What is the best data structure for loading an enterprise Power BI site?
Hi folks, I'd sure appreciate some help here!
I'm a kinda old-fashioned gal and a bit of a traditionalist, building enterprise data warehouses out of Analysis Service hypercubes with a whole raft of MDX for analytics. Those puppies would sit up and beg when you asked them to deliver up goodies
to SSRS or PowerView.
But Power BI is a whole new game for me.
Should I be exposing each dimension and fact table in the relational data warehouse as a single Odata feed?
Should I be running Data Management Gateway and exposing each table in my RDW individually?
Should I be flattening my stars and snowflakes and creating a very wide First Normal Form dataset with everything relating to each fact?
I guess my real question, folks, is what's the optimum way of exposing data to the Power BI cloud?
And my subsidiary question is this: am I right in saying that all the data management, validation, cleansing, and regular ETTL processes are still required
before the data is suitable to expose to Power BI?
Or, to put it another way, is it not the case that you need to have a clean and properly structured data warehouse
before the data is ready to be massaged and presented by Power BI?
I'd sure value your thoughts and opinions,
Cheers, Donna
Donna KellyDear All,
My original question was:
what's the optimum way of exposing data to the Power BI cloud?
Having spent the last month faffing about with Power BI – and reading about many people’s experiences using it – I think I can offer a few preliminary conclusions.
Before I do that, though, let me summarise a few points:
Melissa said “My initial thoughts: I would expose each dim & fact as a separate OData feed” and went on to say “one of the hardest things . . . is
the data modeling piece . . . I think we should try to expose the data in a way that'll help usability . . . which wouldn't be a wide, flat table ”.
Greg said “data modeling is not a good thing to expose end users to . . . we've had better luck with is building out the data model, and teaching the users
how to combine pre-built elements”
I had commented “. . . end users and data modelling don't mix . . . self-service so
far has been mostly a bust”.
Here at Redwing, we give out a short White Paper on Business Intelligence Reporting. It goes to clients and anyone else who wants one. The heart
of the Paper is the Reporting Pyramid, which states: Business intelligence is all about the creation and delivery of actionable intelligence to the right audience at the right time
For most of the audience, that means Corporate BI: pre-built reports delivered on a schedule.
For most of the remaining audience, that means parameterised, drillable, and sliceable reporting available via the web, running the gamut from the dashboard to the details, available on
demand.
For the relatively few business analysts, that means the ability for business users to create their own semi-customised visual reports when required, to serve
their audiences.
For the very few high-power users, that means the ability to interrogate the data warehouse directly, extract the required data, and construct data mining models, spreadsheets and other
intricate analyses as needed.
On the subject of self-service, the Redwing view says: Although many vendors want tot sell self-service reporting tools to the enterprise, the facts of the matter are these:
v
80%+ of all enterprise reporting requirement is satisfied by corporate BI . . . if it’s done right.
v Very few staff members have the time, skills, or inclination to learn and employ self-service business intelligence in the course of their activities.
I cannot just expose raw data and tell everyone to get on with it. That way lies madness!
I think that clean and well-structured data is a prerequisite for delivering business intelligence.
Assuming that data is properly integrated, historically accurate and non-volatile as well, then I've just described
a data warehouse, which is the physical expression of the dimensional model.
Therefore, exposing the presentation layer of the data warehouse is – in my opinion – the appropriate interface for self-service business intelligence.
Of course, we can choose to expose perspectives as well, which is functionally identical to building and exposing subject data marts.
That way, all calculations, KPIs, definitions, and even field names, and all consistent because they all come from the single source of the truth, and not from spreadmart hell.
So my conclusion is that exposing the presentation layer of the properly modelled data warehouse is – in general - the way to expose data for self-service.
That’s fine for the general case, but what about Power BI? Well, it’s important to distinguish between new capabilities in Excel, and the ones in Office 365.
I think that to all intents and purposes, we’re talking about exposing data through the Data Management Gateway and reading it via Power Query.
The question boils down to what data structures should go down that pipe.
According to
Create a Data Source and Enable OData Feed in Power BI Admin Center, the possibilities are tables and views. I guess I could have repeating data in there, so it could be a flattened structure of the kind Melissa doesn’t like (and neither do I).
I could expose all the dims and all the facts . . . but that would mean essentially re-building the DW in the PowerPivot DM, and that would be just plain stoopid. I mean, not a toy system, but a real one with scores of facts and maybe hundreds of dimensions?
Fact is, I cannot for the life of me see what advantages DMG/PQ
has over just telling corporate users to go directly to the Cube Perspective they want, that has already all the right calcs, KPIs, security, analytics, field names . . . and most importantly, is already modelled correctly!
If I’m a real Power User, then I can use PQ on my desktop to pull mashup data from the world, along with all my on-prem data through my exposed Cube presentation layer, and PowerPivot the
heck out of that to produce all the reporting I’d ever want. It'd be a zillion times faster reading the data directly from the Cube instead of via the DMG, as well (I think Power BI performance sucks, actually).
Of course, your enterprise might not
have a DW, just a heterogeneous mass of dirty unstructured data. If that’s the case,
choosing Power BI data structures is the least of your problems! :-)
Cheers, Donna

PDF PRINTING using Apache FOP and Oracle Containers for J2EE
Hi,
I am having major confusion about the pdf printing in Oracle XE and Apex 3.1.2.00.02
It clearly states that this is an available option on the Oracle website.
According to Apex there are two options for printing report regions.
Standard - which is free
Advanced - which uses BI and requires a licence
Standard requires me to have Apache FOP (which is provided by Oracle in the Apex release) and Oracle Containers for J2EE (OC4J)
Where my understanding of all this falls down is the part where I am downloading the Oracle Containers for J2EE and the license agreement states this cannot be used in a production system (only as a protptype). Can anyone clarify this? This is surely a required componenet and for the standard report printing which is supposed to be free.
My problem is that I need to have a database system on a laptop that will go off site for a number of weeks. We need report printing options.
Can anyone help with this. im desperate.
Kind regards
colin mclayno not yet with Application Server.
I have tried to compare the settings to another installation with a separeted oc4j as described in the howto. But at the moment i found no mistakes.
If i call the url adresse like:
http://localhost:18101/fop/apex_fop.jsp
i get:
500 Internal Server Error
Servlet error: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: fop.apex__fop
I installed it another time with these settings:
Web Anwendung= .../fop.war (selected war file from apex install directory)
Anwendungsname= fop
URL zuordnen= /fop
I would like to know if its possible to use the fop.war out of apex install directory with the Application server? In the standalone version (as described in howto) it works. But if you install it there you don't need to define an URL.
Is the URL /fop correct or what do i have to insert there? -
Error when deploying JDBC file data source for J2EE agent in weblogic
Hi ODI experts!
we're using ODI 11g and we've installed J2EE agents on weblogic. We need to configure a connection pool within weblogic for a file data source. Thus, we've added snpsFile.jar (that was shipped with ODI 10g...) to the weblogic config so that we can configure a JDBC connection to file.
As we validate the config, an error occurs (see below):
Obviously, driver is found but cannot be deployed.

Fredd.Hi!
Some information: I found this website [http://gerardnico.com/doc/odi/webhelp/en/refmanual/connexion/jdbcdriversample.htm] explaining that the 'old' snpsFile.jar driver was deprecated and that a new one was existing... but I can't find it anywhere!
My questions are:
- Can the problem (original problem. See initial post) be due to driver version?
- Does someone know where to find this 'new' driver?
Thanks for your help.
Fredd.

Project Conventions for J2EE Apps Early Access...
Hi
I am trying to set up a standardized directory structure for J2EE apps that is flexible enough from a simple webapp to a complex J2EE App with multiple EJB components, WARs...etc..etc...
For this, I turned to Java Blueprints Guidelines, Project Conventions for Enterprise Applications Early Access 1 posted on the Sun's web site...
This document states among follwoing that (quote)
-----(quote)
These conventions, which the Java BluePrints team has followed with its applications (which can be accessed from http://java.sun.com/blueprints/code/index.html), assume that developers use the Ant tool for building projects. Developers using other build tools may have to make slight modifications to the conventions.
----(end quote)
I have downloaded the latest J2EE SDk which has samples directory containing the famous , Adventure BUilder, Petstore, etc, etc.....But they do not follow project directory structure as outlined in this document...Moreover, I found each app has different project directory structure even for the same functional part..
1. Are the J2EE sample apps bundeled with J2EE SDK different than the ones available as separate download?
2. If they are not, where can I download sample apps that demonstrate project conventions outlined in the guidelines document...
Any comments are welcome...
Thanks
zambakHi,
The project conventions are new and early access version1. So it will be changing a little bit and as a result the apps may get a little out of sync. We are currently switching the apps over to match with the project conventions. For an app that dempnstrates project conventions, please see the adventure builder on java.net at https://adventurebuilder.dev.java.net/
We are working on a revised version of the project conventions, so your feedback/comments would be highly appreciated.

Spry Accordian panel content height for more than 1 accordian in site
Hi,
I have added a couple of accordians to my website on different pages.
When I adjust the panel content height for 1 it automatically changes it for all of them on my site causing scroll bars to be visible - which I am trying to avoid.
I'm new to Spry coding and am not sure what to change.
Thank you for your helpThis is a frequent question, in one form or other. It helps to understand that when you insert a Spry Widget, the associated javascript and CSS files are also added to your site files. And if you insert a second of the same type of Widget, DW checks and sees the original js and css files and does not add a second (or third). This is efficient, and also keeps your styling uniform across all instances of that Widget in your site.
If you want Widgets of the same type styled differently, you need to add to your CSS stylesheet style selectors that focus on those parts you want to be different.
Because Widgets are already ID'd, you can't add a new ID directly to the Widget <div> But you can wrap the Widget in a new div and put an ID on that.
Say you want two accordions on a page, one with panel content height of 100px and one with panel content height of 200px.
ID your accordions' wrapper divs: <div id="normalheight"> and <div id="doubleheight"> (use better descriptive IDs).
In the CSS stylesheet, do this:
.AccordionPanelContent {
overflow: auto;
margin: 0px;
padding: 0px;
height: auto;
#normalheight .AccordionPanelContent {
height: 100px;
#doubleheight .AccordionPanelContent {
height: 200px;
Be sure to add them directly after the given rule for .AccordionPanelContent; you are re-writing the height in that style selector for your two more specific accordions.

Do older versions of Oracle Application Server support Containers for J2EE?
Do older versions of Oracle 9iAS support Oracle Application Server Containers for J2EE (OC4J)?
I went to the our companies application server directory. I don't see an oc4j or j2ee directory.
Thanks,
MercedHow far back are you looking? ANd what, in particular, are you looking for ...
The history of the Oracle 'internet service' that I remember is roughly:
Web Server 2.1 (mid 1990s)
Web Application Server 3.x (mid 1990s)
Oracle Application Server 4.0.x (late 1990s)
Oracle Internet Application Server 1.0.x (2000)
Oracle Application Server 8i (basically 1.0.2.22.2.z)
Oracle Application Server 9i (9.0.2, 9.0.3)
Oracle Application Server 10g (9.0.4, 10.?.1)
Oracle had an initial J2EE container [attempt] with 4.0.x but that never really took off. I think that was really around the time of the last beta revisions for the JSP spec, and that's left us with the legacy of JServ apps. Seems like you would see OJSE, Oracle JSE (Java Server Engine?) in the docco and path.
IIRC, the current OC4J lineage started with around IAS 1.0.2 and has moved forward on what is now OC4J. There were some opportunities in the early days to improve consistency in the naming and directory structure areas. That has some lineage from Ironflare's Orion engine and so occasionally you see 'Orion' in the messages. -
Suggest good book for J2EE Design Pattern.
Is there any good book for J2EE Design pattern? I know Head First Design Pattern book, but is focuses oncore java. I want to learn in detail with examples J2EE design pattern.
Please suggest good books.
Thanks in advance.
Rahul.most j2ee patterns are discredited now. they were mostly workarounds for deficiencies in ejb 1 & 2 specs.
"core j2ee patterns" is your best bet, but take it with a grain of salt.
better to learn spring, IMO:

Can anybody recommend any useful performance and tuning books.
I should probably limit my search to 11g or higher.
I am starting to prep for the 12c perf and tuning beta I have scheduled on March 21st.
Thanks RogerHi,
I will review your review.
I do see this Oracle 12c book at Amazon written over a year ago.
Its not a certificaiton book.
I also did take the course at Oracle for 11g performance and tuning.
Amazon book:
Oracle Database 12c Performance Tuning Recipes: A Problem solving approach.

Connection for the Oracle9iAS Containers for J2EE Failed.
I tried to Create a Connection to Oracle9iAS Containers for J2EE Provided by Oracle9i JDeveloper and received an Invalid username/password for default (admin) upon testing my connection.
My Oracle9iAS Containers for J2EE are started.
I used the following:
Username - admin
Password - admin
as suggested by Oracle9i Web Services Quickstart Install documentation.
Any idea. Please help.
Thanks,
RudyI am assuming you followed the instructions/pictures in:
http://otn.oracle.com/tech/webservices/htdocs/quickstart/quickstart902.html
and particularly the OC4J startup:
http://otn.oracle.com/tech/webservices/htdocs/quickstart/config.gif
and your JDev app server connection, step 3 looks like:
http://otn.oracle.com/tech/webservices/htdocs/quickstart/13.gif
If this is true, then there are likely three possibilities:
1. If you copied verbatum the picture settings shown in 13.gif picture pointed to above you should make sure you installed JDeveloper in the d:\jdeveloper directory. 13.gif is assuming you started the OC4J in JDeveloper in d:\jdeveloper directory rather than a separate OC4J outside of the JDeveloper path. If your settings are different set them to fit your environment.
If you started a separate OC4J, then edit the JDev app server location in 13.gif where your OC4J is installed (e.g. <OC4J_Location>\j2ee\home).
2. The other common problem here is covered in the grey notes in that quickstart install guide immediately following the setup of the JDev connection. If you are using the JDeveloper shipped as part of Oracle9iDS (i.e. build 822 - see Help->About to get the build number), there is some edits described there that are required for the OC4J file server.xml.
3. If you are using JDeveloper 9.0.3 not 9.0.2 (build 988), then you might be better off following the instructions to get it going from a Web services perspective at:
http://otn.oracle.com/tech/webservices/htdocs/quickstart/quickstart903.html
Hope this helps.

Cannot downlad OAS Containers for J2EE 10g (10.0.3)
Hi,
I cannot download "Oracle Application Server Containers for J2EE 10g (10.0.3)" referenced from the OTN home page (http://otn.oracle.com/index.html) from within the Oracle firewall (haven't tried outside it yet).

Error Recieved:
Sorry, this page was not found (Error Document 404)
http://otn.oracle.com/errors/404.html
Get the same error here:
http://download-west.oracle.com/otn
-GKIt would certainly be more helpful if the website simply redirected users to a web page that stated this fact like the Systems Assurance Center website does (http://sac.us.oracle.com/).
The following is the message I get from the SAC site (which I tried after OTN):
At the moment, you are not allowed to download from the Archive. Please click here to see the reason, and to find out more about your permissions.

Your IP address is: xxx.x.xxx.xx
Our records show that you are in the GMT-5 time zone.
We assume that your local time is Tue Aug 3 15:32:56 2004
You have download access to the Archive from 18:00 to 05:59 on Monday - Friday, and all day during Saturday and Sunday.
Right now, you are not allowed to download software from the Archive. You will gain access to the Archive in 2 hours and 28 minutes.
I certainly find this more informative than "Sorry, this page was not found (Error Document 404)".
It would be great if someone could fix this. Unfortunately at this point, there is no way to distinguish this scenario from other networking failures.

How to setup IBM Trade2 on WLS 6.1 Beta???
Hi all,
I'm currently trying to deploy the IBM Trade2 benchmark application
on WLS 6.1 Beta following the instructions published by BEA.
Unfortunately I still get some error messages and Trade2 does not
work.
Therefore, I would like to know if someone has successfully
deployed Trade2. If yes, could you please send me your EAR file,
the config.xml and the WebLogic start script, so that I can use
it for my tests?
Many thanks for your help and best regards,
ErwinLooking through the WLS log, notice that the run-time parameter is set with
a Run-Time-Mode of "EJB". This uses IBM's VAJ access beans and does not
work with WLS.
To change:
1. Go to "Configure Trade run-time parameters" page at
http://localhost:7001/WebSphereSamples/TradeSample/servlet/TradeConfigServlet.
There is a link to this page under the "Configuration" section.
2. Set Run-Time Mode to "EJB_ALT".
3. Update Config.
Also, remember to populate the Trade Database.

Certified for J2EE (TM)
Hello,
Which driver is certified for J2EE(TM)? I can see on the Sun site that Oracle should have such driver but I can't find it.
VolkerSCJP = Sun Cert. Java Programmer???
I can't compare it's level to other exams as I only did this one.
But my opinion is: It's not difficult.
I just went through the book "Complete Java2 Certification Study Guide" (only the JCP exam's chapters), made some of the test exams and took the real one without a problem.
The exam's objectives cover all the basics of java. If you are working with it regularly, about 90% should be known to you. The other 10% are interesting news, or things, that you saw once, but are not really aware of.
My advice: It's worth the effort!
Good luck!
Anja
ps: by the way:
if you watn to do any of the sun certificate exams, you have to start with this one anyway!!! -
Error:Unable to reserve .lok file for Integrated WLS server (DefaultServer)
Hi,
I am having jdev 11.1.1.1.0.
Many times I get following error while running my application pages:
Unable to reserve the .lok file for Integrated WLS server (DefaultServer). Typically this is because another instance of this server is already running in the WLS domain.
The only way out is to close jdev, delete system11.1.1.1.33.54.07 folder and open jdev again.
Why is this error dialog shown? Is there any permanent solution?
TIAThanks for quick reply!
As suggested in the given thread, I logged into the weblogic console http://127.0.0.1:7101/console/ as 'weblogic' user.
On the left hand side in the 'View changes and restarts' section, no pending changes are shown. It shows following text:
Configuration editing is enabled. Future changes will automatically be activated as you modify, add or delete items in this domain.
Please advise. I can share the application.zip if needed.
Thanks
