InDesign CC 2014 workspace really large

I just opened InDesign CC 2014 for the first time and the entire workspace is much larger than CC was. I am on a PC, Windows 7. Everything else is fine - Word, Photoshop, etc, so I know it is not the monitor resolution. InDesign CC's workspace was so small I could hardly see it. I did not change anything, though, so 2014 could not have picked up anything I did (it did not pick up my saved workspace anyway - I had to recreate that). Any way to make the workspace tool bars and tabs smaller? Thanks.

I'm sorry, but I don't know what this means. Is this something I can do in InDesign? I did check my display settings, and it is set to 125% so that I can see the icons on the desktop. Do I need to change this back (I hope not)? Thanks.

  • Help! InDesign CC 2014 crashes and loses workspace and preferences each time

InDesign CC 2014 crashes on a daily basis (sometimes multiple times per day) causing me to lose my preferences and have to resetup  and reload my workspace... are there any fixes or is this issue even being addressed?

It's quite likely that there is a problem with the User space on your computer. Please tell us whether you're working a Mac or Windows computer.
Try creating a new user on your computer and launch InDesign from that user. On a Mac, that would be done in the Users & Groups System Preference.

  • InDesign CC 2014 Really Slow and Buggy?

Is anybody else having issues with InDesign CC 2014 running incredibly slow? I replaced my preferences file but it is still running poorly. The beach ball from hell keeps showing up every few seconds for a split second and the drop downs on the top toolbar won't stay on. Help!

Robyn, I went back to my previous version which is fine. Luckily I only worked on one job with this version. My feeling is that it is something with the cloud. It also seems to jump out of being the main screen every time I do any mouse movement. I have a feeling we aren;t the only two. Let me know if you get an answer and I will do so as well. Phoning Adobe? Thanks for the laugh.

  • How to make an index in InDesign CC 2014.1 using a topics list?

    Hi all,
I have read the long help document on how to make an index in InDesign CC 2014.1 using a topics list, and still can't work out what to do.
I have done a 548 page book, using a document for each chapter, and a book file to put them all together in the right order.
I now need to make an index at the back, as the author has many quotes throughout the book at the start of each chapter and section.
I have a list of those people quoted and want to upload this list and get the index feature in InDesign to find all instances of the name occurring in the entire book.
After reading the help document I still cannot work out how to do this.
    My questions are:
    1. Do you have to use an InDesign document as a source for the list of topics? If so, should the document be added to the book file or outside it?
It seems a bit recursive to have the list of topics in an ID document that is in the book file.
    2. Once you have uploaded the topics into the Index feature, how do you get it to look for all instances of that 'topic' througout the entire book? I can't figure that out from the help documents. What do I select? Do I do it from the Index panel? Do I highlight the text in the source document? Not sure how to do this...
    3. I need the names to list surname first of the quoted authors in the index. This command seems to be different between various editions of ID. For ID CC 2014.1 is it ctrl+alt+shift+]
    4. To make the surname show first, what do I highlight? The topic? and then do ctrl+alt+shift+] and select find all as well? Or do I have to just go through the text and manually do this and ditch the idea of uploading topics first?
I am confused as you can see and any help with this is appreciated.

Sorry 007, I really thought you were posting a trick question as on the OCP tests.
Anyway, as Justin mentioned, if you have an index on ename, it may be used when doing a comparison predicate statement with the ename value.
What it depends on are several other things: stats, how many rows in the table, use of an index hint, etc.
Rather than questioning the group on this, why not just turn on autotrace and run the query for the different scenarios.
The output will show you if it used the index, number of rows returned, blocks read, etc.
    SQL> create table emp (ename  varchar2(40));
    Table created.
    SQL> insert into emp select username from sys.dba_users;
    25 rows created.
    SQL> commit;
    Commit complete.
    SQL> set autotrace on
    SQL> select * from emp where ename != 'SYSTEM';
    Execution Plan
    Plan hash value: 2951343571
    | Id  | Operation        | Name      | Rows  | Bytes | Cost (%CPU)| Time     |
    |   0 | SELECT STATEMENT |           |    24 |   528 |     1   (0)| 00:00:01 |
    |*  1 |  INDEX FULL SCAN | ENAME_IDX |    24 |   528 |     1   (0)| 00:00:01 |
Predicate Information (identified by operation id):
1 - filter("ENAME"<>'SYSTEM')As you can see, the above used an index, even though there were only 25 rows in the table.
You can test each of your scenarios, one by one, including use of a hint.

  • InDesign CC 2014 crashes on startup, can I get CC back?

    Hi,
I discovered on the last update of my CC that I also acquired the 2014 versions. I didn't realise that I was now running 2 versions of InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. My mac is old, (that last of the 17" ones), but up until this update and additional installation of CC 2014, it was running fine. Now I cannot open an INDD file without the 'rainbow wheel of death' eventually occurring in a forced shutdown. I didn't realise I still also had my old CS5.5 Design Premium, so I proceeded to uninstall them, then the InDesign CC version as well, so I only had the most recent InDesign CC 2014 on my mac. I don't think this is a space issue, as there was at least 23GB still available with all 3 versions on my mac.
So now I have the following: Illustrator CC, Photoshop CC, and InDesign CC 2014. Now every time my InDesign CC 2014 loads up (takes forever) it freezes the mac, forcing a manual shutdown. I tried to download InDesign CC back last night but there's no link available in my CC menu.
I am running Mac OS Lion 10.7.5 - I can't upgrade my OS any further than that on the 17" model.
Processor 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Realising I have a 'vintage' model, I currently have a new one on order but until it comes I need to keep using my 17" in order to meet deadlines. Would really appreciate someone's help here.

You now know that you should never uninstall old until you are sure new works

  • Image Workflow in InDesign CC 2014?

I'm working on a 16-pg 4-color brochure that will be output as a printable PDF, which in turn will be sent to the printer.
In the past, I've always converted my high-res .jpg images to tiffs before placing them in InDesign. Is that still the preferred workflow? Also, what about placed PSD files? Do the Photoshop files need to be converted to CMYK before placing them in InDesign as well? The reason I'm asking these questions is I usually receive an error message in InDesign if it has placed RGB images, but I didn't see that warning in InDesign CC 2014. And yes, my InDesign document is setup as Print. Thanks in advance for any help with this.
    – K

If you already have JPEG images, it buys you absolutely nothing to convert them to TIFF or PSD files for placement into InDesign. Whatever lossiness that would occur already happened by creating JPEG in the first place. Note that this doesn't mean that JPEG is a poor choice, but that it doesn't improve anything to convert the file to a lossless format unless you are planning to subsequently edit the file.
No, there is no good reason to convert your RGB images to CMYK before placing the image into InDesign. InDesign can optionally convert RGB imagery to whatever CMYK color space you need for printing. However, the most reasonable and reliable place for any RGB to CMYK (or even LAB to CMYK) conversion to take place is at the RIP itself since it is only at that stage of the print production process that you definitively know what the output CMYK color space really is.
If you received any “error messages” from InDesign in the past about RGB images being placed, it was likely due to having activated an InDesign profile to check for such imagery. Such a check is not on by default.

  • Missing content exporting from InDesign CC 2014 to Flash Pro CC 2014

    Dear all,
to produce a larger number of similar animated swf's, I wanted to create all necessary text and graphic layers in InDesign CC 2014, then export as *.fla to Flash Pro CC 2014 for "bulk" animation.
Finally it should then just be a case of selecting the correct layers and publishing.
The problem: When exporting from InDesign to Flash, all layers are recognized but initially apart from the text layers they were shown as empty items without the content.
Rescaling the placed images in InDesign to be no larger than the final document helped to now also have the images when opening the exported *.fla in Flash.
I am still missing all other InDesign objects though, e.g. even a simple colored rectangular will not show in Flash.
Any help to fix this issue would be greatly appreciated. Searching for it only brought up a couple of tutorials that do not seem to have this issue.
    Best regards
    Christopher

I think that it's just a bug in InDesign. It happens with CS6 as well.

I have worked out the answer. Thank you Peter for your input.
Mac 10.10.1 Yosemite and Creative Cloud CC 2014
    1. Whilst logged into Creative Cloud, I uninstalled all Creative Cloud applictions.
    2. Logged out of Creative Cloud.
    3. Downloaded the Creatve Cloud Cleaner Tool and ran it.
    4. Rebooted.
    5. Checked all library files to make sure nothing of Adobe was left (search Adobe is a good idea).
    6. Re-ran the Creative Cloud installer.
    7. Logged in and checked Creative Cloud preferences including install language and folder. NOTE for Australia it should be ENGLISH INTERNATIONAL not North America.
    8. Installed all the Applications that I use.
    9. Tested Indesign - absolutely fine.
    10. Rebooted and tested again. All good.
I took these screen prints to show how the install folders are now different on Yosemite 10.10.1 compared to previous installs.
    Hope this helps someone. Cheers.

  • Arabic and Hebrew features InDesign CC (2014 release) not accessible

    Hello,
I need to create a lay-out with Arabic content in Indesign CC (2014 release). After checking how to go about that via the help-section (online and PDF) I have to conlude that the help does not help me any further.
It says I need to, from the paragraph panel options, set InDesign to the world-ready paragraph composer in order to have the text direction etc. features enabled. This, however, is not the case. The panel still looks like before and I get no Arabic / hebrew features.
This is the same for the character panel, wich also does not give the shown options for Character direction as shown in the Help screenshots.
I have followed all the suggestions in the help section.
I have also tried setting the default paragraph editor to World-Ready via the preferences, and then restart the program, but still no success.
    Please advise, it's urgent.

    Hi,
Every change of plugins is resetting preferences.
Each language has its own preferences. But you move or copy them manually but you might adjust them afterward, because everylanguage has not the same functionality. At least not on the same place.

    Hi William,
    It worked!
Allthough I did not understand that, from the CC panel, I should install the entire app again. Thought this would go through the preferences window, but I noticed that, when changing the App language in the preferences, the app-list in in the panel changes.
Only thing is now: all the preferences and personal workspaces are gone:-(
Adobe realy doesn't make it easy, unless you're into IT, wich i am totally and absolutely not;-)
    Antways,
    thanks for the usefull info;
    Have a great weekend

  • Bridge CC is not showing Indesign CC 2014 file previews

Bridge CC is not showing previews of InDesign CC 2014. I don't see an update for Bridge anywhere. What am I missing?

    Welcome to the forum,
Not sure if it's the issue or if it will help, but you could try purging the cache, etc..
    http://helpx.adobe.com/bridge/using/adobe-bridge-workspace.html
    Restore preferences
Numerous program settings are stored in the Adobe Bridge preferences file, including display, Adobe Photo Downloader, performance, and file-handling options.
Restoring preferences returns settings to their defaults and can often correct unusual application behavior.
Press and hold the Ctrl key (Windows) or the Option key (Mac OS) while starting Adobe Bridge.
In the Reset Settings dialog box, select one or more of the following options:
    Reset Preferences
Returns preferences to their factory defaults. Some labels and ratings may be lost. Adobe Bridge creates a new preferences file when it starts.
    Purge Entire Thumbnail Cache
Purging the thumbnail cache can help if Adobe Bridge is not displaying thumbnails properly. Adobe Bridge re-creates the thumbnail cache when it starts.
    Reset Standard Workspaces
Returns Adobe predefined workspaces to their factory default configurations.
Click OK, or click Cancel to open Adobe Bridge without resetting preferences.
If that does not help, you may try searching the Bridge forum or asking there.

  • Can't associate INDD files with InDesign CC 2014 (Windows 7)

After updating to CC 2014, I noticed that my file associations for all my Creative Cloud applications were pointing to the wrong places. I assume this is because the new updates are actually different versions of the application and installed as completely separate apps. I was able to adjust my PSD and AI files to point to their new CC 2014 counterpart just fine, but when I tried setting the file association for INDD files, I noticed that the file type did not show up in the Windows 7 control panel file association list. So, instead I went directly to an INDD file on my computer, right-clicked, selected "Open with...", clicked "Browse..." and navigated to "InDesign.exe." When I selected it and pressed OK, it failed to change the file association. Repeating the process has not helped and now the only way to open an INDD file is to drag and drop it into the workspace of InDesign CC 2014. After restarting my computer, the INDD file type is now showing up in the Windows 7 control panel file association list, but it still is not allowing me to change the association.

No, I did not. I'm running the 2014 Release version of InDesign for Windows (see screenshot below). And as far as I'm aware, Adobe has not released another update to the 2014 release version. I used to have the older version of InDesign Creative Cloud installed as well (the version right before the 2014 release), but have since uninstalled it as didn't want or need two versions of InDesign. I may just try re-installing the 2014 release version and see if that fixes things.

A client has sent me an indesign file I cannot open. She says she has updated to Indesign CC 2014. I am a CC member and fully updated my own software but cannot open the file she has sent me, not even if she saves as an IDML, how do I resolve the problem?

There are a few things to try.
First, if this file came to you vial email attachment, it could have been corrupted. Ask her to zip the file and send it again. That sometimes helps.
I suppose there's a chance that the file is already zipped, so see if that's the case and unzip it if so.
If the file name doesn't end with .indd, add it and see if that helps.
If you are double-clicking, try File>Open from within InDesign.
Last (and I know this sounds like a joke, but I've seen it many times), sometimes people attach a Mac Alias or Windows Shortcut instead of the actual file. What is the file size? If it's really small, that might be the reason.
Also, no offense intended if some of this sounds like stuff you have already tried. I don't know what you know, so I'm just spit-balling.

  • InDesign CC 2014 crashing and... why thousands of unique links?

I have issues with my version of InDesign. After working with larger files for a while, Indesign starts lagging and behaving strange and then craches. It can take 10 minutes, 40 minutes, 5 minutes - it dosen't really matter, it suddenly happens. Can this have something to do with Indesign having to deal with thousands of unique links? When I hover over the "link info" area, I typically get this message: 121 total links, 0 missing, 0 modified, 0 embedded, 3072 unique, 0 sublinks. What's with the "3072 unique" links? Are these actual links that InDesign handles all the time? Anybody else having the same problems? Any fixes?

It's the index markers in the older docs that I am using that's causing the crashing. I know that, and am already fixing. It's not that indesign crashing that's the reason for the post, it's the losing my presets and preferences and reopening to a dark interface screen that's my problem. It's just frustrating. I go to a lot of effort to get things the way I like them, which is why I want to the issue fixed.
What I need is a solution to the preference reset problem.
I have blurb book creator installed, but I'm positive this issue predates that. I believe I've had the problem since my last update, it's just now It's really getting on my nerves.

  • InDesign CC 2014 hasn't copied across shortcuts or preferences

Opened InDesign CC 2014, after getting a random update for my entire Creative Suite installing all new programs, only to find it hasn't copied across any of my shortcuts or preferences as highlighted under the 'seamless update' part of 'what's new'.
Really disappointing considering the amount of issues I've had with InDesign since the previous CC update a week or so ago.
Does anyone know of an easy fix? Or do I have to go and set-up my shortcuts and preferences again?

You can also migrate the preferences manually from Edit>Migrate Previous Local Settings.
Seamless update will bring the settings from the same locale i.e if you have InDesign CC (International English) and you installed InDesign CC 2014 (International English) then the settings will migrate but if you installed InDesign CC 2014 (North America), settings will not migrate. This feature supports previous version from CS6 onwards, so it will not work if you have CS5.5 and older settings.

  • Can't Open InDesign CC 2014

Installed InDesign CC 2014.  Tried to open the program and received error:
"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library: Runtime Error!
    Program: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CC 2014\InDesign.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information."

Given that you have had previous installations (like InDesign CS6) navigate to
    C:\Users\[user]\AppData\Local\Adobe\InDesign\Version 10.0\en_GB\Caches
and try to remove the contents of InDesign Recovery folder except for the file called RecoveryData. I also deleted InDesign ClipboardScrap files.
    Then I went to
    C:\Users\[user]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe
and noticed, that I had "Adobe InDesign" folder that contained PREVIOUS installation (9.0) and "InDesign" folder with the current version (10.0). I deleted first folder (Adobe InDesign), renamed "InDesign" to "Adobe InDesign" went into it:
    C:\Users\[user]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe InDesign\Version 10.0\en_GB
and renamed InDesign Defaults (InDesign will recreate the file during opening, but you'll probably have to backup the workspace files.)
Then with the heart in my throat I launched InDesign and it f**king worked!!!
