Increasing swap size??

Hello all,
I am trying to get a very old G3 up and running with 10.3 and I am wondering, is there a way to increase the default swap size? If I use the default it won't run very well so I am wondering if I can compensate with loading up on swap.

Lovell,
First, don't compare the performance of the Beige with OSX to your newer Macs; it's at least nine years old. My upgraded Beige G3 felt very swift with OSX until I got a G4 MDD at works.
Hardware config is everything for the Beige G3 series. T'is a wonderful yet strange beast that came in three form factors, three logic board ROM revisions, and with both SCSI and ATA hard drives. All those affect getting OSX installed and running with acceptable results. If you can repost the question in the Beige G3 forums here, I believe you will get focused help from people very familiar with the hardware issues this machine presents. Make sure you post as much about your hardware config as possible, especially case form factor (desktop, minitower, or all-in-one), processor speed, RAM installed, hard drive size and type, etc. Once that forum knows your hardware issues, they can walk you through the process.
Kappy is right: one of the hardware limitation of the Beige G3 ROM means OSX likes as much RAM as you can throw at it. Effective max RAM is 768MB regardless of what several outdated tech documents say.

  • Can I increase swap size by just adding a swap file for permanent?

    Hello,
I am doing installation of oracle 11gR2 database on Linux.
the swap area size is not enough. so can't go thought OUI's pre-system check before installation.
the system administrator says, he really feel hard to find out any free uppartitioned disk space for adding more to current swap.
he wants me to see if he can add a swap file (rather than an entire device/partition) for swap space.
    I checked docs:
How to Create a Swap Device on Enterprise Linux [ID 432991.1]
    it says,
"If no free, unpartitioned disk space exists, a swap file (rather than an entire device/partition) can be used for swap space as a *temporary*"
but why temporary? why not permanent (I don't want to have trouble in future) is there anyone can help me to confirm?
Thank you very much in advance.

    Hi,
As I understand, you want to increase the size of the root partition (where you installed Solaris) which resides in c1t0d0s0. I think it can be done using Concatenations from Solaris Volume Manager (SVM).
I have tried it in non root partition like /export/home and it is very easy.
    metainit -f d0 2 1 c1t0d0s7 1 c2t0d0s7 //this will create volume d0 as a concatenation
    growfs -M /export/home /dev/md/rdsk/d0 //this will grow the /export/home partition

  • Swap size and / space from Oracle Linux VM Template

    Hi,
I created few VMs with OVM_OL5U8_x86_64_PVM.ova.
However, root file system is 10GB and swap is 2GB even I created 50GB virtual disk for VM system.
I can't change these fixed size.
Can I increase this from template?
I create additional virtual disk and add to VM to use bigger swap(using OS command) but just want to implement default system virtual disk provides bigger than 10GB root filesystem and bigger swap size.
    Thanks,
    Jason

I tried exactly same with another disk but got same error please find the screen shots.

    2. Why is there 4 lines mentionning SWAP on the df OUTPUT?
    3. With 8GB of RAM on this machine do I need to increase the SWAP?
    4. If yes how to increase the SWAP?
    Thanks in advance !

Swap can be a confusing thing. It's an overloaded term that people often use to mean somewhat different things.
    1. Determine the swap allocated for the system with swap -l. The number of blocks minus the swaplo value will give you the true count. Blocks are 512 bytes, so do the math to get a GB value.
    2. df output reflects file systems that are currently in use. In Solaris 10 there are a few virtual file systems that are backed by swap space itself. You'll notice all these swap fs components have the same size because they use the swap as a common pool.
    3. Sizing swap shouldn't be based strictly on the amount of physical memory available. While there are guidelines for doing precisely that, those guidelines are given for the general case (i.e., no information on the apps that will be running). Monitoring demand is key. swap -s and vmstat will both give you a good general view of the demand for swap.
But, if you're a guidelines sort of person:
    http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/817-5093/fsswap-31050?a=view
    4. The easiest way to increase swap is to make files that can be added to the overall swap space. I generally prefer this approach from the ground up, because it means I never have to dedicate disk space to a swap region. There are different steps for doing it with UFS and ZFS. Here's the ufs way:
    a) Pick a UFS file system with space on a disk that isn't hot. Make a swap file and add it to the swap space like so:
    - # mkfile 1024m /filesys2/swapfile
    - # swap -a /filesys2/swapfile
Then check the outcome with swap -l and swap -s.
In many cases I will add a swap file to a customer's system and remove the partition-based swap (swap -d) that they have. There is no appreciable difference in performance and the flexibility of moving swap can come in handy when a system has to accept a different workload with a minimum of downtime.

As this is production system, you better go with SAP's recommendations.
You do Zero memory  (Default memory parameters) open an OSS message and probably
you can do quick sizer modeling also.

  • Oracle Coherence increasing Swap Utilization

We are using Oracle Coherence on linux servers. However, we noticed that because of Coherence processes running, often our swap utilization % increases too much, sometimes becoming more than 98%, even touched 100% a few times.
Once we kill all the coherence related processes, then it becomes normal.
Is there any way we can make coherence processes to only use a particular size of Swap space ?
Currently increasing swap space is not in our scope.
    Please suggest.

    Hi,
We are using Oracle Coherence on linux servers. However, we noticed that because of Coherence processes running, often our swap utilization % increases too much, sometimes becoming more than 98%, even touched 100% a few times.
Swapping itself (1%-100%) is not a good sign and should be avoided by ensure that you have sufficient memory such that you are not making active use of swap space on your machines. The active usage of SWAP space will have significant performance degradation.
Is there any way we can make coherence processes to only use a particular size of Swap space ?Manage your memory by allocating heap using -Xmx for Coherence JVMs. You need to ensure that the sufficient RAM memory is available on the server for Coherence JVMs and other operating system processes and do not consume all the RAM.
To temporarily set the swappiness, as the root user echo a value onto /proc/sys/vm/swappiness. The following command will set swappniess to 0:
echo 0 >/proc/sys/vm/swappiness //To set the value permanently, modify the /etc/sysctl.conf file.
    Hope this helps!
    Cheers,

I would guess that the HDMI port on your mac is for output only - no input, and that's what your'e attempting to do when you attach the mac to your xbox. I looked in Mactracker and it lists the HDMI port as video output for both the 13" Retina MacBook Pro and the 15" Retina MacBook Pro (your post didn't say which one you have), so looks like that is the issue..
