Indesign 5.5 or 6 + yosemite = production at standstill

recently I brought into a production of about 25 mixed OS 10.6.8 and 10.9.4 Xeon Mac Pros and i7 iMacs two additional iMacs running Yosemite 10.10
When the graphic artists who need these systems work on shared InDesign pages the redraw (with multiple layers) is measured in an unresponsive system for at the very least 5 - 10 minutes as opposed to seconds on all the other systems not running Yosemite.
there are 8 iMacs in the area, all with i7 3.5GHz., GTX 775M 2GB Nvidia cards, 16 GB RAM (directly from Apple)
Six of them are running Mavricks where this slow behavior simply does not happen., the other two are on OS 10.10.1 where it does. All these computers were unboxed and Adobe CS 5.5 was installed along with the 2014 Java, there was no image involved.
I am able to reproduce this slowness on the 2.26GHz. Dual Xeon 8GB RAM, 512MB Nvidia, OS 10.10.1 system [see "i have tired the following]" using InDesign CS6
Upgraded to CC is not an option since I'm not budgeted to upgrade 25 macs on a $2500 a month cost cycle for the foreseeable future, but I am seriously looking at going to Windows.
I have tired the following:
Verifying permissions on the Macintosh HD
Copying the document to a new document on the desktop
Re-saving the document as a new document to reset the meta-data
Shutting off all fonts that are not needed.
under Display Performance
turing down the display settings in InDesign to "Typical"
under Preference>Interface:
unticking all features under Cursor and Gesture options
unticking all features under Panels
Setting Hand Tool Performance to minimum (Better Performance)
Live Screen Drawing is set to Delayed (or None; neither helps)
Turned pre-flight off all documents.
all these features are currently running on the systems with Mavericks and they respond quickly even with all of them enabled.
Is there some way I can downgrade these systems to mavericks or has anyone seen this and found a fix?
These brand new systems are being outperformed by the 5 year old mac pros they are replacing.

I've seen behavior like this on InDesign pages that require multiple layers, and it makes no sense at this time
1) make the layers visible.
2) drag the selection over an area with multiple items
3) CMD+Shift+LMB to resize
the result is Yosemite (on two iMacs and on MacPro Dual Xeon) took almost 10 minutes to complete the resize, there is also a long delay in Mavericks as well which i did not see before since this was reported to me and I watched as 3 different and very experienced InDesign users (two on Yosemite, one on Mavericks all on identical i7 iMacs) showed results where Mavericks was clearly faster in this particular operation.
When I switch the operation and do step 2 before step 1 the result is the resize takes about 15 - 20 seconds in Mavericks, and slightly longer in Yosemite the first time it's done, however subsequent resizes in Yosemite are subject to the prolonged delay and I can not reproduce a similar delay in Mavericks at this time.
To further complicate this any non-default setting InDesign to speed up the interface is actually slowing down the entire process with the exception of the view delay which does not perform a redraw during the drag operation.
When time allows I need to evaluate what's being used in the pages, fonts, images, effects, but my schedule will not allow me to do this either this week or next.

  • Indesign image placement issue after Yosemite

After I upgraded to Yosemite, and after installing the Java 6 and 8 for my CS5, I am having problem with InDesign when I tried to search for images to place on my pages. Because I have thousands of product images in my computer, I need to use the "name matches" function to look up the exact image I need. But I cannot click on the pop-up menu that show up right after I type in the file name in the finder.
    This is what I did:
Selected the image box I want to place the image in
Short key commend+D to bring out the Place window
Type in the image file name in the search box on the right, then the option for Name matches will pop up underneath.
Here's the problem, I cannot click on it, it just won't response. So I am getting all the files that contains that name.
But that function in normal finder/window works.
This problem is causing me serious productivity issue.
Does anybody has the same problem, or have any idea how to fix it? Thank you.

Thank You jent85 for having this same problem.  Only I am using CS4.  Indesign, Photoshop and Illustrator can no longer "match name" when searching within InDesign. I just get an error beep and ALL the results within.   Very frustrating after spending $1500 for this software. Please don't answer with upgrade. Why? To fix one thing? Another $1500 or 29 then 49 per month?   Software is a tool and a hammer can always hammer a nail no matter if they upgrade the nail.
All my other software works so far as I can see.   Is there a terminal command or some fix for this?  I found a fix for speeding up printing in Indesign by removing some PDD's english french etc.  Hoping there is something like this for this one.
Perhaps there is something else online we cannot find.  My search phrase is not accurate.  What do you call the 'finder search box" when you are within software?   In other words what are some terms to search in google?

  • Is InDesign CS5.5 compatible with Yosemite

    Hi Adobe Community,
Looking forward to upgrading to Yosemite but I'm nervous that it will render some of my Adobe CS programs unusable. I currently am running on Mavericks and us Adobe CS5.5 for Indesign. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
    All the best,
    Ryan

    Hi Ryan
    I have InDesign CS 5.5 Vers 7.5.3
Before I downloaded Yosmite to my Hard Rive I downloaded it to an External Hard Drive.
I put InDesign onto this drive. I was prompted to download Java and after doing this InDesign works fine.
I then downloaded to my hard drive on my Late 2009 27" iMac - works fine for me.

  • Can not open InDesign CS5 after updating to Yosemite.

I cannot open InDesign CS5 after updating my iMac to OS X Yosemite. I received an error message that said I need to install the legacy Java SE runtime.
I searched through the topics in this Forum, and followed what was recommended.
I have installed the most current legacy Java SE 8 runtime and verified that it is on my computer,
then rebooted the computer, a 2014 iMac. I have uninstalled and reinstalled InDesign CS5.
I still receive the error message that I need to install the legacy Java SE runtime. Next steps?

CS5 is NOT supported under Yosemite. Additionally, in place operating system upgrades are nothing short of a crapshoot.
Try uninstalling, running the cleaner tool and reinstalling. If that doesn’t help a clean install of the operating system is in order.
Even then you’re on your own.

  • Will CS6 Design Standard (Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign) work in Apple OSX Yosemite?

Will Lightroom 5 work in Apple OSX Yosemite?

What is wrong with Adobe that they do not address this situation. I work in a town that has a major design school and the students (who can't afford CC) are all out of luck running CS6 on the recent (Feb 1) update to Yosemite.
The whole Adobe community should be pressing them on this situation...as well as Apple. Don't these companies converse!

  • Assistance in selecting products: InDesign, CS5 or others?

Firstly, I have to ask how does anybody contact Adobe?! I have spent the last half hour trying to find even the webform that I completed a week before, but now can no longer find, let alone an address to send an email to. What a waste of my time...all I could find were dead ends in the Support/Help areas, which just looped around on themselves. Very frustrating, particularly with the Adobe site processing each page so slowly.
So, why do I want to contact Adobe? Well, as I said, a week ago I completed an online form asking for assistance in determining which product(s)/suites and pricing options would best suit our needs, or what options do we have to choose from. With so many individual products and suites, I simply didn't know where to turn, so I sent this request. Almost a week later and I still haven't heard from Adobe, so I am appealing to others who hopefully will be able to give me some guidance. Below is my original request to Adobe. If someone could pls help me out here, I would be so thankful as I'm simply unsure which way to go! Wendy
We have CS4 Production Premium, which we're looking to upgrade to the new CS5.5. However, we have also been advised by our printer that we should create our books using InDesign. You have so many products in your range, with some products being included in suites, and I truly don't know where to start!
Is InDesign the best option for us for creating our manuscripts and, if so, which version in the range is best for our needs? I skimmed the capabilities, but can't determine if such features as footnotes, auto-indexing of select terms, automatic table of contents, linking (eg. bookmarking text so page number of bookmark appears elsewhere in the manuscript) is available in the InDesign range.
Til now we have built our books in Word, and sent the PDF to our printer. However, our printer needs to be able to alter some content to suit his processes, and is finding this difficult with the newer version of Word that we're using, hence his request that we use InDesign. What is your recommendation?
I understand we would have to upgrade our CS4 Production Premium to CS5.5 Production Premium if we were to go down the path of getting InDesign. If this is the case, is there a suite that would be more cost-effective for us to purchase, which contains both applications?
I'm assuming that the licencing on your products is for one PC or laptop, so we'd need to purchase one for each user? Alternatively, can the one be used by two or more users on different PCs or laptops?
Lastly, I notice that you have subscription options (month-by-month and yearly), which might be a more cost-effective option, given that we would have 3 users of the InDesign software (assuming we go down this path!). Is this the case, or are there other cost savings available if we purchase more than one retail product?
Apologies for all these questions, but as you can see, I really do need some assistance! Thank you for your help, Wendy.

  • There was a problem updating InDesign CC For more information see the specific error below.  Update Failed Download error.  Press Retry to try again or contact customer support.(49)

Posted the entire text from the error window, when trying to update, using the normal NON-TECHIE way to update any and all Adobe CC products, via the Creative Cloud updater installed when Adobe Creative Cloud subscription was purchased when first offered.
    The following occurs, ad nauseam:
There was a problem updating InDesign CC
For more information see the specific error below.
    Update Failed
Download error.  Press Retry to try again or contact customer support.(49)
Here's the crux of my frustration:
    (1) Customer Service is NOT contact-able, to receive LIVE help.
    (2) There is NO way for me to mitigate this "Download error", being a student learning InDesign, and NOT in any way capable of tweaking folders/files here and there.
    Therefore, the real question:
Given that a significant number of subscribers are having the above referenced issue with attempting to download the current update for InDesign, WHAT ARE WE SUPPOSED TO DO, in order to get our contractually paid-for updates to our legally and contractually paid-for Adobe software, specifically in my case, InDesgin's current update?
Please, NO TECHNICAL mumbo-jumbo which most likely will cause the overwhelming majority of users, like me, to seriously corrupt their computer files, but rather an honest, straightforward "what to do" from real CS/Engineers working for Adobe, as to how to FIX this issue, period.
    ===========================================================
    UPDATE:
Here is a way in which I think I was able to "update" my InDesign CC application:
    (1) Sign-In to your Adobe Account
    https://www.adobe.com/
    (2) Click on the MENU icon
    (3) Click on the product InDesign icon
Your browser should display the page for Adobe InDesign CC
    https://www.adobe.com/products/indesign.html?promoid=KLXLU
    (4) Click on the Download icon,
Your browser should now display the page to download InDesign,
    https://creative.adobe.com/products/download/indesign
    (5) a Pop-Up window should open, and display:
      Launch Application
This link needs to be opened with an application.
with the first option to select being the CreativeCloud(URIHandler)
    (5) Select this application and click OK.
What happened when I followed steps (1) thorugh (5) is that:
    (a) InDesign CC(2014) was installed,
    (b) InDesign CC, updated, and then
    (c) InDesign CC(2014), also updated.
Why this all worked, is a mystery to me.
Looks like a separate, "new" version of InDesign, InDesign CC(2014), was installed, the existing "old" InDesign was updated, and then the newly installed Indesign CC(2014) was further updated.
A BIT MORE, when I launched my InDesign CC app, and checked to see if there were Updates Available, there in fact was an Adobe InDesign CC 64 bit (9.2.2) update.
I clicked on UPDATE and my "old" InDesign CC app was "successfully updated."
FURTHER INFO:  I may have neglected to list some important info ... OS:  Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center, 64-bit
Confused, I am able to launch BOTH of these apps, and hopefully I may use one of these versions of the InDesign CC app, to do some InDesign work.
    Will keep y'all posted!

  • SWF Export, no font showing in Acrobat and zoom border problem (Acrobat & Reader) - Indesign CS6

    Hi Everyone,
If anyone could help me on this that would be great, I've spent hours on the forums and manuals to no avail.
I'm making an interactive PDF brochure in Indesign for one of our new products and I'm having issues (actual or perceived??!!) with the SWF export and PDF creation.  I'm placing animations and video in the INDD, exporting it as an SWF (with the text option as Flash Classic Text) and then opening the SWF (not importing to a word doc or anything, just opening the SWF) with Acrobat using the advanced options to import the video resources and to enable the content when the page is opened.  I then save the file as a PDF.  In the PDF everything works as it should, the animations, the buttons, the video plays and so on.  Great.. hmm not quite.
The trouble I am having is that all the content of the SWF when viewed in Acrobat seems to be getting rasterised/flattened - is this correct?  After the SWF is opened, Acrobat indicates no fonts in the fonts tab in the document properties so when the SWF is zoomed in Acrobat, or the saved PDF in Reader, the font gets pixelated and the document is not searchable/text can not be highlighted.  The images are not selectable either - it is as if the entire page has been flattened to one image.  Is there a way to stop this so that the SWF opened with Acrobat retains the font and individual images like a normal PDF?  Do I have to open the SWF in Flash first to set some parameters or something?  Is there something I am doing wrong when exprting the SWF from Indesign?  I think I have tried about every possible export combination.  When I open the .HMTL (exported at the same time as the SWF from Indesign) in a browser, the same happens.  All the animations work but the text appears to be rasterised/flattened/not searchable.  Sorry if I'm not using the correct terminology.
I have tried importing the SWF back into another new INDD and exporting that as an interactive PDF but then the video does not work.  I suppose I could try exporting all the individual animations as SWFs, importing them all and trying to get them to work with the video but I can see that will take quite some time and does not seem to be a guaranteed solution from what I have read on the forums - video playback being the issue.
Another problem is that when the SWF, or saved PDF, is zoomed in Acrobat/Reader between approx 150% and 210% a thick white border appears in the document and the content is squashed into the middle creating a slightly pixelated and narrow page.  When I zoom out from the page I get a small white line on the right hand border at around 70% zoom.  Please see images.  Does anyone have any idea why this is happening and what I can do to fix it?
On another, sort of related topic, my timing panel went blank yesterday and was not showing any animations in documents that it had been used to order and synch animations on page load as well as new documents.  The panel was blank.  I updated to V8.0.1 and the panel sprang back into life - hope that helps anyone else finding the same problem.
I am not very familiar with Indesign/Acrobat/Flash so I guess all the above could be what I'm doing or I could be asking  really dumb questions - apologies from a newbie.
    Best,
    Emily

    Hi All,
I have now pretty much solved all the issues by creating the SWF in Flash rather than Indesign.  I would advise anyone looking to create an interative PDF with animation and interactivity to go with Flash from the start.  While Flash is a little more involved to create the same effects as Indesign, the extra time taken will ensure a more controllable and better looking PDF in terms of text quality, scalability and so on.  Plus you will not spend days trying to get video to work along side imported SWF etc in Indesign.  One of the best controls in Flash is being able to set the stage.scaleMode for the document so the PDF still looks crisp when zooming, no white borders etc.  So, create the .fla, export to .SWF, open the .SWF with Acrobat, modify the advanced settings to enable start on page load and save as a PDF.  If you don't know Flash, I didn't a couple of days ago, watch a couple of tutorials on Youtube.. buttons, tweens, embedding video and you'll be ready.  Don't be put off by ActionScript, there are really handy Code Snippets in CS6 that do all the heavy lifting for you.
    Sorry Indesign!
    Best,
    Em

  • InDesign CS5 lag slow on Snow Leopard 10.6

I am reaching the end of patience with this one and starting to wish i'd not paid for a CS5 upgrade.
I installed under Mac OS 10.5 originally, did all updates and had font and other deathly slow issues in Photoshop.
In the end, I enacted a TOTAL system maintenance routine and upgraded to System 10.6 in order to try and get round probs with CS5.
I since have ditched all prefs, reset all caches, cleared all logs, done total font checks and removed a couple of corrupt ones, repaired disk permissions etc etc etc....  Photoshop 'appears' to work ok, although saving and saving to web can be sluggish (pizza wheel waiting for it....)
InDesign CS5 is now taxing my productivity. I thought it was my Wacom Intuous 3 tablet, but find the issue (at the mo as I've not noticed anything significant yet in Illustrator or Photoshop) only occurs with InDesign CS5.
The issue is the glitchy interface - stepped or delayed movements of objects across the page, selecting menu dialogue boxes can take a second when i click on a value, slightly steppy movements make selecting the tiny up and down arrows on some menus very tricky to be accurate.  PLUS saving and saving PDFs in particular as well as PLACE images CMD-D can be deathly slow.  It used to be almost instaneous, slowed only by the hard drive firing up. Now i try to do things and have to wait on many actions. It's doing my head in!  This is NOT PRODUCTIVE.
In InDesign i have tried turning off Live Redraw, dropping display quality to fast (makes working almost impossible as i need to see what i'm doing), and disabled the Preflight option that is on by default, and i'm sure other options too i've seen on forums.  But no better.
I have a Quad Core 3Ghz Intel Mac with 14Gb RAM, and an NIVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT graphics card.
IS this APPLE or ADOBE issue?  How on earth can i get my speedy productivity back so i can move around the screen smoothly, save and place quickly, and select menu dialogues without waiting for it to react..... HELP!

thanks for the heads-up Peter.  Id not have thought to deactivate Adobe stuff first.
I've ordered a new WD Caviar Black (larger cache than i have on current drive) so a slight upgrade of drive, and as you say, a preserved backup.  I dont have any spare bays in my Mac as i've filled them with other drives used for backups and other stuff, so i may need to buy an external case for the SATA i'm taking out.  No matter, it will be sorted this weekend.
thanks all for help. fingers crossed this rather drastic step works!
Glad I thought of it. However, if you're keeping the drive, and don't have other installations, you can keep the backup drive installations active if you'll have a use for them if you boot from that drive. With your slow performance issues, you'll probably not want to use InDesign on that drive, but perhaps you'd want to use some other rarely-used apps from that drive. Yes, space, the final frontier.
OWC has USB drive adapters that work with many types of drives, including SATA, for about $30. They're open gizmos - no enclosure, no power supply, no fan, etc. They also have notebook-sized (2.5") drives up to 1TB  with USB portable enclosures under $200, less for smaller.
Consider an extra empty drive for use with Time Machine, as an ongoing automatic backup. It's very comforting. An alternative or supplement is yet another drive that you use with Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper, inexpensive shareware, that make complete and/or incremental backups, on demand or on schedule. I use Time Machine to back up a Time Capsule drive - wired or wirelessly - and CarbonCopy Cloner to back up to a portable USB drive that's Velcro'd onto the top case of my MacBook Pro.
Oh, and for suspenders to go with my two belts, or maybe that's a belt to go with my two suspenders, I also use Carbonite online backup - wirelessly or wired, about $5/month for unlimited storage. Their gotcha is that data is kept while it's on your drive, and then they delete it from your storage 30 days after you delete it from your drive. I had tried other online storage - Mozy, and some others, but at that time, about a year ago, they didn't work reliably. Probably better now. Not sure if they keep data after you delete it from your drive, or for how long after you delete it. I think also that some online storers define "unlimited" differently.
