Indesign book files making a PDF with spreads????

Hi, I am working with a book file but need to make a digital PDF with spreads. So the problem is obviously that I start with a right single page and finish with a left single page in each chapter which doesn't make a spread. Is there a way around this? (apart from copy and pasting the single pages at each beginning and ending together as spreads into an empty document and replacing these pages in the PDF)

When you make the pdf of the book from the book panel.
Create a new document call it filenamespreads or something.
Get the PDFplacer.jsx script http://indesignsecrets.com/placing-all-the-pages-of-a-pdf-inside-indesign.php
Run a few pages to get the position right, then do the whole book.
Export to pdf as spreads.
It sounds longwinded but it isn't.

This is the closest answer to solving my problem.
To clarify, the reason I need spreads is NOT for final printing. Its for sending a reader proof to a client to send to someone for review. They need to see it as spreads to get a "feel" for the book. I feel like it should be possible to do this, easily, without too much stress in InDesign.
I am going to try your solution but I am a newbie about using scripts in InDesign. Never done it before. I placed the script in the scripts folder and re-launched InDesign, but how do I launch the script?

    welcome to the Pages Discussions. If I remember correct, in Pages 1.x there is no way to export text links to PDF. An outline view creation doesn't exist.
    If you want to have links in PDF (of the TOC, too), then you should upgrade to iWork'06. But outline view doesn't exist here like it doesn't in version 1.x.

    I just tried adding the files as attachments; however I didn't like doing that because it increased the file size of my PDF document quite a bit. 
    I'm not sure if you're familiar with the "Insert Object" command in MS Word, but I want to do the same thing in my PDF document...but the key is, anyone must to be able to open the embedded file from any location.
    I created an MS Word document with several embedded objects.  I was later asked to PDF the Word document, but since embedded MS Word objects do not migrate to the PDF, I am now trying to embed the same files I embedded into my Word document into my PDF document over top of the icon image.  The file types I'm trying to embed include MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe PDF.  Does this make more sense?  I want to create a hyperlink over top the icon image that was PDF'd from the MS Word document which allows any user to click on the link and open the separate file.

  • Making a PDF with LiveCycle then being able to edit pages, insert pages, delete pages, attach files to document, be readable in Adobe Reader etc.

    We have been working for some time with LiveCycle to creat a documents and have experienced a host of problems with the end product.
    1.  Images inserted into the LiveCycle PDF document often come up as "broken links" after editing the document and resaving it.
    2.  Documents will not display in Acrobat reader unless a digital signature is applied to them and the document is re-saved.
    3.  After making the document, we are unable to use Adobe Pro to insert pages, delete pages, or insert files into the document as attachments.
    The end state was to use the simplicity of LiveCycle to create a document and do most of the hard work, and then save it as a PDF document that could be easily edited with Adobe Pro.  It has proven difficult, to say the least, to figure out how to make this work.

    2- It only seems rational that if I make a form with LiveCycle that I should be able to view it with Adobe Reader or Adobe Pro.
    Making a form with LiveCycle to be distrubuted to personnel internally that have Adobe Reader and Adobe Pro and cannot open it without it having a digital signature field in it that has just recently been signed just doesn't make sense.  Nor does it seem to make sense to have to purchase 200 additional licenses just for LiveCycle so that people can open a PDF that was made with LiveCycle.  If I make it in LiveCycle and only people with LiveCycle can open it, what is the purpose of making it to begin with?
    3- This also totally sucks.  In a standard Adobe Doc I can at least attach documents to it?
    So, what, exactly then, is the purpose of LiveCycle if the only benefit it seems to provide is ease of creation, but the end product has way less functionality?
    And how do I go about contacting an Adobe rep on the phone in regards to this without getting "there is no support for this product, go to Adobe.com"
    We have millions of dollars of Adobe software and can't get support other than hunting and pecking in these forums?  Really?

  • Exporting Indesign book to single page PDFs

    Hi,
    I'm after a script that will enable me to select an entire Indesign book and export it as separate individual PDFs in one go.
    I know there are a few scripts that either export the book into chapters or export the .indd files to separate single PDFs, but nothing that will do everything in one action. (i.e. take the book and output all the individual pages as single PDFs)
    Has anyone written a script like this or is it easy to tweak an existing script?
    BTW I have no scripting knowlege whatsoever.

    I fear your response doesn't make a lot of sense. The easiest way is to put your files into a book, which will not harm them. The easiest script is often no script at all.
    I don't understand your comment about separate text boxes, files contain text boxes and definitionally multiple files means multiple separate text boxes.
    I do not know what you are referring to with respect to the toc update, perhaps you could reference a particular command or script, or provide a screenshot.
    It sounds like now you are interested in updating multiple tables of contents in a single fell swoop -- this would appear to have nothing to do with the original question. If that's the case, please start a new thread.

  • Making a PDF with an image that has both spot colour channel and alpha channel

    Hi I have a logo that was supplied to us as a PSD it has a transparent background, it also has a pantone colour channel. I have made a alpha channel from the transparent background as well.
    The graphic looks fine in InDesign (alpha channel selected in the import options), ie the background is transparent.
    But when we try to make a Hi Res PDF the result is that the graphic is on a solid white background.
    If I go back to the PSD and merge the spot channel with so that it is just CMYK and try again the PDF is fine, but we obviously loose the spot colour.
    How do you make a PDF with a transparent PSD that has a spot colour?

    You know that annoying response from support staff? "We cannot replicate your issue". Well....
    I created a PSD in CS5, with a bunch of process stuff, then loaded a spot color channel and painted in some pawprints using Pantone 172C:
    Saved this as a PSD file, default settings (maximize compatibility on, but it doesn't make any difference in this situation).
    Created a new InDesign document in CS5, added a gradient and some text, then placed the PSD.  ID understands the PSD has an inbuilt background so there's no need to bother with a dedicated alpha mask:
    Exported from ID using the High Quality Print option (PDF/1.4, which keeps the live transparency):
    Re-exported to PDF/X-1a (based on PDF/1.3 which flattens transparency) - looks exactly the same. In all cases the spot channel is intact and the see-through regions of the PSD are maintained.

  • Downloading InDesign book files from Creative Cloud files

    Gang,
    I'm working on a project that has me using the Creative Cloud files to store the changes I make. I know I'm not using all of the features, but with my own personal account on two machines and my employers site license on the other, I end up using the browser version of Creative Cloud to upload and download files on my work computer.
    When I download a book file (.indb), Creative Cloud and my browser seem to get confused as to what kind of file it is. Creative Cloud asks me and doesn't have an option for InDesign Book. When it downloads, it downloads as a .octet-stream file. I later go to Finder and change the extension to indb and life is good.
    Is this a bug or a feature?

  • Way to save MS Word file as a PDF with original MS Word file date?

    For archiving purposes, I'm betting PDFs will be readable (backwards compatible) long after my current file saved in Microsoft Word becomes out of date. Anyone know of a way I can save my Word file as a PDF while retaining the original Word file last-modified date (for patent protection reasons to prove date of authorship)? (or Word to text file or ASCII file would also be equivalent as long as original date is kept)

    I doubt that a computer date would suffice for legal proof of date. It is easily changed for those that know their way around the computer. I would have to play a bit, but could probably do it without too much trouble. About the only way to satisfy the need for a patent is to properly insert the pages in a patent notebook and get the information notorized. From what I have seen, the legal profession generally requires hard copy, not a computer file. A loose-leaf form is also typically not acceptable, but a bound notebook properly annotated. The notorized aspect is a way around some of this I think. In any case, it sounds like you need to consult a patent attorney.

  • Indesign crashes when exporting to pdf with .eps and .ai files placed

    Hi everyone,
    I have an Indesign file with 4 placed Illustrator .eps file placed. Whenever I try to export to pdf, it starts to export and then when it reaches a page with a .eps file on it, it hovers for a minute and then Indesign crashes. I decided to save these 4 .eps files as .ai files and replace them. Now when I export to pdf, it gets through the export and a pdf file is created but immediately after, Indesign crashes.
    Is this a sign of corrupt .eps or .ai files or a corrupt Indesign file? All I know is that if I remove all the image files, then the ID file is fine, ie. it exports and ID doesn't crash.
    Is there a way to test either .eps, .ai or Indesign files for corruption, and if they are corrupt is it possible to repair them?
    Appreciate any help offered.

    You haven't said which version of Indesign you are using or other specs, but I would bet that you are using CS2 on an Intel Mac. CS2 runs under Rosetta on an Intel Mac, and I have found that memory problems are often the result of crashes like the ones you have described. My advice is to stay away from EPS files and use AI or PSD, especially if the file is a bitmap or photo. This has eliminated all the crashes that used to occur on my system. As far as the crashes after making PDF files, I don't have a solution other than restarting Indesign after exporting a PDF file or two at a time. The same Rosetta memory problem seems to mess it up for me. Mine would just exit from Indesign with no warning. Hope this helps.

    Looking for a book designer to help with setting up a file in InDesign CC so I can place text from Word.
    I'm helping to produce a large book (700+ B5 pages) about history of Chinese medicine in 20th century.  There are lots of characters used throughout (within English-language paragraphs) so it's really important that the designer has experience working with fonts for both traditional and simplified characters.
    The book has been laid out in Word with style sheets to basic mockup stage and can be provided for reference so there's no design concept needed, simply getting the shell ready to place the Word files, but this would probably include things like:
    Document setup, page size, margins etc
    Verifying the style sheets are set up properly & add extras if needed eg optical margins etc, that aren't included in Word
    Structuring files as chapters, front matter, back matter, headers & footers etc
    Suggesting a layout grid based on word file
    Maybe a final check of the finished file before producing the PDF
    This is a self-published project for a very small market!!!  So of course we're looking to economise :-)  So if you're interested then please provide a quote based on your experience of what's needed to set up a project properly but not with too many bells & whistles!!

  • Can i make a pdf with spreads out of several indesigndocuments?

    I have got this question:
    Imaging this case: I have 3 indesigndocuments, that should be in one pdf-document. So i make a booklet of the 3 indesigndocuments and then i can make a pdf of them. But I want the pages in the pdf shown spreadwise. (so option spread is checked).  BUT: the pages in the indesigndocuments are not like that. F.i. id-doc1 has page 1 and 2, id-doc2 has 3 tot 6 and id-doc3 has the rest of the pages. (this is just an example to explain…) So page 2 and 3 should be on  a spread etc…
    But instead of this I get a pdf like:

    2
    3
    4 - 5
    6
    7
    8 - 9
    10 - 11
    etc
    Can that be solved, still using the same indesign-documents?

  • Extracting Embedded Files From a PDF with Adobe.APS

    I'm not sure if this needs to be here in security or if it needs to be in another forum, so if an admin feels it needs to move to a different forum, feel free to.
    The situation I am in is that I get about 100-150 pdf's a day that I need to extract an embeeded file from.  Right now this is a completely manual process and is very time consuming.  What I have been trying to do is automate the process of extraction.
    The issue I am running into is that the files are encrypted with Adobe.APS, and so my java code won't handle the security, and I can't find any other software that handles Adobe.APS.
    I was wondering if Adobe had a product that could do this, or if there was an API that could handle this.  I can perform the extraction on a platform of any flavor (Windows, Mac, Linux, etc...).
    Any help in this regard would be greatly appreciatted.  Thanks.

    In my case I have a drop-down list of files with preloaded filenames to attach. Here is the code that works for me on a click of button.

    After you click the button it open a windows dialog box asking you to choose the file and adds the attachment to the attachment pane in runtime. To view the attachments simply view the attachment pane in runtime after you add the attachments.
