Indesign 6: Saving in idml format

When I try to save (or export a file) in idml format, indesign CS6 prodcues a 124-byte file that contains simple "No Editor".
What do I do?

My fault entirely.
When I tried to load the .idml file into BBEdit, I was using a lnk to an old, thrown-out BBEdit version, and that's what caused it.
I thought the editor had opened the file, but it was just the system saying there was no editor.
Thanks. All fixed.

  • InDesign CC crashes when saving as .idml

InDesign CC 9.2 x64  crashes when saving  as .idml. I have triied reinstalling but the problem persists.

Adobe tech support "uncorrupted" the indd file I sent them (a file from
Adobe's Classroom in a Book series) then they saved it as an idml file.
Problem solved -- at least for that file. Thank you. It's still not clear
to me, however, whether this was an isolated incident or something more
systemic. I guess I'll find out the next time I try to save an indd file in
    the idml format.

  • Saving a CC Indesign document as an IDML and then opening in CS5.5

I have InDesign from Creative Cloud. I have designed a new technical manual for my client who has only InDesign 5.5. He wanted me to save the new file I created for him in his version so that he can open the file and make canges to it without having me make the changes. I saved the document as an InDesign CS4 or later (IDML) and sent the file to him. Once he tried opening the file he noticed that all of the fonts were missing and that all of the left aligned tabs that I had created were now centered tabs.
Is this a glitch in the transfer between CC InDesign and CS5.5? Or is it a preferences problem? Is there anyone out there who can help me with this?
I am thinking that if the issue is preferences between the newer version and the older version, then there may not be much I can do or that he can do. I was thinking of just performing a file packaging and sending him that file, but again he wants to have his cake and eat it too, and by that I mean he wants to make changes in the future himself. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Rey

    So thats it?
What about if I package the file, and after the file has been packaged, I open that fil up and then save it as a IDML file and send that along with the rest of the package to my client? Would this not work as well?

  • When I save a CS6 InDesign file as an .idml file InDesign crashes and sends a report to Adobe.

When I save a CS6 InDesign file as an .idml file InDesign crashes and sends a report to Adobe.
When I restart InDesign the .idml file is in the directory as well as a locked InDesign file.
I cannot open the .idml file, instead I get the message:
Cannot open "" file. Adobe InDesign maynot support the file format,
a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing,
or the file may be open in another location.
I can however open an InDesign .idml file that was saved from InDesign CC software.
InDesign CC software is also unable to open the .idml file that I created in CS6.

It seems to be a corrupted IDML file. Does it happen with every file or only with that one.
What is the content of that file? Did you embed images or graphics or did you ink them? Size?
Maybe that this would help you: Re: InDesign 6 is crashing when attempting to open a particular document. All others are opening OK.

  • Can't save IDML format automaticly

Each time I save as IDML in INDesign CC, I have to manually re-choose the IDM file format in the file dropdown in Windows 7. It doesn't just save my open document as it would in any other case. Why do I always have to re enter and choose this file format each and every time although its the same document? It's open and I'm always forced to do the same procedure of manually picking the IDML format every time I hit CTRL+S and that is getting on my nerves. It really shouldn't be like that? The document is open and it should be enough to choose the IDML format the first time I save the document - right? Can't InDesign remember this? Very annoying.

    You have serious workflow issues.
The main one being that all your colleagues should be working in the same version of InDesign as you.
Saving back to IDML so someone with CS6 can open it is not a good workflow. Mostly, any new things that InDesign CC14 can do cannot be translated back to CS6, not to mention any new features that CC15 or CC16 may bring to the table.
Just because your agency/company employs a flawed workflow doesn't mean you guys are doing it correctly!
Just so you know - your workflow is not the norm.
However, I have given you the alternate method of using File>Export and choosing IDML from there will retain it as a sticky.

  • Saving in IDML shifts my text boxes when opened in an earlier version

I am saving my InDesign 2014 files in IDML. When others open it in an earlier version, my text boxes shift and the copy get jumbled. How do I prevent this from happening?

What version of InDesign do "they" run?
Can you show a "before" / "after" after doing a "Select All" also showing the frame edges and the "links" of possibly threaded text frames? Also show "Hidden Text".
Ask for a screenshot from "them".
    Something like that:

  • Copying table data (including images) from InDesign to Excel (or other format such as RTF)

    Hi,
We've got a problem trying to get data from InDesign over to Excel.
There's this pricelist in InDesign, with images and small "icons" (also images) that indicate which item is displayed as the main image for each row in the table. Each "table row" can contain a number of items, separated by Carriage Return + Line Feed or similar combination.
The problem is that we can't get good data and images to appear in any other editable format. Copying and Pasting directly into Excel has yet been the most successful, but there the images are lost. Exporting to PDF and from Acrobat Pro exporting to other formats always seem to fail in one way or another (tables are put on top of each other, images lost and so on, different for different export formats).
The data copied to OpenOffice Calc (then saved as an excel format file). Yellow areas added to show where the images were in InDesign.
Prices blurred in the illustrating image above.
Are there any good ideas how to copy the InDesign table to another editable format (that doesn't require Adobe licenses...)?
    Thanks,
    Andreas

I had not noticed the direct export from InDesign to RTF. You had to put the cursor inside the story to make that option appear!
It looks really good, and I've sent the result on, to the ones who are going to use it, for them to check whether it's good enough, and if they can take it on to excel or work with it in the RTF format as it is.
Thank you so much for pointing out this option!

  • IDML format for sharing between CS5 and CS6

My colleague uses CS6 and I use CS5 so when working on a document together he is able to save in an IDML format. However when either of us then subsequently open this document it opens as Untitled and we then have to re-save the document. This leads to lots of versions of the same document which isnt very useful - is there any way that we can avoid this?
    Thanks

No - it's treated as a brand new file, hence the Untitled.
You need to save it to continue.
Ideally - both of you should be using the same version of InDesign to avoid any compatibility problems.

  • Saving in different formats

I commonly save my photos, when I have worked on them, as .psd files, and then again as .jpg files. Sometimes - not always - when I have saved the .psd file, and then save it as .jpg it adds the word "copy" to the name. Is there any way I can switch this irritating habit off?

Files with layers get saved as copies when saving to a format, like JPEG, that doesn't allow layers. Flatten your image first, or use Save for Web to create your JPEGs.

I really have no idea what kind of file that is and how is the structure, but if it´s valid XML, I guess you could use InDesigns Tags to Styles mapping engine to format incoming stuff....

  • Change codepage in OIM reports saved in CSV format (e.g. UTF8 - Win1251)

    Hello guys.
I have OIM V.9.1 installed on WebLogic. For some reason my customer would like to have OIM reports saved in CSV format encoded with codepage differ from default UTF8 (actually desired codepage is Windows 1251 but it is doesn't matter). I think that there should be a way to change default codepage for OIM reports via OIM's settings.
There is no any information on it in the documentation.
Does anybody already met this problem? Any help would be highly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Ivan

  • I have a document in Tamil language scanned and saved in TDF format. How to edit this?

I have a document in Tamil language scanned and saved in TDF format. How to edit this?

try NeoOffice or OpenOffice. I don't know what apps you have. Pages might open it or TextEdit, but, again, I don't know. All I can do is suggest. If you are really a stickler for format,  if you're on that dell PC again, try saving the document as a .pdf and then putting it on the thumb drive.

  • How may i fill out a form on a scanned form saved in pdf format?

how may i fill out a form on a scanned form saved in pdf format?

With Acrobat you can either add interactive form fields (manually or with the Form Wizard), or you can use the Typewriter tool to add a type of text comment. Exactly how you do either of these depends on which version of Acrobat you're using.
If you only have Reader, there's nothing you can if the document doesn't have interactive form fields or if it hasn't been Reader-enabled to allow use of the typewriter tool or other commenting.

  • How do i open a photo taken with sony p1 camera saved in dsc format on cd?

How do i open a photo taken with sony P1 camera saved in DSC format on a CD?

The P1 looks like a high end video camera not a still photo camera to me and DSC files appear to be support files not photo or movie files
Why do you think that you have photos in a DSC format?
You might give Google a shot and see what you can find but it looks to me like you do not have either image or video files but supporting files - and if you have video files you may have to use iMovie - it is much more robust at working with videos
