Incredibly stupid question from someone who should know better....

Does the audio interface make a difference in the quality of the burn itself? This burn would be AFTER the material was recorded mixed etc. WITH the interface in Logic. I have moved my Duet to another studio temporarily but have to re-burn a disc for duplication, so no Duet. My feeling is that it shouldn't matter but it's important so want to check. Again, the Logic files have been done, bounced, etc. using Duet, this non-interface method would just be for the burn. Thanks,

No, the audio interface need not be present.
Hmmm.. are you speaking of burning within Logic or from a secondary program like Waveburner? If there could be any difference, it would be with the audio driver rather than the physical interface and I'm sure Logic's built-in driver is solid. I don't think it makes a lick of difference anyway since you've already mixed and bounced.

hello all,
i am very new to java and i am trying to build a j2ee application...
rite now....i need to let my app communicate w/ an outside program thru' XML..
i had just learnt many thing about java w/ xml and i decided to use the XMLEncoder... it seems quite simple to use...BUT i have no idea on how to send/receive these XML files...i had thought of using socket connection, but i just found out that an EJB wouldn't allow socket networking... i bet this must be quite a stupid question coz i found nowhere teaching me this...=P
if u know about this, pls point me to some relevant docs / sites....i am anxious to learn about it...

In a Messaging system you will need message producers, and message consumers. To enable two-way communication, you can setup both the EJB and the client to handle both. When a message arrives at the consumer (or subscriber if you like), the JMS Service invokes the onMessage method. So you should implement your logic in the onMessage method, for example inspect the XML content, and act upon its content.

No problem, the amount of information to read can be quite overwhelming. Using JMS is just a suggestion, and might be considered overkill for your application. If you're using an IDE, like Sun ONE, creating a message driven bean is easy, and can be tried out, without too much hours passing.

Some dvi questions for those who really know there stuff!

Hi all, haven't lurked these forums in a few weeks but just had a quick question for those who wanna build up some "points". I'm trying to connect my MBP 15" (1.83ghz) to my Dell LCD 26" T.V. via DVI. Anyhoo, the DVI port on an MBP is a DVI-I (Dual link 24 + 5 pin) fenmale port while my Dell LCD sports a DVI-D (Dual link 24 + 1 pin) female port. Anyhoo, I went to my local Circuit City store and picked up a 6.6ft DVI-D (Single link 18 + 1 pin) male cable to hook both devices up. Should this work? If those have no idea what I'm talking about, I've included a link with a picture of allt he different DVI ports:

Am I missing something? Do you actually have a problem making this work? If the plugs you chose are mechanically compatible (and both are DVI D, dual-link), then there should not be a problem.
Ah. I see the concern. The extra four pins. I believe they make the connector able to supply hybrid DVI-A and DVI-D. The Mac output is hybrid so it can easily be adapted drive a VGA monitor, too.
I think you should be fine.
I have a ViewSonic 1600x1200 LCD monitor with a DVI (single) and it works superbly with the Mac.

What is workflow minimum? (stupid questions from rookie)

we are evaluating Oracle workflow. If you could help us to answer some of the stupid questions we have - it would help us a lot.
1. There are two parts of Workflow installation - DB and midtier. Is it possible to use workflow without installing midtier? Our understanding - midtier is used for providing web access for the users to the workflow engine: they can approve/reject, check workflow status etc. But is it possible to perform all these tasks via email only or by building some simple user interface in our existing webtier (which is not based on Oracle webserver, though is using Oracle for the DB layer)
2. We were not able to configure other schema to have access to workflow successfully - though it looks like this schema has all possible privs set. If we are trying to call wf_engine.LaunchProcess - we are getting privs error. If we call it from the workflow schema - everything is working fine. Does anybody have any successful experience in doing this?

I do not consider myself an expert at Workflow, but I will attempt to answer your questions (which are not stupid questions by any means)...
I will answer question 1 in two parts as it is essentially two questions.
1. "Is it possible to use workflow without installing midtier"
Workflow is a module inside the Database that is an optional installation.
No middle-tier needs to be installed as such.
The middle-tier I believe you are referring to is the Workflow Monitor, this is viewed by configuring either the:
- Database HTTP server DAD to display the Workflow Monitor
or
- Application Server HTTP Server DAD to display the Workflow Monitor
Configuring the Workflow Monitor for the Administrators is a very good idea.
Normal users do not normally need to view this page, but read-only acess can be setup (ie. the users connect as a user without the ADMIN role)

Using Workflow Notifications, emails can be sent to users where they can approve/reject.

I am not sure why you are not successful here... have you granted execute on wf_engine.LaunchProcess to the other schema?

No. There is no way around this. Without the credentials used to lock it, you can't use it at all. Return it to the person you got it from and get your money back. Failing that, turn it over to the police. There is a high likelyhood that it's stolen.

You can't.
Return the phone to whoever you bought it from and get a refund. Without the previous owners password you will not be able to enter your own iCloud acount, and when you update the phone, you won't be able to re-activate it as it will be locked to the previous owners account.
You should've checked the phone was not locked to someone else's iCloud account BEFORE buying it.

Question for someone who knows IOS

It is my understanding that Apple TV is an application that is on IOS, which is what Apple TV runs, similiar to what the other mobile apple devices run. This means it will be possible to run apple TV on other IOS devices as I think some have done unauthorized.
My question concerns future add-ons to ATV if ATV is essentially an just an app.
So lets say they wanted to add (Major League Baseball)MLB. Adding MLB (which is on the iphone and ipad now) will not be running a MLB app on ATV, instead it will be a complete change to the ATV app.
Is the above coreect?
In other words, Netflix on the ATV, is that an app running on IOS or is it part of the ATV app?

I found the answer.
Whenever you have an operating system it is made of 3 components.
1) The graphics user interface (GUI)
2) The core system
3) The thing that connects the two
Apple TV has a different GUI then the iphone, that is what you see when you turn it on, the main menu and how you navigate through your phone.
So what I thought what was the "Apple TV App" is actually the interface.
So....basically the TV can run the same apps if the app writers adjust them a bit so they fit the GUI of ATV. Currently the ATV has a youtube app and a netflix app and an itunes app, similiar to your iphone. You just interact with them through the ATV interface.

A few questions from someone new to Aperture (and DSLR photography)

Hi - I have just got my first DSLR camera (A Nikon D3000) and am trying out Aperture 3. I had a few questions which aren't all just necessarily Aperture related:
I have imported my library from iPhoto, however now all my albums are in alphabetical order, rather than date created. I only seem to have the option to arrange my albums by, "Kind", "Name" or "Manual". Any idea how I restore the date created order?
This may be too large a subject for here (I should probably buy a book on the subject), however JPEG, NEF and TIFF - I am shooting in raw mode which is generating NEF files. I had tried RAW+JPEG, but the basic JPEG this creates is really quite poor. The NEF files are generally around 7-12Mb. If I open them for editing in Photoshop, a TIFF file is generated in Aperture which looks to be over 8x the size of the original raw file, sometime over 100Mb. I then seem to be able to save it back as a JPEG at pretty much maximum quality which results in a file slightly smaller than the original raw file. Is it necessary to keep the large TIFF files once I've created a jpeg? Am I best off just keeping the finished jpeg and the original raw file in case I want to make changes?
When publishing to flickr, It would be good to be able to just publish the latest versions of all photos in an album. ie not the same photo in tiff, nef and jpg format. Is there an easy way to do this, or is it a case of manually picking each one?
Also - When uploading NEF files to flickr it would appear to convert them to jpg, which is kind of good I suppose, but does anyone know what level of quality the jpegs created are? Am I best off converting them to jpeg myself first and then uploading? If I did this then my albums would be full of duplicates in different formats, which leads back to my previous question about uploading just one version of each. That may be a question for the flickr forum...

You have jumped into the deep end with both feet.
With Aperture running select the single the Browser and you will find the sort controls under the Mobileme to New Smart Album icons depending on how stretched out you have the Inspector panel. There is the ability to sort by just about every parameter there either ascending or descending.
Can Aperture not convert your NEF files? You dont have to have Tiff files at all. See your Preferences regarding External Editor. How much storage space and your archiving requirements will influence your decision about retaining Tiff files.
I know nothing about Flickr but assume you will have to choose your own images. I doubt a Smart Album can select exactly what you need.
When uploading files online galleries generally optimise the images. You are wasting your time uploading massive Tiffs IMHO. Most web services work with jpegs I understand. Consult the Flickr help and support for their requirements and advice.

A few questions from someone considering whether to buy an Airport Extreme

I've spent the last couple of months grapping with an APPALLINGLY bad router from D-Link that has had more problems I can count on all my fingers and toes. I'm deciding between whether to replace it with kit from Netgear, Belkin or Apple. If anyone here who has Apple's net connection hardware could help me out with either of the questions below I would be most grateful and award points accordingly.
Q1.) What is the difference between the new 'AirPort Extreme Base Station' and an 'Airport Express Base Station with AirTunes'? I can't figure it out and am therefore unsure as to which I would need.
Q2.) It is essential for me that the access to the utilities or management interface (whatever you wish to call it) for the router is secure. I have a nightmare of a brother, who would do just about anything to be able to tinker with the settings to stop family members getting online everytime he gets annoyed with us, so it's essential that I can set up a password so only my dad and I can use it. Does Apple's gear allow this?

Thank-you so much, that table is fantastic for comparing things. At first I thought the 'AX' was a like a range booster or repeater, but as I understand it now, it can either act as a booster for a network using another router, or it can work as your main router itself.
I have concerns about the quality, reliability and lifespan of both the AEBS and the AX, as there are some bad reviews on the Apple Store pages, so that's a risk I'll have to weigh up against the Belkin and Netgear routers by having a look around online to see which ones seem to have the better track record. Nothing can be as bad as the D-Link, that much I know for sure.

1. Want some input about iMac vs Mac Pro (with a 27' monitor), which monitor system do you prefer?
2. I am Guru level in the Creative Suite but have little knowledge base for working with Aperature. Want some feed back about pros and cons of the workflow.
I'm also investing in X-Rite Color Suite for Print so that cameras, monitors, printers and projectors may be calibrated. I've used Gretag equipment for years and know profiling quite well. This is an important issue for knowledge about how profiles interface with Aperature.
I appreciate any and all comments.

You're spending a lot of money. I will add my 2¢ -- -- but you must, as I assume you know, fully research your options.
Environment:
Start with your workspace (inc. lighting) and your clothes.
Screen:
The iMac screens are lovely, but not, from what I hear, monitor-grade accurate. For critical color work, use NEC or Eizo monitors. I use NEC, with their SpectraView II software and an X-Rite ColorMunki photospectrometer. At the time, this was the least expensive color-calibrated workflow.
Printer:
Epson's are great, imho. I use a 3880 in my studio and rent a 9900 by the hour when needed. I have read of problems (iirc) with one of the printers in the 7000 line, however. The take-home lesson that I filed in my brain was, "If you're going to spend the money on the 7000 line, just get the 9000 line."
Aperture workflow:
Aperture is a fantastic workflow tool. Since you are adept with PS, you should set PS as your external editor. Use Apertures formidable tools for storing and organizing your Images, and its robust editing tools for either all your proofing, or all but your most demanding editing needs. That said, allow a good bit of time to get the feel of Aperture. It is not at all like Bridge. But your important choice is which RAW converter you want to use. There is, imho, no reason to use Aperture if you are going to use Adobe's (or anyone else's) RAW converter.
