InDesign brochure into Captivate 8 - workflow?

We have a multi-page brochure (InDesign) we want to turn into a tutorial in Captivate 8. I can find no documentation for getting these products to work together.
Ideally we want as little work as possible - i.e.to drop in the document and have each page of the brochure become a separate slide.
1. Is this do-able?
2. Is this do-able without turning each page of the brochure into an image? (We want to manipulate for reactive screens.)
3. Is this do-able without creating a SWF file from InDesign? (We want to publish in HTML5).
Any help, suggestions, comments thoughts? I've seen this asked before, but for Captivate 5 or lower. Has anyone come up with a solution yet? Thanks for your help with this!

Sounds like a re-think might be needed. If you are working with InDesign files they are probably mostly oriented around TEXT. You could take the ideas incorporated in the text and design and develop interactive learning courses in Captivate. But there isn't really any benefit in just taking the InDesign files and then dropping them into Captivate, because that doesn't really make them any better, so save yourself the trouble of trying to figure out how to do that.
To create something interactive, you could stay in InDesign and add interactivity there--but it won't necessarily allow you to accumulate user's scores and such. There is a good program in this on Lynda.com.
Or, you could, as I said, start from the content in the InDesign documents and create a scorable course in Captivate.
Either way, the solution won't be instant, and there will be a learning curve involved. Best not to rush when you also have to learn. Clarify your long term goals for the project, see if there's an ugly short term solution (i.e., just putting up pdfs of the InDesign files on the LMS), and then get to work on the "beautiful" solution in the time you've bought.

Have you tried importing it with standard workflow instead of coyping and pasting.
Is the resolution of your powerpoint presentation and Captivate Project same, make sure it is same, else, it would rescale it to fit on the sldie, rescaling might detoriate the quality.

  • InDesign files to Captivate 8 for LMS????

Our training manuals are currently published in InDesign. We are implementing an LMS and using Captivate as the authoring tool. What is the best way to get these files into Captivate? Should I copy/paste into PPT and then convert to InDesign????? Anyone have any ideas?

  • How to import questions into Captivate 4 from a delimited file

    I'm looking
a way to import questions from a delimited text file (or excel spreadsheet)
    into captivate.
All the questions are simple multiple choice, single answer, four selections per question.
I have hundreds - I'd hate to have to retype them all in one at a time.
    Thanks in advance

Does anyone know if this is a feature in Captivate 5.
Other things I would really like to see in Captivate 5.
Importing and Exporting the graded quiz/test content out of captivate into another
application/ form.  Such as xml, tab delimited, excel spreadsheet,
Adobe pdf, Word document or another format.  Our current content
developement systems allows us to (when publishing) do this.
1> exclude questions from the Published content
(exclude section questions, or final test content)
2> produce different test versions from question banks
3> Produce a PDF paper test for when we want to train in a classroom setting
4> Select which questions we want to produce
5> Import questions from a pre-defined format.  To note: when we do this the system also makes us define a unique interaction id so that the import will update existing questions.
I know this will NOT work for some of the more sophisticated questions, But for the simple Mulitple choice, true/false, fill in the blank.  etc..
THIS WOULD BE A GREAT FEATURE..
It would also be NICE TO HAVE THE abiliy to PROFILE versions of the SAME Course WITH OUT REPRODUCING / DUPLICATING / REPEATING THE  ENTIRE COURSE PRESENTATION.
    Such as
    "INSTRUCTOR TAUGHT TRAINING"
    "WEB TRAINING"
    "PAPER TEST A"
    "PAPER TEST B"
    ETC...
LASTLY: if we can not export the QUIZ content.  Can an excel spreadsheet LIKE INTERFACE be used to edit certain aspects of the questions.
Such as the InteractionId which is sent to the LMS ('cmi.interactions.0.id').  My developer team says it is real difficult and time consuming
to track down interactionIds and then maintain them in a perfect way.

  • Joining multiple inDesign files into one, can you solve this?

OK so basically I work at a magazine, the creative's all work on separate spreads so all the inDesign files consist of between 1 and 10 pages then usually they are all spat out in there sets of PDF's and sent to the printers.
Now I want to do an online addition of the magazine with the new SWF export feature in inDesign CS4 but I'm wondering how can you easily compile all of the separate inDesign files into one so that it can spit out one single swf with all 200 pages with the page peel effect?
Is there even a way without a mass of work of manually adding all the pages into one file, that would be absolutely humongous? Anyone with any suggestions how to make this process the simplist and with the least amount of labout would be an absoulute legend, I have little time to spend on this which sucks so looking for the best and fastest possible way that we could do it each month.

I migth have a kind of solution for you. I have made a solution named eDocBrowser. (I called it Magazine Browser in earlier threads here and couple of other forums). It´s a collection of files that you publish with you SWF-files you have exported from InDesign. With eDocBrowser, you can put several SWF-files together and end-user can use them almost as one single SWF. Heres little demo I made just few minutes ago.
    http://www.prepress.fi/eDocBrowser/
There are 3 SWF-files, all of them exported from InDesign. They are originally separate indd-files. When you reach last page of Document1, small arrow appears, and text "Jump to next file" and name of the next file too. You can go there also by using next-button at the bottom right corner, one that you use normaly to go next page. Same kind of arrow appears also when you are in first page of document 2 or 3 etc... with it you can go back to earlier documents last page etc... All the documents can be seen also in a drop-down menu at top of the screen. Labels of that menu are customizable.
Theres also a zoom. When you clic zoom+ button, your cursor changes to magnifying glass. With zoom- you can go back to normal view.
Additional features are FullScreen-view, Printing current spread and customizing user interface, buttons and logo at the top-left corner. Text search is very exprerimental and requires indd-file indexing with script we have made too. It indexes every single word in indd-document to XML-file and put pagenumbers there too. eDocBrowser searches that XML-file and gives all the hits to small result window. Hits are also links to page where they point...Search is not in use with this demo..
There is a small help-section in top-right corner...
We also have a script called eDocMaker. It does everything for you. You just have to have indd-files in one folder. Script asks location of that folder when you run it. It also askes you which resolution you want to use with images, anything goes between 72-2400 (72ppi is indesign´s default resolution for SWF-export, using bigger resolution might cause bigger SWF-files, but images look better when zoomed)
Price of the single licence of eDocBrowser will be 80euros (aprx. 100dollars). With it you may install one copy of eDocBrowser into your server and use as many SWF-files there as you want. There is no search feature in single version.
Price of unlimited licence is 300euros (aprx.400dollars) With it you may install as many copies of eDocBrowser as you like. With it you also get all the indesign scripts including eDocMaker with resolution booster, search indexer etc. + goodies like user interface and button templates, indesign effect (3D spine graphic etc)....
Product is about ready, we are just setting up a place to sell it. Now it seems that we are going to use a service called payloadz.com....

  • How Do I combine 2 InDesign Documents into 1 (in a very particular way)

How do I combine two InDesign Documents into one in a very specific way.
Here's my problem: I have two separate InDesign CS5 files for playing cards. File one is the front. File two is the back.
The company that does my final print production needs the the cards sent as two separate PDFs. One for the card fronts, one for the card backs. Both of these InDesign (and the PDF export) files are arranged in the same way: page 1 is card #1, page 2 is card #2, etc. Nice and simple.
However, I use a different company for producing prototype versions of the decks (the production printer can't do this economically). My prototype producer needs me to send a single PDF where page 1 is Card #1 Back, page 2 is Card #1 Front, Page 3 is Card #2 back, Page 4 is Card #2 front, etc.
The decks I am building usually run 56 cards, but can be as large as 180 cards.
So, what's the easiest way to automate this process? is there a way to combine two separate indesign files by "interleaving" the pages from the two original documents into a new larger document (where I could do a new PDF export)?  Or, is there a better way to do this in Acrobat Pro? At the moment I have to resort to drag and dropping each card from one PDF thumbnail pallet to the other. It's really time consuming and mind-numbingly boring.  Any Ideas?

This script is actually pretty straightforward, so it's a good first
    challenge I think.
I would script this in InDesign -- probably because I'm more familiar
    with InDesign scripting.
To start learning the InDesign scripting basics, open the ExtendScript
Toolkit (ESTK) which is almost certainly installed on your computer
already. Go to the Help menu, and you'll find an entry there called
Adobe Intro to Scripting. Read that. I think that's the best place to start.
For the script in question, you would want to:
    1. make sure both InDesign documents are open. They would both have the
same number of pages. (No scripting involved here, just make sure
they're open before running the script.)
    2. loop backwards through the collection of document pages of one of the
documents. (document.pages is the collection you're looking for)
    3. use the move() method of a document page to move it. (myPage.move())
    4. Learn about the LocationOptions enumerator so that when you move the
page you can tell InDesign if you want to move it before, or after
    another page. (LocationOptions.AFTER or LocationOptions.BEFORE)
    5. Get a reference to the page in the second document before (or after)
which you want to move the page in the first document.
    5. that's basically it
I suggest that as you work your way through this (if you decide to take
up the challenge), you post any questions you may have on the InDesign
    Scripting forum here.

  • Problem importing Adobe Connect recording into Captivate 6.0

    Hello,
Not having found something about this via search, I'm asking the question.  I am in tech support for University of Missouri-Extension and we use Connect and create many recordings for later share.  I am able to import these FLV recordings into Captivate 5.0, but not 6.0 which we've just purchased.  I get the message; "Video encountered an internal error."  Is this a known problem with a work-around, or something new?  Any assistance would be appreciated.  Thanks.
    Steve

    Hi Steve,
Do you have audio in these recordings? If yes, can you try and use Adobe Media Encoder to encode these to a different format and then try re-importing.
You should be able to import the file this way, however, you audio might not come across.
Sorry about, we have shared the problem ahead.
    Thanks,

  • I need to turn an indesign document into an editable pdf. how do I do that?

I need to turn an indesign document into an editable pdf, how do I do that?

InCopy is a solution, but it's not the only viable solution.
I update many books, from 200 pages to 3,200 pages every year, long document, very techincal tax books.
Some are done through InCopy, some are edited word files and rtfs exported from InDesign, some are marked up hard copies etc.
It totally depends on the clients technical ability with computers. Last year I taught over 30 authors of ours how to use InCopy. Some were receptive, some were dubious, some were totally clueless.
And on the dubious and totally clueless I spent more time troubleshooting their problems than I would normally with a Word/RTF option.
Some people are capable of switching to InCopy or even know how to use it in the first place. For anyone never used InDesign or InCopy before then it's a massive learning curve to jump from MS Word et al word processors, to InCopy.
I do agree, it is the best solution that's out there, technically. But that solution is not usable by a lot of people.
Yeh if the client is comfortable with InCopy then it's the way forward.
But in most cases, in my experience, it's faster and more efficient to Export the text as RTF and let the author update the RTF. That leaves you in control of reinserting the text and formatting it correctly. Rather than letting the client add bold, underline, italics, superscript, subscripts, crazy workarounds because they didn't know how to do it properly. And in the end you end up with 2 or 3 times the amount of work than is necessary, just cleaning up what the client has done in InCopy that does not suit the overall formatting of the publications.

  • Can I place page 2 of an InDesign doc into another InDesign doc? A Script maybe?

I would like to take certain pages from document A and place them in document B so that when I change doc A, the linked pages placed in doc B automatically update.
I often place single page InDesign documents into other InDesign documents but can't figure out if there is a way to place individual pages from multipage files.

Hell yeah! Exactly what I was looking for. That little tick was holding me up all afternoon.
I usually drag and drop files from Bridge and don't often actually use the Place function!

  • Is it possible to import a png sequence to be used as an animation into Captivate 7?

Knowing that png files come into Captivate quite well, I am wondering if it is possible to bring in a sequence of png files, that are an animation, without having to bring them in one at a time and lining them up on the timeline one after the other?
    Thanks,
    Dan

Thanks for your reply. However, I have tried going the route of animated gif files already with mixed results (more bad than good) and was hoping there was an easy way to drop in a sequence of png files, as I would imagine that they would all show.
But may I ask the settings (to save the files) you used for your animated gif files? The problem with mine was that the animations would not play (most of the time) when I would run the slides with the animations in IE and Safari. The animation looked fine in Captivate but as soon as I pushed them out to HTML5 animations would not play. I have been using Photoshop with the following settings in the image below:
Also, if you could let me know if you tested your course with any gif animations in IE or Safari and let me know your results, I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks!!!

  • When importing a flash animation into captivate flash will not call external files

Is there a way to import flash into captivate and it still be able to call external files (ie. sound, video xml)? When I import flash into captivate it will not call any external file.

    Hi all
Wow, I was so hoping fellow Adobe Community Expert Paul Dewhurst would pop in on this thread.
Why? Well, Paul sent me a way cool gizmo a while back that hacked the Info button. It used an external file for some of the information! So somehow Paul managed to sort what it took to insert a Flash object into Captivate and have that object extract data from an externally located file.

  • Importing Flash Animation AS3 into Captivate 3.0

I have some animations and interactions that were written in
Flash AS3, that work fine when published in a SWF file and run with
FlashPlayer 9, but they don't work at all when I import them into
Captivate 3.0. In Captivate, they seem to run when they apear in
the in the Insert -> Animation dialog box., but then once they
are placed in Captivate, they don't show up at all when I Preview
-> Project (F4). The dialog box says that the duration of the
animation is 00:00:00.1 (i.e., one tenth of a second!). What was on
the stage (from the Flash file) shows up, but none of the AS3 code
    works. Help!!

If you create an AS3 widget in Cp4, you'll notice that is starts you off using a template.  Most of the action takes place on the onEnterFrame event handler.  If you want something specific to occur at a certain time, you must place a condition for either the current slide, or the current frame.  Otherwise, the actions you describe above will occur... you animation AS3 code just executes immediately because Cp doesn't know when to execute it otherwise .  I'd suggest that you either use the widget framework, or place a condition in your code for executing on a specific frame or slide.  When I create widgets, I check for a specific frame:
    if (mainmov.rdinfoCurrentFrame  == currentFrameCheck) {
         //your code here
If you go this route, I'd look into another function called AddNoSkipFrame which ensures Cp4 will not skip over the frame you're trying to check.  You can read more about it here.  And there's a thread about it here.
    Good Luck,
    Jim Leichliter

  • How to import multiple files linked to swf into captivate?

    Hi all
I am trying to import a flash swf animation into captivate 5.5. I figured it should be straight forward by going Insert > Animation, but the animation doesn't do what it is meant to. I think this is because the swf file is associated with a number of images, audios and an xml file. I thought if I got all the files into the Captivate library it might work, but I've only been able to import the images and audio not the xml file (Import > XML tells me Captivate can't import xml). I'm not sure what to do to get the animation playing.
    Any responses appreciated.
    Thanks Peter

    Hi Peter,
Importing an animation that has certain required files like graphics and aurido and XMl scattered would not work if each broght sepeartely to library, what is assumed while you do Insert--Animation is that the animation has all the required components embedded in itself.
seo, you can check of the source file can be modified to produce a single flash file that has all required assets embedded in itself.
    Thanks,
    Anjaneai
