Incremental backups taking waaaaaaaaay too long!

Recently, my TC backups using Time Machine have been taking much longer than normal. Even when nothing on my Mac has changed since the previous hour's backup, it normally takes 45 minutes or more, when it used to take just a few minutes. Nothing in my setup has changed in months, and I'm stumped as to what the deal is.

You can be fooled.
Here is a valuable App - [Time Tracker|www.charlessoft.com/TimeTracker.zip].
It will tell you for each backup exactly what was backed up and how much space was required. It will enable you to determine if there is something being backed up that was large which you didin't realize or whether you have another problem.

  • Finishing backup taking slightly too long!

    Hi;
Have had no issues with backups until today. The backups started at 7am, its now 12pm and its "stuck" on finishing Backup. Not sure if its normal. I downloaded the time machine widget, and this was the output:

Is there something I need to fix? Appreciate the info.

I'd suggest cancelling the backup if it's still running, turning off TM and selecting the "none" drive, and doing a +*Repair Disk+* (not permissions) on your TM partition, via Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities).
If that doesn't help, it's a bit of a long shot, but this may have to do with your Computer Name having unusual characters (’s ) in it's name.
Then change the computer name via System Preferences > Sharing. I'm not sure, but I think you also have to click the Edit... button and change to Local Host name, too. Avoid punctuation and spaces, too.
Then re-select your TM drive and try another backup. It will probably do a "deep traversal" (lengthy "Preparing" phase, and there's a chance it will then do a new, full backup.

  • Time machine backups take way too long

    Greetings,
Having trouble with Time Machine backups taking way too long. (No, it's not the first backup after some momentous event, as 90% of what I read about slow backups mentions; it's _every_ backup.)
20" iMac purchased Oct 2008. OS 10.6.8. 500 GB internal hard drive. 3 TB external backup drive. Was tested at the local "Genius" Bar, but they found nothing wrong with it. The best they could do is to recommend a restore from Time Machine, and if that didn't work, start clean and reload the OS and then copy my stuff back. I don't think so. I actually did a full Time Machine restore for a different reason, and it didn't help (except that I gained a few GB of disk space!).
My Time Machine backups now take about 39 minutes to complete. I have a 500 GB internal drive and this problem happens regardless of which external drive I use. (I have 3: 2 WD hard drives and one [noisy!] G-drive.) My current backup drive is a 3 TB WD drive with 2 TB of free space.
These are small incremental backups, typically about 35 MB. It doesn't take half an hour to copy 35 MB!
All phases take a long time, but the most irritating one is where TM appears to get stuck for a long time at the beginning and end of the copying phase. For example, at one point it will say something along the lines of Backing Up 7 KB of 34.4 MB. And it'll be like that for minutes on end. Later it will say something like 35 MB of 35 MB and hang there for minutes on end. During these periods the write I/O rate will go up and down, and CPU usage will often be very high (with backupd using 90 - 100%, in addition to highly elevated System CPU usage). In one particular backup the I/O write rate for one part of it looked like a heartbeat on an EKG! I should have taken a screenshot.
At the beginning during the Calculating Changes phase, backupd is using between 90 and 100% CPU.
There is also high CPU usage during the next phase, Preparing. And the number of items being prepared is in the thousands.
It always goes in two rounds because it finds that the root directory (/) has been modified.
I've Googled and searched Mac forums and found nothing useful. I started with a new .plist file and nothing's changed.
    Can anyone help? Thanks!
I wrote the above Jun 28. Yeah, finally getting around to posting it. Since then it's gotten worse. I now do a manual backup once a day and it takes almost an hour. I tried re-indexing Spotlight. No good.
Can anyone help? Again, this is not a "first backup." It is _every_ backup.
    Thanks!
    AEF

Thanks for your efforts. Here are my answers, comments, and further info:
I believe I have repaired permissions on my drive as part of my troubleshooting. And I'm sure I checked SMART status, which came up with a thumbs up, so to speak. I'm trying again. I don't see any useful messages in any logs on the console. I'm looking at "All Messages" and there is so far nothing useful. Oh, I think you must mean repair as in "Repair Disk," not "Repair Disk Permissions." I believe the "genius" at the Apple store did that or something just as good. The machine checked out fine according to them.
Checked SMART status just now: passed. Ran Quick Drive Test: also passed.
Oh, I installed "Time Machine Buddy". Occasionally, and only occasionally, I get a "deep traversal needed message" like this (I copied this from .Backup.log):
Running preflight for "Macintosh HD" (mount: '/' fsUUID: BF606E9A-5FD0-3B92-8D76-33DC63E7B2B1 eventDBUUID: 30DD929D-8982-46C2-BAE6-F0BD1E73916A)
            Scanning nodes needing deep traversal
            Node requires deep traversal: /Users/alanfeldman/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Database/apdb reason:contains changes|must scan subdirs|fsevent|missed reservation|
            Calculating size of changes
Should copy 2919 items (27.8 MB) representing 7116 blocks of size 4096. 546805181 blocks available.
Preflight complete for "Macintosh HD" (mount: '/' fsUUID: BF606E9A-5FD0-3B92-8D76-33DC63E7B2B1 eventDBUUID: 30DD929D-8982-46C2-BAE6-F0BD1E73916A)
Time elapsed: 1 minute, 39.000 seconds
But the vast majority of the time I do NOT get this message. But if there's something wrong with this apdb file, what can I do to fix it?
Note that there is usually, if not always, a lot of CPU activity or I/O (disk) activity, but not a lot getting done.

  • Installing OS X on a new hard drive taking way too long?

I switched out my old 250 GB hard drive that shipped with my MacBook Pro for a new 640 GB WesternDigit drive. I'm trying to use a Mavericks installer USB to install on my newly formatted hard drive, but it's taking way too long - I mean, I left it going overnight (about 7.5 hours), and when I came down, it wasn't even half done. Is there anything I can do here? I'd like to use my laptop. Thank you very much for any suggestions.

Do you have a internet connection? Even with a USB installer that if good and functioning properly you need an internet connection to Authenticate the install with your Apple ID.
If your old drive is still functioning you can connect it to your Mac with a SATA to USB adapter and use the Recovery HD on that original drive to reinstall Mavericks on the new drive.
If the drive is no longer functioning and you have no way of getting to the Apple internet download for Mavericks then you will need to start with an install of the original version of OS X that came on your Mac when new then update and or upgrade to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and then use the Mac App Store to reinstall Mavericks. There is not other way to do this. So save yourself some time and trouble and start fresh.
If your original drive is still functioning and it had Mavericks installed on it you can also CLONE that drive to the new one once you connect it to your mac with some type of SATA to USB adapter or enclosure.
If the Mavericks USB installer you have was made from a Mac that came with Mavericks pre-installed on it that will not work on your Mac.

  • Compressor 3 taking far too long to compress H.264

    Origianally posted this here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7328851&#7328851
But thought I would start a new topic.
Something is very wrong. I sent a 9 minute MPEG-2 file to Compressor to have compressed to H.264. (H.264 compression is what I would gather many of us are using Comp for in the first place).
I know Compressor can do H.264 comp at about 1.43:1 from tests. So a 9 minute clip should take, 6 minutes or so, and with Q Master it should be even faster. Well, Comp reports 8-9 hours. What the heck is going on.
I have taken MPEG Stream Clip and done the same H.264 output and it takes about 6-7 minutes. Something is up with Comp 3.
Now I have turned off Q Master, Reset the Comp 3 BG Processing, Quit Comp and relaunch, maybe reboot, possibly trash all prefs related to Comp.
    And still 8-9 hours?
A 9 minute clip should take 6 minutes and as I say, with Q Master, even faster, that is the point of Q Q Master services

Took me awhile to get Compressor going reliably but now it has been pretty solid.
I am not sure what settings you are using to encode (for instance Frame Controls can add alot of time), but 8-9 hours for 9 Minutes seems rather extreme. Note though that you are using an MPEG-2 (m2v?) file. You may be better off converting to another Codec or better yet go to the source material you are double encoding.
I just set up a Compressor setting on an Octo 2.8 with everything pushed to the Max on Frame Controls and set to resize a 6 Minute HD AIC stream down to H.264 @25% of the size of the original and sent out to "This Computer" and not the Cluster and it took 17 minutes or so. Even with converting from m2v it does seem like it is taking way too long on the machine for you.
I saw you had done some troubleshooting, but do you have any other details? Was his a clean install of the OS and Studio, or were there upgrades along the way? That caused some issues in the past - meaning between upgrades to Leopard and/or installing Studio 2 over Studio 1.

  • It's taking way too long for my messages to load.

Starting on Tuesday this week (10/14) it is taking way too long for my messages to load from my Gmail account. Once the message finally shows up in the Inbox, it's taking up to 10-15 min for the message to load where I can actually view the message. I'm going to have to move to another email application if this can't be resolved which is very unfortunate as I've enjoyed using Thunderbird up until now.

I guess I'm at least happy to know it's not just me. I've had to abandon Thunderbird for now. I guess I'll keep an eye out for future updates.

  • Message processing taking a too long time

    Hi,
I'm sending messages for a external party and a few days ago these messages are getting too long time do process.
Any idea where i can analyse ?
    Regards,
    Gustavo

    Hi Prado,
Request you to check the statistics for few days in Performance monitoring and analyse if the messages are taking long time only for this interface or it is happening for other interfaces as well.
check below link for performance monitoring
    SAP PI 7.1 Performance Monitoring
    1. if you are facing the issue with only this interface then you need to check the design and and analyse where and in which step it is taking time.
    2. if you are facing issue with other interfaces as well then you need to tune the system..here you might need basis team help.

  • Slideshow Taking WAY too long to load

I have a slideshow posted at
    http://olyrents.com/slideshow.htm
My client is saying it takes too long to load, and I am
finding that it is loading all of the photos first before you can
scroll through and view them. It's just not functioning properly.
I wonder if someone could look at the actionscript and give
me any suggestions? Maybe there's something else going on?
I have attached the script from the original fla file.
    Thanks!

That adds up to somewhere in the realm of 5MB, which isn't
going to be a quick load time, though it might be visually workable
if you separate the loading from the viewing.
One thing you might consider is doing away with the preloader
visual. With 65 images being interupted by 65 preloader screens, it
kinda defeats the potential aethetics of the images and may lead
one to think it's taking a long time to load them as a result.

  • Query taking way too long

    Hello,
    Can somebody please help.
I am wanting to change this query so that it does not take too long. How can I do it please?
    select count(*), t.tel_no, t.prospect_id, a.ACCOUNT_NO, a.account_title
    from tel_nos t, account a
    where t.tel_type = 'S'
    AND t.prospect_id = a.prospect_id
AND SYSDATE BETWEEN t.start_date AND NVL(t.end_date, SYSDATE)
    group by t.tel_no, t.prospect_id, a.ACCOUNT_NO, a.account_title
    having count(*) > 1
    Thanks in advance.

Tuning is a science not a parlour guessing game. It's hard for us to diagnose the problem you have here as you have given us almost no information. For instance, are you using rule based or cost based optimizer? How big are these two tables? What indexes do they have? What percentage of rows are you expecting the query to return?
Tuning is such a big area that it's hard to know where to begin. I suggest you start at the Oracle docs. Chapters 1, 4 and 5 will set you going.
    http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/A87860_01/doc/server.817/a76992/toc.htm
Having said all that you may well find this runs faster:
    SELECT count(*), t.tel_no, t.prospect_id, a.account_no, a.account_title
    FROM   account a, tel_nos t
    WHERE  t.tel_type = 'S'
AND    sysdate BETWEEN t.start_date AND nvl(t.end_date, sysdate)
    AND    t.prospect_id = a.prospect_id
    GROUP  BY t.tel_no, t.prospect_id, a.account_no, a.account_title
    HAVING count(*) > 1
/I leave it to you to work out why (it's nothing to do with clearer layout).
    Cheers, APC

  • Mail taking way too long to get to my iphone...Rogers network Toronto

Today, on more than one occasion I sent an email from my yahoo account to my .mac account. The email arrived within 2 minutes. I was online the entire time to verify. My iphone, failed to be notified within 30 minutes!! In actual fact, i don;t know how long it would have taken to get the email. The only way I managed to retrieve the email on my iphone was to select the mail application on the iphone and select "inbox". This forces the software to check for mail....This isn't PUSH at all.
    Is anyone else experiencing this.?
    Thanks
    B

the push services are only as good as the pusher I believe. I know my yahoo mail doesn't get pushed very well. Sometimes it's instant other times it's not. My girlfriend's email on a microsoft exchange server activesync is pushed pretty consistently. Given some of the hangups with the mobileme services, I'm not too surprised that the push isn't working great. It's really a mobilme issue I think, and I will let others with the service chime in with their experiences.

  • Backups Taking up too much space

All Timemachine backups stored on External HDD.  Storage info is still showing 80GB Backup files on Laptop.  How can I find and delete these backups so I free up space?

Those local Time Machine backups (which is what you are seeing) are supposedly deleted if OSX decides space is needed, and Finder doesn't count them (or at least tries not to count them--there are quirky issues) when it computes free space to show you, though most other utitlies will count them if you check disk space that way.  That includes using the About This Mac Storage Info button.
I do have some concern that on a mechanical drive (as opposed to an SSD) writing that data and holding it might create some performance issues (potentially creating fragmentation on the drive faster than normal due to having limited drive space for the OS to work with to find contiguous blocks to write to), but it should not impact the ability to store things out there--if you need the space, local backups are deleted.
That said, if you want to disable local backups in Lion, the following article on OSX Daily has the terminal commands to do so and to later reenable it.  The article does caution about the downside of doing so, but if you generally connect back to your external Time Machine drive on a daily basis and backups are always made the exposure may not be that great.  Now if you regularly travel and are away from the backup drive for long periods, the risks are a bit higher.  But you choose your own poison.
