InDesign 5 changes automatically RGB to CMYK, is possible?
Hello everyone,
First at all, I'm Spanish so I apologize my faults writing.
I always work with RGB (monitor, profile color Adobe, printers, documents, etc...), because all my printers suppliers have this color profile in their prints.
The problem:
When I have a red box in RGB and I paste a PSD document (without background and RGB), automatically the red box change to darker its appearence. And depend on the design of differents page the appearence in PDF is different.
Please, anyone could help me??

First off, you should PLACE, not paste, the art from Photoshop. When you paste you get only the low resolution screen preview.
As for the darkening, I think this may be the same effect that makes type look bolder when you add transparency to a page. It shows up on screen and in low resolution prints, but generally not with press output. You've used a spot color, are you going to press, or are you using a different output method. You really should use spots only when the output method uses real spot ink.
The other thing to check is your transparency flattener blend space. I think in this case you probably want Document RGB, but if it's already set for that, see waht happens if you switch to CMYK. I'm not certain what happens with the spot colors in either option if there is no direct interaction with transparency.

Open the file with Preview, type Command + i to bring up the Info pane and it's color mode and profile will be listed as shown here:
To change the color mode to CMYK you'll need a 3rd party image editor like Photoshotp or GraphicConverter to do it. Why do you need CMYK?

Color profile when changing from RGB to CMYK
I prefer to work on images in RGB then change to cmyk once I'm sure i won't need to run any more effects or filters on them. When I save an image the first time, I have the option to embed my color profile with the image. It embeds the RGB profile... the only option as long as I'm working in RGB. What I've noticed though, is that after converting to cmyk, I don't get any warnings or other indication that it needs me to embed the color profile. I need to do a save-as in order to get back to that option.
So the question is... does Photoshop automatically switch to my default CMYK color profile when I convert to CMYK? So when I save, it's now using the CMYK profile?Save your original RGB file.
Then, RGB file > Edit > Convert to Profile (with CMYK#1) > Save As...
This creates your first CMYK file.
Then, back to original RGB file > Edit > Convert to Profile (with CMYK#2) > Save As...
This creates your second CMYK file.
Then, back to original RGB file > Edit > Convert to Profile (with CMYK#3) > Save As...
This creates your third CMYK file.
In all cases, be sure you have "Embed Color Profile" checked at the bottom of the Save As dialog. When naming a file, it's handy to include some sort of indication as to the color space.
In the end, you have four files: 1 RGB file, 3 CMYK files. -

Placing from Photoshop to InDesign is changing colors of object
I can't find anywhere on the Internet, through about an hour of searching now why my vibrant sRGB objects I made in photoshop look so drab when I place them in an InDesign file.
I don't know if it's being changed from RGB to CMYK...I've tried a few different options from suggestions I found online that sounded like it might be the solution...but am still left with dead looking images.

So, I don't know what's going on or why the color has to be changed like this...but hopefully one of you gurus can tell me how to fix this!
The problem I have is that I created a brochure entirely in photoshop and I really don't like how the text gets pixelated when blown up or how it can't be selected if need be...so I'm recreating the brochure in InDesign...but this whole color change issue is really perturbing me!

In this case, that's probably NOT a good plan. PDF/X-1a converts everything to CMYK and only downsamples images above 450 ppi and then only to 300 ppi. It's meant for press. For email I personally would start with the [High Quailty Print] preset, then use the PDF optimizer in Acrobat Pro to flatten the transparency and downsample the images, to 150 ppi to start, but you may need to go further, and to throw out most of the extraeoous document info your readers don't need (basically check every box except the one to unembed fonts). I think the flattening in Acrobat is better than flattening in ID during export and most of the rest is only available in the PDF optimzer. If you don't have Acrobat Pro, try the Smallest File Size preset in ID.
Keep in mind that there is ALWAYS a tradeoff between file size and image quality. You are shooting for a middle ground. -

In previous versions - changing from RGB to CMYK or vice versa would change the colours slightly but ever since CC when I change one to the other my white
goes brown and there is a yellow tone to the image.
Has anyone else experienced this - it's not slight either see image. I haven't adjusted anything - the original CMYK is on the left and
when I make it RGB - it goes brown.
Has anyone else had this issue?I'd try a new display profile first. Recalibrate, or if you don't have a calibrator use sRGB (or Adobe RGB if your display is wide gamut).
Everything in Photoshop passes through the display profile. If there's a problem with the profile it can happen that one conversion goes bad but not another.
On Windows a common cause for this is bogus manufacturer profiles pushed through Windows Update. Mac isn't as susceptible to this, but there you have an added complication called ColorSync (which is where the actual profile conversions are done). So if a new profile doesn't fix it, you probably need someone with Mac OS X expertise. -
Designing art for both RGB and CMYK
I need to make some artwork that might be viewed in both RGB and printed with CMYK. I know I can switch the color mode after making the artwork, however, I'm concerned with color shifting when changing from RGB to CMYK or the other way around. How do you design something that you can both print and display on screen without compromising the colors?

Even if a given color is within the gamuts of both CMYK and RGB color spaces, that does not necessarily mean that color shifts will not occur.
You can't think of the RGB and CMYK versions of "a color" as "equivalents." There is not just one set of CMYK values for a given set of RGB values. A simple way to think about it is this: Take the product of three numbers. Now divide that number into four factors. Obviously, there is more than just one set of four values possible.
So switching back and forth between RGB and CMYK color spaces in willy-nilly fashon is not good practice. The software has to make a translation decision out of many possibilities. It does it according to your so-called "color management" settings. Even then, the software does not keep a breadcrumb trail of all of your switches back and forth. So colors can still drift.
Design for print first. Then repurpose for web. Color is not the only reason for this.

Essentially, it appears that if you set the Document Color Mode to RGB, it leaves the RGB values that you type in alone. If you set the Document Color Mode to CMYK, it leaves the CMYK values alone.
But as soon as you change the Color Mode, it automatically modifies the values. So if you were in RGB mode and you set some RGB values, it changes those RGB values when you switch to CMYK mode. And vice versa.
I had thought that the CMYK palette was a subset of the RGB palette. It would make sense to me if it did this when I switched from RGB to CMYK mode, but it doesn't make sense to me why it does this when I switch from CMYK to RGB mode.
The other thing I am confused about is the relationship of the values in the RGB boxes to the values in the CMYK boxes. I would have thought that the relationship between them would be static. Actually, it is not. When I am in CMYK mode and I enter a CMYK value of 90 16 0 0, the RGB values become 0 158 222. But when I switch over to RGB mode, the RGB values of 0 158 222 result in CMYK values of 75 23 0 0.

It's not. CMYK color spaces (there are more than just one) are normally smaller than RGB color spaces, but they aren't a "subset".

When Illustrator converts the colors, it uses color management: the profiles you set up and the methods you set up. After converting it forgets the color that used to be. When converting "back", it uses color management again.
When you convert an very bright RGB color, it be out of the CMYK gamut. So it get's converted to the closest possbile CMYK color (which might still be far away from the original color. But it's not possible to convert it "back" to the bright one unless you just revert the conversion (by Cmd/Ctrl + Z). -

Since it quite scriptable (I believe), you need to know exactly (tell to the script) what colors to find and change to what. So it would work only on the specific pre-defined list of colors. I'm using something very similar regarding the fonts (I get regularly files where I need to change bunch of fonts to their alternatives). Not sure if it's possible to modify it for colors - I see some essential differences here. I'm not a scripter...

Change RGB to CMYK in InDesign CC
I can't find the option in the swatch panel anymore. How can I change the colors to CMYK?
The option is still there in the same place, it's just when you click on the swatch options and go to colour mode RGB looks as though it's sitting at the top of the pallette, however you just need to scroll up to reveal the other colour options

Why do the relative values of RGB and CMYK change when switching between Photoshop and InDesign?
I'm trying to put together a Colour Guide for my company's brand guidelines.
I initially worked from InDesign and wrote down all the H, RGB, and CMYK values that I got when I eye-dropped my original colour palette.
However when I put the same RGB values into Photoshop- I am given a (slightly) different set of CMYK numbers from those that I had originally documented in InDesign.

in Photoshop go to Edit > Color Settings and choose your parameters:
For RGB: sRGB or AdobeRGB (1998)
For CMYK: the process as recommended by your printer (person, company)
For offset printing this is here ISOCoated-v2-eci and elsewhere for instance SWOP.
For digital printing you should ask the company as well.
For Grayscale: Gray Gamma 2.2
For Spot: probably irrelevant in the moment. Dot Gain 20%

For your application I've modified my settings a little, therefore we can see top left 'unsynchronized'.
In InDesign do practically the same, but there are no settings for Grayscale.
You'll find for any topic explanations if you move to by mouse (position the pointer over ...).
The field 'Settings' shows not 'Custom' but the file name of a configuration which had been previously saved
and then loaded (buttons top right).
Further explanations on request. It would be quite useless to explain everything now at the same time.
The colors will be wrong if the settings are not synchronized. Above they are explicitly synchronized.
Because Bridge was not used, the system considers them as 'not synchronized', which doesn't matter.

Specific Colour changing Script from RGB to CMYK
I need to change the RGB values (imported from word) to specific CMYK values in Indesign (its not a straight swop) so I need a script or a similar plug-in that enables me to input the colour values for the CMYK so they automatically change.... the doc i work on is huge and im importing from a word file many times so i need to save time!!

Automatically convert from RGB to CMYK color mode
I have over 900 barcodes provided in EPS format. When I open them in illustrator, they are coming in as an RGB color space file. I need them gray scale solid black in CMYK color mode. I can batch using actions to convert the artwork using "Edit Colors > Convert to Grayscale". However, the document color mode remains RGB. It appears, even after using "Convert to Grayscale", that the RGB color mode goofs up the placed .ai file in InDesign, treating it as RGB and seeing it as a mix of CMYK rather than the 100% black only it needs to be for proper sharp printing.
The actions pallet doesn't record converting the document color mode. Is there a way to automate that file conversion so they are all saved as CMYK rather than RGB, or am I stuck opening each of the 900+ files manually?While recording the action, from the popup menu in the Actions Panel choose Insert Menu Item, then from the main menu choose File > Document Color Mode > CMYK color.

How can I get the best results when converting a RGB to CMYK? For example, a tif visual when offset printing... Is there any programme, plug in, machine for this?

I might have said: only use Perceptual if an extremely important color in a photo changes terribly using Relative Colorimetric -- otherwise use that. The reason: The former method can make the whole picture shift (usually yellower and weaker) but the latter can make several distinctly different colors (like 3-5 different reds for example) and make them the same. Usually, one or two really strong colors can get shifted somewhat, but won't be noticeable in an otherwise great looking image.
The secret to converting for good print color is to choose the source and target correctly.
If you are serious about color, buy the book "Real World Color Management" by Bruce Fraser, Chris Murphy and Fred Bunting.

Sadly, Bruce Fraser passed away, so the book may not go to a third edition.But you can still get the second edition and the first 5 or 6 chapters are an education in themselves. -
