InDesign black actually 91%K

Hi all,
I've seen this discussed in many forums, but I have yet to come across a satisfying solution, so I thought I'd try to find an answer.
The problem seems simple:
For the sake of discussion let's imagine a single page in inDesign with one word or graphic shape in the middle, set in black, using the default indesign 'black' swatch. This is a greyscale document, and will be sent to an off-set press for printing with no colour signatures. Just a black plate.
I export this page as a PDF and view it on screen: the text doesn't show black, but more of a grey. I thought no problem, it's just showing me an approximation or a proof black that shows how it will be on paper (if it is set in RGB, it comes out nice and black).
So to test, I open the PDF in photoshop to check the levels. Lo and behold, the black is not 100%, but 91%K.
Why is the black not black? And should I worry about this? (Images with a 100 seem to come out black just fine).
Anyone any thoughts?
Thanks in advance.
eu.

In my opinion it's more important to render a solid black and keep the relationships between the shadows and the midtones than it is to preserve absolute percentage values.
But that doesn't happen if you export from SWOP to 20% Dot Gain and the appearance of black set to rich. You do preserve 100% black, but you don't preserve all the other relative values—the shadows get lighter and the highlights get darker than the original.
Look at these PDFs and you'll see the problem—the swatch labels are the starting CMYK black values.
This is a Photoshop5 to 20% dot gain conversion:
http://www.zenodesign.com/forum/PS5-20.pdf
Here's SWOP to 20% with rich black turned on:
http://www.zenodesign.com/forum/SWOP-20-RichBlack.pdf
Here's a capture from Acrobat. The SWOP conversion is on the right—the image tonal range is flattened and the blend bands in th shadow end

  • Photoshop black in InDesign is not the same as InDesign black

Is there a solution to intensify the blacks in InDesign?  If you create a black shape in Photoshop, and paste it into an
InDesign document, then create the same shape in InDesign and fill it with black and print, the Photoshop black is
really black and the InDesign black is dull.  What would be a solution.  I have tried the preferences and the display as
accurate black and rich black and it does not change.
    Anyone know the answer?

First, you should be using File > Place to import Photoshop images into InDesign, not Copy/Paste. Never Copy/Paste. When? Never. Any exceptions? No.
Next you need to be specific about “Black.” InDesign’s default Black swatch is 100% process black with no other process inks. But Black in Photoshop can be any of, oh, thousands of different values. Is the image RGB or CMYK? What is the RGB or CMYK breakdown of the black? Have you tried creating a swatch with the same values in InDesign? If this is a photograph with a very dark or black background and you certain that this “Black” is consistent throughout the image?
Since your new here, I'll let you in on another secret: ALWAYS tell us the version number of the program(s) you are using and your OS. It likely makes little difference in this case, but it is often necessary to answer many questions. Not giving us that information up front causes us to either ask you, delaying your answer, or not ask you because we just can’t be bothered asking that question for the two hundredth time.

I called Apple and spoke with a customer service representative regarding this issue. I was given the two things to try, and if they don't work, I was told I can call back in:
    1. Go to iCloud.com and look at the advanced options. Since Photos can be deleted here, the representative thought there may be an option to remove songs here as well.
    2. Go into the library that has the songs that were deleted and click Update iTunes match.
I tried #1--this didn't resolve the issue, as there is no option to remove songs this way. I can't try #2 right now since I'm at work, but if anybody else with this issue can try that step it can help us get the ball rolling on it. After I try that, I'll call Apple back to discuss this further.

  • Printing from InDesign - black lines

    Good afternoon all,
I've started using InDesign CS6 at work to produce advertising catalogues. I've hit a bit of a wall when I print it and would like a bit of help to try and solve my issue(s).
I have a booklet set up to print 4 pages of A4 on to double-sided A3. I printed my latest proof from InDesign this morning (just to A4)and it looked OK. I then tested it using the glossy paper we have just got today and this is when I noticed some thin black lines on the A3 print.
To help give an idea of what I'm working with, it is a catalogue/brochure with 6 or 7 product images per page, each with a price point graphic (a circle with the price in a text frame within). The price point overlaps the product image by varying degrees.
I've just checked again and the thin black lines are all on the left-hand edge of objects - both product images and price point images. I acquired the images from the DLibrary and the price point graphics came from a previous designer.
The black lines do not appear on every product image, neither do they appear on every price point. They are not all the same size (height) as the frame that they are on, if that makes sense. For instance, I have an image of a pack of coffee, and the black line starts at the top of the left-hand side and finishes about halfway down. The price point for the coffee has a black line all the way down the left-hand edge.
I have printed the catalogue to A4, it was 100% fine. I print to A3 and these lines appear. I know I could export to pdf and print from there, but that then leaves the centre spread with a white stripe down the middle and I don't have the tools or the knowledge to get rid of the borders that appear in Adobe Reader.
I've looked in the settings and can't find anything that looks like it will help. Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks for the tip Mikey - however the same thing happens with the thin black lines when I print on 'normal' A3 paper too. On normal A4 paper it's fine, no lines, but when I print to A3 I get the lines - on both kinds of paper.
I've attached a couple of (awful-looking) scans to help illustrate my point.

  • InDesign black ink is printing grey not black on Canon MP470 printer

Just installed a new IMac computer. I have two printers available. Canon MP470 connected via USB port and a HP Photosmart 6510 connected via WI-FI. When printing InDesign documents on the Canon printer all colors print a weak color (black is grey etc.). The same document printed on the HP Photosmart 6510 black prints as black and other colors appear normal as designed. Illustrator documents printed in black on both machines print black. Have I messed up a setting?

I have had the following Preferences set:
On Screen: Display all Blacks as Rich Black
Printing/Exporting: Output all Blacks as Rich Black
and have also checked to activate:
    Overprint [Black] Swatch at 100%

  • Indesign make logo black for overprint etc.

    Hi Guys
When using UV-varnish for a card or design, the file often needs a page with the desired UV-varnish elements in black.
Is there a way to make objects like .AI-logo's placed in InDesign black, but in InDesign and without having to duplicate the original logo .AI-file and making it black?
    thanks
    Bob

You can use Ink Manager to alias spot colors to Black, or some other spot (or any other individual CMY primaries), but it's global, so it's going to affect more than the logo if you used the same spots elsewhere. I'd personally set up a spot swatch for varnish and use that so it's on a separate plate, then use the Attributes panel to set the overprint parameters on the logo.

  • InDesign CC 2014 freezes on "What's New" window

    Dear All,
InDesign CC 2014 is freezing up everything when it hangs on the "What's New" window which is completely a blank white.  I can't close the application or force quit or do anything else…I have to shut down the computer in order to quit the application or do anything else on the computer -- it is completely frozen.  When the computer restarts, InDesign CC 2014 automatically tries to start up again and freezes the computer unless I get to it before it launches and force quit before it gets a chance to freeze again.
InDesign CC is working normally, but I notice that when CC 2014 launches, it also launches InDesign CC with it and both seem to run at the same time.  This does not happen when I start from InDesign CC -- only that application is then active.
"I'm also getting an Adobe warning that has begun to appear stating:  "Administrator rights are required to complete Adobe add-ons installation or removal" and I'm not sure which application this is referring to or how to log in for these "rights",
Anyone else having these issues?  I'm working on a Mac pro.
    Small Town Gal

Sorry for not being clear. I did the fix in CC2014 and worked great.

    Dear Alberto,
I'm not sure what vernon you're now running?  Did the above fix work on the new InDesign 2014? or are you saying that InDesign CC is now working?  The suggested "fix" says to open the InDesign CC folder, so I'm wondering if deleting the "What's New" folder from InDesign CC actually also removes it from InDesign 2014?  and is a temporary fix for InDesign 2014, allowing it to finally launch?  Thanks.

  • How to convert a PDF's Process Black to spot color

We have been asked to build InDesign templates for a two-PMS-color math book. The design calls for two PMS colors: a dark blue for most text and red highlights.
Because our Math plug-in doesn't work easily with PMS colors (it defaults to Process black), we hope to create all the “blue” text in Process Black. The press PDFs will have two inks: Process Black and PMS red. On press they will print the black plate in our blue PMS color.
This plan works on press, but for non-press use, we also want the PDFs to visually match the blue and red printed book. Ideally we would convert the Black Process ink to a blue spot but I'm not sure if this can be done.
Question 1: Does anyone know of a way to convert Process Black in a PDF to a spot color? Pitstop can convert spot to process, but we want the reverse.
Question 2 (which I may also post in the InDesign forum) Do you know of a way to redefine (or alias?) the indesign black swatch so that it functions as a spot color?

1 - yes, you can do this with Preflight in Acrobat Pro, but it's not on the default set of fixups.
Open Preflight, select "Single fixups" - the wrench icon
Options > Create New Preflight Fixup
Give it a name (e.g. "process black to spot")
Choose the Color category in the upper right
Choose 'Convert to spot color' in the upper left
Define the source parameters in the main panel (in your case, CMYK%, 0-0-0-100 with tolerance 0)
Define the spot color to change this color into, and the alternative space for rendering (i.e. your blue color)
If you wish, add a check to limit the conversion to certain things (e.g. text, vectors, etc.)
Click OK to save the fixup, then click FIX to apply it. To verify the result, use the Output Preview dialog in Acrobat.

  • Cannot open InDesign files on Mac that were saved on PC

I subscribe to Create Suite and have it installed on both my Mac and PC. So, they should both be the most current version, right? All updates are current.
A few (not all) InDesign files that were created/saved on a PC will not open up on my Mac. I get this message:
Cannot open [file name] because it was saved with a newer version of Adobe InDesign CC (10.0).
You must use that version or later to open the file. To then enable it to be opened in these version, choose Save As InDesign CS4 or later, or export to IDML.
"Save As InDesign CS4" actually has IDML in parenthesis, so it's all one option. When I bring the file over to my mac, it doesn't open properly (for example all the images are gone).
Could it be possible that there is a newer version of InDesign only for my PC and my Mac can't open those files? Seems ridiculous.

You would have no problem opening a file in version 10.0 if it was saved in 10.1, just as you would have no problem opening any other version dot release file in ay dot release of that version.
The problem here is the PC was updated to CC2014 and the Mac was not.
The OP also mentioned missing pictures when using IDML. IDML removes the previews, but you would need the linked images in any case for output, regardless of whether  you use .indd or IDML to move the file.

  • InDesign CS3 Unexpectedly quits

Installed InDesign CS3 (actually all of Creative Suite 3 Standard) on a brand new MacPro Intel G5 running Leopard about 5 weeks ago (2 GB ram). (Ran all updates that were available at the time.) All CS3 products were working fine until InDesign started crashing when starting up with the "unexpectedly quit" message. (Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat portions still fine.) In Design had only been started 5-6 times since the initial install was completed.
Have since run OS 10.5.4 update and InDesign 5.0.3 update (and permissions repair, of course). Still will not start. Have dumped InDesign preferences and all Adobefnt.lst files. Have tried starting in safe mode and root user. Still crashes. (Three other older computers with same software - 2 Intel G5s and 1 G4 - are all fine, so it's not like I don't know what I'm doing at all!)
I'm thinking I may have to dump InDesign and reinstall it with all of its updates. I'd really rather figure out what caused the problem and fix that, so I don't have to deal with this yet again.
Upon InDesign startup, it seems to get past the "startup services" portion and crashes on something that has "..SING.." in it. This goes so fast, though (on every computer), that I cannot pick up on the complete phrase.
Anyone know what this "SING" thing is, and what could make it corrupt?
    Thanks.
    Ginny

Addendum to my original post . . . I found something about "SING" in the knowledgebase where it indicated permissions might need to be expanded on that file to include the user being able to read and right. I've done this but to no avail.
What loads immediately after this "SING" thing? I've tried to read this on other computers, but it's just too fast. That could be where InDesign on this computer is crashing, but I don't know what to look for, since I cannot read it at all.
    Thanks again.

  • Indesign CS4 in Mac 10.6.8, sometimes won't show files, sometimes won't show tools

Indesign CS4 in Mac 10.6.8, sometimes won't show files, sometimes won't show tools. Like I click to open a file from the finder, and Indesign makes that temporary file in the finder, but won't display the pages. At other times I can have the pages displayed but I can't open the tools such as the colour swatches or the paragraphy styles. This all happens at random, although I suspect it is more likely to happen if I have been working in some other program such as Typestyler or Aperture, and come back to Indesign. Kind of like Indesign gets snooty at me working in another program.
I've done the thing of dicing the preferences, but so far the only workaround that has worked so far is quitting and restarting the program. I don't remember this happening so much until recently, in other words the problem seems to be getting more frequent.
But I am wondering if this has happened with anyone else and if there are any other suggestions for avoiding it.
Back in the good old days you would reinstall PageMaker and that would settle things for a while. But now I don't know if a program like Indesign CS4 actually gets corrupted and if it does I don't know what to do. Does the program get corrupted? And should you reinstall a fresh copy? If it's a good idea to reinstall the program how do you do that? Is it possible to download a fresh copy? And if I do, what happens when the fresh copy phones home? I've tangled with the Adobe Microsoft corporation before when Indesign phoned home and got a crossed line.

    Other things to try:
Examine your specific version of Optima by going to Type menu > Find Font, clicking on the Optima font and choosing More Info (I think) and find the specific version number. See if you can uninstall the font and reinstall another Optima font with a different, preferably newer version number. There has (historically) been a bad version of Optima floating around for years. Maybe you have it.
Use a free utility like FontNuke or FontFinagler to get your Mac OS to reset its font plists. Sometimes that makes the OS feel better.
Use the built-in Disk Utility to repair file permissions. You never know.
Export your old document out to IDML and reopen that resulting idml file back into a new freshly written INDD file. This might remove internal database corruptions.
All these are chicken-soup things to try and they might be good for you.

  • Many of the fonts on my PC are not available in InDesign CS5.5?

    Hi
I am using a font called Narkisim in FW but it is not available in my InDesign CS5.5. I have checked the 'font' folder for InDesign and actually its empty, though the preset standard fonts are all there.
Really not sure whats going on here, please help? I really need to use Narkisim for this print job that I'm doing.
    I appreciate the help.
    Ash

    FW = FireWorks, I imagine.....
Is the font installed in one of the system font locations on a Mac or the System fonts folder on PC? If not it must be installed there, or in the Adobe common fonts folder, or ID's own private fonts folder to be seen by ID. If it is installed in a palce ID can see it, make sure you scroll through the whole font list. Some fonts are classified in odd ways and may be out of order alphabetically or included in one of the non-roman groups near the bottom of the list (In fact, Narkism seems to be a Hebrew font, so it should be listed near the bottom with other Hebrew fonts).
If you still can't find it, that may indicate that the font doesn't come up to the standards ID needs (it seems to be about 20 years old). ID is far more sensitive to imporper or bad font formatting than other applications.

  • Burmese/Myanmar font problem in InDesign

    CS6, World-Ready Paragraph Composer, Mac OS X v10.8
Does anyone know a Unicode 5.1/6.x font for the Myanmar plane which works in InDesign?
Tried Yangon, Myanmar3 (mm3), Padauk, Parabaik and Apple’s built-in Myanmar (Sangam) MN.
Copy-and-paste from Apple TextEdit works for half of my text with the font Yangon. On the other half, some combined characters are either not combined and/or in the wrong order. For one combined character, I tried all permutations with the Apple’s standard Apple Myanmar keyboard; did not work either. Some fonts are worse, some fonts are better. For example with Myanmar3 only very few characters are combined correctly. In Apple TextEdit and Microsoft Word 2011, Myanmar3 is perfect. In InDesign, တန်း is rendered correctly only by Yangon. Therefore, I assume a font issue.

    Can you post a sample?
    တန်း
Even if you do not see the line above, you should be able to copy-and-paste it to a Burmese savvy app, are you? Otherwise, I upload a picture.
Did you key the text yourself?
Not everything. I concentrated on the combined characters above, typed them myself, and even looked up (double-checked) the Unicode byte-code/order in a hex editor. Because there is only one order allowed in Apple TextEdit—which matches my understanding of the Unicode standard—I doubt I have a byte issue. Anyway, difficult to judge. As character encoding, do you know if you use Zwagyi-One, Unicode 5.1, or WinInnwa? Perhaps I advanced to much, going for Unicode 5.1 compatible font.
    "a font issue"
As stated, was just a guess. I am not about a bug in InDesign. Actually, looks like InDesign is OK because one font works partly. Did I get you correctly, your current best guess: It is an issue of those fonts? That would strengthen my guess, then I would go that path and look more into fonts …
