Increasing time at end of transfer to new machine?

I got a shiny new iMac and have been for hours now, transfering data from the old machine to the new one. I was quite happy when it got
down to only 6 minutes left... then the the counter turned around and started going up for the past hour - with it now showing less than
a millimeter on the progress bar, it is back up to an hour and 15 minutes to go. Is this normal or is something screwed up.

What is the profile folder path you're currently using?
Which profile is that - the one newly created, or the one copied over from the old machine?
Can you post the contents of profiles.ini?
Have you made any changes to the 'Local Directory' setting on the old machine?

  • What _doesn't_ transfer to new machine via target disk?

    Hello,
I upgraded from an old 867 tower to a Mac Pro and during installation I transferred my old disk's files via the firewire target disk mode. Everything seemed to transfer exactly, and most applications run fine.
    Most.
Recently I found that Quicken couldn't find my current financial file, and I couldn't find it anywhere on the new machine, so I had to hook the old machine back up (glad I didn't erase the disk and sell it like I'd planned!) & transferred it manually. Now, Dreamweaver can't access my website at all, & I'm not sure what settings to even look at.
What doesn't get transferred when transferring files with this method? Where should I look (and for what) when I run across these oddball flukes?
Thanks in advance for any help with this admittedly ambiguous question.
    Best,
    Sean

I said before that if you transfer all your PPC applications as well as contents of the /Library/ and /System/ folders you will end up losing all the benefits of the Intel machine or worse you will have to reinstall OS X. PPC software is not intended to be used on Intel Macs, especially at the system level.
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3 or G4 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior (does not work), TechTool Pro (pre-4.5.1 versions do not work), SuperDuper (newest release works), and Drive Genius (untested) may not work properly on Intel-Macs. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

  • Itunes and Ipod Classic stop before song ends after transfer to new computer

I purchased a new Windows 7 computer and transferred my library from my XP computer.
I restored my library and all seemed well with the world.
I synched my IPod classic 120GB with over 8000 songs.
I was listening to the IPOD on my docking station when I started noticing that songs would just stop before the end of the song.
I thought my 120GB Ipod was dying, so I purchased a new 160GB.
    The problem continued.
I then listened to them on the new computer in Itunes and they did not completely stop, they just skipped to the next track at the same place as it froze on my IPOD.
I listened to the same song on my old computer through Itunes and it played correctly.
I have do not have the Itunes Match and the songs that I currently know that have the problem were purchased on Itunes.
Any suggestions as how to resolve the issue?

I would try copying over the tracks from your XP computer again as the files from the first transfer may be corrupted.

My eyes just glazed over...Please in the future break down each of your issues with paragraphs separated by two carriage returns. It would be much easier when trying to address your issues.
Go to Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Keyboard and Mouse -> Mouse
And edit your mouse settings to do what you want it to do.
Secondly, this is not the place to vent. If you have a complaint, there is:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
    or http://www.apple.com/contact/
We are just end users here helping other end users.
Third, from my understanding, it would appear you are concerned about the noise the hard drive makes when it falls asleep? Why not put your machine in screen saver mode instead? Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Energy Saver turn off all Energy Saver settings, or set them to run Never.
Fourth, if your machine was purchased just a few days ago, you may still be able to get an exchange from the store, quicker than you can get a repair done. You may want to look into that possibility.
Fifth, it does appear you found the Logic forum. I would persist in asking there how to solve your technical issue with Logic regarding the audio. It may be you don't have to do anything special to the hard drive. Remember audio can be transmitted by wire, avoiding ambient sounds.
    Good luck!

  • When I transfer a playlist which I modified song ending times, it does not transfer to idvd project. Any suggestions?

When I transfer a playlist, where I modified the songs ending times, it does not transfer as edited to my idvd slide show project. It reverts back to original song times. I am trying to edit songs to match slide show segments.
    Any suggestions?

Use Garageband to edit the songs. Save them as new files for use with your slide show.  The modifications made in iTunes do not modify the song files, they only tell iTunes how to play the songs.

  • I used an external hard drive for my backups via Time Capsule.  I bought a new computer and I want to transfer all my old fonts over to the new one but when I go into the Font Library from the hard drive backup but my downloaded fonts aren't there?

I used an external hard drive to back up my computer using Time Capsule before I bought a new one.  I am slowly transferring information fromt he backup to my new computer and I want to transfer over my old font book.  When I go into the Font folder on the hard drive the only fonts that show up are the ones that came stock with the computer not any of the ones I have downloaded over time.  Could they be downloaded somewhere else?

The answer to that would probably be "Yes." If you don't remember where your fonts were stored, you may want to search your backups for any of the font files you know the names to. See where that takes you.
Ideally, Font Book and other font managers will temporarily store the fonts you "installed" into the System when you run the OS. When you shut down, etc. they are removed and reloaded on restart. The permanent place fonts reside is where you saved them when or after you downloaded them. I typically create a Resources folder on the root level of the computer and place a Fonts folder there. Then I install fonts from there, and they are available to all users on that iMac.
Perhaps if you did not have that kind of a strategy, perhaps many of them are still in your Downloads folder?

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

    IS THE SITUATION HOPELESS
I used Target mode to transfer files to a new i7  iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 from an older Dual core Intel machine (EMC 2105) also on 10.6.8. but originally Tiger 10.4. The operation was successful and I ejected the disk icon from the new machine and powered down the old machine. When this was restarted the next day there was a grey screen with flashing Mac symbol alternating with a 'no entry' sign and occasionally a question mark.Keyboard and mouse were unusable so k inserted the original instal disc (No.1 for 10.4. with installer 1.0.4) which came with the machine in 2006 in an attempt to boot from this. The ensuing window said this was not possible and now it cannot be ejected.I have tried everything ! It offers Disk Utility and other options like Terminal but that doesn't work either.I 'repaired disk' and that was pronounced o.k. None of the various keystrokes at start up will work, and the computer will only offer the installer disc continually. The only option would seem to be is to erase the hard drive completely from the disc in the machine.I don't want to do this as there is still material which I need to recover. I think the drive has in some way been corrupted by using it in target mode, and I don't know if there are any other options to try.
Please tell me how to get this disc to eject !

Have you seen this type of problem before? I think it could be a serious issue for anyone in a similar position.
No; but then, I've not had occasion to use TDM. I've been using firerwire drives for over 10 years, both FW400 and FW800, with no issues except a bit of instability using a B&W G3 machine.
TDM should be safe. Using cautious, manual copying of files from the Target machine to the Host machine should not result in unexpected loss of files or damage to the Target drive's directories. It should behave exactly the same as if it were an external (to the Host) firewire drive.
    •  I don't suppose there is anything I can do to 'put back' lost items from a separate Time Machine drive which has an up to date backup on it.
There is probably a way to do that - seems to me that's one of the reasons for a Time Machine volume.
On the other hand, if the Time Machine volume is rigidly linked to the now-absent OS on the original drive, there may be no way to effectively access the files in the TM archive.
I know that using a cloned drive would work well in this instance.
I have no experience with Time Machine, so perhaps someone who has will chime in with suggestions.
With the machine in TDM with the other machine, have you tried running Disk Utility to see if you can effect repairs to the drive?

    Hello
I bought my wife a new MacBook Pro, in setting it up for her, I took her Time Machine external drive to migrate onto the new machine but her old MBP not only was on 10.6, it was my old machine which I was still Administrator for.
i plugged in the external drive to start the migration process after entering her name and username from the old machine which gave me the options on transferring the old data over.
I also unchecked the Administrative end that had my info hoping that ONLY her data, files, etc., would be the ones sent over to her new machine which I wanted her to be the ONLY Administrator for. All went like clockwork until the restart.
Normally the screen should show the username and only need the password but both entries were blank, as in ‘Other’ sign in option available only. I entered her name and password, nothing….used her username and password, nothing. Used my old Administrator name and password, NOTHING!
I tried defaulting to factory settings from the Restore feature but it directs me to notify Apple. I tried in Terminal to change the password, nothing. I tried to boot from MY external drive and it doesn’t recognize it. I tried to even use my external drive which actually has the Mavericks upgrade, nothing!
Basically I can only get the startup screen which isn’t accepting the username/password or the Restore feature which doesn’t offer any options helpful!
Please, how do I start from scratch and start over here? Or simply change the Administrator name and password so I can proceed with everything thats already on there? I wish I could even boot from another drive but no luck on anything!

First, on the old machine, make your wife's account an admin one. Log into it and delete yours. Then, update the TM backup. Finally, use Internet recovery mode, ⌘⌥R, erase the HD, and restore the OS. One first boot, follow the steps outlined in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide.

  • I cannot transfer music from my external hard drive to my new machine. Help!

I backed up all of my iTunes from my old computer to my external hard drive. When I went to transfer them to my new computer, they did not show up. They can only be accessed if the hard drive is connected.  I downloaded the iTunes version for Windows 7- the 64 bit version- on my new machine. Any ideas? Thanks! Also, anything new I have purchased and downloaded onto the new machine is fine. Just all the old stuff doesn't "stick." It's only about 3,000 songs. I'm sure it is something silly and simple, yeah?

Copying the files directly from a Time Machine backup may be possible but I don't recommend it. Your new hard disk is essentially a new computer to Time Machine, and it will have problems understanding where to put the individual files. What you're trying to do is just not the right way to go about it.
To restore from a Time Machine backup, boot Lion Recovery and select "Restore from Time Machine backup".

  • Using time capsule to migrate to a new macbook

i just purchased a new macbook (see specs below). i used time capsule to backup my old macbook which i am now selling. two questions... can i use time machine in migration assist to transfer all the info from my old mac to my new one? if so how? thanks for any help you can give me.

Yes. Or you can simply connect the two computers via Firewire cable and boot your old computer into Target Disk Mode. Use Migration Assistant to transfer your files.
Note that your old username/account name and the one on the new machine cannot be the same if you plan to migrate the entire Home folder.
Also note that the new machine will have Leopard, not Tiger. Do not attempt to migrate the operating system. Restrict your transfers to the Home folder and third-party applications.

    Content and Apple IDs -
Content is forever tied to the Apple ID that bought it. Apple does not transfer content from one Apple Id to another. Apple does not merge Apple IDs. You will never be able to access your content bought with another Apple ID with a new ID.

  • Migration assistant/Time Capsule-TM/ Superduper transfer

What would be easier: I am getting a new replacement iMac from Apple after I send back the iMac being replaced. Presently I use Superduper (back up software) to back up my system from my present imac to a FW 800 external hard drive. I also have a new Time Capsule that I have not set up for TM transfers yet since I'm getting the new iMac soon as was waiting for that to arrive to set up the Time Capsule: Would the Time Capsule be a superior way to transfer everything If I hooked it up to the Imac about to be replaced and backed everything up or can I transfer from the Maxtor to the new iMac after arrival. In the past I did Mac-Mac transfers but Apple requires me to send out the faulty (LCD screen) iMac before they send the new replacement. Sorry about the verbose query! It's late here in NYC. dennis

Afaik you could do either. Obviously it would be quicker to use your superduper backup not just because you already have it backed up, but also because the transfer back from your external drive will be MUCH quicker than from a timecapsule.
Your other option would be to setup the time capsule now, take your first back up then return the machine. When the new one arrives, during the initial setup you can chose to restore from a time machine backup there. I guess it comes down to when you want to do the waiting? Before you get your new machine or after =)
