hi,
but it seems the server eats up PF usage instead. It eats up upto 18.3 BG and I still have 11GB available memory.
That's the way the SAP memory management system is designed. This behaviour is perfectly normal.
At start up a lot of shared memory is allocated directly in the PF.
By the way, in my opinion you have allocated too much memory for the DB and not enough for SAP.
On a 16Gb server, I usually allocate 4 GB for the database (PHYS_MEMSIZE = 11 GB) at the beginning. Then I tune the system depending from its use and load.

  • Increasing Heap Memory

How do I do to increase the memory available to the JVM? I have an AVLTree class that I am trying to test how many nodes can hold, but even though I have tried on PCs ranging from 128MB to 2GB of RAM, the results is always the same: + - 2.3 million nodes. I have used -x option to increase heap size but that does not seem to work.

    Hi,
I encounter the same problem with using 1G RAM & JRE 1.5 & running applet in IE.
The IE memory usage always run on maximum 139000K. Even I tried "java -Xms64m -Xmx512m" & "java -Xms256m -Xmx768m", the memory usage still in 139000K, and Java console shows "Exception in thread 'AWT-EventQueue-2' java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space". How can I solve it?
    Thanks.

  • What affects available memory/how do I recover it?

What things affect my computer's available memory, and more importantly, how do I recover memory that HAS been used and is logically no longer being used?
When I opened Google Earth, my "Available" (as displayed in the "Macintosh HD Info" window) went from roughly 1.3 GB to 613.2 MB...and long after I closed it, it's still down to 613.2 MB. Does memory work such that it becomes available when the memory-hogging program is closed, or is it different? I had a similar pair of incidents last week; I used LimeWire once and when I quit, the available memory increased, but the second time I opened it, used it, and quit it, the available memory remained low.
I do have an external hard drive that I use mainly for pictures, but I'm having a hard time easily finding all the other things that take up gigabytes on my 55.89-gig internal hard drive. Is there a program that lists every single entity on my computer by size, so I can go through it and delete the big stuff I don't use?

You'll need to free up enugh space using cosmichobo's tip first before you can safely download and run Whatsize to help you find and remove enough unnecessary files to keep at least 5 GB free on the boot drive. It goes without saying, don't delete anything you're not certain of! Files in the /Users path are generally safe to trash; anything in the /System, /Library, /private, or other operating system paths should only be trashed if you're certain it's an unnecessary temp or scratch file.
As for why free hard drive space dropped when you opened Google Earth, the program likely needed more RAM than was available and so created a new swap file in /private/var/vm (swap files should be cleared when the computer restarts).
