InDesign Causes Monitor to Flicker

Man...I hope I screwed up something and that it's me, and not my new monitor!
I launched InDesign today to play with the Story Editor. This was my first launch on the new Mac. I went into Preferences>>Display Performance, and set the Default View and Adjust View Settings to High Quality. My monitor began flickering.
Now, I have confess I thought I set it back to the default, but I launched it again so I could see the right terms for what I did as I wrote this description. The settings are still at High Quality, but, there's no flicker. I also thought I had noticed flicker after "restoring" the settings and exiting the program, but it was so slight, I wasn't sure if was the lighting conditions or just my eyes finally giving up (I'd been staring at the monitor for 10+ hours.
Oddly, the setting sun is on this monitor right now too, and it looks almost as if I'm typing on paper. That's pretty cool!
Has anyone else had an experience similar to mine? Maybe there was some sort of "burn-in" period for the monitor to adapt to the new settings?
I have a GeForce 8800 GT with 512 MB of VRAM, and a single XHD3000 monitor connected with a Dual-DVI running at 2560 x 1600 @ 60 Hz, 32-bit Color Depth.
I have a couple other posts, and I suspect part of it is just me getting used to a good system vs the really limited systems I've used till now.
Thank you for any suggestions or anecdotes or advice!
Best regards,
Keith

@Richard,
Honest. And, while I have two laptops to which I could hook up the monitor, neither of them could run this big boy at the resolution I was using (2560 x 1600), so I'm not sure it would be a fair test. If I had another machine with a graphics card cable to running this, it would be an excellent test. Also, as I said, it's now running in "High Quality" mode and there is no flicker, or...???...perhaps not much of one (at the moment, I feel like I see something out of the corner of my eye, but I just turned on the computer). This makes me think that it's not InDesign but the monitor--adjusting to new settings, warming up, something along those lines.
@richarde
I wasn't doing anything. I had open a blank document, but as soon as I closed the Preferences dialog box, the flickering began.
I think part of this is my paranoia about that 60 Hz refresh. I'm not used to having a flat panel, so I feel like the refresh rate should be more in the lines of 70 Hz or 92 Hz, or whatever the high end was for powerful graphics cards on CRTs.

  • USB to DVI devices cause dual and triple monitors to flicker

    Hello everyone!
I have two T500's which are on a Lenovo docking station, using 3 external monitors.   One monitor is using the port on the docking station, which is a digital port, thus using the ATI video card within the Thinkpad.  The other two monitors are using the Lenovo USB to DVI devices to have 3 external digital monitors total.    Recently, for no reason that I can see, after the laptop is docked and booted up, once all items on the taskbar load, the usb to dvi icon on the taskbar starts to "circle" and then all 3 monitors take turns flickering, redrawing icons, etc.  It will eventually stop on it's own, but it is frustrating to wait for it to finish.  I see no evidence of anything in the eventvwr.  I have updated the BIOS, the ATI drivers and used the latest usb to dvi drivers to no avail.  I have turned hardware acceleration off on the one monitor that is running from the docking station, but it does not affect it.  Turning off hardware acceleration on the usb to dvi causes them to not function at all.   Any light that you can shed on this will be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you,
    Lisa

Thanks for the help but I think I will stick with Xmonad and Xinerama as it work perfectly. I just will not be able to use a different window manager with composite, oh well I do not like extra bloat anyway. I already have 2 powerful video cards and there is no need to spend another $200 on an adapter.

  • External monitor causes FCP to flicker

I want to connect my MacBook Pro to an external monitor, mirroring the laptop, and run FCP 6 there.  When I do so, the displayed FCP windows flicker severely when played, as if the computer is remembering the first frame FCP was at when the monitor was connected, and the playback flickers between that frame and the current frame.  There is no flicker when Play is stopped, and the display does show the correct frame.  Re-starting Play, the playback again flickers between that same original frame and the current frame.
Whatever resolution I set the display to, I get the same result.  This has happened on two totally independent external setups - one using an Apple external monitor, the other an independent projector.
    What should I be doing?

Not in this case, I just tried to mirror my displays on my Mac Pro and it did exactly the same thing as yours and I had to quit FCP to get it back to normal, strange, but why do you want to mirror your displays when you have the better option to edit with two screens?.

  • My 5.1 T5900 speakers is causing my monitor to flicker

I bought this speaker of mines a few days ago. Installed it around the perimeter of my computer and it worked fine. Then i shifted my computer just by a bit and that's when the problem started. My monitor started flickering like crazy. I thought "degauss" would help but it didnt. Any helpful hints.

No, the reduction would be negligible -- unless you have an unusually large impedance mismatch between the two devices. Of more concern is the distance of the cable to your living room speakers. Still not a problem if they're powered because then it's likely volume control can compensate for the small signal drop. If not, then you'll need an amplifier anyway.

  • External Monitor screen flicker fixed

I had a problem with my 3rd party external mornitor that kept flickering. It happened all of a sudden and was a constant flicker that was really annoying. Anyways, I discovered that when the mini-dvi connector is near my speakers(which are unshielded of course) It causes the screen to flicker. All I needed to do was move my mini-dvi connector away from the speakers(at least a foot away) and had no more issues. It was awesome when I made this discovery because I was paranoid it may be an issue with the mbp graphics card.

    System Preferences > Displays
    Select the "Arrangement" tab.
Drag the external monitor to the position you'd like it to be relative to the computer's own display.

  • Recent Windows 7 update causing monitor sleep problems/Windows loop in some HP desktops?

After perusing this forum, I wonder if there was a recent Windows 7 update that has been causing problems for some HP desktops and displays. My office has a 3500 Microtower desktop running Windows 7 Pro. While Windows 7 Pro is running and in use (as in, not prompted by any user-set power management option), the dual HP displays (via DVI split to VGA) will enter sleep mode ("No Signal", I believe) seemingly randomly/chaotically and without warning. No amount of mouse-waving and keyboard-smashing will wake the displays. The displays will not receive a signal after being turned off then on. Then, not immediately but after some undetermined time, the desktop hard drive light will begin to blink at a consistent 1-second interval (approximate), as though it is stuck in a loop.
My guess, based on both our office's experience and the posts I've read with the same problem (see below for links), is that this update would have become available either November 16 or 17, November 15 at the earliest.
Thank you for your attention to this conundrum!
    Aaron
One more piece, not sure if relevant: a user connected remotely in order to monitor the desktop, but detected no problems with the machine. Unfortunately, I was not able to remain with the desktop to see if the displays had shut off at any point during his monitoring.

  • InDesign causing others to print blanks pages

Okay so this is a weird issue and I'm getting no results.
My issue is simple. After I print in ID anyone else I work with prints blank pages (We're printing through a network to a device). Also cyan prints incorrectly; however that is fixed if I open the print driver from the print dialog. Now the color thing is a problem through all the adobe software (Illy, Photoshop, Acrobat). No matter which program I use cyan prints wrong. But back to the main issue, strictly ID causes others to print blank. It isn't consistent either. A single document could consecutively cause the blanks then not cause them a little later. We've tried ever print driver possible and the problem persists. Another curious behavior with ID in conjunction with Acrobat is if Acrobat is open and I try to export to .pdf from ID then both programs freeze (however no message of either not responding comes up in the activity monitor) and the preferences are erased from ID
I've spent 4 hrs on the phone with Adobe support and it's just some indian reading from a handbook asking over and over if I deleted my preferences. I've spent days with the printer manufacturer and worked with 7 of their tech specialists and even had them send out a new unit and  still the issues. I need to know if the rest of the world is seeing this. Or if this is even close to something someone has seen
So from what I'm seeing is a problem with the PostScript writing that's freaking it out but I'm not software engineer so I can't say for sure.
I'm running CC (though we still had the problems on CS6)
    OSX 1.7
    ID version 9.2.2
printer  is a Konica Bizhub 554e (it's a laser copier)
    Thanks,

I actually have created a .pdf and had others print it (a file I create in ID and export to pdf). What ends up happening is if I try to print the pdf people after me get blanks. However if someone else prints it there is no issue. I may have left out an important point I'm the only mac that uses the printer, everyone else  uses pc (and I don't know if that's an issue). I only have a postscript driver available (which is good) but i don't know what everyone else is using. I want to say in all of this i heard they have a PCL driver.
As far as the router, I'm hardwired into the network so there is no router. Konica and our IT have checked the network and ruled out that possibility (and I don't really know what that means)
But you are reaffirming the fact it is the printer and they need to fix it. And the fact that a document printed with only cyan is printed with all four colors to give me some weird off color makes me think the disconnect is between Adobe and the printer. But still so weird about the blanks.
    Thanks for the input

  • Upgrade to 10.4.7 causes severe display flicker

I am running a 15-inch MacBook Pro connected to a 23" cinema HD display.
Since the upgrade to 10.4.7, the laptop screen starts to severely flicker after approximately 3-5 minute, rendering it unusable. Moving a window around (even on the 23") will cause large amounts of flickering; the windows on the laptop screen are duplicated for a split second, and then stabilize until the next display refresh takes place.
The problem disappears after sleeping and waking up the machine, only to resurface after another 3-5 minutes.
Re-installing the 10.4.6 backup fixed the issue. The problem came back after re-upgrading to 10.4.7, and went away again after downgrading to 10.4.6 again.
Is this a 10.4.7 issue, or should I have my machine repaired?
    MacBook Pro 15-inch   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   15" MBP 2.0 GHz w/ 2GB, X1600 with 256 MB

Same problem at my end since i got the MacBook Pro 15/2.16Ghz. On connecting an external display the main screen flickers after 3-5 mins, goes purple (similar to the pics someone posted earlier) and then goes black. Sometimes it comes back for a few mins but eventually both displays freeze - the internal one goes black and teh external one retains whatever picture was on it but no mouse/kbd control is active. I opened a case with Apple 3 days ago and have been troubleshooting it with them. My next step is to revert to 10.4.6 and see if the problem ges away. An interesting twist to this is that my boss has an identical (arrived the same day) Macbook Pro running with an identical external display attached and does NOT have this problem. The difference between our instals is that i run some additional apps such as Ms Office & AdiumX.

  • ITunes Causing Desktop to Flicker

    Hi
Clicking on the Play, Next or Previous buttons (when a track is playing) cause the Desktop to flicker to grey. Tapping the right/left and Next/Previous on the keyboard has the same effect. Tapping the keys multiple times, in recognised by iTunes, the song name changes in now playing box but the desktop still only flashes once.
    Same happens in Safe Mode.

There are a number of things you could do. One would be to network the two computers and transfer your iTunes folder from one to another. You can also if you have one, use your iPod as a hard drive and move the folder with it though that would be considerably slower than computer to computer. Here are a few links that may help you out:

  • RDWeb App causes background to flicker

I am working on testing for future migration from a Terminal Server environment to a full Published Desktop set up using RD Web Access in a Server 2012.
I am currently experiencing an issue with a program that once it launches, it is causing a type of screen flicker.  Now the flicker is not automatic, in fact the flicker only occurs when you click on the actual application itself. It then causes the background
of your desktop to black out, and in some cases while opening other parts within this application it become an epileptics worst nightmare.
All other applications run fine no problems, it is just this one program that is having an issue.  The only thing that I know of that separates this application from the rest is that it is a .Net ran program.  However this application runs from a
TS 2008 R2 Desktop, and while directly logged in on the 2012 server.  The application runs correctly as well as a Published app currently from one of our 2008 R2 servers without a problem.  But from this 2012 server this application has not been
    friendly.
My test environment includes the following: All VM servers.
    1 Connection Broker Server
    1 Web Access Server/Gateway Server
    2 Session Host Servers
Testing RDWeb applications from a Windows 8 Pro Client and a Windows 7 SP1 client
Both Clients experiencing the flicker problem.
I have scoured for answers for several days, with trying different options including trying to make tweeks to Windows experience, RemoteFX, themes and other things to see if I can find a possible solution, so far I am coming up empty so I am trying to reach
out to the community to see if anyone has ran across this before or would be able to help me find a possible solution to this problem.

    Hi,
If this is for a future RDS migration I would recommend Server 2012 R2 instead if possible.
Please test from a Windows 8.1 PC and see if the problem is resolved.  If it works fine under Windows 8.1 there is a good chance that the new RDP 8.1 Client for Windows 7 will fix the issue as well when it is re-released.  Below is the link for
the Windows 7 RDP 8.1 client, it should be available again soon:

  • What is causing video to flicker?

We have exported from premiere, and burned a dvd.  The video, when we play it in dvd players, has spots where the film flickers.  It is always in the same few spots.  We have checked the "render at maximum depth" box, as suggested by some other info we've found.  What else could it be, how can we solve this?

"Render at Max Depth" likely has no bearing on the issue, and in fact should seldom be used - it is meant for videos that originate from 10-bit video sources (rare) or presentations made using a lot of high-bit-depth still images. If your material is 8-bit, then don't use that checkbox.
It's hard for us to know what "flickering" is without seeing it, can mean different things to different viewers. You might be seeing interlacing issues, or scaling issues, any number of things.
What was the source of the video? Converting 1080i to DVD is known to have issues. The "Max Render Quality" button will help with the dowscale process. If you can share more about the workflow, type of footage, maybe screen grab of the export settings from AME, that would be very helpful.
What scenes are causing problems, and what does the flickering look like? What I see commonly on the 1080i to DVD jobs is that lines that are nearly horizontal will flicker when the camera moves. Are you viewing on a computer or TV? Computer screens are progressive and will show interlace flicker from interlaced sources.

  • Mac Pro monitor keeps flicking off then on.

I am currently having a problem with my monitor flicking off then on. Mainly while gamming but other times as well. Sort of looks like the energy saver is trying to put my monitor to sleep. Takes about a second for it to come back but is very annoying. several times after it comes back the current image on screen turns into a jigsaw with the pieces mixed up. i am currently using:
ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB
    Display Type:          LCD
      Resolution:          1920 x 1200
      Pixel Depth:          32-Bit Color (ARGB8888)
      Display Serial Number:          2A92715H0K0
The graphics card is new and i had this problem before with the apple card installed so know its not that.
I actually had this problem not long after i bought the computer from next byte but they could not replicate the problem so gave me the computer back.
Flicked off then on as i was typing this. Only programs that are running are safari and itunes.

System preferences > Desktop and ScreenSaver > Screensaver pane > ( Hot Corners) ...
... make certain all controls are set to Minus, to preclude accidental movement of the mouse in to a Hot Corner from activating the ScreenSaver and thereby momentarily blanking the screen.
