INDESIGN AND LINKED FILES FOR VERSIONNING

Hi Everyone,
Despite the fact Indesign is an amazing tool, i'm very frustrated about the way images links are managed, and especially when you copy a folder that contains indesign files linked to images.
When you want to make a new version of your files, by copying the original folder with all files, the copy of the original indesign file is still recognizing the linked images in the original folder and not the images in the new folder.
To force Indesign to check the path of the images in the new folder and to update links with the new images, the only way i found is to change the name of the original folder.
I get the same problem with an indesign book linked with many different individual indesign files.
i know there is a solution to package all images in the same folder, but this way will lot keep the structure of my folders and my files.
As relinking manually each file could be a nightmare, i wonder if someone know a solution to avoid this ?
Thanks a lot

This seems to me to be in direct  opposition to what you just said. Either you want one central repository for your linked files where you keep single copies organized in some way that makes sense to your workflow, or you want individual copies of each linked file that is used only for that particular version. If you want only one linked file that is reused, you want any copied .indd file to continue to use the old path. If you want to modify linked files and have the modified files available only to the current version, packaging is a viable option.
It sounds to me like you would like ID to use relative links rather than absolute. That's not the way it works now, but you can make a feature request at Adobe - Feature Request/Bug Report Form

This will work for online storage.
The preview you will see on the website but will be what you see on your desktop if the the folder was missing. If you want someone else to be able to see a preview online to give comment feedback you could export out a PDF file of the work-in-progress and upload it.
If you just want to work on the project at different locations it might be easier to zip up everything into a single file and upload it. Then download it onto the computer where you want to work and unzip it.

  • Moving indesign files (.indd) and link files

    Hi guys
How can I move indesign files (.indd) and link files to another folder without breaking the link? or recreate the link.
I couldnt find any good answer.
    Thanks

As per my knowledge, such scenario is not supported by product, these links are of "absolute" type (let Adobe team prove I am wrong).
If you have 360 files and need to rename/move the whole project, the only reasonable way is to write a script that would find and update all references with new location.
The only other trick that comes to my mind is to manipulate the file system (NTFS or whatever Mac OS X uses), i.e. create a hardlink for folder, and/or bunch of softlinks for files, between old and new location, so that from the program's point of view the path and filenames would be the same. A sort of a quick & dirty hack.
But it only makes sense to do so, if you do not need to reuse old location and filenames. A script to fix broken links, especially if you handle and support it yourself, will resolve this problem forever.

    3. Boot from MS-DOS boot diskette and get a:\> prompt.
    4. Type "", then press ENTER
    5. The flash program will then ask "Do you want to save BIOS?", please press "N" for no. The when you see Press 'Y' to program or 'N' to Exit, please press "Y" to continue.

    Drivers & Needed Files:
(Note: All these drivers are for Windows XP.)
Leaked Nvidia nForce3 Chipset Drivers Version 4.40
(Please use at your own risk, these are LEAKED drivers. Password for the .zip file is "ocworkbench rules". Also, you will need to rename the WinXP_2K folder in IDE to either WinXP or Win2K else the installer doesn't pick it up.) Thanks for the link Wonkanoby!
*NEW* Leaked Nvidia nForce3 Chipset Drivers Version 5.03
More leaked drivers? Seems some parts of the drivers are older and some are newer.
    1. Windows XP Service Pack 1A (Web Install) -or- Windows XP Service Pack 1A (Full Install)
    2. Microsoft DirectX 9.0b (Web Install) -or- Microsoft DirectX 9.0b (Full Install)
    3. Nvidia nForce3 Chipset Drivers Version 4.24
    4. AMD Athlon 64 Processor Driver Version 1.1.0.14
    5. Nvidia Video Card Driver Version 56.72 -or- Omega Nvidia Video Card Driver Version v1.5303
(The Omega drivers are third party drivers optimized for gaming, most prefer these over the standard Nvidia drivers.)
    5. ATI Video Card Driver Version 4.7 -or- Omega ATI Video Card Driver Version 2.5.51
(The Omega drivers are third party drivers optimized for gaming, most prefer these over the standard ATI drivers.)
    6. Onboard Sound Driver (Realtek AC'97 Audio Codec) Version A3.61
It is HIGHLY reccomended that you install the drivers/needed files in the order listed above. Please note that there are two #5's because you either install one or the other depending on your video card, do not install both of them.
You will come across a problem here though. You can't install the chipset drivers without installing the Windows service pack and DirectX first, but the Windows service pack and DirectX installs need the internet to download files and you won't have working internet until you install the chipset drivers. Here's what I did to get around this. Instead of downloading the web install versions of Windows service pack and DirectX, download the full version and and put them along with all the other drivers on a backup hard drive or burn them to a CD, this way you will have all the drivers you need when it's time to install them and none of them will require the internet to download files.
Another note when installing drivers. Apparently the Nvidia chipset drivers also come with drivers for the onboard sound, but people seem to agree that the Realtek onboard sound drivers are better. When you are installing the Nvidia chipset drivers, just be sure to uncheck the box for sound drivers when it asks you which drivers you would like to install. Now you can safely install the Realtek drivers without any chance of conflicting sound drivers. Thanks for the tip Wonkanoby!

oh.  IIRC the installer just says USB 2.0 will be fully functional after SP1 is installed.  So after you install SP1 you go into device manager and u click update driver and it will auto search and update the driver.
Simplicity-wise, i guess its pretty much equal.  It might take less preparation to just copy DX9 full onto a CD and install that first, then nforce driver, then right away you have yoru internet connection.

  • Sequence of Installs of RTA and SCA files for GRC AC 5.3

    Hello,
I would like to confirm the correct sequence of applying RTA and SCA files for GRC AC 5.3.
    On ABAP Stack
1- Install VirsaNH RTA on ECC 6.0 System with SAINT
2- Install VirsaHR RTA on ECC 6.0 system which has SAP_HR
3- Install both VirsaNH RTA and VIRSAHR RTA on a system which is SAP HR
4- Install VIRSANH RTA on BI System. (There is no need of VirsaHR on BI system)
5- Install all Support Packages up to 10 or 11 for VIRSANH & VIRSAHR with SPAM
    Next
    On JAVA Stack
    6- Install
    VIRCC00_0.sca
    VIRAE00_0.sca
    VIRRE00_0.sca
    VIRFF00_0.sca
    7- Install VIRACLP00_0.sca
    8- Then install VIRACCNTNT.SAR
9- Next install EP RTA VIREPRTA00_0.sca
10- Install all Java patches for the above components
    Based on the above,
a- Plz confirm if the above sequence is right.
b- My question is can I install 6, 7,8, 9 with JSPM at once as one step?
c- Also can I install SCA files with JSPM first and then install RTA files on ABAP stack later?
d- Also we have BI system with ABAP & JAVA Stacks. Is VIRSANH sufficient for both ABAP & JAVA, or do we need an additonal RTA for BI JAVA ?
Thanks for your valuable inputs in advance.

  • I want to re-install Premiere Elelments 8, but cannot find downloads for version 8.  Where can I download the files for version 8?

I want to re-install Premiere Elelments 8, but cannot find downloads for version 8.  I have the serial no.  Where can I download the files for version 8?

Hi Jeff.  I did purchase Premiere Elements 8 from Adobe (download version), but couldn't find the files to download again on the adobe.com website.  I did, however carry out another search of files from my old PC and eventually found the files to reinstall on my new PC, using my registered product serial no.  Installation has worked.  It seems that Adobe has stopped supporting version 8 as I could only find version 9 and later for download from the adobe.com website.
    Thanks for your prompt reply

  • Virtualbox - install build and header files for your current kernel

I have initially installed virtualbox before upgrading the Arch
Also took backup of the kernle before upgrading since kernel26 2.6.30 is having problem with virtualbox
After upgrading I have configure the grub to use the previous kernel i.e 2.6.28
Later  installed xorg and want to install the video drivers from VBox additions
    but running
    sh VBoxLinuxAdditions_x86.run
    i get the following
install build and header files for your current kernel
The current kernel version is 2.6.28 Arch
What are the build and header files I have to install or search with pacman
And since i have upgraded the system will I able to look up the header and build files needed for kernel 2.6.28

dmartins - he's talking about his kernel's headers, not the kernel-headers package - they are two very differnet things.
sant527 - when you backed up the 2.6.28 kernel, did you remember the files in /usr/src/linux-2.6.28-ARCH/ ? They're what VBox is looking for.

  • Could someone please recommend the best program to convert AVI and MPEG files for use (and exporting) into IMovie 11?

Hi - I understand I need to convert AVI and MPEG files for use within IMovie 11. I have one particular file that has a watermark stating "Created with Flip4Mac WMV Demo". Can someone please recommend the best program for a novice?  Thanks!

    Hi Susan,
It is no simpler converting vobs to mp4 than mpg (mpeg2).
There is *always* a loss of quality converting video from one lossy-compressed format to another, e.g. mpeg2 to mp4.
So, if you want to not lose any quality, then converting vobs to mpeg2 (mpg) is the thing to do (since there will be no video/audio re-compression), assuming Lr5 will accept them (sorry, but I do not know). example commands:
    Mac: ffmpeg -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mpg
    Win: ffmbc -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mpg
If Lr5 won't accept them, then you can convert to mp4 with minimal quality loss using a command like:
    Mac: ffmpeg -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mp4
    Win: ffmbc -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mp4
You may need variations of these commands depending on encoding of vob.
Note: -i means -input-file; -sameq means -same-quality, as much as possible.
ffm... is smart enough to avoid re-encoding, if possible, when -sameq is used, and makes reasonable choices for audio/video codecs based on extension of output file.
Of course, you'll need to download/install ffm... program if not already on your machine, and execute commands in a terminal or command window.
Do keep us posted please .

    Rob

  • A good viewer for photoshop, indesign and illustrator files.

    Hello everyone.
I work at an designers firm, and we are avid users of the Adobe Creative Suite. However, it's expensive software, and certain people at the company only have to view the files we create. It's a bit of a hassle to create PDFs for them, and it's expensive to get full CS6 licenses for people who just view the software.
So my question is: is there any good software to view these file types simultaneously?
    Thanks!

Any bog standard image viewer like IrfanView can display PSDs - if they are saved with maximum compatibility. Of course without any color management, so colors may be off and CMYK files look whacky. Other than that your chances are slim. Without the proprietary Adobe libraries in place there is simply no way to "understand" ID and AI files beyond the occasional icon thumbnail based on the PDF-compatible data in the file...

  • Manage multiple InDesign and pdf files

I'm looking for help managing multiple pdf files created from InDesign. I make several catalogs from multiple InDesign files. Each InDesign file could be used in multiple catalogs. These catalogs are output as pdf files. The pdf files are sent to print and also live on our website. I could update one InDesign file for a particular catalog. That same file could also be in another catalog that should be updated as well. The online version would need to be updated also. This doesn't always happen. There are so many things that have to be updated manually.
I know this is confusing and vague. I'm guessing there has to be a way to not have to do everything manually. There has to be a smarter way to do this.
I would appreciate any suggestions or even a push in the right direction for research.
    Thanks!

You know you can place InDesign files directly into another InDesign file.
Then when you update the master indesign file you will be prompted to update your links in any other document that this appears in.

  • PackageForPrint and Link Files

    Hi,
For one of our clients we are using the above function to create an INDD file from an INX file.  It all works fine until the InDesign Server is on a different box geographically from the files in the link folder.  I appreciate the files have to be pulled from the original location onto the InDesign Server to create the INDD file (or at least I am assuming that is the case), but currently the code is copying the files back to the original server for the link folder, which we don't need (files and links are held in a 3rd party app outside of InDesign).
Anyway, theanswer was to change the parameters so the link folder isn't created - easy!  However, in doing this, my Instructions.txt file no longer contains the filenames of the missing files which it did when I was copying the link files across as well.  My question therefore is, is there an easy way to generate an INDD fle from an INX file without creating the links folder but still getting the information from somewhere over which files are missing (rather than the current "Links and Images: 8 Links Found; 0 Modified, 1 Missing" without the list underneath!
Thanks in advance - the only way I can currently see myself achieving the goal is to check if there are missing links and then use packageForPrint AND generate the links folder - thus enabling me to interrogate the Instructions.txt and get the file names - slight overkill methinks!
    Cheers,
    Al

    Hi all,
I think maybe I have over complicated this post
Basically my question is, when I call the packageForPrint method why is the list of files missing in the instructions.txt depending on whether you check the "Copy Linked Graphics" - parameter when exporting a Package.
    Thanks

  • Serializable transactions and initrans parameter for version enabled tables

    Hi,
we want to use serializable transactions when using version enabled tables, so we need to set initrans parameter >= 3 for such tables.
Change made during BEGINDDL - COMMITDDL process is not done for LT table. I think that initrans parameter is not checked at all during BEGINDDL-COMMITDDL process, because skeleton table has initrans=1 even if LT table has different value of this parameter.
    -- table GRST_K3_LT has initrans = 1
    exec dbms_wm.beginddl('GRST_K3');
    alter table grst_k3_lts initrans 3;
    exec dbms_wm.commitddl('GRST_K3');
    -- table GRST_K3_LT has initrans = 1
During enableversioning this parameter is not changed, so this script succesfully set initrans for versioned tables.
    -- table GRST_K3 has initrans = 1
    alter table grst_k3 initrans 3;
    exec dbms_wm.enableversioning('GRST_K3','VIEW_WO_OVERWRITE');
    -- table GRST_K3_LT has initrans = 3
    We use OWM 10.1.0.3 version.
We cannot version disable tables. I understand that change can be done after manually disabling trigger NO_WM_ALTER.
Are there any problems with using serializable transactions when reading data in version enabled tables? We will not use serializable transactions for changing data in version enabled tables.
    thanks for Your help
    Jan VeleÅ¡Ãk

    Hi,
You are correct. We do not currently support the initrans parameter during beginDDL/commitDDL. However, as you indicated, we will maintain any value that is set before enableversioning. If this is a critical issue for you, then please file a TAR and we can look into adding support for it in a future release.
Also, there are no known issues involving serializable transactions on versioned tables.
    Thanks,
    Ben

  • I give up! Can I send someone the ID CS3 file and print file for Help

I have done everything I possibly can (given I am no where near expert), and can not figure this printing out.
I have a food menu that is on 11 x 17 (will be tri fold) ID file with a border. The border is a "Placed" PSD file into a separate ID layer.
Even though it looks perfect on the screen, I can not get it to print properly using an Epson Stylus 1400 series printer (wide body).
The border does not print correctly.
I can (and will if you want), print the menu to a file and send it to someone (along with the ID CS3 file and PSD file) to see if someone can tell me what stupid things I am doing.
I also believe I can print to a file, then bring the printed file up on the screen and do a Snagit Screen Grab to upload to pixentral.com If this is possible, you will see how the border did not print correctly. I would also take a screen grab of the ID CS3 menu file so you can see how the border is perfect.
I am hoping someone with a wide body printer can load 11 x 17 paper and try to see what I am doing wrong. I am printing it on 11 x 17, landscape, centered borderless stock and it looks good in preview mode.
Any and all help would be appreciated. At least I don't have those OOLLM phantom lines like I did on my last plea for help.
    Bob

    Hmmm.
Looking at the last picture, I see what is going to be a bit of a problem for you, I think. Do you really have a thin red line around the outside of the yellow border?
Here's how bleeds work, and why they are set up the way they are. Printing, and more importantly, trimming, is done on mechanical equipment. Paper sizes may or may not be entirely uniform in a stack, or there may be minor alignment issues when jogging the stack, or there may be dust build-up, or any number of other little things that conspire to keep a stack of prints from being 100% perfectly aligned with each other, or a cutter setting may be off by a few thousandths of an inch making the trim larger than intended. In such cases there is a possibility that color intended to run all the way to the edge of the page may in fact stop short of the trimmed edge, leaving the paper showing.
To hide this, and that's all you are doing, hiding misalignments, areas of color at the edge of the page are extended beyond the page boundary, typically 1/8" in the US, so that the excess color will fill what would otherwise be a blank area after trimming. InDesign Allows you to set up a "Bleed Area" in the document setup, which adds a colored guide around the page for easy reference, and also allows you to check the "use Bleed Area" checkbox in the print dialog so you don't need to specify it manually.
Now for why that narrow red line is a problem, if it is really there. Printing presses typically can maintain sheet to sheet registration that is very accurate, but desktop printers are often off by as much as 1/16" in either direction from sheet to sheet. Further, there can be some paper stretching during the printing process, and the aforementioned dust build-up or slight errors in cutter setup, which can cause the paper to be trimmed slightly inside the intended mark. Also consider that if the paper is cut outside the mark on one edge, it will be cut the same distance inside on the opposite side.
So, if you have a thin line on the edge of the page, you need to be very accurate in both sheet-to-sheet registration AND in cutter setup or you risk cutting off the line on one or two edges completely, and leaving more than you planned on the opposite edges. The thinner the border is, the greater the risk of cutting it off, and the more small differences in position will show. (The difference between 1/16 and 1/8 is much more obvious than the difference between 1/16 and 3/8 )
As a corollary, jobs that bleed need to have a safe zone, or "live area" that is smaller than the page dimension by at least the amount of the bleed allowance all around so that trimming at the outside of the bleed on one edge doesn't end up cutting off something important on the opposite edge. The easiest way I can think of to visualize this is to think of trimming as if you were putting an open frame the finished size on top of the print, and you move it around so that the hole exposes more on one edge while hiding the opposite edge the same amount.

  • Opening InDesign and Photoshop files

Why can't I see any .indd or .psd files in my Gallery (Android)? I know they're there - can see them in my file manager.

    Hi NeithLeigh
The native Gallery app is meant for just standard image formats and does not support product specific formats, not even Adobe products. If you have InDesign or Photoshop files you wanted to import into Adobe Debut; the best way to do so is to upload your .psd and .indd files to the Adobe Creative Cloud Files website https://creative.adobe.com/ from your desktop and then import them into Adobe Debut on your tablet through the Creative Cloud option.
