Incredibly Frustrated w iPhoto (simple copying)

Since 2005, I have nearly 35,000 images and video footage that I would like to COPY onto an[other] external drive.
When I started filling up my iMac, I purchased an external drive for Time Machine purposes, and also created a folder that iPhoto would link to when downloading images from my camera(s).
So today I opened iPhoto and panicked when I only saw photos taken within the last couple of days. I went into Time Machine and Restored...or tried to Restore all 35,000 images back into iPhoto. Something tells me that I was actually copying nack those images onto my iMac because at around 20,000, I got a message saying that my disk was nearly full.
I've looked up how to SIMPLY COPY the folder(s) (wherever the h%#$@ they may be) but only found words of warning or vague language on doing this. I've also thought about selecting all file within iPhoto and Exporting them to the external, but I don't even know if its possible to select/export 35,000 files. I'm also considering spending a couple if weekend toiburn these files onto DVDs.
In the meantime...is there a simple drag and copy method to this?

Thanks folks—I greatly appreciate all your quick help. However, I'm probably not making myself clear.
I want to know where on my HD all these files reside physically? I went into "[my User Name]" Library thinking I'd find a folder called "iPhoto>Images" but nope.
So I go into the Pictures folder but only found specifically-created folders I'd made in iPhoto (such as special events, trips, etc.) but again...no folders that contain all 35,000 images. I'm assuming that whenever I DO find them, that I can just copy them over to an external.
But here's where the mystery is...
I clicked on a photo while holding down the Control key, which then opened up my External Editor app (Photoshop), modified it a bit, then hit Save As...and in the dialog box, I saw the name of the image, then (in reverse order), the name of a keyword I'd given it, then a year folder (in this case 2013), then underneath that a folder called "Modified" which [supposedly] sits just underneath the "Pictures" folder that I referred to above...yet in the Finder, there is no "Modified" folder?
THAT is what's confusing me!

Do you have a smaller capacity micro SD card to try? I seem to remember from past posts that users were having problems with cards larger than 32GB, however, Apple's page doesn't mention this.

  • Why can't i add playlists to my iPhone from my mac while they are connected? I keep getting the following message "some items (meaning all of them) were not transferred because iTunes match is enabled." This is incredibly frustrating.

I keep getting the following message "some items (meaning all of them) were not transferred because iTunes match is enabled." when I try to drag and drop a playlist, song, or album to my iPhone. This was NEVER a problem before iTunes match or the last iOS update. So what is the deal? Why can't i just add music to my phone from the mac? There is space on the phone. The only way I have found to get the music i want to the phone is to have it download from the phone. This is not something i want to have to do: go through and manually add every album and recreate a playlist on the phone when its there on the mac. And, even more irritating, since the new update, when the phone is plugged into the mac i can't actually view from the mac what music is on the phone. This is incredibly frustrating and any help would be much appreciated in managing my music libraries for each device.

    Hi,
You cannot manually manage music with match turned on on your iOS device. If you want to manage music manually, you will need to turn off match on your iPhone.

DURIM - Okay.  I would expect the "Cache Warning" message because your default directories would not be the same as the ones in the settings file I generated.
If you go back to the "7.0" directory and open the "Logs" folder, can you copy the "Audition Log.txt" file and send it as an attachment to [email protected]?  We'll take a look in that logfile and see if it gives us more information about why this is failing now.
Also, do you have any other Adobe applications installed on this machine, such as Premiere Pro?  If so, do they launch as expected or fail as well?
I do have the trial Pro version of Adobe reader, but I have not activated it, because I fear the same thing will happen did it. I cannot afford to activate the subscription for that product and take the chance of it not working either. I depend on those two programs religiously. Here is the files that you requested. • How to create a Shuttle box in Apex with simple copy and move option..

I want to create a shuttle box in Apex with simple copy option. the demo application I downloaded from oracle had a two level selection query option which I dont need and was not even compatible with my version. All I need is a way to shuttle single query values between two multiple select lists. I could not find any demo.
My Apex version 2.1 with XE
query : select distinct fieldid d, fieldid r from field order by 1
What kind of buttons do I need.. ? submitting or url redirecting ?

    Hello,
    >>
The demo is not working in my apex 2.1 as I mentioned in the post.
    >>
Not working is not enough of a description to help you out. I assume that what you mean is it won't install into XE since the demo was built in 2.2 and uses some 2.2 specific technology for the install.
The way to get around that issue like I said was to get a free workspace on apex.oracle.com install the demo application there and then using some cutting and pasting recreate the demo app in your XE instance.

  • Need simple copy UI command (without selection) for KM items

In a list of documents in KM I want to be able to do a simple copy operation without having to choose the target folder to put the copied item in. I simply want to duplicate an item in the folder it resides.
I cannot find other relevant copy commands in the flex UI than the ones that are under the category 'UI Commands with Selection'.
    Anyone?

  • IPhoto not copy

iPhoto not copy & paste. I have iPhoto '09 version 8.1.2 (424) and it will not copy a picture from one event and paste in another event.

We've seen a few reports of this in the past while and no one is sure of the cause.
Use the File -> Export command. See this User Tip

The trouble is, after moving images to folders/hard drives I  subsequently delete them from iphoto to keep my macbook airs HDD with some space.
means you are losing quality, metadata and the version of control. If you don't want these why use iPhoto at all?
You could just move the whole Library to an external:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Why does iphoto not copy all photos when transfering

    Hi peeps.
why does iPhoto not copy all photos from an event when im copy/pasting to an external folder on my mac(for later transfer). All softwares are up to date and ive only just realised it happens, but when i copy all pics in an event then paste in a folder, the pic count is substantially different. for example i select all pictures in an event called 'new1', the count of files is 188. i then copy/ paste to a folder,  select all files and check 'info' and it says 141 files???
all i can see painstakingly going through to compare which images are in each place is that the ones that arent in my new folder , seem to be the ones ive edited in iPhoto??  conincidence? or am I missing something fundamental here?  Ive only just realised this is occuring. The trouble is, after moving images to folders/hard drives I  subsequently delete them from iphoto to keep my macbook airs HDD with some space.  So basically all of the versions of pictures I want, i.e, the new edited and adjusted versions are no longer! NOT HANDY!
      help please.

  • Is it possible to allow iphoto to delete fotos from the finder? (when iphoto doesnt copy the fotos into an own library)

Is it possible to allow iphoto to delete fotos from the finder? (when iphoto doesnt copy the fotos into an own library)

No  -- iPhoto does not ever touch an photo file that is not within its database
THis is one (of the minior) resaons that it is very strongly advised not to uncheck the preference to copy imported items to the iPhoto library - it makes importing and deleting more difficult and makes upgrading or replacing defective hardware much, much more difficult

I want to copy images to a memory stick for sharing with my family. This was possible in iPhoto via copy/paste but does NOT seem to be possible with photos...

You can drag and drop (this will result in a compressed JPG) or hold the alt key and drag and drop (this will copy the original). You can also select the pictures and choose Export from the File menu.

  • How to open iPhoto Library copied from Macbook onto external HD, on my iMac ?

How to open iPhoto Library copied from Macbook onto external Hard Drive, on iMac?  "Not enough storage??" is message that appears.

How much free storage do you have on your iMac's system drive and on the external hard drive?
And how have you been trying to open the library?  Do not import the library into iPhoto.
You simply connect the hard drive with the library and double-click the iPhoto library on the external drive to open it in iPhoto. That will work, if you are using iPhoto 9.6, the only version of iPhoto, that is compatible with MacOS X 10.10.
Or hold down the alt/options key while double clicking the iPhoto icon. This will bring up a library chooser panel.  Select your library on the external drive.
If the iPhoto Library has been created by an older version of iPhoto it will need to be upgraded to the new version, and that may require temorary additional free storage on your system drive and the drive with the library.
If the library has been created by iPhoto 7.1.2 or earlier, you need to install and run iPhoto Library Upgrader, see:  iPhoto '11: About the Library Upgrader

  • Can't open iPhoto after copying to external disk

After i had made a copy to the external disk, i can launch the iphoto.  Everytime, i clicked on iphoto library, it showed

the application "iPhoto" because it is not supported on this type of Mac.
Please advise what to do now.

Rather than copy and paste  drag it over
    and very important
    what format is the EHD?
The best way to move the library to a properly formatted EHX is
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • Frustrated with IPHOTO '08

I just purchased a new iMac desktop computer along with the iLife '08 software. I am having a great deal of difficulty with iPhoto. After repeated crashes and 20 minutes on hold with the Apple technical support phone line I was instructed to reinstall the Mac Operating System which I did. It helped somewhat as it is no longer crashing (yet), but I am now unable to edit or apply 'event titles' to any of the events that I had already imported or any new events. I do know how to apply event names as I have done this before, however when I click on the 'untitled event' field, the field does open up to allow typing in a name, but the field will not allow any text to be entered. This applies to events already in the system as well. Please advise.
    Frustrated and disappointed!

FIXED! I found a discussion further along related to this same challenge. I opened the Application folder/Utilities/Terminal.app folder and typed (I copied and pasted the commands in the terminal to ensure I did not make a typo error) in the following commands one by one and then hit return after each. The last command reboots the computer and when I reopened iPhoto, my problem was fixed.
After you put in the first command below and hit enter, you will be asked for your password that you setup when you setup your computer.
For those who may have the same issue these are the commands I typed in to the terminal.app application:
_*execute the following commands in terminal*._
    sudo chown root:admin /Library/Fonts/*
    sudo chmod 644 /Library/Fonts/*
    sudo rm /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS/*/fonts.db
    sudo reboot
The commands above: Fix the ownership, fix the permission, and force a rebuild of the library folder.

  • Import existing folders into iPhoto without copying

It seems like this should be an easy function, but I can not seem to get it to work correctly.
Just got my new Mac today and am still trying to navigate around (too many years of being a Windows user!) and would like to import my photos into iPhoto. I have a TON of pictures already on an external harddrive that are already categorized into descriptive folders. I'd like to import these folders into iPhoto, but want to keep my existing folder locations. Is this possible?
In the Preferences, I turned off the "Copyfiles to iPhoto Library folder when adding to library", but it seems that it is still creating a COPY of the photos in the DATA folder in the iPhoto Library folder. But in the ORIGINALS folder, the shortcut (alias?) is pointing to the original location on my external drive, not inside the Libary folder.
Is this possible? Or do I have to import all my files (essentially creating a duplicate of all files), and then delete the original locations that I have set up?
    Thanks for your help!

    cohencl
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
ut it seems that it is still creating a COPY of the photos in the DATA folder in the iPhoto Library folder.
These are tiny thumbnails that iPhoto uses for display.
But in the ORIGINALS folder, the shortcut (alias?) is pointing to the original location on my external drive, not inside the Libary folder.
Correct, the alias is exactly what I would expect to find.
Is this possible? Or do I have to import all my files (essentially creating a duplicate of all files), and then delete the original locations that I have set up?
This suggests to me that you've not quite grasped iPhoto, and how it differs from other apps.
It's a photo Organiser, and the idea is simple: do your organisation in the iPhoto Window and let it look after the files. Otherwise, all you need is a file organiser - put files into folders - and an image viewer. The catch with that system is that you need multiple copies if you want a pic in more that one album.
iPhoto works on the basis that where the FILES are is unimportant to you, it's the PICTURES that count. So, it, in the default setting, imports the pics to the iPhoto Library Folder and you can forget about them. Then set up your albums, smart albums etc., in the iPhoto Window. The same pic can be in 5, 50 or 500 albums with no wasted disk space.
You can very quickly recreate the filing structure you have in iPhoto: simply drag the folders of pics to the Source (or left hand) pane and iPhoto will create a new album with the same name as the folder, then create your enclosing folders in iPhoto (File -> New Folder).
Some people resist this because the feel they'll be unable to find their pics should they want them: There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
Rolls in the iPhoto Window (View -> Film Rolls) correspond exactly with the Roll Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library Folder. You can move photos between Rolls, you can rename rolls, edit them, create them, as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Roll Name using the Info Pane, the Roll Folder in iPhoto Library Folder/Originals will also have the new name.
You can run the iPhoto Library Folder from an external HD with no problems, just copy the iPhoto Library Folder there and then hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. Select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. Thereafter that will be the default iPhoto Library Folder.
Finally, if you choose to use iPhoto in the non-default setting, then remember iPhoto will not be responsible for the file management, you are. Therefore, you need to put the pics where they're going to live beofre importing, deleting will also be a multi-stage operation, as trashing the file in iPhoto will not remove it from your filing system. Migrating to a new machine can be more tricky as well. Frankly, I've never seen a good reason not to use the default setting, unless you're using two photo organisers.
Hope all this helps, by all means, post back if you need more info.
    Regards
    TD
