Increasingly ugly storage issue

Ok, I posted this on another message board over the course of about a half hour last night, hoping to get some answers by the next morning. However, it was ignored. So, here's my problem, word for word.
So I consider my computer mainly a digital music library; of my hard drive's 320GBs, 230+ is dedicated to my iTunes library. Most of these files also have album art attached to them (not from iTMS). My HDD currently has 19.07 GBs available, which has been about the area it's been in for a few weeks now, or at least the 25GBs area. While it wasn't happening for a long time, lately if music is played on it for any reasonable amount of time, like 10-15 minutes, a very unreasonable thing happens: the fan starts getting really loud. Like, so loud that I have to turn my sub and speakers up to overcome it. This never really bothered me though since these were volumes I usually listen at anyway. But after being home for the first time in a while, I've arrived to find a much worse surprise.
I have a lot of music to add to my library, but everything I drag into the window freezes iTunes up. Not any music playback, although that might start to skip every 2 seconds, but just the use of the application. Music will keep playing, but I can't bring the program to the front or force quit it (because the window won't appear). Any activity in any other program after I try to drag-and-drop these files will also result in a beach ball for a good minute, although eventually the desired action will get carried out. I feel like this is something that could eventually become a much bigger problem, or I guess I'm worried it will be. I also just noticed that my iTunes on this MacBook can't load the shared library from the iMac during the freeze after waiting for 5+ minutes, but can load it in under 1 still without the freeze.
I'm running on Tiger on a PowerPC iMac G5 with a 320GB HDD and 768MB of RAM. The processor is 1.8GHz. Does this have to do with any of that being out of whack along with the HDD being 'near' capacity? Also, while I was writing this out the freeze stopped and the files started copying into my folder, but 5-10 minutes is a long, long wait to drag one folder into a database, especially when you have 59 more to go and some are very large collections.
The last bit of background, I guess, is that this was one of those models that received an extended warranty due to logic board issues, which I had and am eerily reminded of now, just without the flickering screen and slashes.
[The following P.S. notes were all individual edits to the post made over the span of 30 minutes]
P.S. I'm running iTunes 7.1 with VolumeLogic Beta installed, Safari 3 Beta with 2 tabs open and one Finder window open to my Music folder during this time. Although with VolumeLogic turned off, iTunes not playing anything and Safari not loading diddily (Wikipedia main page and an unused tab), I don't see what would be taxing my computer besides the addition of the files.
P.P.S. It isn't happening anymore, but I'm worried it could again. In fact now that it's stopped happening, I'm a little more worried, somehow.
P.P.P.S. There was a bit of slowdown just now after a few albums had worked fine, then it started showing the "copying..." status window, and then... "The iTunes Library file cannot be saved. The disk could not be read or written to" followed by "Attempting to copy to the disk 'Macintosh HD' failed. The disk could not be read from or written to." What...um, does that imply, exactly? That 18.49GB isn't enough these days? Trying it again after throwing away old copies of the other folders and bumping my HD back up to 19.05GB did the trick, you'd maybe think, but those were still two disheartening messages that really remind me of things I went through with Windows. What the F.
P.P.P.P.S. "Disk Full Alert!! Your Mac OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory. To avoid problems with your computer, quit any applications you are not using." Like I said before, iTunes is on but only to copy files and with no plug-ins running, and Safari is open with a Wikipedia tab and an ESPN tab, plus one Finder window. With the 19.05 GB left. What's happening? Is 768MB of RAM seriously not enough these days?

"But then I wonder how iTunes manages itself if all its sources are on another HDD. Will it automatically copy files onto the MyBook? If the MyBook isn't connected, will it revert back to the main Music folder instantly?"
Suggest that you cross-post in the iTunes for Mac Forums where the iTune users hang out.

Hi, I tried to download a bunch of my favourite TV episodes.  I was unable to get them all due to lack of storage.  I increased my storage but the downloads didn't come.  I tried deleting the already downloaded and viewed episodes but don't know how.
I'm wondering if I should increase my storage again but I'm not sure that's the issue.

You need more storage on your iPad, however, it can't be increased. iCloud storage is ecternal to the iPad and is used for backup.
You need to delete some item on the iPad.
How much space is used by your Other? You may be able to reduce.
How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
    http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6/7, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • Ios 8.2 storage issue

I have an iPhone 5s 16GB. Ever since I updated to ios 8.2, I have had random storage issues. One day after updating I received a message "storage almost full".  30 seconds later another message that my storage was full. Shut off my phone and did a hard reset. No change. Started to delete pictures, videos and apps. Available storage began to increase. After all of this it reported I had 1G available. Phone was good for about 6 hours. Noticed storage was decreasing by the hour and was down to 324 Mb. Deleted almost all my apps. Storage showed 1.3 Gb. Thought problem was solved. Noticed last night storage was 2.0 GB. Thought this was weird. This morning back to square one 0 bytes available. Apple needs to get it together with this update!!  I've read several other post on this forum with exactly the same issue. Deleted a few more apps this morning. 116mb free at this time, but I don't expect it to last.
Wanted to start a new thread with this problem.

You don't have enough physical storage space on the device for the update to take place. The process can use ~6 -~7 GB of storage space. You can possibly free up the required space by deleting apps and other data. The easiest way to do the update with all of the deleting required is to update the device using iTunes & your syncing PC. No additional storage space is required on the device when updating through iTunes.
Beforehand though, you should delete the update residing on your device under Settings/Usage, then under the Starge heading: Manage Storage. A list of installed apps will be displayed here. You can delete the update by finding it in the list (it should be near the top since they are sorted by size, largest first), tapping it, then tapping the red Delete App button.
EDIT: BTW, after an update, there's no way to revert back to the previous version. If you don't have the required space on the device for the process, the update will simply not install.

  • Oracle 10g RAC using ASM - Storage Issue

I’ve an issue related to Oracle 10g RAC.
I’ve 2 node cluster each being Dell 2850 Server with RHEL 4.0
I’ve EMC CX300 SAN storage with following partitions
    /orasoft     10 Gb          OCFS2 File system
    /oracrs          2 Gb          OCFS2 File system
    /orabackup      100 Gb          OCFS2 File system
The datafiles are on ASM which is not directly visible in OS.
I’ve common Oracle Home installed in /orasoft/db_1 which is shared by both nodes in cluster.
I’ve faced an issue recently related to EMC storage.
The /orasoft partition displays 1.4 Gb space available using df command.
With both nodes sharing the common Oracle Home (/orasoft/db_1), when ever I try to touch a file I get an error as No Space left on device. I’m unable to start any service with the same reason.
    Is this setup correct ??
Can anyone help me with this storage issue ??

Need a clarification here...what do you mean by "Storage System"...do you mean a server/node or the SAN storage system. If you are referring to a server/node's local storage, then it would NOT be possible for use by RAC, since the disk space has to be shared among the nodes.
Here is what you can do:
    - Create two partitions/devices (for example Disk_1 and Disk_2) in the SAN storage
    - Create a ASM disk group which would mirror Disk_1 to Disk_2.
Again, please note that the partitions have to be visible and be accessible read/write from both the nodes/servers.

    Hi,
If you create a new diskgroup you may be to add the same diskgroup to parameter file or spfile and which will be needing down time.
sugestion: Instead of creating new diskgroup you should to add disk to existing group.if you add asm disk to existing group your all problem will be solved and Oracle itself will be managing all.And than i am sure no need to add entry in the parameter or spfile like +db_create_file_dest=.....

  • ICloud storage issue; Restoring iPhone calendar from iMac after accidental iCloud deletion

I set up iCloud to back up calendars and contacts and for find my phone.  Initially, it seemed to work alright.  Then I got messages on iPhone that there wasn't enough iCloud storage, even though the storage tab showed that I had used none of my iCloud storage at all.  So I turned off iCloud/contacts.   In iTunes I switched back from iCloud backup to backup from my iMac.
Later I got the same message about not enough room in iCloud even though only calendars involved.  So I truned off iCloud/calendar on my iPhone and was given the choice of keeping the calendars from the iCloud or deleting them (a foolish choice without a failsafe!!!).  I clumsily and mistakenly hit delete.  My calendars have most recently been synced with my new iMac and appear on the iMac and should also be in TM.  But right now there is no data in my iPhone calendar.
When i go to calendars within the iiphone calendar there is a check next to Calender under "from MY Mac" and no reference to iCloud.  (There are no separate calendars for me, my wife, and joint.  Does this mean somehow these calendars have been merged because of iCloud?)
I don't want to do another sync until I can make sure that the sync with the iMac will resotre the calendar(s) to the iPnone.  How do I do this?
Do I have to do anything on the iMac before I try a sync?
How do I avoid these problems in the future?  The only thing I really would like from iCloud is "find my phone".  How do I keep that capability without backing up or su=yncing otherwise anything through iCloud?
    Is iCloud still Beta?

Apple walked me through this and helped me revert to backing up on my iMac, using iCloud only for find my iPhone and iMac.  The process, however, is not straightforward and what the respective mac and iPhone support people (yes, they have that kind of specialization) led me through was clearer, if somewhat convoluted, than any instructions on Apple's support or community pages.
Since my main concern was not losing my calendar and contacts information, the key was saving that, via export, to my desktop.  Sorry I didn't write down all the other steps - but I see that as Apple's job.  Back in the days of the IIC, Apple's manual was a model of clarity and completeness at the same time.
Bottom line is while my immediate concerns were resolved, the underlying iCloud storage issue was not.  On my iPhone, I was being told that my attempts to backup to the iCloud failed because I didn't have enough storage, even though I determined almost none of my alloted space was used.  This issue is not helped by the multiplicity of settings relating to iCloud, or the interfaces (such as the iCloud on the iMac through Mavericks) which present a screen of icons without additional information.
For my purposes, iCloud remains Beta.

  • How can I increase the storage capacity in Linux for installing Oracle 11g?

    Hi all,
I've been searching in Internet information about how to increase the storage capacity of a Linux machine, so that it can help me with my problem without success. I tried to execute some command lines encountered in some tips in forums, but no one works.
I want to install an Oracle 11g database, which needs 4 GB minimal for the installation. I can not continue with the installation because of this problem.
I use a VMWare virtual machine, which I increased over its settings to 160 GB, but not its file systems or whatever in the machine.
    I did this:
    [root@localhost ~]# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
    /dev/sda3 18G 15G 1.9G 89% /
    /dev/sda1 190M 12M 169M 7% /boot
    none 506M 0 506M 0% /dev/shm
    /dev/hdc 699M 0 699M 100% /media/cdrom
As far I understand the bigger storage capacity is used by the file system /dev/sda3. But what about the rest, I mean the 140 GB?. I've already increased the storage capacity over the settings. How can I tell the machine "please use the remaining 140 GB for the installation of the Oracle DB and other needed installations?.
How can I increase here what?. Disk? File system? Volume Group? It can not be so difficult, can it?
There are no volume groups in the machine:
    +[root@localhost /]# vgdisplay+
    +No volume groups found+
Linux is too complicated. Unfortunately I have to do that in Linux :-(
Can someone help me? I sit here since long hours without finding a solution :-(

    thanks for your answers.
    To Dude:
You can address the problem in a number of different ways, but please post your version of Linux and provide more information about your current partitions
The Version of Linux is Linux Red Hat Enterprise 5.
Open Logical Volume Management from the System Administration menu.
Select your volume from the logical view, edit properties and then use the slider to set your volume size, or click "remaining" to extend your partition.
I've already opened the LVM from the System Administration menu, but there is no possibility to see the volume groups, because there is no one. There is no tabs like Volume Groups or something like that...
I would try the procedure described above your answer and write you again. I hope it works...I will write you back in a few minutes...

  • I have won a 11 inch 128GB MacBook Air and want to increase the storage to 256GB, is that possible?

I have won a 11 inch 128GB MacBook Air and want to increase the storage to 256GB - is that possible?

When one is tight on storage space, offloading data onto a $79 external spinning disk drive is cost effective but not portable.  When you are not at your desk you cannot access the data.  On any Mac that has a MicroSD slot, one can add up to 128 GB of inexpensive portable storage using the following options that cost less than $100.  This is cost-effective alternative to upgrading the internal SSD on a MacBook Air for $200 to $315. One can use multiple microSD card to multiply the storage they carry with them.
Time Machine does not backup these microSD cards so using an alternative backup program, such as Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper!  would be prudent.  One could partition their Time Machine backup drive(s) with 64 or 128 GB partitions (one per microSD card) so another backup hard drive is not needed.

It appears that you're considering purchasing a 30gb
5th generation iPod. In your original post, you
called it an iPod nano - the nano is a different
iPod. Also, you have posted this topic in the "iPod
with color display' forum, which is actually designed
for the fourth generation color iPods. That's why I
    was confused.
The iPod does not have a USB port. You can use an
external USB drive to back up your music throught
your computer, using iTunes though. Is this what
    you're asking?
Sorry about the confusion. I am new to this tech. Well if this model of IPod does not have an USB port how does it communicate with the computer. does it have any kinda IR or bluetooth

  • Sudden increase of AEBS issues? Is it linked to the latest Airport updates?

Is my impression correct that AEBS issues of a certain type (a) have suddendly increased and (b) seem to correlate with the latest Firmware Updates for AEBS?
I posted already a problem (no LAN functionality, I have no access to printers etc). I was wondering what you think about.
Further, does somebody know how I can revert the FW Update 5.7 and go back to 5.6?

"Sudden increase of AEBS issues? Is it linked to the latest Airport updates?"
We are not allowed to ask that question. Remember, it must, must, must be our fault - we have to be careful about that. Well, I guess that if someone who leans to the right politically, can still question the actions of the current president - then I guess it is OK for Mac lovers to question Apple - so I take back what I said at the top.
