INDD to PDF?

I have downloaded the INDD 30 day trial and want to save a mock-up of something to PDF. When I export the INDD file to PDF and preview it, the PDF appears blank.
Help?

Most common occurence for this type of event is that you may have accidentally placed all items on the Master Page.
Go to the Window>Pages
And from here you see a Panel and it's divided with a Line.
Above the Line are master pages - and below the Line are the pages in the document.
You should move any items on the Master Page to a Page in the document.
Hope that helps.

  • INDD to PDF: web-safe color palette?

    Context: currently, the Google Docs Viewer/Embedder, when used to display a PDF in a browser, heavily downsamples images in the PDF resulting in grisly color changes and posterization. This has been discussed for a long time elsewhere on the web (example) and is something Google might eventually deal with.
    I assume Google's intention was to hack down bandwidth usage, which I don't begrudge them, but the results stand out glaringly in an otherwise vibrant WWW. Embedded fonts work fine, and the only other visual/layout errors can be with some more advanced design effects—unless they are flattened down to Acrobat 5 compatibility.
    With the nasty color changes, what I believe I'm seeing is a re-processing of the images in the PDF with ye olde web-safe color palette. Or maybe its paleolithic predecessor. FYI the source PDF is unaffected. And FYI, yes, I am aware of  many other options for embedding a PDF in a web page; I'd like to try and solve this one.
    My thinking is this: if I can output my InDesign file such that images are converted more gracefully to a web-safe palette, and possibly with more satisfactory color dithering, then the results via the Google Docs Viewer/Embedder might be improved, more predictable, good enough for now.
    I know how to do this with Photoshop, and I assume it's a Photoshop engine working behind the scenes in/for InDesign when processing images, so I'm hoping this is attainable.
    Semi-educated guesses:
    That a suitable color profile could be created and selected when outputting either PDF or PS, resulting in 255-color (indexed) RGB images in the final PDF layout.
    That the long way is to make alternate versions of each image used in the layout, swap them (such as with relink to file extension, e.g. GIF for TIF), and output a version specifically for embedding.
    Thanks in advance for any creative thinking.
    Edit: it's looking like the limit is far fewer colors, possibly 16. Gross. But I'm still curious about the possibility of a method for this, as it could have other applications.

    After getting both your replies, I went back and experimented some more. I am creating a pdf for a b&w book interior, and it is setup as an ID book, with two files. I was trying to generate the pdf from the book.indb file without the individual book indd files being open. That resulted in the screen in my initial question.
    I went back and doubleclicked both of my book indd files and selected both, then generated the pdf from the book.indb file. This time I got the proper choices Document CMYK - U.S. Web Coated ....

  • Converting .indd or pdf to ifd or mdf format.

    I have built some forms in indesign and save as .indd files.  I can certainly export to pdf.  How can I save these or export them (build them) in .ifd or .mdf files.  I have someone that needs my forms in an old jet form format.  They have requested the forms in .ifd or mdc format.  Is this possible.  If so how do I build them?

    I have never heard about these file types nor aubout Output Designer but I did a look here:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/server/outputdesigner/overview.html (the links away from this page are broken, it seems to be very old.)
    It seems that you can export in different filetypes that are supported from Output Designer like PostScript or JPG.

  • Make adobe flash player the preferred player when exporting indd to pdf

    Hi, I am making a pdf using indesign.  After I export to pdf, the movie files in the pdf play automatically on quicktime (when I click on them). I need them to automatically play on adobe flash player instead.  I understand I can change the rendition settings for each object in the pdf, and make adobe flash player the preferred player, but there are a hundred videos in my pdf (avi files), it would take a long time to make those changes individually; it would be much easier if when i exported from indesign, they were already set as default to open in flash player instead of quicktime within the pdf.  Any ideas appreciated.

    The export is a function of InDesign. Post your question in the forum for InDesign.

  • Tagged INDD -- Tagged PDF

    Hi,
    I thought that when you tag all elements in an InDesign layout and then play with their order inside the Structure panel (in InDesign), this tagged order would be preserver when exporting into PDF activating the checkbox "Tagged PDF".
    But when I do so and open the PDF in Acrobat, then open de reading order panel, I find that this order does not match the one I set in the Structure panel in InDesign.
    The manual says it may do it, but I cannot find out...
    Anyone in similar situation that may help? Thanks

    UPDATE:
    I have spent a long time trying to find an answer to this to no avail. I have finally contacted Adobe Tech Support and explained the issue that concerns me and I have had a response from a senior expert on InDesign/Acrobat/Accessibility.
    The issue is as follows:
    When you prepare an InDesign document so that the generated tagged pdf is fully accessible for screen readers and the like (create TOC, include bookmarks, add document structure, tag untagged items, map styles to tags, tag uneccessary content as artifacts, include alt tags for images etc.) the bullets in bulleted lists cause the pdf to fail the Full Accessibility Check in Acrobat Pro. The full accessibility report will flag bullets as 'Inaccessible Page Content - the element is not contained within the document structure tree'. This is acceptable from the targeted end user audience (viz those with impaired vision using screen readers) because , as Acrobat states "Content that is not attached to the structure tree will not be available via assistive technology like screen readers." Well you don't really want the screen reader saying "Bullet" or similar everytime it comes across one, do you?
    The problem is that the pdf "fails" the full accessibility check and when you are being paid to create fully accessible pdf's, this scares the client somewhat.
    The solution:
    I explained the above to the Adobe expert and asked if there was an efficient way, in InDesign CS2, to tag all "bullets" as artifacts so that they would be ignored by screen readers AND be seen as artifacts by the Acrobat Pro Full Accessibility Checker and hence pass the check. His answer was NO. I said in the past I had tediously, laboriously gone through the documents in Acrobat pro and marked every bullet as 'background' (= an artifact) to make it pass the Full access checker successfully. Surely, I asked, there must be a simpler way to do this? No, was his answer! "It's extremely cumbersome... but it's the only way"
    Aaaahhh.

  • Converting indd or pdf to fif, xft, or idf

    Is there any software that can open/import an InDesign file or a PDF file and save/export it as an FIF, XFT, or IDF file that can be opened in Adobe Output Designer?

    I have never heard about these file types nor aubout Output Designer but I did a look here:

  • Why am I getting missing plugin error in CS4 Indesign when trying to open indd or PDF files?

    Any help would be appreciated?

    PDF files cannot be opened in InDesign.
    InDesign files which are not able to be opened might come from a newer version, you might ask for an IDML file, but better to upgrade to the same version.

  • Big problem with PDF export from CS4

    Create a document with facing pages. Then place a rectangle or any other object on the master through the whole spread. Place the text or any other object on the master over the first rectangle on the both pages. Now, when exporting pdf, the text on the left pages is disappeared becaouse it covered by the copy of the rectangle. The variation of the problem is when using any tansparencies, then they become "less transparent" on the left pages because of this strange dublicating.
    There is an archive in attachment that contains indd and pdf files with this problem.

    Thanks, it works, but bug is still bug. In some cases it's impossible to do this, for example my recent case: it was text with huge outer glow on master pages. Outer glow from right page dublicates to the left and covered left text, and there's no way to move effect to another layer separately. The solution was to detach these texts from masters, but it's also unhandy solution.
    It's hard to detect such cases unless it happen with big elements.

  • Unsearchable pdf created by incs4

    Using excel 2003, incs4, win7 prof, pdf creator & cute pdf.  In excel, I print a worksheet to pdf. I can copy and place text selected from this pdf. Text is legitimate.  I place that pdf into cs4. It comes in as a graphic.  Then I export the .indd to pdf. Anything inside a grid from the excel woksheet inside this final pdf cannot be searched for; with the text tool in reader, I select text inside a grid, paste it into another program: unrecognizable text (gibberish) Yet, a hard copy prints properly. I need to create a final 40 page .pdf that is completely searchable. (I thought I was finished with my project, only to discover this "unsearchability". I've been using pagemaker for a last umteen years, never had such an issue. Where did I go wrong? How can I correct this please?

    It´s really hard to say without seeing your files (orig indd and resulting pdf), but one possible reason could be transparency.
    If you have something that causes transparency flattening, it may convert all your texts to outlines during pdf-process, if you are using PDF1.3 as a target compatibility in your settings (or if you make your pdf by printing instead of exporting).
    On the other hand the fact that you still can copy/paste that text give a reason to doubt that you have a problem with character encoding. Did you try to use some other font, try some very basic font, like Times New Roman or Arial, export it again and check what happens...

  • Possible to generate xmp thumbnails for PDF files in Acrobat?

    Hi,
    Apps from the Creative Suite 5.5 allow to embed a tiny preview (as XMP thumbnail) when saving to some .ai .indd or .pdf file. However, I could not find the option in Acrobat X Pro.
    Such XMP thumbnails prove useful when visually browsing through PDF documents in Windows' explorer. I'm surprised Acrobat X lacks such a feature whereas other apps from the Suite do it fine.
    Please not I'm not talking about embedding page previews, this is a completely different topic.

  • [JS][CS4/CS5] Images dropping off in scripted pdf export

    I've encounted a bug that I wonder if someone could try to replicate or suggest a workaround of some sort for.
    Some background: we often need to batch-export a number of versioned InDesign files to pdf. These files will often share a lot of content, particularly placed images. We've used Peter Kahrel's export script for this purpose, as well as a number of scripts of my own. The specifics of the script don't seem to be important. I've seen the problem in both CS4 and CS5 on the Mac.
    The problem: Placed Illustrator files (and pdfs) drop off of exported pdfs, without any kind of error being raised, after a user tries to interact with InDesign while it's tied up during a script which opens and exports one file after another. Once an image drops off, it will be missing from every subsequently exported pdf until the script completes. The pdfs are valid—they open and display just fine—they just don't contain all the images they're supposed to. Placed raster images are not affected.
    If anyone cares to try to replicate this for me, the script I used to trigger it was:
    var f = File("/path/to/InDesign/file.indd"),
        d = Folder("/path/to/export/directory"),
        e = 0,
        i = 1000,
        doc, pdf;
    while(e++,i--){
        doc = app.open(f);
        pdf = File(d.fullName + "/" + f.displayName.replace(/\.indd$/,"") + e + ".pdf");
        doc.exportFile(ExportFormat.PDF_TYPE,pdf,false,app.pdfExportPresets.firstItem());
        doc.close(SaveOptions.NO);
    The InDesign file can simply be a single page with any (as far as I know) placed Illustrator file or pdf. I used an .ai file with one black rectangle in the middle of the page.
    After getting the export script going in the ESTK, I Command-Tab over to InDesign. As soon as I try to click on any UI element (which will get me a spinning beach ball), the placed vector image drops off of the exported pdf and stays dropped off until I stop the script.
    While the solution seems simple—don't mess with InDesign while it's batch exporting pdfs—it's easy to forget that it's tied up, and the consequences of an image silently dropping off of an exported pdf could be quite dire.
    Thanks in advance.
    Jeff

    edit: Did file a bug report (5th of december 2012)..
    It is just unbelievable that this bug still exists! absqua, have you filed a bug-report?!
    Easy to reproduce, just launch script and click any toolpanel header while indesign running script..
    test_document.indd includes those black rectangles in linked .ai file.
    Right after InDesign ui-element is clicked, that linked .ai is dropped from rest of exported pdf's.
    #target indesign
    var f = File("~/Desktop/test/doc/test_document.indd"),
        d = Folder("~/Desktop/test"),
        e = 0,
        i = 20,
        pdf;
    while(e++,i--){
              myDoc = app.open(f);
        pdf = File(d + "/" + " test_" + e + ".pdf");
        myDoc.exportFile(ExportFormat.PDF_TYPE,pdf,false,app.pdfExportPresets.firstItem());
              myDoc.close(SaveOptions.NO);

    The problem is, I never considered pages 0 through 99. The script works perfect for 138-140 TEST 10_WORKER.indd. It creates PDFs named:
    MyTest_138.pdf
    MyTest_139.pd
    MyTest_140.pdf
    If the document name is 098-100 TEST 10_WORKER.indd, It creates PDFs named:
    MyTest_98.pdf -  should be MyTest_098.pdf
    MyTest_99.pdf -  should be MyTest_099.pdf
    MyTest_100.pdf - This is perferct
    And of course, the double 0s, 008-010 TEST 10_WORKER.indd
    MyTest_8.pdf -  should be MyTest_008.pdf
    MyTest_9.pdf -  should be MyTest_009.pdf
    MyTest_10.pdf -  should be MyTest_010.pdf
    Why doesn't it use the first 0(s) in the name? 0 is a digit and every RegEx tester I've checked it with includes the zero.
    Any assistance with getting this script to use the leading zero if there is one would be greatly appreciated.
    Also, if there is a way to export each PDF from a multipage document which doesn't start with a number, it would be extremely helpful.
    Thanks in advance
    Danny

    The zeros aren't there because they never were there. Your loop starts at 0 and that could be a page number. To pad your page numbers to three-digit numbers, replace this line:
    myFilePath = myFolder + "/" + "MyTest_" + (my_suffix + myCounter) + ".pdf";
    with this one:
    myFilePath = myFolder + "/" + "MyTest_" + (my_suffix + pad(myCounter)) + ".pdf";
    and add the following function somewhere at the end of your script:
    function pad (n) {
        return ("00000"+n).slice(-3);

  • Problem Importing a PDF into Indesign CC

    We don't usually have this problem with InDesign CC, but this came at a very bad time and I'm not sure if it is a bug in InDesign CC or not. We were given a PDF from an auditor of a client to bring into their financial report. The strange thing is that we were only able to bring in pages on left pages, any page that was brought in on the right hand page did not show. In fact, if we copied a page that showed up on the left page and moved it to the right page, it would not show it.
    Fortunately we still have CS6 and we were able to place the same PDF with no problem. So we had to save the document into a CS6 format and then insert the PDF.
    I don't know what would have caused this, but we haven't had problems with other PDFs. It seems that there was something about that PDF that InDesign CC didn't like (but that CS6 was able to handle).
    Any ideas?

    I think we'd need to see samples from the actual .indd and PDF files to give you any real answers.
