Increasing Speed of Imac

Hello,
Trying to figure out ways to further increase speed of 24" Imac. I've maxed out the ram to 3g and hard drive is hardly used. Most of my photos are stored on external drives.
I use the computer mainly for photoshop/lightroom etc. I didn't really think it was that slow until we recently purchased a dell intel core 2 duo CPU / 2.19ghz and 2g RAM at work. This computer is much faster opening programs such as Photoshop almost instantaneously. Is this normal or should my mac be running faster. when opening photoshop or lightroom the icon usually bounces at least 4 times before opening. Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcome.
I run onxy weekly.
Owen

The only thing I can think of that would help load Adobe apps a little faster would be a faster HDD. If your iMac still has the stock HDD then there are certainly faster drives available for the iMac. That would probably help a little but I doubt it would make Mac and PC load times the same.
Even Steve Jobs' has mentioned slow Adobe app load times during his keynote addresses.

How do increase speed on my iMac or clean up?

Providing some more details will allow better answers to your question:
How old is this iMac? (e.g. Early 2008, Late 2012, etc.)
What Mac OS is it running?  (Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion?)
How much RAM memory is installed?
What is your hard drive size, and how much free space is remaining on it?
Are you running any anti-virus software or "crapware" like MacKeeper?
Is this "slowness" evident all the time, or only during certain applications or processes?

  • IMac 21.5 hard drive fan increases speed after HDD Replacement

The hard drive on my iMac 21.5 failed two months out of warranty, so I decided to replace it myself.  I replaced the drive with a duplicate of what was already in the iMac, which is a Seagate 500GB Barracuda 7200.  The replacement and restore went well, however, now the hard drive fan slowly increases speed during operation, until I assume it reaches maximum RPMs.  The increase in fan speed happens regardless of how busy the unit is.  This is not particularly a problem, but the noise at maximum RPMs is annoying and I assume the life of the fan will be shortened.  I ran the Apple Hardware Test and received the error "4SNS/1/40000000:TH00-9.000" which I've seen from another post that this may or may not indicate a problem with the thermal sender unit on the HDD.  During installation I was careful to verify the proper orientation of the thermal sensor cable, so doubtful that is the problem.  Is there a way to definitively determine whether the thermal sensor is bad on the HDD, or do I need some type of Apple-specific firmware installed on the HDD?

Beginning in late 2009 Apple began using HD's that had the heat sensor integrated into it, if you are absolutely positive your replacement drive has an integrated sensor in it then your problem might be solved by doing a SMC reset. If you haven't done one before here are the instructions:
    SMC RESET
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

is there anything else i can do to upgrade my system to increase speed i do a lot of 3D work and i am pusing my system to 100% 24 hours a day.
    i need more speed

Sell the 5 privately and use the funds received toward the purchase of a 5s.
Apple does not do trade-ins like car dealers if that is what you are asking.
In some locations, Apple will give you a small amount for recycling your
current iPhone but you will always get more $ by selling it privately.
Some wireless providers offer periodic reduced price upgrades - check yours
to see if they have such a plan.

  • How to speed up iMac

How can I speed my Imac?

Have you read for possible solutions over in the "More Like This" thread over here?----------------------->

  • How to increase speed to marker

    using FCE...
i am trying to devise a way to increase the speed of a clip midway through to have it end at 200% at a marker in the timeline that matches a specific beat in the audio. that is, i would like the action to ramp up from 100% midway through a clip to end at 200% at frame of my choosing to meet a beat in the audio that i have marked in the timeline above.
regular clip speed>sudden, rapid increase to 200% speed>clip ends on the frame i want and at the beat i want.
i am working away at it, but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
    thanks

The best way I can think of would be to first make it into two different clips (FCE doesn't allow you to keyframe speed). So first, cut the clip at the point where you want it to speed up (blade tool, B). Next, lets have the second clip speed up the way you want it. Highlight the clip, go to modify->speed (I believe the shortcut is command-J). Now type in the speed change you want (in this case, 200%). After you have finished with that, ripple edit the second clip to the point in the audio you want it to stop (or you can put a marker there by clicking M, and if you have snapping turned on it will snap to the marker).
While this makes a nice effect that I think looks good, it skips from 100% straight to 200%, which I don't think is what you were wanting to do. The only thing I can think of at the moment to do in FCE to ramp it up from 100% to 200% is to do the same process described above, but cut it into several sections, and apply different speeds to them (eg 100%, then 110%, then 120%... then 200%). There might be a better way of doing this but since at the moment FCE speed doesn't appear to be keyframeable this is my best suggestion. If you do enough of these clips with increasing speeds, you should get the same effect.
I hope I was of help, and good luck with your project.

  • Changing Fan Speed On iMac via Windows?

Well I've been browsing a lot about how to change fan speed on iMac from windows.  I use windows primarily for development and sometimes my computer can get pretty hot and my room can get really hot because of it.  So if anyone could tell me how to do it, it would be extremely helpful.  It would even be ok if it was low level assembly code.  I just want to change the fan speed on windows and I can't find a program to do it.  Thanks in advance.
    Matt

Oh it's fine!  I kind of wasn't extremely helpful because I have seen a lot of previous posts with not much results (they were a few years old though).  Yea the only reason I do use windows is because of .Net framework development :\.  I would like to switch to all java but I like XNA and Visual Studio.  Mono ***** so I'm just waiting for something good.  Anyways thanks for the help.  And if any low level mac programmer see's this, please tell me how you could go about this!
I'm sure if someone had disassembled OS X they could figure out how to do it.  (Not promoting this because I'm pretty sure it's illegal).

  • New Ram for my Imac doesn't seem to increase speed!

I just upgraded my Imac from 1 gig ram to 4 gig ram. I ordered the ram from Crucial. I took out the 1 gig of ram and installed the 4 gigs of new ram, and booted the computer back up. It now says that I have 4 gig of ram, however, I do not notice a noticeable improvement in speed. How can I make sure I don't have a defective module? Is there any thing else I need to do when installing new ram?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm not sure I totally agree with these responses, but I am admittedly no expert. I too increase my RAM from 1 gig to 2.5. I did this because I noticed a general sluggishness after installing Leopard. I figured the latest OS was hogging up some RAM, so I increased the RAM. I see no appreciable difference fter installing the extra 1.5 gigs. In the past, I have upgraded RAM on my many Macs and have always noticed a difference in the response time in Safari and other apps. What am I missing this time? If RAM won't do it, then what will? It seems absurd to me that a two year old iMac with 2.5 gigs of RAM should be sluggish.

  • Most cost efficient upgrade for A3 speed increase on '07 iMac 24"?

I've read a bunch of posts on this forum on the "hardware upgrade" subject and I am trying to prioritize my options.
I have a 24" 2.4Ghz iMac7,1 w/ 3g or ram and the stock 320g internal drive. I have my A3 masters referenced on an external WD 1TB drive using the USB port. I am on OS 1.5.8
As I am shooting more weddings, the speed it getting unbearably slow, especially when using brushes on raw files (from a Nikon D7000).
I would love to simply get a newer machine, but the cost is just too much with a growing family. So I am wondering what will give me the biggest bang for the buck. Most of my info comes from references found on this forum including the excellent installation guide at amfiteatar.org
    - Upgrade to OS 10.6 ($30)
    - change ram from 3G to 6G (Kingston Apple 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SODIMM and Kingston Apple 4GB Kit (2x2GB Modules) 667MHz DDR2 SoDimm => total $130)
    - change internal drive to WD Caviar blue 1TB $70)
    Total: $230.
Does this make any sense? IS there a better path for this?
Thanks very much for any feedback.
    Bo

    Update.
I did the open heart surgery yesterday (replace original internal drive from 320g to 1tb and upgrade RAM from 3g to 6g) and it is a resounding success.
Overall speed in Aperture seems to have improved between 2 and 4 times. Particularly noticeable are the retouch operation with brushes.
So far the 6gb transplant is working without any hitch. After doing a lot of research on it, it seems like the key is to get matching sets of chips from a reputable vendor. OWC in my case.
So for about $200 and 2 hours of labor (not including hours of research on the net of course) this 3 year old machine has gotten a new lease on life. Definitely worth it!
In case it helps anyone else, here are the 3 most useful links I have found for this operation:

Thank you Frank and Mr Endo.

PS: Anyone with an answer of whether Snow Leopard would make a difference in A3 speed on a 07 iMac. Some people on this board say yes but since it is not a 64 bit machine, I would not think so.

  • Software to increase the overall iMac performance?

I've been looking around on macupdate.com and I see a lot of software that claims it can increase the performance of a Mac. However, some reviews warn people, saying it cased nothing but problems, while others stated how they loved the speed increases the software gave them.
Is any such software safe to use? If so, what software should I look into, if their's a specific one? I'm wondering, because I run a tun of 3rd party things (fruitmenu, shapeshifter, deskshade, konfabulator, etc.) and I'm unsure if it's all of that software or not, but my iMac feels slow at times, even after fresh restarts.

    believe-it-or-not,
ALL those groovy things, fruitmenu, shapeshifter, deskshade, konfabulator, etc.
    EAT-UP processes existent in the OS (fonts, extensions, etc.) - they just chew-up more RAM, s l o w i n g
things down - NOTHING, except for higher processing speed,
me 2GHz,will you notice ANY at all improvement...
    I went from a 330Hz G3, 800Hz G4's to my Intel box now,
nothing can replace higher processing speed
    just remember, +speed kills - *higher heat*+
    Thanks,

  • Increasing speed between 2 Extremes with an Express

I have a rather tall house - four floors from basement to home office. It is not wired for ethernet and, since there are pretty much no unfinished areas to easily run cable, I use wireless throughout the house. Because I have an iMac, iPhone, iPad and, now, an Apple TV, I recently dumped my dlink wireless and bought two 802.11n Airport Extremes; one is in the basement and one in the home office on the top floor, which is where my Internet connection comes into the house (don't ask - I didn't put it up there). The AE in the office (AE1) is set to create a wireless network and the one in the basement (AE2) is set to extend a wireless network. Everything works, but I only get about 5Mbps in the basement, which is where Xbox, DVR and Apple TV all live.
I thought (based on a talk with one of the Apple Store employees) that I could add an 802.11n Express on either the first or second floor and increase my speed, but that doesn't seem to be working. The Express (AX) is also set to extend a wireless network. All three devices are configured with the same SSID, password, etc. As far as I can tell, the AX is only talking to AE1; looking at the 'Wireless Clients' I see the MAC address for AE1, but not for AE2. Am I wrong in thinking I can use the AX this way or that AE2 would show up as a client on the AX? Do I need to do something other than extend the wireless network? Do I need to use WDS?
All three devices are running firmware 7.5.2

Welcome to the discussion area, unkleho!
As you point out, ethernet connections would be the best way to go. If that's not possible, often the next best alternative is to use ethernet powerline adapters to deliver a pseudo ethernet signal between devices, in this case between your two AirPort Extreme devices. This will preserve bandwidth on the network in your situation much more effectively than wireless.
The AirPort Express is providing no benefit in your current setup to the AirPort Extreme downstairs. That's because the "extend a wireless network" setup works like the hub and spokes of a wheel. Your main AirPort Extreme is the "hub" and each other device resides at the end of a "spoke". Devices at the end of the spokes communicate directly to the hub, not to a device at the end of another spoke...something that the Apple folks should have known or explained to you.
WDS, frankly would be a very poor wireless choice. That's because WDS operates at only "g" wireless speeds and each relay or remote cuts the bandwidth on the entire network in half. So, with an AirPort Extreme upstairs, an AirPort Express as a relay and the other AirPort Extreme as a remote, you would have in effect, a "g" wireless network operating at only 1/4 of its capability.
Check out a pair of good quality ethernet powerline adapters from Cisco/Linksys or Netgear for your needs. When you can't run the ethernet cable, this is often the very best next option.

  • What is an efficient method for increasing speed without deleting photos?

    I have a late 2009 model, 27-inch iMac G-5
    Model Name:                        iMac
      Model Identifier:                iMac10,1
Processor Name:               Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:              3.06 GHz

      SMC Version (system):     1.53f13
      Serial Number (system):   QP******5PE
      Hardware UUID:      ****
It has become frustratingly slow of late.
Full Disclosure:  I have 18,660 photos and 81 videos in my iPhoto app.  I understand that deleting some of those would improve speed but these photos represent a good portion of my long life and having turned 75 on the last day of March, 2014, I doubt that I have enough years left to even begin such a task.
I would likely spend days and days agonizing over two nearly identical photos trying to decide which one to discard, then as soon as I made that crucial decision, would probably rethink my choice and pull the rejected photo out of the trash …
    So my question is:
Other than deleting photos (a task I will continue to eschew forever, thank you very much), what are the options available to increase the speed without a substantial commitment of funds from my meager life savings?
My frustration is such that soon, I will be forced to make an appointment with the Genius Bar at a local Mac Store but the nearest one to my home is some 30 miles away and I’d like to avoid the hassle, if possible.
I understand that there is software available online the purports to safely increase the speed of a Mac but not being a techie and of a naturally suspicious bent, I hesitate to download apps unless I’m absolutely assured of their safety.
Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

  • Mixing RAM Speeds In iMac G4 1GHz 17" Flat-Panel?

    I'm just checking here.
I have an iMac G4 1GHz 17" Flat-Panel, Model M8935LL/A (USB 1.1 version) that currently has the standard 256MB PC2100 (266 MHz) RAM module installed in the factory slot, and a 512MB PC2700 (333 MHz) RAM module installed in the bottom (user-accessible) slot. I bought the machine direct from Apple, so despite the "official" spec (which calls for PC2100 RAM in both slots), it's obvious that Apple knows PC2700 RAM will work in that machine. My understanding is that the faster PC2700 RAM simply downclocks to accommodate the lower 266 MHz bus speed of the M8935LL/A. As I understand the DDR SDRAM spec, any DDR SDRAM (PC1600 through PC3200) module will simply overclock or underclock to accommodate the host bus speed...but feel free to correct me if I'm mistaken on that point.
I'm fixing to upgrade the hard drive to a larger capacity model. I've done it before, so I know it's no picnic. Since I have to go past the factory RAM slot anyway to change the hard drive, I figure I might as well upgrade the internal RAM to the full 1GB limit. (Yes...I know Apple says you can't exceed 512MB in either slot, so please—no remonstrances about sticking to Apple's spec. The spec is wrong.)
Obviously, it's possible to mix the two RAM speeds between the two slots, since Apple shipped the computer that way. Here are my questions:
    • Is there any downside to going the other way when I upgrade the RAM—that is, putting a 1GB PC2700 (184-pin) module in the factory slot, and a 1GB PC2100 (200-pin) module in the user slot? The reason I ask is because my preferred supplier (OWC) can't supply me with both modules in the same speed.
    • Is there any performance advantage in both modules being the same speed—that is, both PC2100 or both PC2700? If not, I'll just buy the one of each speed that OWC has available.
    Thanks!

So, you know have 2Gb available in your flat screen imac?
Yes indeed—2GB confirmed as available by Apple System Profiler. Both modules are PC2700. Everything is working fine.
I guess I can understand why Apple discourages users from replacing the 184-pin "factory slot" module. There's not a whole lot of slack in the motherboard connector cables, so it's best to disconnect them in order to get the bottom section to lie flat on the workbench. I suppose some folks might be hesitant about disconnecting things, but it's really quite simple, and involves only three connectors. After having changed the hard drive a few years ago, replacing the RAM was a piece of cake by comparison.
A word of caution to anyone who's going to attempt it, though. There are TWO heat sink interfaces between the bottom section (where the motherboard is mounted) and the top dome. Those heat sink surfaces are coated with thermal paste at the factory, but the compound dries out over time, becoming a rubbery membrane between the heat sink surfaces. Once you separate the top and bottom sections, the membrane rips apart, and the firm connection between the heat sink surfaces is permanently gone. It's a bad idea to simply put them back together after you change the RAM module; you won't get a good thermal connection.
The solution is to scrape all of the old rubbery compound off all four surfaces (two on the bottom and two on the top section). I did it with a piece of PVC, but you can use anything with a sharp edge that won't scratch the metal surface—even your fingernails will work, unless the old compound has dried out to the point where it's hard. After you scrape the old gunk off, apply new thermal paste to all four surfaces.
The other maintenance item you can perform while you're in there is cleaning out all the dust, which accumulates in vast quantities and interferes with cooling. I vacuumed it out with a plastic crevice tool, being careful NOT to touch any of the components with the tool. Vacuuming can build up a static charge on the tool, especially in dry environments, and high static voltages aren't friendly to microprocessors. I used a securely grounded anti-static wrist strap throughout the entire operation, and even wrapped it around the vacuum tool.
    Good luck!

  • Problems with Photoshop performance and data transfer speed on iMac

Two months ago, I started noticing slow performances using Photoshop (above all using clone stamp tool) on my 27" iMac (late 2012). I did the AHT and I found that 8GB of 32GB RAM were broken.
I removed them but the problem didn't disappered, I also noticed that data transfer speed (both copy and paste from/to internal HD and from CF card/external HD) was really slow.
I tried many solutions suggested by Apple support, none of them worked out. At the end, I tried uninstalling and re-installing Photoshop: no more problems!!!
10 days ago, I received a new 8GB RAM module and so I installed it back... suddenly, the problem came back, I tried re-installing again Photoshop but the problem, this time, still persist!
Does anyone had the same experience? All other CC programs work well (LR, AE, Premiere...)

    yes, it does!
what seems to be very strange to me is how data trasnfer speed could be affected!
(just to say, I've already tried reset of SMC and PRAM, I've tried with different accounts and I've also re-installed the OS, next step would be formatting the disk and installing the OS from zero)

  • Any Way to Speed up iMac G5 (20"-iSight)

Hi, I was just wondering whether you can give a speed boost to an old iMac like mine. I have tried some utilities like onyx and still slow. HDD is 250 GB and I have over 100 GB free space. Maybe ram or SSD?
    Thanks.

There's very little you can do since the machine is not upgradeable. You can add more RAM up to the machine's maximum but that doesn't really make the machine "faster."
If you want faster performance then buy a newer model that uses Intel processors. If you want to clean up the machine then see:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation.  TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible;  Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided.  Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.  Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
