Indesign affecting Reader 8.1.2 installation?

I posted this in the Reader forum (subject: Different appearance of
same file) with zero response. Thinking there might be some Adobe
familial interplay at work, I'll try here:
"Can anyone explain why the same PDF file viewed in Reader 8.1.2 on
XPSP3 on two different laptops should look so different? I've posted
side-by-side screenshots of an example ...
This PDF version 1.3 is created in Quark 6.0."
The only pertinent difference between the two machines (apart from
hardware) is that my PC has Indesign CS3 (and Photoshop Elements
6.0) installed, the other one has no other Adobe products. The
offending PDF and a screenshot are at

Thanks for looking, Bob. This only came to light during the
preflight for my B/W publication, where suddenly a single spot
colour was included. I exported the pub to PDF and went hunting for
any colour. It's only in that one advert, which I had received
direct from its designer. In Indesign, it appeared uniformly grey,
but the PDF showed the Pantone background to part of the ad when
viewed in Reader. I then viewed the original PDF of the ad in Reader
and saw the same colour - so it shows in Reader but not in ID. I
checked it on a Mac, where the colour did not show in Reader 8.
Baffled, I viewed it on another PC, also with Reader 8.1.2 - no
colour! That's when I appealed to the Reader forum and then came
here.
I was afraid that the coloured part would appear darker when my pub
was printed, but apparently it looks fine on the printer's machine
too. So - how come one Reader installation shows the coloured
background when seemingly no other does?
You were right, of course - my Reader was set to Overprint preview,
and I found out that the designer had simply taken a blue business
card he'd made for the same client and applied a larger grey
intermediate layer to bring it up to our standard size for ads. His
laziness and my ignorance have cost me hours of frustration! I
couldn't care a hoot about his wretched torch.

  • Problems with InDesign CS5 reading EXIF data

Hi there - my first post.  Been searching all over for a solution but no one else seems to have this problem.
I'm trying to create a picture book using InDesign and have JPEG's loaded in direct from many cameras (HTC, Canon etc.)
I'm creating captions using either Live Caption or manually to show the description and exposure details.
InDesign can always read the caption and tags (if it's been set by Picasa in the IPTC tag) but it never shows the EXIF camera details - it just shows <No data from link>.   In the links section if you right click on the image and open XMP File Info you can see all the EXIF info is there.
Even dragging images from Bridge does not help.
The only way I can make InDesign read them is to get Adobe Bridge to modify the image by completing a random IPTC field.  Bridge won't let you modify EXIF, so presumably that does not get changed, so why that helps I do not know.
Is there any way to get InDesign to read EXIF's first off?
    Thanks, Simon

It's been a long time since I looked at this.  While I was able to solve the problem using EXIFTOOL to process that JPEG files (and write XMP) I decided against including the metadata into the InDesign book as it would mean processing all my images, and having to remember to process any new photos I take.  Book is behind schedule so I cut it all out.
I changed the code that was submitted by John, and made the following .bat file that sits in the same folder as EXIFTOOL.  The .bat files contains:
    %0\..\exiftool.exe -overwrite_original -TagsFromFile %* -@ exif2xmp.args %*
    pause
In order for this to work, you need the exif2xmp.args file.  I didn't know where it was supposed to be located but put it in the same dir as EXIFTOOL and the bat file above and it worked.  I got the file somewhere from the EXIFTOOL website - think its in the full archive that they provide.
To use it, you can drag multiple files onto the .bat file in Windows and they are processed.  N.B. this overwrites the original photos, so make a backup if you are unsure.

I do not understand what this means.  What is your %WINDIR% environment variable?
Is there any error message you are getting during the install?
Contents displayed as black indicates an outdated graphics driver.

  • Everytime Adobe Reader 9 is extracting installation files, about half way, Windows XP SP3 reboots

Everytime Adobe Reader 9 is extracting installation files, about half way, Windows XP SP3 reboots. Therefore, I am unable to install the Adobe Reader on my computer. I would appreciate any help you can provide.

Thanks for the replies. I have followed most of the suggestions given in "Test Screen Name" response. Unfortunately, I have not been able to correctly identify and eliminate rootkit infections (viruses), if any. Furthermore, even when I try to install Adobe Reader X, the system freezes when about 53% of the installation is complete. I am still trying to figure this problem out.
    Good news!
I just installed Adobe Reader 11 and it worked beautifully!
    Thanks again for your suggestions.

  • Adobe Acrobat Reader 8.1.2 Installation failed.

Has anyone successfully install Adobe Acrobat Reader ver. 8.1.2?
I'm running 10.5.2. Perhaps Adobe needs to put out a version for 10.5.2, d@mn it....I should have stay with 10.5.1 until other softwares are updated.

    that is interesting. hmmm...
I tried installing Acrobat Reader 8.2.1 from scratch (failed), since I didn't have one installed prior. I had settled for the older version 7.x for now. Btw! upgrading from 7.x failed as well. So, I think there's an issue with the Acrobat Reader 8.2.1 installer, it breaks @ 1/3 way. I'll wait for a little while and see if Adobe push out a newer version, hopefully soon.
I have a thought. See if you can install it in the Safe mode. It may be a conflict with a driver or app that is disabled in the Safe mode, which might allow you to install it.
You might also contact Abode and tell them about the situation. The version I have, 8.1.2 is their latest version and it's dated last May, so it's almost a year old.
I note you refer to Adobe 8.2.1. I assume that a typo.

No need to worry about the disk version. You would just have to install an update anyway as soon as it was installed. Download from the link provided below and use the serial number you have to activate.

  • Reader install failing but installer says it completed successfully

I am trying install Acrobat Reader 9 on a Windows XP Pro machine.
The download manager starts, says it is downloading and installing installing the reader, it completes the download, then it says installation was successful, and the download and installation progress bar is at a 100% but it hangs at that point.
Tried closing the download manager it say it is still installing an application, close anyway, and check sure enough Acrobat Reader is not installed.
If I try relaunch, it just goes straight to showing that installation is complete.
At this point if you check add/remove programs the download manager is listed but Acrobat Reader is not.  If reboot, then neither the download manager or Acrobat Reader is listed.
At this point if I go back to the download page, and relaunch the whole process it starts with wanting to install the download manager again.
I have tried this with Anti-virus both enabled and disabled with no affect.

Assuming that you want to download the English version of the latest Adobe Reader 9.2, you can download it directly (without the DLM) here http://ardownload.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/9.x/9.2/enu/AdbeRdr920_en_US.exe
If it is a different version you want, navigate to your version on the FTP server ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/9.x/

SInce this is the Acrobat forum and not the Reader forum, I have no idea. You might try the Reader forum for the Adobe Reader product. There has not been an Acrobat Reader since version 5, and then it was also a different product.
