Increasing battery life by reducing processor speed.

Is it possible for me to limit the amount of power that goes into the processor? i have tried using speedit and coreduotemp but i can't get them to work.
You see i mostly use my laptop to play music out loud whilst i'm at work, and i'm sure i could get a much better life out of it. I remember i got about 6 hours on my ibook g4 1ghz, and my macbook pro is 2.4ghz and getting 4 hours at most, and runs rather hot. i use the fancontrol system preference application to reduce the fan speed when i want more life and increase it when actually use it.
can anyone help me out?

Running Windows will completely disable any processor control and there are no fan control programs that operate in Windows and work with a Mac. That wouldn't be a feasible solution.
I'm not aware of Windows having a built-in mechanism allowing the user to reduce processor voltage. Windows does use processor stepping to reduce the clock speed under certain usage conditions, but so does OS X.

Does anyone know of a way to limit the processor speed to increase battery life while on battery? I know of some windows utilities that will allow you to scale back the processor, to say, 1 ghz or so, so as to get better battery life. Is there any way to do this with a macbook?
    Thanks,

Try CoolBook Controller out. It should do what you want.

  • How to increase battery life, and how this could be automated by Apple

This is something I submitted to iPhone feedback via their webpage. I thought that some of the suggestions (if you do them manually) would help out with battery life a bit, obviously disabling and enabling services all the time is a pain, but it will for sure help, and if it was automated that would help as well...
There are several settings you could add to the iPhone that would greatly increase battery life for users
    1. Have the GPS radio shut off after a period of inactivity from the accelerometer, if the iPhone isn't moving there is no point in wasting battery life keeping the GPS radio on, have it remember the last position before shutting off to help speed up location reporting once the iPhone starts moving again.
    2. Have an options screen that allows users access to all the iPhone services that consume battery, this would make it easy to understand what services use battery and will make it easy to disable those that are not currently required, order the list with the highest battery consumer at the top and the lowest at the bottom, this way people will understand that disabling those services at the top of the list will get them higher increases in battery life. Currently to toggle the battery consuming services requires visiting several menu screens, some several layers deep into the settings pages, people don't bother doing this and thus complanin about battery life.
List of services to include on this page at minimum:
Push, wifi, wifi auto ask to join networks, bluetooth, 3G, location services, notifications, ringer/vibrate, screen brightness, time to sleep, airplane mode
Would also be good to be able to schedule ringer type/volume/vibrate, a lot like profiles on the blackberry.
    3. Have the option to schedule times for various battery consuming services to be available. I don't have wifi at work, i would save battery life if wifi was automatically disabled between 9am to 5pm, sure i could do this manually every day i get into work, but most people won't, if they can schedule it then there is no worry that the iPhone will always only be running those services that are required at the time. Of course there needs to be a manaual override in case something changes, like lets say i don't go to work on wednesday i would want wifi on for that day. Would be best to have these programable services on a 7 day schedule, or at least 5 weekdays and 2 weekend days, but the ideal is obviously that each day can be set seperately and accomodate all sorts of life schedules, just like a 7 day programable thermostat.
Currently a lot of people are complaning about battery life, mostly it is because they don't know what to do to conserve it, or they are too lazy to change settings all the time based on current usage and service requirements. Adding these functions would give people the ability to bettery manage the battery life on their iphones and would help to reduce the amount of complaints.
    Thanks very much!

Actually it is already that way. GPS radio is usually off, unless needed by applications. The problem is that many applications need it (including free apps that include geo-location based advertising) and that's when GPS works some extra. There's also another factor in making GPS drain battery: it is not the GPS radio itself, but communicating with apple's Map server while using it even if you're not looking at any maps. The thing is that location services rely on some information that can only be obtained through communicating with a geo-location server. Which is another drain factor.

Unfortunately it is not that straightforward at all. It depends too much on the type of network you're using and on many other factors. It is impossible to have a reasonably reliable ranking like the one you're suggesting.
What could be useful is to have a single switch that controls all services that rely on persistent connections (push, application notifications, some other things) but it is not that trivial at all.
    3. Have the option to schedule times for various battery consuming services to be available. I don't have wifi at work, i would save battery life if wifi was automatically disabled between 9am to 5pm,
Having WiFi on while having no WiFi coverage consumes, err, well, almost nothing. Especially in standby, when the phone keeps WiFi radios off at any rate. WiFi is the least expensive bi-directional radio and iPhone manages it very well.

A lot of people are complaining (including myself) because *it does not work right*. Not because I can't switch things off when I don't need them.

  • Battery Life suddenly reduced

Hi. Beginning a little over a week ago my battery life suddenly reduced by about half. My iPhone is warmer now, even when it's not in use. It wasn't coincident with anything I noticed, e.g. no new iOS release, no change in application use. I've reviewed my Location Services, no unexpected grey GPS symbols (and no purple of course). Does anyone have any ideas as to what might cause this?

Lots of people have lots of ideas:

  • Reducing Processor speed for Power problems

I have already replaced the power supply in my G5 20"iMac under Apples self-install program. That problem was resolved (no power), but now the computer has been unexpectedly shutting off and has frequent high fan noise . I reduced the processor speed and it has been usable. I plan to take it to an Apple Store because my 1yr. waranty is almost up, however, my serial # falls in the Repair Extension program for Video and Power issues.
I am hoping they will diagnose on the spot and order a new logic board or whatever. I do not want to leave the computer at the store while a part is ordered as it is usable.
Does anyone know what I can expect at the Store?
And, in general, can anyone tell me what happens when the computer is used with reduced Processor speed.I have not really noticed a difference, but I think I am just masking the problem.
    Thank you

    Hi
If you do decide to go with a processor upgrade, they're available from a number of manufacturers including Giga Designs, Sonnet, OWC/PowerLogix/NewerTech and FastMac:
    http://www.gigadesigns.com/
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/cpu_upgrades.html
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/accelerators/
    http://fastmac.com/
Most of the above web sites have more detailed information about their processor upgrades and downloadable installation manuals and/or videos, so you can check compatibility and what's involved in replacing the processor.
Here in the UK the Sonnet upgrades seem the most readily available and are available from the following stockists amongst others:
    http://www.macheaven.co.uk/
    http://www.macupgrades.co.uk/store/
I've also ordered from OWC in the States before without any problems. With the good exchange rate you may save some money, although be aware I've always ended up paying some form of import tax, so the savings aren't as great as you may expect.
If it were me I'd consider a 7455 based OWC Mercury Extreme upgrade:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/accelerators/OWC-Mercury-Extreme/
They seem to be highly recommended, compatible with OS 9.2 and OS X and don't require any third party firmware patches or kernel extensions etc. If you click the More Info button for the 1.467-1.5GHz upgrade, you'll see some benchmarks comparing it to the stock 400MHz processor.
Another option would be to look for an original Apple dual 450MHz or 500MHz processor card on eBay that's been pulled from a Gigabit Ethernet model. Assuming your computer's compatible with dual processors (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/13551), it would offer a modest speed boost.
    I hope this helps.

The iPhone 3G can not be updated anymore so don't click ads like the they don't work. Also the iPhone 3G is old enough that it needs a battery change. You can go to apple or an authorized service provider.

  • Does increasing the RAM reduce or increase battery life?

Recently I upgraded my Macbook Pro i5 13" Early 2011 from 4gigs of RAM to 8gigs. The RAM I used are PNY - 4GB PC3-10666 1.3GHz DDR3 SoDIMM Laptop Memory. I bought them at bestbuy and the "tech guy" said they were fine to use on a mac (and they were.) So I go home and install them. I love the speed boost it gave but the down side is it that it cut my Macbook's battery life down from maybe 7 hours down 5 (That's doing the exact same thing before I upgraded.) I searched online forums and they both have conflicting answers. Some say that adding RAM should improve battery life because the HD get accessed less. (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1090350) Others say that adding RAM is reduce battery life because it refreshes all the time. I know cheap RAM like these do not come without strings attached, but is it possible that I may have gotten faulty RAM? If so, can you guys recommend the correct kind I should be using? I still have 3 weeks to return them.
Oh on a side note, I was thinking of upgrading to an SSD. Does that also reduce battery life? Here's what I had in mind, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005T3GPXE/ref=gno_cart_title_3
    Anyways, that's all.

The answer, I regret to say, can be found in [this thread|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11980463#11980463|Th e sad truth about iPod/iPhone battery life].
In order to upgrade this solution from a suggestion by someone who isn't suffering the issue to an account of firsthand experience, I'll tell you that in a household with 2 iPod Touch devices that were both decimated by the upgrade to iOS4, this method cured the battery life of both units and will probably work for you.
+The solution boils down to the following:+
Using iTunes, run the "Restore" to factory settings.
I performed this technological equivalent of ritual sacrifice with full knowledge of the devastation it would wreck on the volumes of settings/passwords/usernames/servernames and countless other bits personal information manually entered over 2 years. I did it partially because I only half-believed it would work and was wantonly hoping for an even greater excuse to complain. 3 days later, I'm still finding information I have to look up and reenter.
+For my own part, I would have greatly preferred the ability to restore my iPod to a state just prior to installation of iOS4.+
Perform this restore at your own risk.
On the 4th page of the thread linked above, +Lawrence Finch+ describes a few less drastic steps you can attempt first if you are equally reticent to give your iPod a lobotomy. I tried them all. • Satellite U405 - What is the best way to increases battery life

    Hi everyone!
I've been looking for this quite a bit and all I could find are conflicting answers and some confusing instructions... :)
Even the PDF file for my U405 has some conflicting tips (is it recommended to fully discharge it or not?)
Let's say that I don't want to remove it and store it with a 40% charge in a low temperature location (?) because I also want to trust it as a UPS (power failures are common where I stay).
So, in short, what is the best way to prolong my battery life to its maximum? Should I fully discharge it once a month or only half way through? Should it never be fully charged or that's actually a good thing?
Thanks in advance for any wisdom anyone can offer on this!
    David

The best way would be indeed to put it out of the notebook, but you already said, you won't do this.
So, I would say to fully unload the battery once in a while and load it to a maximum.
This is all I can tell you right now, but don't know how much this will increase the battery's life.

  • Battery life is reduced

Hi Everyone, I am new to the forum and I hope you can help. I have a Curve 8900 which I have had for around 18 months with good battery life. About 8 weeks ago it started to fade quickly and not last long at all. I thought the battery had run its course so purchased a new genuine battery, fully charged and discharged at least 10 times and is no better than the one it replaced. It even runs flat from full when switched off for a couple of days.
My network provider is orange although it was BT but the problem started before this.
I also get email on the phone.
I hope this is enough info.
    Thanks for your help.

Discharging the battery continuously is not recommended for these Lithium Ion type batteries.

  • HT4275 how to increase battery life

My battery life suddenly decreased substantially.  Just in the last couple of days

I've seen the same phenomenon as well.  The trackpad batteries sometimes last a month or more and then suddenly they only last 3 days.  I haven't pinned down what's causing the devices not to go into low power mode yet, but certainly a software bug.   Until then I use rechargeables and always have some ready.

WRT putting your phone in Airplane mode, it will extend the battery life because it turns off all the parts of the phone that connect to networks.  This includes your cellphone.  So if you don't receive calls on your phone it will not hurt anything but you won't be able to make or receive calls, use any GPS apps like Maps or store locators, or connect to the internet.  You can use the apps on your phone that don't connect to the internet but that is about it.
It's not that simple. Putting your phone into Airplane mode will frequently DECREASE battery life, because there are still apps running on the phone, many of them need access to data, and if they can't get that access they will keep retrying until they can again connect. While you can kill some of the apps that use data if you remember to before putting the phone into Airplane mode, there are some that you can't kill, like email, contacts, calendar, reminders, Notes, Weather, Stocks, Game Center, etc.

  • Increasing battery life???

Is it safe or advisable to use  mac book pro with the ac power adapter plugged in even though the battery is 100% charged. And also I have 350 cycles to my battery and its health has dropped to 77%, and its been just an year I had the MBP. So I just want to take proper care of my battery, so please help me with some suggestions on proper batter care.

Batteries are meant to be used...leaving a Lithium-Ion battery on the charger all the time will degrade its life, not lengthen it.  But when it is on the charger and reaches 100% charge, the protective circuit switches the charging off and just runs on the AC power.  Some battery drain still occurs.  When the battery gets down to some where in the range of 93-95% charge, the charge circuit will switch on and top up the battery.
The current generation batteries are rated 1,000 charge cycles.  That is a statistical value, your milage may vary.  A charge cycle is full discharge and full charge, so draining to 50% and then recharging counts as 1/2 of a charge cycle.
Normal Lithium technology battery life is measrued as the point at which a battery can only be recharged to 80% of its rated capacity.
As long as your System Report gives a battery Condition of Normal, don't worry about it.
