InDesign 5.5 ePub ToC, 2nd ToC is rolling up previous ToCs*

With a book from 2 files when creating an epub the master ToC for the epub is OK.  There are 3 ToCs - a master one for the book, a ToC for the 1st Chapter, and a ToC for the 2nd chapter.  Each chapter has it's own ToC on the first pageo f the chapter that looks ok if it is the first chapter in the book.  If you reorder the chapters in the book pane (without making any other changes), the 2nd chapter always includes the first chapter's ToC. If I export the individual chapter files to ePub the ToC is OK.  Is there a workaround for this behavior?

Do you "Synchronise the book" after you move the chapter 1 to second chapter location.

  • Dash between words in epub TOC

    Hi,
im getting a dash between the words in the epub TOC. I have it set up so that each chapter is a seperate InDesign document and the TOC is generated from that. What i get is "Chapter-One" when I want it to be "Chapter One".
I am new to epub so any suggestions is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
How does the title look like in InDesign document? Is it Chapter-One or Chapter One? Also let us know the version of InDesign you are using.
Would it be possible for you to share sample document, it will help us understand the problem better. You can upload the document to dropbox and share the link with me. Mail id: [email protected]

  • Exporting InDesign Book to Epub (general questions)

    Re: InDesign CC
    http://www.mobipocket.com/dev/article.asp?BaseFolder=prcgen&File=opfguides.htm
    http://www.mobipocket.com/dev/article.asp?BaseFolder=prcgen&File=cover.htm
I've created a 366 page book using about 32 individual .indd files and have some general exporting-to-epub questions.
    1. Images.
My images are placed .ai and .psd files that have names I can understand, such as picture-of-this.ai and picture-of-that.psd. When InDesign exports to epub, the images are renamed to something that a species whose native language is binary can understand. For example, this and that get renamed to 12345.jpg and 67890.jpg. And then there is also a funky naming convention that keeps the original name but adds _fmt.jpeg to it.
Is it possible for me to export to epub and keep original file names?
    2. content.opf metadata
Ultimately my epub needs to be converted into Kindle format. Amazon provides a Kindle Previewer that converts the file into their required .mobi format and that works, but some minor customization is required to get it to work right. The minor customizations include assigning the cover page, the table of contents (toc), and in my opinion, an even more important start page.
My cover page, toc, and start page exist as individual .indd files.
According to the mobipocket references (provided above), I need to add a few items to the content.opf file:
    For the cover:
    <metadata> <meta name="cover" content="my-cover-image" /> </metadata>
    <manifest> <item href="MyCoverImage.jpg" id="my-cover-image" media-type="image/jpeg" /> </manifest>
    For the table of contents:
    <guide> <reference type="toc" title="Table of Contents" href="mytoc.html"/> </guide>
    For the start page:
    <guide> <reference type="start" title="Start here" href="starthere.html"/> </guide>
So, I can use Dreamweaver easily enough to open the content.opf file and manually insert those codes, but is there a way I can pre-code their key values into the InDesign page so that they are automatically placed in the proper positions on export?

    Hi Michael.
That's a good suggestion about inserting jpg's into the InDesign document and then exporting to epub. I've done that before and it's worked quite well, especially with consideration to file size. However, this particular book has over 130 graphics and it's also going to the printing press... so I'm trying to keep my workload to be as efficient as possible. So you wouldn't have known that, and again, that's a great suggestion.
I have not been able to get that plugin to work, and it's also no longer necessary. Kindle has a previewer that automatically converts the file to .mobi format, and allows the user to view the .mobi file through viewing screens that represent the Kindle device:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&docId=1000765261
Thanks for the info on the ALT text. I need to do that.... I've also looked through the File Info window tabs and did not find any area that seemed to allow me to enter that information.
I have previously created and published on Kindle one book that was one single InDesign file, and as you suggested, had the cover and TOC with everything else. Unfortunately, there too, I had to manually enter the cover, start, and toc code using Dreamweaver.
It looks like at this time there's no easy way to get around manually updating the .html files.
Thanks for making the time to reply.

  • InDesign Exporting to ePub adding extra frames

When I export my InDesign file to ePub I keep getting extra frames (gray rectangles) in the ePub.  I tried different export settings but keep getting the same result. What am I doing wrong? Here is link to ePub.  please help!

Okay, I figured out what was wrong.  I had two frames on top of each other in my indesign file. I was anchoring the top frame and using it to create Articles in the Artciles pane.  The extra frame behind my images was used to create a shadow effect.  Next time, I'll just use shadow effect.

  • Indesign document to ePub Conversion

    Hi,
Please can anyone help me to get a solution to convert Indesign document to ePub file using indesign plug-in development?
    Thanks
    Ashok

You set the indents and spacing in the Paragraph Styles panel under the Indents and Spacing tab. First Line Indent, Space Before/After. You will need two styles if the first par is not indented and the subsequent ones are.
There is an InDesign ePub forum.

  • Problem export Indesign document to epub

I get the following message everytime when I try to export an Indesign document to epub.
"  The file was exported but one or more problems were detected:
    Resource: 1 missing
    Macintosh HD:Ap…n
    CS6.app:Contents:MacOS:template.css"
Can someone tell me what it means and what I can do to correct this.
    Thanks
    Regards
    Claudine

Your InDesign CS6 file probably was created in an earlier version where the CSS file created was handled in a different way. It's associated with a "template.css" file that InDesign cannot find.
Choose File > Export > EPUB. Go to the Advanced panel. In the CSS Options section, select "template.css" in the Additional CSS section, and click Delete.

  • Epub TOC formatting

Hey folks, I'm hoping you can help me out.  I have a indb file with a TOC STYLE set up in the first indd file.  The TOC style is determining which Paragraph styles to retrieve for use in an ereader's native TOC mechanism.  I have Level 1 and Level 2 styles in the TOC and they display just fine in both Digital Editions and Calibre ereader software's native TOC mechanism.  However, any Paragraph style that is set as a Level 2 in the TOC style has its formatting in the epub FILE ITSELF altered.  The Spacing Above disappears and it is jammed up against the previous text.  It's almost like Level 2 styles have their spacing formatting removed.
I can edit the CSS file after the fact to fix it, and realize I could create separate indd docs to start each Level 2 heading on a new page, but there are a ton of them.  Do you know of any way to keep InDesign from removing the spacing above Level 2 styles?
    Thanks for any insights!

  • Pages to ePub: TOC and Title Page

Hello everyone... please help! I'm pulling my hair out.
When exporting from Pages to ePub, I'm having two issues:
1- The Title Page (which is page 1 and has been selected as the cover of the book) does not appear or appears blank. What do I have to do to make it appear?
2- I hear in all forums the need to build a TOC in addition to the one ePub already creates and that appears on the left hand side when the file is opened using an ebook reader. Can anyone please tell me why I have to do this and most importantly HOW to do it?
    Thank you very much!!

Thank you for sharing such an informative post! I'd like to offer one small correction.
My company publishes children's picture storybooks in print. These are edge to edge full color pages for those who may not be familiar with this format. Our early ePub's were always disappointing in that we could not duplicate the print format without showing considerable white margins on an e-reader. We have since solved that problem in order to achieve the maximum image size. There will always be some amount of white margin in ePub format, but our image output now nearly fills the screen of any e-reader.
The 600X860 resolution is correct in order to achieve a wall to wall ePub image. The image must be created at that resolution for insertion into the document, and the page setup must also be set at the same dimension, which in inches is 8.333X11.944. You cannot, for example, use a smaller size image and drag it with constrained proportions to fill the viewport at the 600X860 resolution. The exported ePub file recognizes the portion of the image that is beyond the margins of the viewport and it will show up in an e-reader with a large white bottom margin.
Dragging a smaller image than the 600X860 resolution to fill the viewport with unconstrained proportions will work, but of course distorts the image. So, create your images at 600X860, insert them into your doc, export to ePub and you will be happy, happy, happy!

  • EPub TOC not appearing in one book only

Hi - I've been creating ePubs from Pages files for the past several months, and when I open the ePubs in Adobe Digital Editions 2.0, the TOC appears in the left panel - except in one book! I've created them all the same way in Pages, using the same style templates, exported them all the same . . . but this latest book ePub won't show me the TOC in ADE. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks - Dusty

Okay got it figured out. Thanks anyway folks! (It was a selection in the Inspector in Pages that was off.)

  • CS5.5 ePUB: TOC Marker problems

    Hi all
Got a problem with some ePUBs I'm exporting out of CS5.5 (7.5.3). I use the TOC Style feature to generate the navigational menu, which it does, but I had some issues with jumping straight to articles in iBooks. Also I was getting some validation errors that caused me to look at the toc.ncx file - eg, "'toc_marker-4': fragment identifier is not defined in 'OEBPS/blahblah_epub.html'"
    Turns out that although ID puts all the correct "toc_marker" code into the toc.ncx file it doesn't always put the corresponding code into the actual html files themselves. For example, in the toc.ncx file the code relating to my second file is;
    <content src="02_Editorial_epub.html#toc_marker-1"/>
    but in the "02_Editorial_epub.html" file there's no "toc_marker-1" defined anywhere. If I add it in next to the para style that is used for the TOC (and do the same for all the other articles - only 2 out of 18 files were output correctly) then it works fine in iBooks and the validation errors disappear. Example of my fixed code;
    <p id="toc_marker-1" class="A-head-article-title">Editorial</p>
In case it is relevant, my job is made out of a collection of separate chapters in an ID book - I'm not getting ID to split them up. Also, my first document is just an image of the cover of this title so does not contain the paragraph style I ask ID to include on the TOC, so it does not appear in the TOC (which I'm happy about).
Does anyone know of any workarounds or is this just another thing we need to fix manually once the ePUB is output? Haven't tested this in the CS6 demo yet but we won't be getting CS6 in the near future so that would not be a great help.
    thanks,
    Iain

Thanks amygfx. Seems like a logical idea. I tried adding in a TOC, even left it in when I made the ePUB, but it didn't make any difference I'm afraid.
    Any other ideas?
    Just to check I'm doing it right, here's my TOC style;
    It's in teh first document in teh book (which is selected as the source) and here's the options I choose when exporting the ePUB;
Using these settings makes a navigation menu okay but just not correctly!

  • EPub TOC problem.

I use Pages to create ePub books. The new Pages update adds a crudely-formatted, auto-numbered TOC at the beginning. I'm not a programmer and don't know the best way to edit it out of there. Any ideas?

Well, a co-worked happened upon the answer to this!
I was aware of the "don't use nested stylesheets rule", which I thought was here:
But it turns out, that ALSO means NOT to organize style sheets here:
Once I took the eHeader style sheet out of the folder, the TOC generated as expected!

  • Epub TOC disappears

Can't find an ePub forum, so I'll try here.
I created a small epub file that worked fine on ipad (automatic TOC was there, video works, pictures show up, etc.)
Then I made  a change in it and importing it again to ipad (via iTunes), and found that the automatic TOC was no longer there.
However, the NCX file from that ePub DID VALIDATE when tested online.
These are the step-by-step changes I made.
    1. Removed one chapter (with one picture) from end of the booklet and inserted it into an earlier chapter.
    2. Made no changes to the entries of the chapter that received the insert in either the NCX file or Manifest or Spine sections of the OPF file.
    3. Deleted the moved chapter from the NCX file (and the changed NCX validated online).
    4. Deleted the moved chapter from OPF Manifest and Spine sections.
    5. Moved the Manifest "dataItem#" of the picture in the insert up, so instead of #4 it is #2 (as it's now the second pic appearing in the booklet).
    6. Except for renumbering the dataItems in the Manifest, I changed no text in these moves. It was all cut and paste.
    7. In the moved/inserted chapter, I changed the <h1> of its title to <p class="centerhead"> (which isn't tagged for inclusion in TOC).
    8. The syntax in all chapters and cover checks in BBEdit.
Please note: All text, video and pictures still show up. Only the automatic TOC is missing.
Has anyone had similiar problems? Thanks.

Update: solved by restarting my iPad. Never expected this to be necessary on an Apple-device…

  • InDesign style problems on TOC

I'm having problems with my paragraph styles.  I'm working on a large document with imported text.  About half way through, all of a sudden I couldn't get my styles to work correctly.  For example, I'd select body copy and instead it would format as a header.  I checked the styles and they were correct.  I read in a thread to try using alt+shift when selecting the style and that worked.  But now I'm trying to generate the TOC and I'm having the same problem.  Nothing works.  Plus the styling it is applying is inconsistent even with the same style selected.

I think that you should try to post some screenshots; what you're describing makes no sense. If all TOC entries
    1) are marked with the same para style;
    2) have no character styles applied; and,
    3) have no overrides
then they should look identical to one another.
So, if you post a screenshot of your TOC with the Paragraph Style palette visible, and you can verify that your Character Styles palette is completely empty, then we might be able to diagnose your problem.
The techniques I use to make sure that my styles have no overrides:
    a) I have "Clear Overrides" mapped to control-shift-numlock enter. So, I can select text and whack that key combo, and know that it is free of para style overrides.
    b) Then I can put my insertion point at the beginning of the first text box, and use control-shift-downarrow to select whole paragraphs at a time. When I do so, I can watch the para styles palette to see if the "+" appears indicating that I still have an override in that paragraph.
    c) I use styles in my TOC that have names that are similar to to the actual subheaders in the body text. So, "Semibold Subhead" gets added to the TOC, and is styled with "Semibold Subhead TOC" like so:

  • InDesign CS5.5 EPUB export not showing cover image in Adobe Digital Editions

I have a document that I am trying to ensure is reflecting the cover image prior to uploading to several EPUB sites like google and Barnes and Noble. I am using Adobe Digital Editions, Calibre, Firefox (EPUBReader) to do the troubleshooting on the document. Calibre shows the cover image Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) does not. Are their any known problems with ADE not reflecting the cover image that I need to be aware of before I continue working on this?
The ADE help says the following:
"Once the items are in your library, there are two ways to view the content of any bookshelf. You can view thumbnails of your items. The thumbnail is the cover page of the item (or just the first page if it doesn't have a cover page). In this view, you see the set of thumbnails and some information about each item (author, title). You can also sort the order in which the items are shown by author, title, date created, number of pages, and so forth."
Here is basic informaiton. I have a cover page in my export to EPUB but ADE will only show the first page. Again Calibre shows the cover page.
    CS 5.5
The project is a book (indb) composed of multiple documents (indd)
Exporting as book as an EPUB
On general tab I am "Use existing image"
I am rasterizing the first image in Indesign via the "Object - Object export options" but I am not selecting that option when on the general tab of the Export to EPUB options. I am chosing a file from my disk. I thought that maybe the file name was too long but I changed the image to "cover.jpg" and reexported it but it still does not work.
Here are the contents of the content.opf file with all the pointers. I have updated the file as I believe you can tell with guides, creation date, etc....
    It passes the SIGIL check.
The image name is Democracy in Business Dust Jacket 300dpi.jpg. It is 300 dpi and 1650 x 2550. I could also cut in the one that I did for cover.jpg but it only replaces the file name.

I have also been trying to get this cover image to display on PC for NOOK but it appears that everyone is having hits problem too. I have followed some trouble shooting guides and renamed the jpg image, Democracy in Business Dust Jacket 300dpi.jpg to cover.jpg but that doesn't seem to work either for NOOK.
Any help you can give would be appreciated. I am new to InDesign (I know you probably hate hearing that, but I have gotten so close to being done overcoming all the new user hurdles). I think this is my last one before uploading to the appropriate sites - PS. I got the cover page to show up on the Kindle but not Adobe's own product.
    Thanks

ebookjunkie, I have just used InDesign to publish two very short "books" (.99 cent variety) and started this thread with the first question. Look to Bob for the expert advice. This is neophyte advice from someone moving from publishing a full book using Word to EPUB/Kindle and now using InDesign to publish to EPUB/Kindle.
First ADE is useless. I say this out of frustration of trying to use it to troubleshoot problems and it has so many problems in displaying an EPUB that you spend a lot of time troubleshooting ADE issues rather than EPUB problems. The problems are not limited to but won't display a cover page properly, text wrapping is iffy, Drop caps a problem, bringing over supported items like drop caps, all small caps, etc.... are also issues as best I can tell. Humble opinion is delete off your desktop. I use the following to troubleshoot my EPUB's/Kindle books on my Windows platform; Calibre, Barnes and Noble's Nook for PC and iPhone iTunes for EPUB (Sigil to look for errors); and for Kindle, Kindle previewer and Kindle for the PC. Even after doing this, I just today saw my book a buyer's Android "Reader" and the pictures did not display at all. So it is publish once and test everywhere! Unfortunately, you just can't test all the possible devices and iterations of readers. (I am from IBM and we couldn't do it, so how publishers are supposed to figure it out is beyond me!)
On the absolutely great news end, you will see a lot of problems about placing images on the iPad with a lot of workarounds. They apparently (Apple) have fixed this as my two publications show images nicely now on both the iPhone and iPad with the iTunes bookshelf/reader. They were "microdots" when viewed previously. I did nothing to fix it and was just not going to publish to the iPAd and just tested them a few weeks ago and they display perfectly. So Apple has fixed the problem. If it looks good on the Nook for PC, it should look good on the iPAD/iPhone now as best I can tell.
    Cheers
