Incredibly frustrated with iMovie 10's user hostile interface.

Most people just want to import video, cut it and share it. Yet sometimes it seems these are the hardest things.
I had a company digitize some VHS and mini DV tapes. So I have very large .MOV files on a hard drive. Each tape has maybe a half-dozen stretches of video I want to separate into new events. Can I pull up this hour long video and clip it at a point like a scissor and move it into an event folder? NO.
The bigger question. WHY NOT?
I attempt to select a length of video then. and drag that to a new event. NO. The entire tape's worth of video is moved. Undo, try again. NOPE. Same. Takes forever to scroll and get the part I want.
Can I zoom out to better navigate such a long piece of video? NO.
It's like the interface designer is a sadistic monster into torturing users.
Look, I realize (and sincerely hope) some of you will explain what's going on. But really, iMovie should be for beginners. The simplest things should be EASY TO DISCOVER AND ACCOMPLISH.

I appreciate the thoughts Karsten.
from Apple's iMovie page
"A major prodution. Without the major production."
"Simple navigation makes it easy to browse your video library."
"Rated S for simple."
"It’s never been easier to make it in the movies."
I'm irritated by the fact that I have to go to Youtube to figure out how to use iMovie. No one ever needed to show me how to use Quicktime Pro 7-- what a useful tool that was, though not a replacement for iMovie, of course.
"a productive tool is no game - so discovering' features is most probably the wrong attempt. Spend some time reading the Manual "
Jonathan Ive and I take issue with that statement. Apple aims to design products to delight users and be easily discoverable. It's EXACTLY what they aim for in their apps.
excerpt from Apple's OS X Human Interface Guidelines.
https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/ AppleHIGuidelines/OSXHIGuidelines.pdf
"...you should support the user’s mental model by striving to incorporate the following characteristics:
Familiarity.
Simplicity.
Availability.
"An uncluttered user interface is essential, but the availability of certain key features and settings the user needs is equally so. Avoid hiding such components too deeply in submenus or making them accessible only from a contextual menu."
Discoverability.
"Encourage your users to discover functionality by providing cues about how to use user interface elements. If an element is clickable, for example, it must appear that way, or a user may never try clicking it. [...] avoid making controls invisible to inexperienced users.
Well-designed toolbar icons make the commands they portray recognizable to users. This familiarity gives users the confidence to explore the functionality of a new app.
Don’t discourage discovery by making actions difficult to reverse or recover from. For more information on this, see “Forgiveness”

  • Frustrated with iMovie 08

I upgraded to a dual G5 2.0 earlier this year from a G4. This brought along with it the upgrade to iMovie 08. So far, it has been one huge exercise in frustration. I haven't had much of a learning problem with Final Cut Express, Aperture, and other programs as I've had with this rather irritating upgrade.
Here's my problem. I have two drives, the primary boot and a secondary drive. I have located all the recent movie files that iPhoto has stored on the secondary drive. I see them, they are there, I can view them through iPhoto and also through the finder.
iMovie, in the Event Library, shows the boot drive with "iPhoto Videos" listed under it. My videos are not on that drive. The event library also shows the secondary drive. Although all my videos are stored on the secondary drive, nothing shows up as being available on the 2nd drive through the Event Library. It simply gives the name of the drive, not listing any videos, even if I click on the "secondary drive" label in the event library.
I wouldn't mind this odd discrepency if the Boot Drive were to show all my videos. If it wants to be goofy and show the videos as being on the boot drive, although they are easily found via the finder on the secondary drive, I'd just keep moving on. However, the crux of the problem is as follows....
iMovie is showing only part of my videos that it displays on the boot drive. I finished downloading this morning all of the christmas 2008 videos and the new years party from last night. Nothing is showing up in iMovie or through the event library, although I can see the movies in iPhoto and I confirmed they are in the normal location in the secondary drive under the iPhoto library.
I had iMovie go through its long slow process of building previews and such. Restarted the computer, all that stuff. For whatever reason, iMovie is only showing portions of the videos I have imported into iPhoto. Some it shows, some it doesn't. Worked fine for thanksgiving videos, but christmas videos and last nights New Years videos aren't visible to (or in) iMovie.
    Help?
Two frustrations that are pressing to me, besides the generally slow irritable clunky nature of iMovie:
#1 - why are the videos only showing up as available randomly? Some are there, some aren't, despite the actual videos being all together and visible to iPhoto in the same file
#2 - why does the event library show the videos as being on one drive when in fact, they are on the other drive?
    Any insight is appreciated.

Am I off track here anyone? I'm hoping this is an option that doesn't end up costing me later some regret.
I would think you could copy, alias, and/or convert files at the Finder level without creating any problems but I would not remove (move/delete) files at the finder level and then expect iPhoto to understand fully what is happening. My personal preference is to convert files to my "Easy Setup..." default editing compression format so as to avoid rendering during the editing process or as prerequisite to the final export. (If you are comfortable re-rendeing within FCE, then this is of little or no consequence.)
ADDED: As an experiment, I just aliased some iPhoto package files and moved the aliases to a visible external location. FCE treated the files as if they were the originals, FCE item properties point to and access the original files still in iPhoto, and, since, FCE is non-destructive, the original files remain safe and useable by iPhoto in their original location. You might consider this as an alternative to physically removing and/or copying your original files as physical "standalone" files.

  • Incredibly frustrated with service - hope Customer Service is monitoring this forum

Our internet modem needs to be rebooted continually.  We spent hours on the phone with Verizon a couple of months ago, and they said they were sending new filters for our land line.  They never arrived.  I don't think that is the problem anyway, since we have now unplugged the land line altogether.
I just tried to call Customer Support because I am trying to work today and the problem is making that very difficult.  I called 6 times and got cut off 6 times (even when I selected the choice to "add new services"!!!)
I just finally got through and am on hold again.
In case I am cut off again (or give up in frustration) I would like a direct communication from a Verizon technical support person or supervisor who might be able to help.
Respond to this post with contact information.
    Thank you.
    A frustrated customer.

I don't work for VZ.  But if you are rebooting your Verizon Wifi router because you can't get to the internet despite the WAN light being green, you have probably fallen prey to the IGMP Proxy issue.  On the VZ router, there is an option that is located here on your router for IGMP Proxy.  Disable it:
    http://192.168.1.1/index.cgi?active_page=6059
It cured my disconnection issue and needing to reboot my router regularly.

  • The newest version of iTunes is awful when it comes to Cloud syncing-file management. I'm constantly frustrated with what iTunes 'chooses to eliminate from my mobile device and settings aren't fine-grained enough to allow for real user control.

I'm endlessly frustrated with iTunes Cloud syncing, something that was supposed to make lenjoying my music easier. I routinely find that, though itunes and podcasts have been split, iTunes arbitrairily removes music files or in progress podcast in favor of 'new' podcasts. The settings are just not fine-grained enough to allow true user control and so we are instead subjected to 'Apple knows best' protocols. I understand and appreciate the level of exacting control Apple excercises over their ecosystem, however, more and more often I see them tightening control over things that should be user control while dropping the ball on aesthetic desisions made in producing their own software (see the hideous pull down tab for iTunes to access Podcast, TV shows, Music, etc.
I would like to see features like those in Mail and the Podcasting apps implemented in iTunes afor the management of content on mobile devices, for instance it would be great to swipe to delete files that you know longer want on your device, at both the album and song level. Another issues is the new pushiness of iRadio and iTunes Store, the app now seems to default to the iRadio page (versus the last page Albums, songs, etc. that the user was navigating, or in the instance of the iTunes Store push, if I doon't have all the tracks of an album i own on my mobile device 'complete my album' takes you to iTunes store rather than showing the 'cloud' download icon next to missing tracks. These are the tactics I expect from Google, not Apple (pushing commerce over quality user experience).
    Fix these things Apple, please.

  • New iMac and problem with imovie 11

    Hi,
I purchased my new iMac two days ago mainly to use iMovie.
But after editing projects for around 30mins it seems to freeze and requires a force quit. When I restart I can't edit or playback the project, almost as though it is locked.
I've tried deleting preferences for imovie and repairing through utilities. I've also tried deleting the projects and starting new ones but the same problem happens after about 30mins of editing.
Installed latest updates for OS X 10.7.1, and using imac with imovie 11
Could anyone help me with this?
I'm a brand new mac user and to encounter this problem after just one hour of use is quite frustrating.
Ps. I'm not sure if its related but in Finder on the left when all the places are listed, I don't see my username... not sure if it should be there?

Having spent more time in Apple Communities I am delighted to say I have sorted the problem:
    Entered:
    username : guest
    password : guest
    and I am now printing!
    Happy days!

Do you have a smaller capacity micro SD card to try? I seem to remember from past posts that users were having problems with cards larger than 32GB, however, Apple's page doesn't mention this.

  • Why can't i add playlists to my iPhone from my mac while they are connected? I keep getting the following message "some items (meaning all of them) were not transferred because iTunes match is enabled." This is incredibly frustrating.

I keep getting the following message "some items (meaning all of them) were not transferred because iTunes match is enabled." when I try to drag and drop a playlist, song, or album to my iPhone. This was NEVER a problem before iTunes match or the last iOS update. So what is the deal? Why can't i just add music to my phone from the mac? There is space on the phone. The only way I have found to get the music i want to the phone is to have it download from the phone. This is not something i want to have to do: go through and manually add every album and recreate a playlist on the phone when its there on the mac. And, even more irritating, since the new update, when the phone is plugged into the mac i can't actually view from the mac what music is on the phone. This is incredibly frustrating and any help would be much appreciated in managing my music libraries for each device.

    Hi,
You cannot manually manage music with match turned on on your iOS device. If you want to manage music manually, you will need to turn off match on your iPhone.

  • If Apple is so full of geniuses, why can't they come up with a usb cable to connect the iPad to a printer? This would seem like the most intelligent first choice for those of us who are absolutely frustrated with iPad printing functionality.

My sister has an iPad and an HP printer. She cant' print from her iPad even though a genius at the Apple Store sold the combination to her with the idea that it would be easy to do. Instead, I have to go to her place with my MacBook, she sends me an email, and I hook up my laptop to her printer to print what she needs. Why can't the Apple geniuses come up with a USB cable and an OS update to make it easy and NOT SO FRUSTRATING to print from the iPad?
I've been a Mac user for fifteen years but I could not, in good conscience, recommend an iPad to anyone until Apple considers that ease of use does not include regularly getting frustrated with the easiest of tasks.

all printers speak a diffrent "computer language" for a device to understand this language
    a driver is required
some devices such a computers come with drivers for a long line of printers and other devices
apple decided that it was better not to include that huge list of drivers as users would then not have
much storage left for media and apps
then apple let printer makers make apps for printing in app store and make printers support airprint

  • How can I export/share a project/movie with iMovie 10(.0.1)?

    Hi,
I generate a movie with images from iPhoto and underlaid a sound file. In iMovie the film looks great and now I want to share/export it. But the share button doesn't work: I click on it and nothing happens – no submenu, no window, nothing. It seems there is missing a function behind the menu item.
I closed iMovie, restart it – nothing.
I shut down the Mac and reboot it – nothing.
I deleted the preferences after closing the app and restart it – nothing happens.
    What can I do?
This happens with image movies AND with clip movies generated with iMovie.
    Thanks for a hint.
    CK

    Thanks Chris,
I will uninstall the imovie app using the mackeeper uninstaller, but wanted to ask if I trash /delete all the files
when I do this? When it scans my computer it says I have two versions of imovie and other files as well.
Just wanted to check if I will still have my trailer left in my user file on the computer.
Sorry to bug you, but I spent alot of time doing it and dont want to lose the work . So want to be sure I am doing it the right way!

  • Get error while Integrating with Oracle's Enterprise User Security

    Hi,
I am trying to create an Oracle Enterprise User integrating with OVD and MS Active Directory.
I am following all the steps in Integrating with Oracle's Enterprise User Security.
In the documentation section: "Configuring Oracle Virtual Directory for the Integration"
I have applied the steps successfully until:
Update and load the entries into the Local Store Adapters by performing the following steps:
I have successfully extended the Oracle Virtual Directory schema with the loadOVD.ldif
However I am getting errors in the next step: Update realmRoot.ldif to use your namespaces
The next step states the following:
Update realmRoot.ldif to use your namespaces, including the dn, dc, o, orclsubscriberfullname,
and memberurl attributes in the file. If you have a DN mapping between Active Directory and
Oracle Virtual Directory, use the DN that you see from Oracle Virtual Directory.
The realmRoot.ldif file is located in ORACLE_VIRTUAL_DIRECTORY_HOME/eus,
where ORACLE_VIRTUAL_DIRECTORY_HOME represents the location where Oracle Virtual Directory is installed.
The realmRoot.ldif file contains core entries in the directory namespace that Enterprise User Security queries. The realmRoot.ldif file also contains the dynamic group that contains the registered Enterprise User Security databases to allow secured access to sensitive Enterprise User Security related attributes, like the user's Enterprise User Security hashed password attribute.
Load your domain root information in the realmRoot.ldif file into Oracle Virtual Directory using the following command:
    ldapmodify -h Oracle_Virtual_Directory_Host –p OVD_Port -D cn=admin -w Admin_Password -v -a –f realmRoot.ldif
When I run the ldapmodify command I get the following error:
    add dc:

    domain
    domainDNS
    adding new entry DC=testldap,DC=local

Did you ever get your questions answered about the realmRoot.ldif file? Did you manage to configure a successful integration of OVD with EUS? I am battling with trying to get Oracle Virtual Directory integrated with Enterprise User Security, but every step I take in Chapter 7 of the OVD manual fails in some way, and the instructions are often vague. I am not sure how to modify the realmRoot.ldif file. Is there any improved documentation on this? I have logged a Service Request, but not getting any help. Any resources or documentation you know of that provides better guidance would be much appreciated. I am way behind my schedule now and this is a very frustrating exercise.
    Thanks.

  • Help needed with using network disk with iMovie with NFS or AFP

    Hi,
I have iMac with iMovie08 that talks to a remote disk hosted under Linux over a gigabit network using SMB (Samba). It all works ok and I have done a few movies.
Now, I have done some tests with NFS and AFP (AppleTalk) and it seems that these are much faster than SMB.
I then stopped the Samba server and proceeded to setup NFS and also AFP
    First NFS,
So I then exported my directory using NFS and I can see everything from my Mac (correct permissions too since I made both user and group IDs the same...). The problem is that when I launch iMovie it shows me the Volume for my external networked disk but it shows it with a little triangle with yellow exclamation and it does not show any of the events (>500GB of events).
If I stop NFS and then switch to AFP I get the same behavior. That is, everything from the Mac works on the AFS mounted disk (copying files back and forth, etc....) but I can't see the contents of the disk from within iMovie
I changed permissions so that anybody can read/write/execute (although there are files that have an '@' sign at the end when I do ls -l on them and I can't remember what that means....)
If I stop NFS and then go back to SMB (Samba) then I am back to a working configuration.
Can I use NFS or AFP with iMovie? What exactly does the yellow triangle mean?
    Thanks

  • Built-in iSight Camera with iMovie

Since my upgrade to Mavericks, I've never been able to use the camera from my Macbook in iMovie. Because when I wanna import video (or record), it says "No Device Connected." Is this a problem? Thank you in advance.

    You're welcome,bimmerfan
I understand your frustration, but with the software changing and improving so much all the time, such problems are not uncommon. If you have one, in addition to importing video recorded on the camcorder, you can use a Mac-compatible DV camcorder that connects via Firewire as your direct recording source with iMovie HD 5.
Another alternative cheaper than upgrading your iLife would be to record with the latest QuickTime Pro and then import the QT file into iMovie HD 5 for easy editing.
    BTW, Thanks for the !
