Incredibly slow rendering when editing raws from the new Nikon D800

I would be happy to hear from users of the D800 and Apple's "Aperture" 3.2.3. My own experience is that the rendering of f.inst. a "burned" file/picture (Raw-file) is incredibly SLOW....what is your experience. Any knowledge of whether Apple will come forward with an upgrade of Aperture?

I am fully aware of all about the file size, and that one should expect a slow down in the rendering, but this is really a significant slow down, and unless Apple come up with a solution I am afraid that one is obliged to find other solutions for the editing of Nikon D800 raw files. My details are:
MacBook Pro Intel
OS: Mac OSX, 10.7.3 Lion
Installed memory: 8GB
You have not described which MBP CPU/GPU, drives SSD/HDD, how full any HDDs are. That is essential information.
As all the photo sites have discussed, the D800 files are huge and will require more horsepower to handle. With a new D800 you are the experimenter here on the bleeding edge of technology, so all of us will learn from your observations.
I would guess that only the strongest Sandy Bridge MBPs with 8-16 GB RAM will do well. I was doing fine with 8 GB RAM (zero page-outs) and then recently I did some very aggressive Photoshop/Aperture work and page outs skyrocketed: I need more RAM, and I don't have a D800 yet so my NEF files run only ~20 MB each. How large (MB) are your NEF files?
You can evaluate whether or not you have adequate RAM by looking at the Page Outs number under System Memory on the Activity Monitor app before starting a typical work session; recheck after working and if the page outs change (manual calculation of ending page outs number minus starting page outs number) is not zero your workflow is RAM-starved. Ignore page ins, the pie charts and other info in Activity Monitor.
If your test shows that page outs increase at all during operation it is affecting performance. You can
• add RAM as feasible
• restart with some frequency if you suspect memory leaks (common especially with less-than-top-quality applications)
• and/or simply try to run only one app at a time, for sure diligently closing unneeded apps like browsers
• and/or switch 64-bit operation to 32-bit operation (which will make some additional RAM space available). Note that your Mac may already default to 32-bit. See Switching Kernels:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4287
Note that RAM is cheap and heavy apps' usage of more RAM is a good thing. Photoshop for instance has been able to under OS X take advantage of up to at least 32 GB RAM for years.
Thanks for sharing your experiences.

EDIT: Note my focus on discussing RAM above is because that is all we know about your MBP. It does not mean that I necessarily suggest that RAM may be your primary issue.

  • Cannot open my NEF files in Photoshop CS6 from my new Nikon D800 camera.

That's it, I Cannot open my NEF files in Photoshop CS6 Camera Raw from my new Nikon D800 camera. What am I doing wrong or what is wrong? I have the plug-in Camera Raw 7. and can open TIFF files but not the NEF files.
    Peace,

    Hi ssprengel,
to explain the scenario, i am basically a D7000 user and I do post production with Windows computer. But for an assignment I have hired D800, they have provided me their SD memory card. I have used the same memory card while shooting.
I have transferred the NEF files from the camera using Nikon software. The transfer was successful but i am not able to open the Raw NEF file with ACR. Even my plugins are updated till date.
The NEF thumbnails are having small lock logo in the bottom left corner. I do not know what does that mean. Like this.
Kindly let me know what would be the prob? if my RAW files are corrupted kindly let me know how will I recover them?
    Thank you.

Raw files from the new Nikon D810 will not open with either Photoshop CS5.1 or Lightroom 4.  When will a real Adobe solution be available to work with Raw (NEF) files in their native format, using CS5.1 and LR4?

Clarification: this is a user forum; you are not addressing Adobe here.
The answer to your question as phrased is: never.
CS5 is history and it is not longer supported.  There will not be any updates or bug fixes for CS5.
You need to convert the raw NEF files from your D810 to raw DNGs using the free, standalone Adobe DNG Converter 8.6 RC (beta), the first version ever to support that camera..

Current CS6/Cloud user but have not been able to process my NEF files from the new Nikon D4s camera.  Any idea on when and if a patch or new plug-in supporting this camera will be available?

Support for the Nikon D4S has been added to the forthcoming Camera Raw 8.4 which is currently in a late stage beta (formally called Release Candidate).

You can download it now and take it for a spin. Does not work on Mac OS X 10.6.x, Windows XP or Vista.

Elements 11 states that it does not support the camera raw from my new Nikon D600 and that I should go to "the Camera Raw help documentation." When I click on the help menu I get a message from my browser stating that it is a dangerous website. Now what

Unfortunately it was clicking on Updates that brought the “dangerous website” pop-up, but several hours later I tried again for the umpteenth time, and it worked! I am so glad because I am working on a project with a deadline.
Thanks for replying. Maybe if someone else has this problem they could be told to wait a few hours and try again.
The main option on the ‘dangerous’ pop-up is a “Get me out of here!” button, which I always clicked. There are options to go to the website anyway, but I am too leery of the web to do that. Now that I know it’s possible to reach the update center without risk I will never consider it.
    Thanks again,

Does Lightroom 4, or Lightroom 5 support Raw format from the new Nikon Df camera?
    Can anyone please tell me?
If not, is there a way for me to get the photo's in to Lightroom in another manner?

LR 4 no. LR 5.3 support added. If you have used an earlier version of Nikon software to download the nef files to your computer this may have made the files unreadable in Lightroom.

I have a new Nikon D810 camera. My new iMac cannot open the NEF/RAW files from it...Anyone have any knowledge of this?

If you will take the time to send Apple feedback, they will add RAW support - when I got my Canon, it wasn't supported either. I filed feedback and, two months, later, there was an update which included my camera model.

I reluctantly switched to the New Improved Yahoo Mail yesterday, from Yahoo Classic, every time I sign out Firefox crashes and I get an error message. I have filled out the information and selected restart or quit, and another error message says that the report could not be submitted. I resisted converting to the new Yahoo, all their other upgrades did nothing for me.

I have exactly the same issue. Reluctantly switched to New Yahoo Mail, downloaded latest firefox as of 13 Sep 2011 and every time I try and sign out of Yahoo it crashes. I'm also using a Mac Book Pro. Is there a fix yet?

  • Camera Raw for the New Nikon 810

Shot with my new Nikon D810. Updated from Photoshop CS6 to CC and my Bridge to CC thinking I would be able to open the NEF (RAW) files. Is the Nikon D810 supported yet?
    Thanks!

Is the Nikon D810 supported yet?
Not officially yet since it is so new.
However you can download and manually install the Camera Raw 8.6 Release Candidate (a sort of post-beta, pre-release version) which includes D810 support. Use at your own risk until Raw 8.6 is final.

  • Aperature can't read RAW files from my new Nikon D800. Help?

My Aperature is version 3.2.4 and I have done all the software updates.  I shoot in both JPEG and RAW, but aperature can only read the JPEG's.  Can anyone help?

The Nikon D800 raw support was included in "digital camera raw update 3.11", and that is the only one that I cannot find online any longer.
The raw support for Nikon D800 has now been moved directly into the latest MacOS X Releases - for MacOS X 10.7 it is built into MacOS X 10.7.4 or later, see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4757
and for Mt. Lion it is included in all releases, see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5371
But according to this list: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3825, if you are still using Snow Leopard, you will need the raw support from "digital camera raw update 3.11". What is the latest raw support you installed?

However, it opens camera raw files from my D300 without problems.
Same for Bridge: NEF files are displayed as generic thumbs.
    Can anyone help me?

I don't use the Nikon software, but I believe that the latest version of Nikon Transfer works fine. I think it comes with ViewNX2, which is a free download, AFAIK.
I personally download my photos using a card reader and Adobe Bridge (which comes with Photoshop, and contains Adobe Photodownloader).  Not sure, but I think it's included with Lightroom & Elements too (but I don't use those either).  Using Photodownloader has the added advantage of being able to add metadata at the same time.
