Indesign 2.0 crashing on placing pdf from CS5?

Hello all,
One of our printing client newspapers has switched to CS5 running on Mac's (OS10.6).
Our pre-press rig consists of a G-5 (OS 10.2.8) running ID 2.0 which then prints to our imagesetter.
Normally the client emails pdf's of his pages, we place pdfs on an ID template, and then print to the imagesetter.
With the pdf's generated by client in CS5, ID 2.0 crashes as soon as we attempt to place. This happens on serveral machines running same version of ID.
Client is selecting pdf 4 compatability when exporting to pdf.
Anyone know of a solution? (Other than new machine and new ID)?
Thanks
Smokey Briggs

I take it that you are doing impositon in ID rather than using something  like Preps?
Peter,
Correct. We are a small shop. Heck, two of my clients still bring me pasteups and I shoot them on the camera. We picked up the imagesetter and ECRM Version 8.0 rip three years ago -- so -- we're not on the cutting edge in tech or knowledge by any means.
Still, I've got to figure out if there is some way to use this guy's pdf's on our current platform. What could cs5 be adding / subtracting to the pdf that would gack ID 2.0 on place?
Thanks for the help.
Ha, I just learned that client X, instead of doing a one page test but then building in the old ID that worked, decided to send the test but build his entire newspaper in CS 5. Now he wants to know what I'm going to do about it. I'm going to choke him.

  • InDesign 5.5 crashes when generating PDF from book file

    I hope someone can help!
My employer has agreed to upgrade from CS3 to CS5.5 and I will receive the install disks next week. In the meantime, I downloaded the trial version of CS 5.5 Design Premium and installed only Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, and Acrobat. I kept CS3 on my system.
My problem is with InDesign5.5. I can generate a PDF of a single page, but I cannot do the same for a multi-page document (10 or so files) from the book window. InDesign immediately crashes (unexpected close message) but doesn't close until I force quit the application. When both CS3 and CS5.5 were on my machine, I was having the same problem even with CS3.
I removed CS5.5, but still had the same problem with CS3. Tried reinstalling CS3, but continued to have the same problem. Removed CS3 and re-downloaded CS5.5. Same problem. Removed CS5.5 again and completed a fresh install of CS3. This finally worked to allow me to use CS3 successfully again.
However, I need to be able to work with newer InDesign files that have been created in ID5.5 and can't do this without installing the new disks that arrive next week.
    What can be the problem?
OS: Windows XP Professional 2002, SP 3
    Computer: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T9600, 2.80 GHz
    Memory: 3.48 GB of RAM
Video card: 512 MB NVIDIA Quadro RX 2700M
    Thank you!
    Jenny

Yes, I would try to create a new master document and import the separate files. Even if you have saved all files to CS5.5 spec, there might still be some lingering meta data from the previous version and a fresh import might at least reveal such conflicts or ideally provide a clean slate by dismissing this outdated legacy stuff on import. If you are happy with CS5.5 and everything works, you can get rid of CS3, but I recommend to keep it around, even if you don't use it actively (maening löeave it installed, only deactivate it). Especially the CS3 installer is a fragile creature and a uninstall gone wrong might cause you more trouble than just letting it catch dust on your harddrive. See this article and the other ones related to it on my site for some considerations.

  • Interactive pdf from CS5 won't work on Adobe Digitial Editions

I am an ebook publisher creating enhanced ebooks with video, using CS5 to produce interactive pdfs. These work fine on Reader 9, but why won't they work on Digital Editions? This is crucial if they are to be delivered online.

I totally agree with vivrainbow. there is absolutely no point at all in creating an ebook reader if it is not going to display an ebook correctly. It's a complete debacle.
I've just started experimenting with pdf from CS5.5 and found that a pdf which displays and works perfectly in Adobe Reader, does not do so in ADE (and i hate the way ADE displays a watermark which is set to only show at print).
And writing off this complaint as "actually rather special" is actually rather ridiculous. ebook publishers are not in control of the software their end users choose. if someone has a bad experience reading an ebook in ADE they are just as likely to blame it on a crappy ebook file rather than ****** software.

  • Indesign crashes when placing PDFs

    All,
When placing PDFs in and Indesign file, it occasionally crashes. Usually when doing multiple pages, one at a time, some work and some crash.... although the ones that crash always crash and I cannot get them placed.
The goal is to put the PDFs in the file and add text and/or images over the PDF.
    Solutions?
    Power Book Pro OS 10.8.5
    Indesign CS 6

    Eugene,
Produced with IText 2.0.2 (by Iowagie.com), PDF version 1.6 (Acrobat 7.x)
However, some of the pages place just fine, and some crash every time. Suspect there's corruption on the crashing pages.
Is there a way I could save the file in a different format or program and open that into Indesign?

  • Acrobat 8.1 Crashing when creating PDF from webpage

    www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/910569/000091056909000016/form6-k15june09.htm
I have been trying to create a PDF from the above URL using Acrobat 8.1 using the "Create PDF from Web Page" function.  The Download Status form opens and shows the progress as files are downloaded and converted.  However Acrobat 8.1 always crashes before completing the task.  Acrobat 5.0 successfully completes the task although the formatting leaves a lot to be desired but that's another issue.
I've tried various values for settings such as processing 1 level or getting entire site but the crash is consistent.
I have also tried a couple of other machines in the office with the same crashed result.
Can anybody suggest why Acrobat 8.1 would fail to render this URL into a PDF and what would cause it to crash so consistently?  Is there an alternate method of creating a PDF from this URL aside from loading it into Word and printing to a PDF?
    Any clues appreciated!

The problem is likely that the web page does not conform to standard HTML. AA8 crashed on me also. You can print the file from your browser. The only thing that would be missing would be the 3 links near the bottom and they are easy to add.

  • Adobe Acrobat XI crashes when creating PDF from webpage.

I need to create quite a few pdfs from webpages and all of a sudden, after being completely functional, my Acrobat has begun crashing nearly 100% of the time when trying to do so.  I'm defining crashing as either completely crashing ('...has stopped working...') or freezing indefinitely, forcing me to Force Quit.  It may be worth mentioning that I am using the Mac version.  Any ideas?

  • Adobe Acrobat 10.1.12 Crashes Immediately after PDF from Scanner Scan Completes

I am not able to successfully save a PDF from Acrobat because it crashes immediately after I scan the document and I don't get to save the scanned document. I am running Windows 7 Pro x64 and my scanner is a Fujitsu fi-6130 with TWAINx64 drivers. I have uninstalled and re-installed Acrobat as well as removed the scanner and deleted the drivers and then added the scanner again. None of those have fixed the issue and I have read other support posts on the forums but none have been resolved. I need help ASAP as I don't want to throw money away by not using this powerful software.

Stop responding is different from a crash.  A crash would generate some info in the Event Logs.
A hang is more difficult to diagnose.  If I were experiencing the same problem, I would try to use Process Monitor; it could give me some info what exactly hangs (or what it is waiting for).  But it may generate ten thousands of lines to analyze.

No luck yet. Anyone have the same issue?

This might be a scanner issue. Have you tried scanning using other applications?
If not, can you try the following steps once?
    1. Download TWACKER (Twack_32.msi) from http://www.twain.org/downloads.shtm
    2. Install it.
    3. Go to <Program files>\TWAIN Working Group\Twacker 32 and invoke Twack_32.exe.
    4. Go to File menu > Select Source.
    5. Select the TWAIN driver (not the WIA driver) for HP M1212nf and Click OK.
    6. Now, invoke File > Acquire menu.
    Please update with the result.

  • Buttons not exporting to PDF from CS5

Howdy, all. I've a problem exporting documents containing buttons to PDF. Specifically, CS5 doesn't export interactive buttons placed in my InDesign document to interactive buttons in a PDF file; they show up, instead, as simple, non-interactive graphics. (No pointing fingers, no actions.)
This is true for all documents I have created in or imported into CS5.
As a test, I went back to CS4 and created a document with a single button chosen from the "Sample Buttons," to which I attached the "Next Page" action. Exporting to PDF from CS4 works fine; I get a functioning Next Page button in the resulting PDF file. Opening the same InDesign document in CS5 and exporting with the same settings to PDF yields a non-functioning button graphic appearing on the PDF page.
Opening the PDF file in BBEdit, I see that there is no "Fields" entry in the PDF file's Catalog dictionary, so it seems as though the button is, indeed, being exported into the PDF file as a simple graphic.
What obscure CS5 setting (presumably hiding in plain sight) am I missing?
By the way, CS5 does export the buttons correctly to swf.
    Thanks much.
    - John

In CS5 you have to change the export type to an 'Adobe PDF (Interactive)' to get the buttons to work.
Bit of a pain because you can't save presets like you can with the standard PDF export, but you can specify some of the PDFs view settings at the same time.  In my view they should have just added all that functionality to the standard PDF export, but perhaps that wasn't possible.  However it was a dud decision to remove working button export from the other PDF export.

  • Problems saving out a pdf from cs5

  • Adobe Reader 9.3.0.148 crash on launch PDF from explorer

The following crash occurs when launching a .PDF file from Windows Explorer:
    acrord32.exe
    acrord32.dll v9.3.0.148 offset 001937FA
Uninstalling and re-installing Adobe Reader doesn't help.
This is a Windows XP system.
Viewing a PDF via Internet Explorer (add-in) does work.
Any ideas on how to get this solved?
    Thanks,

Try uninstalling, running the Microsoft Installer Cleanup tool then re-installing.

  • CS5.5 Crashes When importing Projects from CS5

I'm trying to update ll my CS5 projects into CS5.5.  However it will load the project, but while indexing the files it goes super slow and eventually stops.  Then crashes.  This happens to all of my CS5 projects I try to import.  CS5.5 however works perfectly fine on it own.  Is there a fix for this or do I have change a setting since I still have both CS5 and CS5.5 installed on the same computer?

First of all, projects don't have these settings any more, sequences do, and you can have any number of different sequences in any given project.
Right click on a clip in the bin and select New Sequence from Clip.  That will create a new sequence that properly matches your footage.  Then delete the clip that's there, and Copy/Paste everything from your old sequence into the new.  You may have to go through and adjust some edits, depending on the settings for the first sequence.

  • InDesign CS6 export to EPUB works different from CS5.5 ?

With CS5.5 I have a Paragraph-Style set to place a space of 10 mm before. When I export to EPUB it works fine.
With CS6 the same style doesn't work: any space is left before the paragraph.
With CS5.5 every "Return" (End of paragraph) with blank paragraph (paragraph without characters - only return) is eliminated during exportation to EPUB.
With CS6 also blank paragraph are exported as they are to EPUB.
So, with CS5.5 I had to define particular style in order to obtain spacing between paragraph: How have I to do with CS6 ?
Have I to use only return to create spacing ?
All works done with CS5.5 are so incompatible to CS6 ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Selene

I'm a firm believer in writing your own CSS but, there was, IIRC, a bug in CS6 that affected paragraph spacing in EPUB. Are you patched to 8.0.1?

  • Printing to pdf question CS5.5 Windows

    I am on a PC - Windows 7 using CS5.5.
    - I have created a piece and printed to a pdf.
    - When the person on the other end prints out the margins are all off. I realize and pointed out they are using an office printer, not a high end printer. The print out seems to be proportionately reduced towards the middle\center.
    - They will have their job done at a Kinko's and I have assured them the Kinko's printer is probably all right and will adjust. I called Kinkos and asked if it needed a specific pdf profile and they said "No."
    - I have sent screen shots of the layout showing measure mark every 1/8 of an inch (placed viewable lines on the layout) so they could see how all is measured properly vis-a-vis InDesign.
    - I checked and there is zero bleed and gutter (guter doesn't apply in this case but made sure anyway).
QUESTION - Is there anything else I can do\try or can it be the printers we are using.
Thanks for any illumination you can give me.
    Respectfully,
    B

Although you didn't ask about this specifically, your original post mentions that you printed to a PDF. My assumption is that you were saying that you created the PDF file by printing to the Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver instance.
Be aware that Adobe absolutely recommends that PDF from InDesign be created by using the export function instead of the printing to the Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver instance or in any other way creating PDF via distillation of PostScript. Direct PDF export from InDesign (and the equivalent save as PDF from Illustrator and Photoshop) yields the most accurate and reliable PDF. The PostScript produced by Adobe applications is optimized for direct printing, not for PDF creation and is often very device dependent. Live transparency and color management is effectively lost and fonts are not optimized. There are other problems and issues as well. Please keep this in mind when creating PDF in the future.
Adobe does provide PDF generation capabilities as part of Acrobat via the Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver instance as a “method of last resorts” to provide PDF creation services for applications for which there is no other or better way of PDF production.
