Incremental backup and recover with UNTIL SCN options.

Hi there
My question is just about internal RMAN mecanisms.
Suppose i've cumulative method for backup with RMAN.
Reference backup provided by Level 0 (by night)
after that i've file001.arc, file002.arc during day
Baclup cumulative Level 1 (by night)
after that i've file003.arc, file004.arc, file005.arc during day
Baclup cumulative Level 1 (by night)
after that i've file006.arc, file007.arc, file008.arc, file009.arc, file010.arc, file011.arc during day
Baclup cumulative Level 1 (by night)
after that i've file012.arc, file013.arc during day
Baclup cumulative Level 1 (by night)
Suppose we need to recover with UNTIL SCN ... (incident can be identied by SCN #nnnnn, suppose SCN near of file008.arc).
Is Rman use benefits of incremental, or in this case (need to recover before particular SCN) systematically start with Reference backup (Created by Incremental Level 0) and then file001.arc, file002.arc ....
Platform:Oracle 10g

You recover using backup controlfile when you have lost the controlfile - should be obvious.
You recover until cancel when, for example, you want to manually see the archive logs being applied and decide when to stop recovering (maybe you have lost the archive log backups and want it to stop when you don't have any more left to apply).

  • Time Machine will not complete a system backup and terminates with "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume.  This follows a problem when Time machne terminated when the volume was almost full.

On 11/1/2011, Time Machine (TM) terminated with an error message I did not record.  I noted that the drive was full and decided to do a separate complete bootable  system backup using Carbon Copy Clone (CCC), before clearing the TM volume and trying to start it over clean.  Part way through the full system backup CCC put up a message that there was a Physical Problem  "Library/Application Support/Techtool Protection/McIntosh HD/Directory Backup 2011-11-01-16-28-16".  That was about the time that TM malfunctioned, so I assumed they were related.  After starting CCC over a couple of times, and getting the same error message, I let it go through to completion of the backup, which took three or four hours.  I then ran tests using Disk Utility and verified that there was nothing physically wrong with both the internal hard drive and the TM volume.  I also erased and reformatted the TM volume.  However, every time I started Time Machine, it would record a few GB and terminate with "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume".  I restarted the computer with no change in results.  Note that prior to starting the CCC backup, I "Repaired Permissions", "zapped the PRAM" and "re-set the SMC", hoping to have a clean bootable system on the backup.  I ran Techtool and no problems were found.
I'm running this on an Intel iMac under 10.5.8 and recording to a 500GB My Passport drive.  My hard drive is only about half full at 246 GB.  My assessment is that something happened at 16-28-16 on 11/1/2001 to screwup the Backup Directory in the file at "Library/Application Support/Techtool Protection/McIntosh HD/Directory Backup 2011-11-01-16-28-16". My question is, how do I fix it?
I had just completed writing everything above here, explaining the problems I had been encountering for the past 24 hours.  I had the Time Machine window standing open on the desktop where I could see it, having recentlycleared it after the last termination.  As I was proofing what I had written, I looked at the window and noted that the clock had started a new run for a full back up, since all prior efforts had failed and the TM volume was empty.  As I watched and waited for it to fail again, as it had been doing at about 13 GB, it kept going and going until it just finished a complete backup, about 4.5 hours later, with my having done nothing.  Now my question would have to be - what could possiibly have happened to make it perform this way?   It will be interesting to see if it continue to operate normally, or if the problem will return, in a later backup run.

You should not keep those files for long, and probably shouldn't back them up (if you need them at all -- since you do regular backups, I'm doubtful just how worthwhile that feature is).
"Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume".
One of Apple's maddeningly incomplete messages. Most likely, there's a problem with a file (quite possibly the one CCC didn't like).  See #C3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for details and instructions on finding and fixing it.
If you continue running the Directory Protection app, be sure to exclude your Time Machine drive from it (as it will just take up lots of room, and won't help repair your backups if there's a problem);  and exclude the folders it creates from being backed-up by Time Machine (as they'll create large backups, and you probably can't use the backed-up folders anyway), per #10 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

  • How do I backup and recover all of user's objects and Application?

I know that I can export the application ,CSS and images by HTMLDB.But there is not user's data. I can also export user's full schema by sqlplus. Can I recover all of user's objects like this:
    1,import the user's schema.
    2,create a new workspace and reuse the user'schema .
    3,import the application ,CSS,images.
    Then,Is all OK?
Thank for any help and option.

    Lastgod,
Yes, you can do what you described. You definitely must use Oracle export/import (or something) to backup and restore the data in the application schema. On the HTML DB side, depending on your purpose, you might find it simpler to export the workspace using the HTML DB site administration pages. Then you would import and install the workspace (using HTML DB admin pages), which will let you confirm the workspace schema, instead of your step 2. After that your step 3 can be performed. When you export a workspace you get the user accounts and group definitions also, so you don't have to recreate accounts when you import/install the workspace in the same or another HTML DB instance.

  • Up graded from elements 9 to 11 tried to run incremental backup and keep getting error

I keep getting error c:\ program data\adobe\elements organize\catalogs\my catalog\catalog pse 11 db. any help on this issue would be great.

That's not one of Apple's better messages, unfortunately.
Most likely, there's a problem with a particular file, but they don't bother to tell you that.
See #C3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Also note that, on Leopard, the restored drive will be treated like a new one, and Time Machine will do a full backup of it.  You cannot prevent that.    But if you meant 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard), it probably will figure out what's happened and do only an "incremental" backup of the changes.

  • Iphone 5 backup and sync with iTunes ..says i need more memory

I just bought more icloud memory for my iphone 5...because it said i needed 1.4 gb of space to backup... It would not let me sync my iphone on itunes.  I still can not back up..What should I do?  I guess no reason to buy that 10 GB from itunes.

You probably need more free space on your phone, not in your iCloud account.  (Additional iCloud storage doesn't increase the space on your phone.)
Check Settings>General>Usage to see how much available space you have.  If you need more and your music is in your iTunes library, delete your music by going to Settings>General>Usage>Music, swipe across All Music, tap Delete.  Then back up and sync with iTunes, and sync back the music you still want on your phone.

  • SOS: The Scenario of how to backup and recover RAC database

    Hello,
I am using the RAC system, but backup and recovery of the RAC system, still are implemented so far.
Who know how to use RMAN to realize the backup function for the RAC system? Please help me, thanks a lot first.

The fact your database is RAC has no practical effect on the backup procedures. There is only one database; you backup it up the same way you back up an exclusive database. Recovery is affected in that you will need to provide Oracle access to both archived log destinations or copy the logs for one instance over to the other instance archive log directory so Oracle can find them.

  • I have a 250GB western digital external hard drive for my time machine backups. if i just want to backup and recover my photos and movies how do i do that with time machine?

I have a 250GB western digital external hard drive for my time machine backups. I did not download the software that came with the external HD. If I only want to backup my photos and movies from my Macbook how do I do that in Tme Machine with my external HD?

Format the HDD in Disk Utility>Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and the open System Preferences>Time Machine and set up the external disk as the Time Machine HDD.  Then look at the Options, and exclude what you do not want backed up.
    Ciao.

  • Best Way to Backup and Work With Huge Photo Library and Several Locations

My friend has several hundred GB of photos using ACDC on a PC. He just bought a mac mini to make many iphoto books. He works out of 3 locations and carries several external hard drives to work on his iphoto books. He is interested in working on iphoto at several locations and saving each project (photos and albums and books) without being overwhelmed in large backup files. I need help in suggesting a solution.
One suggestion is to travel with his mac mini and external hard drives and archive his iphoto libraries after each project is completed thereby keeping only his working library on his mac mini. Another suggestion is to buy a mac mini for each location and transfer his iphoto library to external drives and take only these along. Another idea is to buy a laptop to replace his mac mini and take that along with the external hard drives. In either case he would have to save and create a new iphoto library periodically to avoid overflowing his mac mini or laptop hard drive. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

    Perfectly possible:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Back up to the 2TB drie:
    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

  • HT1766 I got my iPhone 5 replaced and had to backup and restore with the cloud, but all my apps started disappearing one by one??

I had backuped my phone before and after I got the iOS7 update. Then, I went to the apple store to change my phone for a new one because my old one had a hardware issue with the camera. It was all going smoothly until I saw each and every one of my apps disappearing one by one...The people at the store told me that it was because I had a bad backup (which could be caused by multiple reasons)??? So we tried doing it three times with different backup times, and this kept on happening. Why is this happening and what do I do to get my apps back, hopefully with the latest backup I had done prior to this disaster???? Please help!!

  • Faulty Backup and Restore with IOS Upgrade

I was upgrading the IOS on my wife's iPhone 4 yesterday.  I made one click to upgrade when iTunes recognized the upgrade was available.  The process then backed up the iPhone, installed the upgrade, and Restored from the backup.
When the process was finished the iPhone had not been restored to where it was before the upgrade.  Notes were not recovered and neither were text messages and other items.
I went back to attempt another restore thinking something had gone wrong and the last restore listed said "Date Unavailable".
I have no idea what happend and I made no choices other that to proceed with the IOS upgrade. Is there any way of determining information about that last restore and can I recover this missing data?

    Dear user52,
    Let me give an example.
    SOURCEDB> create table dept(deptno number,dname varchar2(10)) tablespace PRODDATA;
    Table created;
If I export this table from say some user and want to import to another database in user schema say USER52 and if either PRODDATA tablespace is present in destination database and USER52 does not have quota or PRODDATA is not at all present, then oracle will complain either by saying privilege not present to store the table or tablespace PRODDATA does not exist.

  • For .exe's and .msis with no silent option install

When packaging and installing executables and msi's with no silent install option, is the only recourse to enable interactive installation, or is there any other way to have it install, perhaps with defaults (next, next, finish etc.).
    Thank you

One additional comment here, all MSIs have a silent install option because that's a function of the Windows Installer. It's possible for bad MSIs to circumvent this by either using a custom action that displays some UI or calls something that in-turn displays
    UI.
As for exe's, if Installshield was used to build the exe, then you can create an .iss answer file as John pointed out.
I rarely see anything that can't be directly made silent. They do unfortunately exist though and your #1 option should be to contact the vendor and tell them their stupid, seriously (how will they ever know to fix it if someone doesn't tell them and relay
to them how problematic it is). Next you can try using AutoIT or you may have to repackage using AdminStudio or one of the other repackagers on the market.

  • Backup and synching with a Windows Server, what 3rd party software do I need.

I have a Macbook Air.  We just got a new Server, a Dell PowerEdge T420 running Windows Small Business Server 2011 CAL Suite.
I am told my Macbook Air will not Snych to backup files from a defined folder (like My Documents) and e-mail in Outlook.  Mac's can't do that.
I don't believe that is true.  Can anyone give me direction.  Is there some 3rd party software that allows Mac to do this?

    Hello Charlene,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
There are several ways you can pull the music off your iPod and onto iTunes. The first link below provides step-by-step instructions for the direct method if you have a PC as well as a few third party applications (for both the Mac and PC) if you choose to go that route instead. You can also do a simple Google search for "copy music from iPod to computer" and you should receive a number of sites that can help you out.
Just make sure that when you have your iPod plugged into your computer, that you don't hit "Erase and Sync" before completing the task of copying your music over.
Also, if you have any purchased music, you will probably have to re-authorize your computer by heading to the Store drop down menu and choosing "Authorize computer."

    Thank you

and I want to restore because there was failure , is it sufficient to restore the latest incremental backup or all the backup ?When you restore and recover, you do not specify levels, but you restore until a specified time, SCN, or log sequence number or cancel depending on the tool
So now it dependes how far in the past you want to go.
