Increasing Processor Usage when Encoding Video?
When I create videos in iDVD and it says that I am Encoding video in the progress bar, my processors are only about half used. I have 4 processors and 6 gigs of ram! Is there anything that I can do to have the encoding use the max my machine has? Could it be a hard drive issue? I don't think so though.
Kevin
Hi Kevin;
I don't think that moving the applications, iDVD and iPhoto, will do you any good at all. I would suggest if you have other disks available to try placing the source files of the video on one drive and the destination files for the encoding on another to see it that has any effect. It would probably be the quickest and easiest way to see if we are on the right track here.

Sleep Display not staying asleep when encoding video
Hello,
I am looking for a way to turn the display off and KEEP it off with applications running as normal, until I want to wake it up. It is not always staying asleep.
I have a hot corner set up so that I can instantly turn my iMac display off (including the backlight). This works fine most of the time, but when running certain applications, activating sleep display works for a few seconds then stops working and the screen comes back to life.
Example applications which cause this are iTunes when encoding a video (e.g. converting a movie to iPod format), iSquint when encoding video, iDVD when encoding and burning a DVD - seems to be anything that makes heavy use of the processor.
I have tried all sorts of things to get around this:
1. setting the sleep display timer to 1 minute in the Energy Saving settings
2. 3rd party application and widget "Sleep Display" (http://linestreet.googlepages.com/home) which claims to make the display go to sleep and STAY asleep, suggesting "This version may work for people who experienced the monitor going off then coming right back on" - which indicates that it's not just me having the problem. This "Sleep Display" application doesn't work with Leopard though; the author acknowledges this and suggests he will update it if he upgrades to 10.5
3. different application - http://www.imalc.com/Site/SleepDisplay.html - this does the same as the hot corner and wakes up within a few seconds
4. sleep display tool in Dockables - same problem
5. "shades" system preference add-on, this makes the screen black and keeps it black but doesn't turn the backlight off
6. tried hiding the offending application, moving it to another space - nothing seems to work!
7. covering the imac with clothes - not ideal!
Thanks for your help!
Jim
P.S. the screensaver does stay on - so whatever is waking the sleep display isn't disturbing the screen saver - this suggests to me it's a bug. Obviously a black screensaver isn't the solution though - the backlight is still on.I've got a very the similar problem. Brand new iMac 24" that shipped with Leopard -- my first Mac after jumping ship fom the Windoze side.
I had iTunes updating it's album artwork and since it was taking a while, I went to bed. When I turned out my light, I realized the screen had not yet gone to sleep (a good 15 minutes after it should have). So I set up a Hot Corner to put the display to sleep. When I put the mouse there, the monitor would go to sleep, but wake up within 10 seconds. At first I thought it was just the mouse moving as I walked away, but it wasn't.
I ended up turning the computer off because the big beautiful screen was throwing too much light. Since, I rarely turn my computers off and they're usually doing SOMETHING, this is really annoying.
Admittedly, I haven't tried some othe the potential solutions above, but this has to be the same bug. Screen saver stays on, monitor comes out of sleep.
Any help would be.....well.....helpful.

High browser memory usage when streaming video
I'm using Flex 4 and the Spark VideoPlayer. I'm creating an application where you switch between several videos. I noticed that the browser memory usage increases significantly when changing videos and never releases the memory. I ran tests where the video is being served over a content delivery network that has Flash Media Server, so the content shouldn't be caching in the browser. I profiled my Flex application and the memory usage increases slightly when changing videos. I think that is attributed to this bug: https://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/SDK-25785. However, my browser memory usage increases about 20MB when changing videos. The video file I used to test is an mp4 file that is about 3MB in size. I tried testing using a small video (about 300Kb) and noticed an increase of about 5MB in browser memory usage every time I replayed it. So it looks like it's based on the video file size. I was testing on Firefox and noticed the same results in Chrome. Any idea why the browser memory usage would increase so much every time the video is loaded?
Thanks in advance. That's normal for your machine. Video is fairly demanding in the integrated Intel GPU in that machine. Your CPU has to do much of the video processing. As a result, your fans will speed up to cool off the CPU which is working fairly hard. It's completely normal and all of the MacBooks with the same GPU experience the same thing.

Hello.
I'm running a tekkit classic (Minecraft) Server on a dedicated server I got from OVH, Im just wondering - Im currently using ClamAV for an antivirus, But I would like windows defender.
Im wondering if installing Desktop Experience on my dedi would increase processor usage or slow down the dedi even slightly.
System Specs:
RAM: 32GB DDR3 ECC 1600MHz
CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1245v2
HDD: 2x2TB SATA (Both used, specified as different drives)
OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
Theres only 1 indev tekkit server currently running on there, Im getting 0-5% processor usage. I may be setting up more modpack servers - but im wondering if installing desktop experience would increase the processor usage or slow the dedi down.
Thanks.

Not normal cpu usage when playing video files
Hi guys !
I've noticed that when playing videos (with every player , i've tried them all) there is a noticable cpu usage and with hd videos well the video is extremeley slow and unwatchable .
I have all the gstreamer plugins installed and i'm using gnome environment .
Does anyone know what might be the issue ?

Yes. You can put all of your personal default settings in the file ~/.mplayer/config. If it doesn't already exist, just create it. On my VDPAU enabled system it looks like this:
[default]
vo=vdpau,xv,
deint=4
hqscaling=9
vc=ffh264vdpau,ffmpeg12vdpau,ffwmv3vdpau,ffvc1vdpau,
channels=2
As far as subtitles go, I never use them so I have no idea. -
High CPU Usage when playing videos
I have exactly the same problem. I search all around and a lot, i mean a LOT of people is having the same problem, what is going on with Adobe Flash Player? Every video, specially in Youtube, i just can't watch 720p videos, because the CPU reach the 100%, all is good in my PC, it's just the Adobe Flash Player that have some kind of problem, i don't know what to do or where to search anymore for a solution. This is getting frustrating.
it's high memory usage and for some reason i got put in this thread and my original one never got update i am using hardware acceleration.....www.twitch.tv go watch any of the livestreams there

Why is Adobe Media Encoder so slow when encoding videos?
I had this movie on my computer but audio was out of sync. So i threw into Adobe Premiere Pro, synced the audio, saved it. But when i opened the media encoder it said my estimated time remaining was 48 hours? Is it supposed to be this slow?
I have CS5 for both of them

"Unknown error" when encoding embedded Closed captioning in premiere pro cc
I edit for a TV show and i Need closed captioning in my show. When ever i go to export the video and embed the Closed captioning in the video i get a "unknown error" when its almost done encoding. different spots every time. I never have issues when encoding videos with out Closed Captioning. I'm using a custom built 64bit pc. Does any one know how to fix this or an affordable software that can Embed fcc compliant captioning?
Thanks for the reply --
Some questions:
Where are the closed caption files coming from?
What software made the closed caption files?
Are you having problems with all the closed caption files you try to use?
Can you share a problem file?
Thanks! CM -
Is it normal to have only 4-12% of cpu usage when exporting video out of ae? I´m exporting it from render queue.
My computer is 2x dual 3,0 ghz prosessor, 8 gb ram, nvidia 8600 gt in xp professional x64
thanksAs Jonas suggested, CPU utilization may be somewhat low because the bottleneck isn't the processing of the data but moving (reading and writing) it.
I'm not saying that this is necessarily what's going on for you, but it's worth pointing out that the CPU is often not the bottleneck.
If disk I/O is what's slowing you down, one way that you can speed things up is to use three disks for your work: one to run the program from, one to store input assets, and one to write output files to.
There are a lot of tips for improving performance in the
"Improve performance" section of After Effects CS3 Help on the Web. -
The delay of the video is increasing every minute i encode
The delay of the video is increasing every minute i encode but when istop and rencode it goes back to normal, what is the problem? what is the best configaration to encode and stream?
is there a tool to detect the best bitrate for the streaming of the program, or to detect the best configaration>
thank youThis isn't the actual clip, I fixed it by highlighting and moving everything over but it'd still be a good thing to know for the future. This is essentially the situation i'm talking about. I would never use it for something this simple, but when more complicated editing is being done it isn't so easy to just move all the clips over.

Why does my camera roll say it has 39.0 MB in my usage, when I don't actually have any photos or videos?
Try trash the following file
com.apple.ImageCaptureNotifications.DeviceDiscoveryDatabase.501 from
HD/Library/ Caches
and restart your mac. -
how i can increase the volume when i playing a video? dont showing the volume control in the video player..
Are you sure you increased the caller volume? This is only adjustable while in conversation. So, while you are calling you'll see a few icons on your screen and one of them is to adjust your caller volume.

Bug when encoding f4v videos longer than ~ 1 hour ?
Folks,
We're getting a strange problem with Adobe Media Encoder.
We encode a long (slightly more than 1 hour) f4v video
and Adobe Media Encoder reports that the file encoded
successfully with no errors. But when we scrub through
the video (i.e., move the play head from start to finish),
the video hangs early in the video.
The source video in original H.264 Quicktime format
works perfectly and is known to be OK. We have plenty
of disk space and memory, so that is not an issue.
We do not have this problem when encoding shorter f4v videos
(even slightly less than 1 hour). Does Adobe Media Encoder
have a bug when encoding f4v videos longer than about 1 hour?
Is there a workaround?
Thanks in advance,
Raja. You can remove them from the iMovie timeline and replace(?) I believe iMovie plays the full quality video (there is an option on how iMovie previews the clips) but doesn't FCE play a lower resolution version? If you are not using the Highest Quality version in iMovie, what happens when the project is exported to Quicktime or iDVD? Does the video still studder?
Regards, -
Premiere Pro CS6 CPU Usage is Low when Encoding
Hello
Im haveing some issues when encoding H.264, well not issues but my cpu is not being utlized to its full potencial.
u have a 3930K overclocked to 4.8Ghz, and when im encoding the cpu usage is rarely above 60% on some cores but most cores jump upp and down from 40% to 0%, my scratch disc is 2 Force 3 GT in Raid 0 so over 1000MBs read and write speed, there shuldnt be an issue there, have 32gb of 1866mhz ram, and 2 GTX 670 FTW GFX cards,
My encoding settings are:
Source: 1920x1080 (squarepixels) 60fps, Progressive (Uncompressed AVI)
Output: 1920x1080 (squarepixels) 30fps, Progressive VBR 2 pass, Target 50mbps, Max 51mbps
Are there any settings to how much power Premiere uses or?Have tried removing the one 670, there is no difference, the project files are stored on another sett of Force 3 GT discs, so im reading for one raid 0 and writing to another, have done loads of testing on the disks and their preformance both synthetic and real read and write tests, and they perform exeptional, i dont in a million miles see how conventional disks could help. they just arent the bottle neck, now the last thing you said im not shure what you are hinting at with tuned your system ? can you elaborate,.. Btw thanks for the fast response

Late-2009 iMac elusive freezing when uploading video
Hey All,
So I am currently experiencing a freezing problem when I try to upload youTube videos through firefox and/or safari after... a checkered past. Hopefully this isn't TMI, just being thurough to save your valuable effort.
iMac Details:
21.5-inch, Late 2009
3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4 GB 1067 MHZ DDR3
ATI Radeon HD 4670 256 MB
OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)
I am using bootCamp with windows 7
-fyi i did have w7 virtual RAM manually defined (properly or so I thought) and have since reverted to cpu defined vram.
Funny part is when I was exporting a video from iMovie while simultaniously mixing tracks on virtualDJ while playing a youtube video, everything was fine. Now the history...
1. Trouble started when I was getting the 'click of death' and the 'beach ball of death' seemingly at random while running various apps one at a time.
-I reset my PRAM
-I was and am still totally unable to run AHT (superdrive is dead and all key comands do nothing)
-I verified disk permissions (there were a lot of errors so I repaired them)
-I verified the disk (it passed), I repaired the disk even though it didn't need it.
-I downloaded, installed and ran MemTest. (passed 100%)
-I determined that I might have a kernal extension problem so I deleted Virtual Box and that seemed to calm things down... for awhile.
2. So there was peace in the galaxy for a couple months until after running in my windows partition I tried multiple times and could not boot into my OS X partition.
-I again reset PRAM
-I again verified and repaired disk permissions (all went fine, tho agian there were many permission errors)
-I again verified and repaired the disk (even though it passed)
-I safe booted, it worked
-I booted into OS X, it worked.
3. Now, I can restart OS X whenever I want but hard freezing (finder is not responding and refuses to relaunch) still occures when uploading video to youTube having tried multiple browsers.
-Before when it froze Activity Monitor showed no disk activity, and plenty of realMemory was available.
-I haven't actaully gotten a read form Activity Monitor when trying to upload. I will tho.
-I have been unable to find any 'memory leaks' tho I may not understand how to track this
-My bootcamp partion is totally fine and I've since allowed the CPU to define vram
-Memtest just now passed all tests.
-I have had to do hard restart several times while trying different internet browsers.
-My OS X partition has 344.22 GB free of 1.35 TB.
-I have no external hardware plugged in, only a USB keyboard and mouse.
So, a few questions...
1. Did my manual addition of Virtual RAM on my bootcamp partition mess up my ram? if so why does it still test okay?
2. Do I have to run memtest as the root user to get a real read on my ram? I haven't done this, yet.
3. Why do I still get freezes while uploading video even tho when I try to max out my memory usage everything runs fine, no freezing?
4. Is my hardrive messed even tho it passes checks when I'm booted to an external recovery drive?
5. Is Apple trying to tell me they want more of the money I don't have anymore because I bought this thing 5 years ago?
Ya'll are heros for even trying. You knew that. I'm just reminding you.So, I've been attempting to solve the issue by using diskUtility to erase free space on my mac and bootcamp partitions to identify bad drive sectors. Unfortunately erasesing free space did not work after defrag on the bootcamp partition. It simply crashed.
Intitally on the OS X partition I did successfully erase free space and that improved all problems for about 3 days. Then freezes became random and increased in regularity. So I moved about 500GB of data to an external drive (the important stuff) and tried to erase free space again to make it identify bad sectors. So I've tried both booting into my external and recovery drive and having the utility erase free space. Both atempts failed when the utility simply gave up after 2hrs and would no longer recognize the drive. I'm booted into my mac partition right now and am gettimg more random freezing with 2/3 of the drive free.
I'm resigned to claiming warranty and replacing the drive after upgrading it about 2yrs ago but can't find any real info on what my model and serial number are. All info that I've found does not seem to direct me to the correct information as I've tried entering it into Seagate's website and it will not accept my input. Any advice on claiming on my Seagate warranty and possibly what the model and serial number should look like? I can't seem to find the right numbers.
