Increasing signal strength

Hi there, I have a question regarding the Wireless-G Broadband router model WRT54G V3. I need to increase the signal strength (not the range) of the device. What can I buy to increase it? It can be either upgrading the antennas or adding a wifi repeater (around 50-80$)
Thanks a lot

I need to increase the signal strength because at the computer in mi room, the signal is very poor, and sometimes (when i place the computer too close to a wall) the signal disappears. Maybe I can buy something to increase the power, something like this?

  • What is the best way to increase signal strength to my 5510L Hotspot in a rural area with bad coverage?  Inexpensive methods?

Living in a rural area with "spotty coverage".  No cable here.   Didn't want to go the DSL route because we will probably only be here 6 months.  Verizon rep said you'll have no problems with the Hotspot when he sold us on it.   Said we should get 4G.   Well, it turns out we only get 3G AT BEST, usually 1X whatever that means.   12-36% signal.  1-2 bars.  Very slow internet speed.  Frustrating.
I need a solution to increase my signal strength.  Do the extenders/boosters work?   Is there an inexpensive way?   Maybe I should have gone with the DSL with all the fees.
    Help please.

    Check into amplifiers and antennas:
    http://3gstore.com/page/13_will_an_antenna_help_me.html
Perform what is called a Site Survey to collect statistics about your wireless environment.  Compare those stats against the Interpret the Results tab of that site to see if anything can be done or not.
Most of this equipment comes with a return policy.  There shouldn't be too much harm in running a site survey, deciding what product to invest into, test it out and return if it doesn't work as expected.
Be forewarned, you cannot amplify a signal that is not already there.  If you are out in the boonies with no 4G LTE coverage then an amplifier may not have anything to work with.  Most booster kits are more effective with 3G signals anyways.

  • Mifi 5510L increase signal strength with an antenna?

Purchased a 5510L to use in a rural area.(north central Louisiana) Device stays in home with a tin roof, signal is terrible (-98) if I want to ATTEMPT to increase signal can anyone suggest hardware to purchase? I don't see an external antenna port on this device so I'm not sure what I can use to help boost, if anything will help.

For Jetpacks that do not come with an antenna port users must purchase what is known as a "cradle".  Cradles are like a nearfield wireless technology that allows you to convert the reception from a wired external antenna to the cradle where the Jetpack normally rests.
Check out Wilson Electronics for the current options.  Wilson also offers a variety of indoor and outdoor booster solutions such as amplifiers and antennas that can connect to the cradle.

  • Can I use the Airport Extreme Base Station with my already existing D-Link router to increase signal strength?

I already own a wireless router that I would like to keep. Could I use this Airport Extreme Base Station to improve that signal strangth to my room from the living room or to the basement? Would I have to hard-wire both the Base Station and my existing router? You probably have read this question more than once, and I have read some questions of this product too, but for some reason these Apple products I have some trouble with.

    Yes
Would I have to hard-wire both the Base Station and my existing router?
    Yes

  • How can I set up my time capsule as the primary base station with a centurylink router? I'm trying to extend my coverage, increase signal strength, and be able to connect a printer.

I recently moved and now I'm trying to set up my Time Capsule as the primary base station or router with an existing network that has a Centurylink modem/router. The TC still has the settings for my old network. I also have backups on it. I have the data backed up to another HD so it's not an issue to return it to factory settings if doing so deletes the back ups. Do I need to restore it to the factory settings to set it up? Also, what settings would I select on the TC (and the Centurylink modem/router) in order for the TC to serve as the router, instead of the Centurylink router? I want to be able to use the TC to back up my Mac's, print wirelessly, and improve overall performance. I tried setting the TC up and ended with 2 different networks. Can anyone please help me with this?

The TC has to plug into the existing modem router by ethernet.. you cannot use wireless.
You have a choice of which is router.. only if Centurylink agree to bridge their modem router.. this has to be done by the ISP and often they do not allow it.
Is your broadband cable or adsl or fibre or ???
If it is cable and you are allowed to purchase your own cable modem pick a pure modem version with no router in it.. plug the TC into it by ethernet.
Setup the TC in DHCP and NAT mode.. (depending on broadband type).
You must reset the TC to factory to do the setup.. no files are lost at all.
Here is my current recommended setup.. with Yosemite life has become harder than ever.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
    Setup the TC again.
ie Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg TCgen5 and TCwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place when Yosemite cannot remember its own name for 5 min after a reboot makes for poor networking. If the TC is main router it will not be an issue.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. but this change will mess up your TM backup.. so be prepared to do a new full backup. Sorry.. keep this one for second round if you want to avoid a new backup.
    5. Mount the TC disk in the computer manually.
In Finder, Go, Connect to server from the top menu,
Type in SMB://192.168.0.254 (or whatever the TC ip is which you have now made static. As a router by default it is 10.0.1.1 and I encourage people to stick with that unless you know what you are doing).
You can use name.. SMB://TCgen5.local where you replace TCgen5 with your TC name.. local is the default domain of the TC and doesn't change.
However names are not so easy as IP address.. nor as reliable. At least not in Yosemite they aren't. The domain can also be an issue if you are not plugged or wireless directly to the TC.
    6. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
You might need to do some more work on the laptop itself. eg Reset the PRAM.. has helped some people. Clean install of the OS is also helpful if you upgrade installed.
    Tell us how you go.
Someone posted a solution.. See this thread.
Macbook can't find Time Capsule anymore
Start from the bottom and work up.. I have a list of good network practice changes but I have avoided Yosemites bug heaven.
This user has had success and a few others as well.

  • Option for increasing signal strength outdoors

    Hello,
I have a new network that is set up with two time capsules, and numerous airport extremes and expresses inside a building. I want to expand the coverage outdoors on one side of the building. Since I'm guessing I don't want to put a airport extreme or express outside in the elements, are there any access points made by other companies that will work to extend the coverage and still allow access to the time capsules and other devices on the network?
It is possible for me to run the ethernet cable to the access point outside.
    Alex

Yes, but I'm guessing that apple airport extremes are not rated for outdoor weather, and a third party router may not be compatible with the apple network.. So I can still access the time capsule, etc right?

  • Why do i  suddenly keep losing signal strength?

All of a sudden, my signal strength for Airport Extreme keeps falling and disappearing. This hasn't happened before and all connections are fine, the modem and router haven't been moved and my laptop is where it has always been.
Does anyone know why this is happening and what i can do to increase signal strength?
    Thank you
    Chandni

Find out what channel the neighbour's network is on using the Airport Traffic Control Widget and ensure your channel is at least three channels away.
If it is a phone then try your network on channels 1 or 11.

  • How to increase Airport Extreme signal strength

I post this in the way of advice, which anyone is free to accept or ignore.
I recently switched to Comcast ("triple play") from an in-complex Ethernet internet system. On my Mac Pro (MP), using speedtest.net, I attained download speeds of at least 22 Mbps. Very fast, I must say. However, I noticed that my Mac Book Pro (MBP) speeds were considerably slower, sometimes only a tenth of those on the MP. I am happy to report that after some reconfiguration I'm attaining almost identical speeds between the MP and MBP. What did I do?
I had initially configured the Airport Extreme (AEx) to operate at 802.11n with 5 Ghz only. Using iStumbler, I discovered that my signal strength was a bit under 60% and the "noise" was 13%. Other wireless devices appearing in the iStumbler window (we live in a downtown apartment complex) showed the "noise" levels at 9%--across the board. I fiddled with the location of my cordless phone (5.4 GHz) and even disconnected it. There was no change in the noise level. I moved the MBP up against the AEx and, while the signal strength increased, upwards of 70%, the noise level remained the same--at 13%.
So, I reconfigured the AEx to 802.11n (b/g compatible). Voila. Not only did the noise drop to 9%, just like the other devices, but the download speeds on the MBP zoomed to around 20 Mbps, or just about the same as the MP.
Too boost the MBP speeds even further I set up an Airport Express (AE) right next to where I use my MBP. I configured it to extend my wireless network.
By the way, I have my MP connected directly to the AEx via Ethernet. The AEx is directly connected to the cable modem. I configured my wireless network as "closed," using interference robustness. I left the multicast rate in default mode, which is 2 Mbps. Transmit power is at 100%.
What I seemed to have learned from this experience is NOT to use the 5 GHz only setting on an AEx, if one wants maximum Internet download speeds. (This seems counterintuitive, I know, because the theoretical limit of 5 GHz is 300 Mbps under 802.11n and "only" 54 Mbps using the 2.5 GHz setting.)

Purchase another Apple AirPort Base Station such as the $99 Express to "wirelessly extend" your AirPort wireless network.

  • I just purchased a wireless connection for my Tivo but the signal strength from my airport express does not allow the tivo to load data. How do I increase the signal strength?

I just purchased a wireless N network adapter for the TIVO premier and am trying to use my apple airport express to connectand it  is in the another room. I am only receiving one  bar of strength on my network adapter. How can I raise the signal strength of my airport express.

There are several things that might help, not all of which would be feasible depending on your situation:  (1) Move the TiVo unit and AirPort Express closer together.  (2) Use another AirPort Express to "extend" the network of the first AirPort Express.  Put the second AirPort Express half way between the first AirPort Express and the TiVo unit.  (3) In the general case, Power-Line equipment might allow the TiVo unit to get a good signal, but it's likely that the Ethernet port of your AirPort Express is probably connected to your broadband modem, so that solution wouldn't work for you.  (4) Changing the band or channel that the AirPort Express is using might help.  If the TiVo unit is connection on the 5 GHz band, try one of the three-digit channels, which are allowed to use higher power.

  • IPhone 4s Signal Strength decreases after updating to iOS 6.1.2

    Hi,
Yesterday, I have updated my iPhone 4s to iOS 6.1.2 and the signal strength decreased from 5 bars to 2 bars. All of my phones at home with the same GSM provider shows 5 bars (full) and my iPhone 4s swings between 2 and 3 bar. Prior iOS 6.1.2 this was never the case. I would really appreciate if the developers at Apple can fix the problem as soon as possible. The low signal increase the battery consumption too.
    Waiting for your feedback.
    Kind regards,
    Cengiz Kuskaya

  • Finally connected but no boost in signal strength on WRE54G

It took a while but I finally got the WRE54G v 3.04.01 to connect to my network. I have a  WRT54Gs Router v2.07.1 Both blue lights are now on and it seems to be connected and working but I don't have any increase in signal strength.  I matched the SSID (broadcasting) the channel and WEP key settings. When I go over to our addition my signal strength drops to 1 or 2 bars and from 54g to 11g as indicated on my laptop. If I then connect the repeater right next to my laptop there is no signal improvement or change in anyway.  I disabled my connection and re-enabled it without any improvement either. Could it be a setting on the router or maybe it needs a firmware update? I saw on the web site that it met the minimum version at 2.07. can you please advise what i might try to increase the signal strength. thanks.k

Well I made some progress with my problem today. I'm not sure if it was a couple small changes I made on my router or just another day and a rebooting of the PC's but either way today Id downloaded a wifi signal troubleshooter called inSSIDer which let me look at both signals from the router and the expander and see what they were doing. eventually I got them placed to where I seem to have relatively equal signal strength from my basement to the upstairs of the new addition. More of less as I walk the paths but once I'm there it's not bad. I get excellent strength and connectivity so I'm not complaining yet.
My only remaining concern is if I should upgrade the firmware on my WRT54GS router or not.  it's at 2.071. which meets the minimum required to connect with the WTR54GS expander or so I read, but this router doesn't have the back up restore function on this version so I am not eager to have to completely set this thing back up again after an upgrade. Won't that reset everything back to defaults? Or does anybody here know if it saves my configurations? Somehow I doubt that it would but ya never know.

  • Signal strength seems so much weaker than my Toshiba notebook?

I am typing on my Windows notebook right now because the connection being picked up by my MacBook Pro is so weak. Is there a way to increase its signal strength? It seems so weak, while the Toshiba I am typing on now, although it is low, still opens up pages while the mac does not.
    Thanks for any advice!!!

This seems to be typical with Mac. I also get the same issue on my MBP.
When I'm in XP, I can get pages to load and a signal
When I"m in OSX I get nothing, not even an airport signal.
    What's the deal apple?

  • Boosting the 3G/4G signal strength on my Samsung Charge

We have a motorhome (MH) and it is inside a MH garage at our house.  In the MH we have an amplifier #803201, a 12" mag mount antenna #301103 on the MH roof, and a cell phone Cradle #301146 all from Wilson Electronics.
Today I wanted to try this set up with my new Samsung Charge phone and I was amazed.  These signal strength readings are from the Charge phone itself.  After the phone sat on the table for a few minutes the Signal Strength (SS) was -84 dBm an i was connected to the Verizon 4G LTE network.
The setup was using the mag mount roof antenna, connected to the amplifier, the amplifier was connected to the cradle into which I had placed the Charge phone.  This will knock your socks off because I immediately got a SS of -43 dBm.  Using speedtest.net I got a 122 MS ping, 12 Mb ps down, and 3 Mb ps up.  WOW, what a big increase in SS from -84 to -43 dBM.
I was busy with other stuff so I did not force the phone to 3G but, from experience, I can tell you it will be just as good or better for CDMA 3G.  BTW, I use this setup for our Verizon Pantech UML290 modem/Cradlepoint MBR1000 router when we are traveling in the MH.
One other comment, the cradle allows me to use any phone or modem because most of the new ones no longer have plug-in antenna ports anymore.  If you want to see this type of equipment go look at the 3Gstore.com.

Cool info. Thanks for sharing. I used a wireless stick in set up from another company a few years ago and it didn't work. I'm glad to hear the Wilson set up does.

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • Signal Strength 3502e APs

    Good day,
I have a questions. I am trying to setup a wireless hotspot using 1 x 2106 wlc and 2 x 3502e ap's. Before the 2106 could even recognize the APs I need to upgrade to the latest IOS. Now it can see the APs but the signal strength coming off of the APs is very (and I do mean very weak). If I walk farther then 10 feet from them I lose the signal. I have verified that the signal strenght is set to 20mw, the highest you can. I do not have any antenna's attached to the APs. I didn't think you required antenna's. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Stacey

Yes you need external antenna to increase the gain. For more detail over external antenna you can check the below link.
