Indesign and MathType fonts

I am having trouble getting Indesign to recognize MathType fonts.  I have been told to move the MathType fonts over two the Indesign Font folder.  I copied the MT-extra font file from MathType folder and pasted it into the Indesign font folder.  Nothing changed.  Indesign still gives me a blank box after I copy an MT-extra font from MathType -->Illustrator-->Indesign.   I guess I need instructions on how to get this transfer of fonts done correctly.  I'v looked at the Install fonts manual for Indesign, its not clear to me on how to do it.  Do I need a Utility like FontExplorer to do this, or is there some other way.  What's so weird about all this is that everything was working fine until I had to reinstall OSX and reinstall CS3, then this font trouble started.  Do I need to toggle "activate-reactivate' the Adobe CS3 , I don't know how close I am to the 20 max on this, so I worried about that.  (I only suspect this because of a note on another forum that this might be necessary).  Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I worry about copying between the programs, so perhaps do an experiment where you compare pasting with placing. But first off, I'd skip the step of putting fonts in the Indesign folder, apparently it hasn't worked. Search your entire system and delete all but one copy of MT Extra. Make sure you've only got one version of Symbol too, if possible. If you download the free Font Explorer from Linotype, you can get it to consolidate all of your fonts which makes it easy to spot and delete extra copies. It could be that Indesign and Mathtype are using slightly different versions of fonts with the same names. Note that Adobe, MathType, and Apple have all kindly provided you with a font called Symbol, and while they're mostly the same, they aren't quite, and if different programs prefer different Symbol fonts you may get the empty character boxes. I found Font Explorer invaluable to get rid of duplicate Symbol fonts.
Create an equation that uses an MT Extra character, also throw in some large brackets (like parentheses around a fraction) and some other stuff that you typically use. Save it as an eps file.
Distill the eps file to pdf.
Copy the equation material to the clipboard.
Now go to Indesign and try three methods of placing it in the file: paste it. Place the eps. Place the pdf. View as high quality, and try printing the page. If one of these methods works better than the other, I'd use it from now on. And do your best not to change your Symbol font once you've got one that works. I once made that mistake and could no longer print older MathType equations until I reopened and saved them. And I had a lot at the time...

  • Reinstalling OSX10.4 and Indesign looses MathType fonts

I have been using MathType to create formulas.  First I copy from MathType into Illustrator, then proceed to copy from illustrator and paste into Indesign.  This procedure has worked well, until I needed to reinstall my OS system.  After reinstalling OS10.4, my Indesign docs have replaced some fonts with boxes.  I have reinstalled CS3 and MathType 6.0 with no solution to this problem.  I still get boxes for certain fonts (like MT extra).  I do not know how to fix this, any light on this problem would be greatly appreciated.  I have several hundred pages of documents that have been affected in this bad way.

Yes, you just drag them where you want them. But from your described work path, you actually want the fonts to be available in MathType, in Illustrator, AND in Indesign, so I wouldn't put them in the Indesign folder -- that makes them only available to Indesign. MathType is a real bear for fonts, because it's version of Symbol and Adobe's version of Symbol don't get along, which has been a pain-in-the-tush for me. I suspect the root cause is that MathType mostly is interested in working smoothly with Microsoft Word, and Indesign is a lesser concern, and you know Microsoft is going to use their own proprietary version of the Symbol font. (The problem characters are the large "fences" for putting brackets and parens around equations, and some unusual Greek characters like the upside-down capital Delta. These often show up onscreen but don't print.)
What I would do is after you reinstall OSX 10.4, reinstall the MathType fonts, particularly Symbol and MT Extra. Be aware that the CS4 applications keep their own version of Symbol that they rely on hidden in an Adobe folder, and I've found that it you remove it and replace it with the MathType one, horrible things can happen.
For a font manager, I use FontExplorer from Linotype, which is a freebie and works very well. It doesn't "auto-activate" fonts in CS4, but you do get a list of missing fonts when you open a document, and you can toggle over to Font Explorer and open them. If you've created font groups by project, you can turn them on with one click. When you return to your CS4 app, it'll work.
FontExplorer also has several nice utilities -- one that strips the System folder of all fonts not installed by OSX, so you can move spurious fonts from Microsoft and various other programs to Font Explorer's folders, which makes it easy to turn them off when you don't want them, and keep your font menus from being three miles long. And another utility that deletes font "caches" in applications, which you'll want to do after you've messed about with the various forms of Symbol and MT Extra, so that your CS4 applications don't remember a version of the font that's no longer there.

  • Indesign and mathtype

    Hi,
We are typesetting a book using mathtype. We thought we cleaned our fontfolders, working very clean, using the accompanied fonts for mathtype. But, despite all our efforts, we keep having problems using the symbol font.
One day everything is fine, the next day, the symbol is missing. Well, not actually missing, some characters are missing, for instance, the pi-symbol, the delta-symbol. It's like it's using another symbol when displaying in Indesing. In mathtype it's always correct. When asking Indesign for a high-resolution preview, the pi, delta's are missing. When generating a pdf, those characters are also missing. I can't figure out if one of the programs is using a symbol form another place than the fontfolder. Maybe it's using the symbol in adobe's required font folder instead of the mathtype symbol.
    Anyone any thought's?

    HI,
Well, that's where the trouble begins. I've cleaned the folders and even de-activated the system symbol font. According to fontbook there is only one symbol active, the mathtype symbol.
Nonetheless, when opening a mathtype equation in mathtype, they look ok, when looking at the highres preview in Inidesign, pi, delta's are missing or sometimes changed in a different character.
Somertime's when closing the document on friday with no font issues, is not a guarantee that on monday everything is fine.
It looks as if Indesign uses another Symbol. I don't know if it uses the symbol from the
hd:library:application support:adobe:fonts. In the required folders is a symbol.

  • Euclid Symbol Bold and Italic fonts not working in Indesign CS5

Hi I created some Maths Text books about 5 years ago in an older Adobe Indesign program. I now have to re-edit the files using Indesign CS5.
The Euclid Symbol Bold and Italic fonts i used back in 2005 now do not display in Indesign 5 when i open up the program. The other Euclid Symbol Fonts do. I think that they are all truefonts.
    I have attached an example.
I am using a Mac running OSX 10.6.8.
http://www.dessci.com/en/support/mathtype/tsn/tsn109.htm    <-- this is an error log from 'MathType' the guys who created the font - yet unsure what this actually means for me
    Here is the example

Congratulations on fixing the problem yourself! Hopefully our article (to which you linked) was of some help in that process. Let us know if you need anything else.

  • I am pulling my hair out! I am using adobe indesign and just want to make a text box 'autofit text' as I change fonts a lot and want the font to automatically re-size as I change it. help help help please - I have latest version of indesign - thanks

I am pulling my hair out! I am using adobe indesign and just want to make a text box 'autofit text' as I change fonts a lot and want the font to automatically re-size as I change it.
Is it not possible to create a text box, fill it with dynamic (data driven) text, but make the font size either scale up or down automatically, so that the entire text box is filled? This is a feature in PrintShop Mail Pro called COPY FIT. but no such feature in Indesign??
help help help please - I have latest version of indesign - thanks, DJ

lol... it seems to work, but I have another huge problem!
Apparently .CSV files cannot contain page breaks in the data! The data I am trying to merge is a 'letter', with paragraphs, line breaks, etc.,
But, after data merging, it ignores page breaks and only merges the first paragraph of each letter. (sigh)
Solution? Hopefully, an EASY solution. lol as we have thousands of records.
Is there a third party indesign plugin that will allow .xml, or .xls data merge import??
    Thx,
    DJ

  • Fonts jagged in InDesign and PDF export

I've been troubleshooting this issue for days, with no success. I'm using IDCS6 on a MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion, and it probably happens with all fonts, but I've noticed it specifically with "Din mittelschrift" at a large pt. size and 100% magnification. It wouldn't be a terrible thing, since it's not noticeable in most of the document, but I'm trying to create a catalog of sorts (as a series of 2-page spreads) and the brand's name on the cover has the most obnoxiously rough edges - I can't send the PDF off to anyone in this condition.
I'm an experienced computer user but an InDesign novice, so I've been trying various things I've found online that successfully solved others' problems, without having a very clear idea of what many things in ID do. Reading a few Adobe tutorials didn't enable me to fix things, either.
I've seen others post that jagged-looking fonts can clear up when exported to a PDF, but that didn't work. When I export to a PDF, interactive or not, it appears jagged at 100% - though strangely enough, at 300% it looks fine.
I checked my ID display settings. It's jagged even at High Quality - and display settings in InDesign wouldn't affect the PDF, anyway.
I made sure the font was installed in the proper place (Library/Fonts), cleared my font cache, and restarted the computer.
I tried converting the text to outlines in InDesign.
I tried setting the opacity to 99.9%.
I changed the color of the text to a grey (240/240/240) to reduce the contrast in case that was an issue.
The rest of the document appears fine in InDesign and as a PDF. No extreme jagged edges or low-quality appearance.
Right now the document is intended to only be viewed on a screen, but since I'm unsure if I'll ever be asked to prepare it for printing I created it using ID's print layout. I've been avoiding converting it to a web layout because that would mean hours of reformatting, and I figure that fonts should render with smooth edges no matter what the layout is set as.
I think I've done more than what's listed above, but forgotten the specifics.
I'll try anything short of destroying the catalog and starting over.
    Thank you!

Can you take a screenshot of what this looks like and post it?
Also, I've noticed that sometimes weird crap will show up when you view something in Acrobat. Like you can see a line between the font and the stroke, but when you zoom way in, it looks fine. It will print fine as well. Just a display issue. Can you print it? When you print it does it look like crap?

Here's a positive thing: Windows viruses can't run on OS X, but they can be transferred from OS X to other PCs (only if you have them on the OS X volume).

You could get a virus from a different source that infected Steam and Chrome without any problem. Viruses normally try to infect as many files and programmes as possible.

  • Font management with InDesign and Windows 7

    Hello
I am presently looking to upgrade to Windows 7 and use InDesign CS4.  I have had a play with installing postscript type 1 fonts using the windows font manager and it seems absoloutley average, but it worked (I think).  I was wondering if you had any suggestions of what would be best practice in this setup.

    Thanks
    Gunasekaran

I don't remember seeing this exact problem, but I've had numerous issues with Indesign CS4 / MathType. (Though it really blew up in CS5, which no longer recognizes the obliqued Symbol font used by MathType, and replaces it with a generic font). Design Science told me that their next update -- which is waiting on the next update to MS Word for Mac, originally due this fall -- would fix the problems, and I wish them much luck.
First, I'd try Exporting to PDF rather than going through a PS file stage. It's generally more reliable.
I'd also clean out the font caches from Indesign CS.
If that doesn't work, examine your computer closely for different versions of the Symbol font. There's probably one in the system library from Apple, one or two in your User library (like the Truetype and Postscript versions that came with MathType), maybe one a gift from Microsoft, and probably one in the Adobe applications folders as well. Unfortunately, they're all slightly different. Conflicts between these may be causing your trouble. Delete or remove all but one, and see if your applications still run -- you probably want to open and save each equation from MathType using the "new" font, then update links in Indesign after each change, so working on a test document with one equation would be best. If one font works, stick with that one.
I'm sincerely hoping that in the next version of MathType we'll be able to use OpenType fonts for the Greek characters -- Symbol has gotten pretty buggy over the years.

  • Chinese Font and English Font in one paragraph

I am working on a book translated from English into Traditional Chinese, using Indesign CS4 under WinXP sp3. In many cases I need to put English words among Chinese Characters. I set up Character Styles to apply the English Fonts I want, then doing word by word manually. Besides of the slow speed, it's easy to make mistakes doing by hand. I desperatly want to find a way to set up PARAGRAPH STYLES that I can specify both Chinese and English Fonts in a same paragraph stye. Will be very apprecited if someone please teach me how to get it.

Yes it can be done in CS4.  I am doing a billingual book in Chinese and English.  What you can do is select the paragraph,
    1. Open "Paragraph styles", double click - "Basic Paragraph", Select "Basic Character Formats", Change the Font to a Chinese Character (e.g. SimSun and the size is 12)
    2. Don't close the box, then select "GREP Style", select "New GREP Style", click "Apply Styel" and Select "New Character Style"
    3. a New Character Style Box comes up, then select "Basic Character Formats" and select the English Character (e.g. Arial and the size is 14), then OK.
    4. Will back to Paragraph styles box, then click "To Text" and select "Wildcards" and select "Any Letters", then click OK. It is done!!
I tried many ways before, and how I am getting used to it.  Remember, if you have many different styles need to be set, (for example: Title (with both languages), contents (with both languages), you can set different Character's Name for different purposes when the "New Character Style" box comes up.

  • Purchasing and Licensing Fonts for use in Book (Garamond Pro)

I'm planning to design a book in InDesign and I'd like to use Adobe's Garamond with all of its special extras (titling capitals, small caps, italic alternates etc.)
I was about to buy the font package at myfonts.com, then sign up for InDesign, but I'm wondering if this font is already included in InDesign and, if so, is it complete?
Also, if I use the Creative Cloud can I use any fonts in it that I've already purchased licenses for?
Finally, do I need a special license for a printed book or is that included in the desktop license?

    Hi Badmonkeyart,
Please confirm the version name of InDesign.
However, for CS6 you can refer the following page which having the detailed information about default fonts included.
Font related documentation for Creative Suite 6
    Hope this helps.

  • Indesign and filemaker

    Hi,
I like to know if anyone has managed to integrate a FileMaker database in InDesign and if so how?
    thank you for your help

Which program are you copying and pasting from?
Pages and most other programs developed for use with Mac OSX use Unicode fonts. If the program you are using for your initial output does not, then that may be what is causing the problems (as the codes for generating each character may be different)
My suggestion is to save the file from the other program. Try to save or export it as an RTF file if you can. See if the file generated can be imported or opened in pages. If it can you should be able to copy and paste fine between the two open Pages files. (It's easier than it sounds when you familiarize yourself with Expose)

  • InDesign and Hindi

I am trying to type Hindi text into InDesign, and it is behaving differently than when I type the same text into TextEdit.
Using the Devanagari QWERTY keyboard, I type Alt-S, Shift-I. In TextEdit, I get the following (hopefully this will come through in the posting)
    श्री
Typing the same into InDesign, I get this:
    श््री
Futhermore, I cannot even paste the correctly interpreted characters from TextEdit into InDesign - the latter text always replaces the former text.
The problem seems to be compound characters.
How can I properly enter Hindi (Devanagari) text into InDesign?

Well, that wasn't too hard, but it was a touch more expensive than I'd hoped.
I've installed the trial version of IndicPLus, and it only took me a few minutes to figure out how to use it (the manual is vague from a newcomers perspective..you have to create a new paragraph style whilst the IndicPlus paragraph editor is set).
However, the Devanagari font I've been using that looks great in Pages looks a complete dogs dinner in IndicPlus/InDesign. Diacriticals are scatter-gunned over the line, and some letter combinations are rendered completely different from Pages (and completely wrong).
Noting that one of the samples shown on the IndicPlus website uses Arial Unicode, I took a chance on buying that font (another $100), and fortunately, it now works a charm!
Less fortunately, Arial Unicode doesn't seem to be available in Bold or Semibold, which would have been nice, but I can live without it.
    Edit:
Also, interestingly, Arial Unicode MS does't show up in the list of available fonts in IDesign, which was worrying for a moment. However, if I start typing the name in the font name box, it shows up as an auto-complete option! This is after restarting InDesign (but not my Mac).
