Incredibly slow browsing despite line speed of 3.5...

For about the last week I've had incredibly slow browsing. When I run the BT speed checker it comes back at between 3.5M and 4M. It's like the data is broken up into chunks which are separated by a lot of time. It's like the bad old days of dialup.
The speed tester comes back and said
download speed was 3692Kbps
range 1000-7150Kbps
DSL connection rate 4672Kbps downstream and 888Kbps upstream
IP profile 4000Kbps
Best Efforts 11.51:20.86:67.63
Are there any other tests or web sites, I should visit to try and establish what's going on, before I bite the bullet and report it as a fault?
I'm running Windows XP on a homehub 1 connected with an Ethernet cable and IE8

Sorry I didn't reply straight away it got so bad I couldn't do anything, so I reported it as afault.
I was told there was a fault in the exchange and someone would call me.
No-one has called me back,  but overnight the problem seems to have gone.
The current stats are below, but I don't know what they mean.

  • Normal download speeds, incredibly slow browsing

I've got an airport extreme that I've been having problems with. I get some pretty fast download speeds when downloading a file from Safari or Firefox, anywhere between 150kb/s and 300kb/s. However, my internet browsing speed is at a crawl. It can take between 30 seconds and 1 minute to load Apple's homepage whether I'm using Safari or Firefox. Can someone help me out with this? Are there some settings I need to change? Thank you!

I was having the same problem as you. I recently (tonight) installed a new Extreme N and was noticing that this was happening.
Even Google's website was taking a while to load. What I did is changed the DNS servers from AT&T's to public ones. I'm using 4.2.2.1 & 4.2.2.2 and this seems to have corrected the problem. Browsing is back to normal speeds, but I'd be skeptic to call this a "fix", since it's been about 20 minutes since I made the chance, so I'm not sure if this will really fix it, but if you want to try it you've got nothing to lose.
Let me know if it helps!

  • Incredibly slow Browsing in finder over VPN

I VPN into my work server - I'll be honest I don't know what server setup they are using other than it is Windows based - regardless, I get wonderful speeds browsing on an XP box but dismal if not Finder Killing speeds on my Mac just trying to get a directory listing - forget about transferring files. Often I have to relaunch the finder just to get back into browsing local files. The odd thing is that going through to the network share via terminal seems to be about 300x times faster.
Browsing Internet through VPN seems normal enough, I can share music easily enough and email seems fairly robust, but any SMB share is slower than molasses. I have searched and searched for almost 2 hours now and tried pretty much every solution I found - nothing has worked. Duplex settings, ipV6 settings, hacking the smb config files etc. Nothing. Is anyone else running into this issue? I use the latest CISCO VPN client BTW - given to me by my admins at work.
I know I have been less than informative on the server configs - I will grab what I can from my network admins tomorrow to see if that sparks any more ideas as to the issue. Any help is appreciated - I may just go nuts

For ressources to appear automatically in the finder you normally have to be in the same LAN which is not the case if you connect via VPN. If your Mac Mini is running OS X Server you should be able to configure Wide Area Bonjour which can be activated in your DNS configuration. In addition to that, in you VPN network configuration on the client you should use your server DNS address (an not the one of your ISP). Only your DNS on your server knows about your local services and can broadcast them to your client. It's what I believe the MobileMe service does when you configure it appropriately.
That should be the theory. However, I didn't manage to get this into work anyway. I wonder if anyone has.

  • E4200: incredibly slow wired-to-wired speeds?

    Using 1.0.03.
I am seeing something pretty bizarre: when trying to copy files between two computers (both Windows 7 SP1 64bit), both physically plugged into the back of the E4200, I see extremely slow transfer speeds: 1.0-1.1 MB/sec.  Both computers are fast (i7-2600K, both using SSDs) and both have gigabit ports (and the 4200's web UI shows both ports in question as operating in gigabit mode).
Has anyone else seen this?  This is so slow as to be sort of funny.  Each of these computers see speeds well in excess of that when transferring between the computer and outside internet sites...so it's kind of funny that two computers plugged into the same switch in the back of the 4200 see 1 MB/second.  Any ideas?

This has me curious.  No, I haven't seen this.  How are you copying between systems?  Are you using a homegroup, or have both systems in the same workgroup and are sharing files and/or folders or what?  If both of these computers can access the internet, they should have full access to each other at the same or higher speeds if the Windows is configured properly.  For example, I can copy from one computer connected to my router to an external hard disk connected to the other at about 21MB/sec (using eSATA).
So if you have these two systems configured so that they can share folders and files, then this should just work.
I guess the first thing I'd try is resetting the router and power-cycling it, and see if that straightens things out...to reset it, press the recessed "reset" button on the back of the router and hold it in for about 30 seconds, then power-cycle it by pulling out the power cord for about 30 seconds and plugging it back in.  As a resutl of doing the reset, you'll have to reconfigure the router (re-enter your settings) since the reset changes all the settings back to factory defaults.

  • Extremely Slow USB 3.0 Speeds When Transferring Large Amounts of Video

    Hi there,
I am transferring large amounts of footage (250GB-1.75TB chunks) from 5x 5400rpm 2TB drives to 5x 7200rpm 2TB drives simultaneously (via 6x USB 3.0 connections and 4x SATA III, with copy/paste in explorer) and the transfer speeds are incredibly slow. Initially the speeds show up as quite fast (45-150mb/ps+) but then they slow down to around 3mb/ps.
The drives have not been manually defragmented but the vast majority of the files on each are R3D video files.
I am wondering if the amount of drives/data being used/sent is what is causing such slow speeds or if there might be another culprit? I would be incredibly appreciative to learn of any solutions to increase speed significantly. Many thanks...
    Specs:
    OS: Windows 7 Professional
    Processor: i7 4790k
    RAM: 32GB
    GPU: Nvidia 970 GTX

If the USB ports are all on the same controller, they share their resources, so the transfer rate with 6 ports would be max 1/6-th of the transfer rate with 1 USB port if we disregard the overhead. Add that overhead to the equation and the transfer rate goes down even further. Now take into account the fact that you are copying from slow 5400 RPM disks that effectively max out at around 80 MB/s with these chunks and high latency, add the OS overhead and these transfer rates do not surprise me.

  • Firefox works incredibly slow (as in the window is barely functionable, not anything related to bandwitdh speed) when I'm running certain games on my computer.

    Hello,
During the past month i have had a strange problem with my Firefox browser in certain situations. The issue is only apparent when running certain 3D games (Most frequently when I run Diablo III). Whenever these games are loaded my Firefox browser will work incredibly slow. This is not an issue of a bandwitdh problem or such, the loading speed is fine, but the actual mouse clicks, bookmark clicks, keyboard inputs etc. take several seconds to register.
I have tried running Firefox in failsafe-mode which immediately made the problem go away. However, whenever I run it in regular mode the problem will be back even if I disable every single addon and plugin. I have also tried reinstalling both firefox as well as my addons and flash player, the issue stays.
For what it's worth, any other browser I have installed does not experience the problem at all (despite having the same few addons installed - I only have 3 of them).
Does anyone have a clue what the issue might be? Does the failsafe-mode inactivate anything besides the addons and plugins listed in the addon-section?
    Thanks in advance

  • Incredibly Slow broadband Speed

Hi, I'm servering from a Incredibly Slow broadband Speed and can't nail the reason why.
The broadband for my street was down for a whole weekend although box said connection was ok - helpline was no help - just said try again tomorrow. Now we have internet but the speed is very very slow - speed test results are :
    Download = 53 kps
    acceptable range = 100-250 kps
    DSL Connection Rate 486 Kps (Down-Stream), 712 kps(Up-Stream)
IP Profile for line = 135 kps
    Upload = 541 Kps
    Addition Hub Info:
    Noise Margin (Down/Up) = 8.5 dB / 6.7 dB
    Line Attenuation (Down/Up) = 63.8 dB / 35.8 dB
    Output power (Down/Up) = 1.3 dBm / 1.1dBm
Prior to loss of service, my speeds although weren't great were about 1.2 Mps
I've tried all the suggestions like changing channels, filters etc and nothings change in my house since the degrading of service.
    Can someone please help !
    Best regards

I don't know if this will help, but I do notice that your output power is only 1.3dBm / 1.1dBm.  can I ask you to look on the back of your home Hub and check to see if it is a Type A or Type B, this will be on the label in the bottom right corner.  If it is a type B Hub then ring and ask for a Type A Hub as I have found that I get a better output power reading of around 16.0dBm.  When I was sent out a relacement Hub when mine went wrong they sent out a Type B and my speed went very slow, so I put the original Type A  Hub back on to see if it made a differance and my speed increased and my IP Profile went up.  So if this is the case, ring up tech support and don't ask tell them that you wont a Type A replacement Hub.  All the best in your efforts and don't forget that the more you insist the more you can achieve.

  • Incredibly slow speeds

    Hello
For the second day running I'm experiencing incredibly slow speeds on my option 3 broadband package.
My Homehub says my downstream is connected at 283kbps, and my upstream at 440kbps. Normally my downstream is 8000kpbs or so
I spent a very very long time on the phone to BT yesterday, who told me a variety of different things, but nothing that resolved it.
Can one of the mods have a look for me please?? I don't know how it'll ever get fixed otherwise!!

BT Speedtester says: Your configured download throughput speed for this service is 250 k
Download speedachieved during the test was - 117 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 50-250 Kbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :282 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 440 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 250 Kbps
The throughput of Best Efforts (BE) classes achieved during the test is - 7.69:24.79:67.52 (SBE:NBEBE)
These figures represent the ratio while sententiously passing Sub BE, Normal BE and Priority BE marked traffic.
    There's something massively wrong here...
I'm pretty good with figuring out computer things. Of course, I've done all the usual, restarting the hub, swapping the microfilter etc.
Initially I thought I may have been capped, but the helpdesk told me this wasn't the case. My download rate is exactly 28kb/s, not a kilobyte over or under which would indicate some form of limiter applied...
I really need the net functioning correctly today and tomorrow, as I'm working from home... obviously BT's timing is perfect
Hopefully someone from BT will see this and take a look for me?

  • Slow Browser (Safari) Speed Since Upgrading to 10.8

Hello- I upgraded to Mountain Lion from Lion last week. I have noticed a signficant slow down in browser performance since upgrading. Very slugish now. I noticed it immediately, but thought I'd give it time and different internet connections. Nope... still very noticeable.
Problem: Slow browsing speed since going from 10.7 to 10.8
Setup: 10.8.5 with latest safari, MBair 2012 w/SSD and 8GB ram - Plenty of disk space
What I've tried: Fixing permissions, cleaning cache, reseting safari, cleaning cookies, DNS (open vs. google vs. standard)
    Any advice? Thx.

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them.
    1. Have you restarted your router and broadband modem since you first noticed the problem? If the answer is no, do that now and see whether there's any change.
    2. Are any other web browsers installed, and are they the same?
    3. What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
    4. Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they affected?
    5. If you can test Safari on another network, is it the same there?
    6. If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?

your router usually directs name resolution requests to bt dns servers
these convert web addresses that you type into numbers that the internet needs
bt dns servers are usually poor which could be responsible for the problems you have but the router doesnt allow you to change them
however it is possible to override them in the network settings of the pc

  • File browsing incredibly slow in shared folders

I posted about this yesterday, but I have a little more information.  Ever since upgrading to Mavericks, my Mac is *fantastically* slow browsing local folders which are shared.  This is paricularly true for embedded browsing, like from Facebook or MS Office.  For example, my Pictures folder is shared, and if I go to insert a photo from a file in PowerPoint, it takes a full *45 seconds* for finder window to open. Once it's open, it takes roughly 10 seconds to navigate from from one directory to another.  It's really madenning. Once I get out of the shared folder, everything is lightning fast again.
I've temporarily solved the problem by turning off sharing on the Pictures folder, but I like to access it from my other computer, so I'd like to fix the problem. This all worked fine before I upgraded (from 10.6).
Any advice would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Figured it out (or at least found a fix).  The folder was marked as shared, but somehow filesharing had gotten turned off during the upgrade.  I reenabled filesharing, set the folder back to shared, and everything works perfectly again.

  • Slow line speed

I have been checking my line speed since June 1st. It varies from a pathetic 104Kb/s to a not particularly good 728Kb/s. It is about 720Kb/s for periods as long as 5 days or so but slips back to 480Kb/s and is not about 136Kb/s.
My Option is 2 and I pay the same as users who get 20Mb/s. I would be very happy if I could get a reliable 1Mb/s so I could watch YouTube without having to go and make coffee all the time. On one occasion the speed measured a dazzling 984Kb/s. If this figure is real why is it that the usual speed is so poor and variable?
The Hub Manager claims a Download Speed of 736Kb/s and Upload of 448Kb/s which is totally inconsitant with Broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk which normally shows a faster Upload speed than Download.
I viewed BT's own You Tube clip about 'Home Wiring' which is 2:04 mins long. It took 11 minutes to download!
I have exhausted all the normal home wiring checks etc. What do I do now?

Try and post your linestats ....  and a BT speedtest.

  • Slow browsing, timeouts and pages failing to load

    Hi,
Over the last few days we've been having browsing issues on multiple devices where pages are taking forever to load if at all. We're sometimes having to refresh the browser 3 or 4 times to get a page to load correctly.
Sites like speedtest, once I've got it to load show low ping speeds and the Upload / Download speeds are what I would expect on our line. I've rebooted the router and modem but this hasn't resolved the problem.
    Please advise.
    Regards
    Neil.

Hi i would just like to add to this as i have been having the exact same issues in the last around 5 days, if i look at my speeds on speedtest they are as good as they usually are but problems with not loading pages instantly disconnections from certain services but not others for as little as 5 seconds and general slow browsing has started to become incredibly annoying especially when it seems to come out of nowhere.
