Indesign 3 palette weirdness

There was a palette weirdness topic on this forum some time back that I can't find. I still have the associated problems eg: highlighted text replaced by a leading amount typed into the text palette. Using a Power PC G5 - 10.4.11 and Indesign CS3 - 5.0.2

InDesign Palettes not working

Hello fellow graphic junkies,
I have a big problem. I am using Adobe InDesign CS5 on windows 7 and have been using it just fine for a long time now. Just today it started having problems. When I open a file everything looks correct and works fine, until I try to push a button on any of the palettes or control panel. The palette titles; ie. Pages, Layers, Links can all be pushed to open up the palette however the buttons in the palette do not work. In fact the weirdest part is that the buttons on the control panel can be pressed but they are off by inches, so I try to change the kerning and the font menu drops down instead however only the control panel buttons and cursor buttons can be pushed. Everything else works, dragging images, writing new copy, drop down menus like File and Edit, clicking cursors or gradients from the cursor palette. I have updated it, re-installed it, and nothing is working. Could this be a plug-in problem with Suitcase Fusion? Is it something crazy like Java or an error with windows itself?

Intel Core 2 Quad CPU 2.8 GHz
4GB Ram
64 bit Windows 7
ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series

Background color palette weirdness

Acrobat 8.1.2
OS 10.5.2
Preferences/Full Screen/Full Screen Appearance/Background color/Other Color
When I go into the color palette I am unable to scroll to the different color settings. ie. CMYK Sliders, RGB Sliders, Crayons, Web Safe Colors, are all "stuck". If I go into another app, then back into Acrobat, they 'unstick'.
Anyone else seen this?

I'm thinking that what you're thinking that he's thinking is not entirely correct. You are correct in that you don't need to open the dialog to change anything there, but I think that he doesn't want to change anything by script (probably because he thinks he can't do that) -- he just wants one of us to do a script that opens the Paragraph Style Options dialog.
It looks as though you were right, by the way. This:
// the "Style Options" item in the par. st. panel
app.menuActions[172].invoke();
produces this error: "The requested action opened an asynchronous previewable modal dialog. This is not compatible with the scripting architecture, and so the dialog has been automatically dismissed using the default button."
But maybe we should wait and see what Leonardo really thinks!

Possible to control 3rd party plugin/palette?

Is it possible to write something (JavaScript/COM programming/plugin) that has access to a 3rd party plugin/palette? I'm talking about XMPie uDirect. XMPie doesn't offer an official API for the plugin but I want to invoke a special action automatically that can be accessed only by the plugin's InDesign palette. I want some kind of automation.

This won't work, sorry. The palette cannot be controlled through the menus... except showing/hiding it.
I got the same idea with system events. It would be great to have a program that sniffs system events and gives information when I press a special button in the InDesign palette. The 3rd party plugin should be a kind of library like DLL that exports functions. Does anybody know a program that can monitor InDesign.exe with all its sub-processes, DLL handles and called DLL functions?
[Edit:] I tried a DLL viewer which can open and show XMPie's plugin files XMPBackEnd5.apln and XMPFrontEnd5.apln (APLN = InDesign PlugIn). They seem to be normal DLL files. If anybody knows the secrets of "decrypting" DLLs it would be nice to know if this can help me. I need to invoke the plugin's commands for XMPie's "Dynamic Print" (new dialog opens) and then just confirm with "OK" to start the export.

Folio Builder Panel on 2nd Monitor Crashing Indesign

I am not sure if this question is appropriate in this forum or the indesign forum, but Ill start here.
I keep all my indesign palettes on a second monitor, and now everytime I open Indesign it repeatedly crashes unless I do a fresh open after deleteing my preferences.
Through trial and error I have narrowed down the issue to the Folio Builder Panel. If i open indeisgn with the folio builder panel open on a second monitor it crashes my system everytime.
Anyone else ever had a similiar issue?

Accessing palette options

Hi folks,
I am using a third party plug-in with indesign CS2 on windows xp. The plugin takes the form of an indesign palette and includes a number of palette options. The plug-in does not come with a scripting API. Is there anyway that I might access and change the various palette options of this plug-in via scripting?
For example is there a way to return an array of objects containing every palette in indesign? If that were possible perhaps I would only need to determine the index of the palette.
Any comments appreciated.

I, too, had this problem with my Microsoft Wireless
keyboard. I had a problem with my mac mini and tried
to interrupt the boot process and had the same
problems. At the time I tried it, I was able to
interrupt the boot process by some luck, but I don't
know exactly what I did special. I was talking to
Apple support on the phone at the time because I was
trying to troubleshoot my mac mini sleep problems.
The support person suggested not using the wireless
keyboard, but he did not give a reason. Luckily, I
just happened to have a generic USB PC keyboard
(no wireless) laying around and I was able to use
that to interrupt the boot process consistently.
Since I rarely need to interrupt the boot process
or reboot my mini for that matter, I see this as a
minor inconvenience.
I've since replaced my Microsoft wireless keyboard
with an Apple bluetooth keyboard. It's smaller
footprint and matches nicely with my Mac (not that
I really care).

InDesign Actions

Make Actions in InDesign (like in Illustrator and Photoshop)

Placed a Word document with mathamatic formulas which origanally came from Scientific Workplace (This program is based on Latex).
All formulas are inline graphics AND imbedded .eps files.
The .eps files need to bee unembed in the link panel menu
In the folowing Popup shows the text "Unembed file ... Do you want to link to the original files"
Answer: Yes
The dialog Choose a Folder follows. Then you need to choose or create a folder.
Answer: Choose
Followed by selecting the inline graphic in InDesign
Palet menu Links choose Edit Original
The .eps file will be opened in Illustrator
In Illustrator i allready made some Actions
After editing the eps file in Illustrator i go back to InDesign
Relink the files in het Links panel
With a few hundred formulas (imbedded inline graphics) you can understand that it whould be great to have Actions in InDesign. But if you think it is possible to make a script... Just let me know...

CreateObject() with ID CS2 broken in Vista (VBA)?

I posted earlier under a fairly ambiguous subject, so I am re-trying here--forgive the dual post, please...
but I think I have narrowed it down. It appears to be a problem with InDesign CS2 and Vista. I can't get any application to call CreateObject successfully without an "Out of memory" error on the call: even from the command line using .vbs.
Does ANYONE have any idea what's going on? Or any ideas? Ole, you out there?

So, you CAN create classes within vbs (at least those run from the command prompt and from within InDesign) AND it seems to create the InDesign object just fine. Weird. This code snippet may help your diagnosis...
UPDATE:
Now, it's not working from the command line. It IS working from the .vbs script in InDesign. Weird. It's always fun trying to find an error when it occurs inconsistently!

Images in dialogs

Is there a way to have a panel contain a pic or swf in a dialog (CS4 or 3 javascript) ? I would like to make a dialog that has a small tutorial movie and/or logo pic in it.

I think you need to use the scriptUI, in ESTK2 "Help" -> "Script UI classes"
an example of loading a swf movie:

Why would an image distort when rotating it 90 degrees?

I got a file from a client, which, when I attempt to rotate it 90 degrees, it distorts elongated. And no, it doesn't matter whether I use PS, Illustrator, or InDesign. Weirdness is making me crazy!?!

Weird OT font behaviour in InDesign and Illustrator

Hi font experts.
I've been directed here by someone at the InDesign forum, who thought you might be able to help.
Can anyone explain what's happening here?
I've loaded an OT version of Zapf Dingbats into Suitcase Fusion on my Mac Pro and it seems just fine. Font Doctor says its OK. Suitcase Fusion says its OK. The font characters display correctly in Fusion.
I can use both the TT and OT versions of the font in Mail and Word. Both versions print OK, too.
But when I apply the OT font in Adobe InDesign or Illustrator, all I get to see is boxes with a cross through them and that "missing font" pinkish hue.
No other OT fonts pose this problem. And deleting the TrueType font of Zapf Dingbats makes no difference so it's not a duplicates problem.
As a result of the above I've temporarily ditched Fusion today to try out FontExplorer (which I like). Comparing the two fonts in there, I can see that there are lots of "missing" characters in the OT version if I select "Show missing characters", but none in the TT version. Not sure if that's relevant.
Also, each character in the OT version has a lot more information, including Character Code, Unicode, Glyph ID, HTML and Keystroke, whereas the TT version simply has the Glyph ID. Don't know if that's relevant either. Incidentally, the keystroke doesn't work in InDesign or Illustrator.

Dang! It was so obvious. The OT version has the symbols in the correct place in the glyph palette. The letters and numbers that I used to type to get the bullets and scissors are empty characters in OT. Thanks to Carl over at Extensis for enlightening me. Boy was I being dim.

Is it possible for Applescript to know what link is selected in the Indesign Links Palette?

I've written some ApplesScripts for Indesign that act on all links, missing links and/or selected links, but what if I wanted to perform an action on a link that is only selected in the links palette?
Is it possible for AppleScript to know which link is selected in the Indesign links palette?

Third Party Plug-in for Multiple Swatch Palettes in InDesign

Hello,
Does anyone know if there is a third-party plug in to have multiple swatch palettes in InDesign? I would like to create different palettes for different sections of the long document --- scrolling through all of the swatches each time is cumbersome.

Here's a little trick that may not even require a third party plugin
On the Master Page
Create a bunch of rectangles, colour them with all the swatch colours you need, make as many pallettes as you like.
Then group them together
Create a text frame
Insert the group as anchored objects
Alignment make it away from spine (so it's always way out to the right or left)
Then Move the text frame over so that it encroaches on the page.
duplicate the frame and put it on the other side too.
Now all your pages have palletes of colour beside them. And you can use the Eye Dropper to sample the colours.
