InDesign CC cannot save or undo

I am having issues saving files. I'm running InDesign CC vs.10 on a 2012 Mac 2.9 GHz Intel i7 with the latest OS. When I first open a doc, everything seems fine. But i I do the smallest amount of work to it, the menu options for save, save as, check in, save a copy, revert, undo and redo are all grayed out. I tried resetting the preferences, and it worked for a moment, but now I am back to the same problem; no undo, no saving. The only thing I can do to save my work is to leave it in a "twilight zone" mode of auto-recovery or export to .idml, both of which are not preferred. I am a design student with many due dates, and it is becoming a huge time sink to try to fix this. Help is much appreciated!!!

Im viewing this thread because its just happened to me again... my solution is below.
Im currently running the latest version of  indesign cc (9.2.1) on my brand new 13" macbook pro. (OSX 10.9.4)
As noted earlier in this thread, when this happens, before you give up and close in frustration,  EXPORT the file as IDML, and your all good!
Ive had this issue on several occasions using Indesign CC since October. Here are my 2 'Usual Suspects' when this occurs:
1. culprit: SUITCASE FUSION 5 – deactivate 'auto activation' from within Indesign Prefs. In some cases, i didn't even restart Indesign (much less my computer) for this to work.
(menu: INDESIGN/PREFERENCES/ SUITCASE FUSION 5 AUTO ACTIVATION PREFS (bottom of submenu list)  Uncheck the top box,  'Auto Activate....')
Im assuming this was rechecked to auto-activate after an update. Hasn't happened in a while—but sure enough, the auto-activate box was checked again.
Its a pain having to manually-activate fonts, but its alot easier than redoing a bunch of work!
2. culprit: CRASH PLAN (online backup)– actually, ive seen this happen with a couple of backup programs. I don't know that this is for sure an issue, but it did resolve the saving issue earlier this year.  I just pause backup for a few hours, then resume. Seems to be ok.
Steps i took:
Quit Indesign CC (AFTER EXPORTING the file as IDML!)
Pause backup within CrashPlan.
Restart Indesign CC.

I'm a brand new InDesign user.  Have had one class and am expected to do all types of collateral here at work.  I've opened files, started designing but when I click Save As, the whole thing freezes up.  The only way out is to cancel through the task manager.  I have InDesign CS3 running on Microsoft XP.  The same thing happens if I try Save As in Photoshop.  I am not going to be very effective if I cannot save my work.  I am in marketing and not a techie.  So if any one could help me without having to know a tremendous amount about program set up it would be greatly appreciated.

  • Cannot Save Document Leading to Serious Error in InDesign

    I'm using both InDesign CS3 and CS4 in Mac OS X 10.5.5
We recently got a new printer at work (Xerox 700 Digital Color Press). Since then, I've had major issues saving some of my documents. Immediately after printing a document duplexed, It says this when I try to save: "Cannot save the document. It may be opened by other applications. Close applications and try again. You may also use saveas to save it into a new document." If I cancel and do a save as to another location, InDesign immediately crashes saying a serious error has been detected and must shut down. The same thing happens if I close the document without saving and try to open that same file again. I've tried this with files located on our server as well as my hard drive with the same results.
Fortunately, restarting the computer resolves this problem (although only until I try printing it duplexed again). If I print it without duplexing, It will save just fine. No other applications I use are having this problem. As a temporary solution, I've been printing the job to the hold and then changing the settings on the printer to make the job duplex. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the entire creative suite as well as deleting the preferences and other settings, but none of those things have helped.

I managed to find a workaround to this problem. Hopefully this'll be useful for anyone else with this problem until the problem is resolved by Adobe.
After you close the document without saving, rename the file. When you open the file, it will open as a read-only document. Do a "Save As" to another location. You can then move the file you just saved to where it belongs. However, you won't be able to delete the previous file until you restart the computer.

  • Cannot Save File InDesign CS7

I had not used InDesign for a while on my machine.
Now, when I try to save a file I get the message:
Cannot save "Untitled-X" under a new name.
The file "DBTmpnnnnnnnnnnnn" is damaged (Error Code: 0)
    How do I correct? Thanks.

  • Indesign CS5 file keeps locking and won't save or undo

    Hi Adobe forum,
I've recently bought Indesign CS5 and I've already had two problems in two days with the software. I've got a new macbook pro.
The first problem was when exporting a file down to CS4 with the new IDML file format it kept sending it to the background export panel, but it then wouldn't process at all. This was annoying as i couldn't then save or cancel the exporting file. I found a way around this by first exporting a pdf and then exporting the IDML file... it seemed to get it all kickstarted. Please fix this bug Adobe.
The second problem I've got is: I opened an Indesign CS4 file and then saved it as a different file name. I then opened this new file and as soon as i tried to make a few changes it wouldn't let me save or undo or redo anything. This was very odd, and annoying. I checked the file info and nothing was odd and permissions was read and write. Any idea how to get around this? Is there a secret unlock / lock button that I have pressed somehow?
Let me know if anyone can help.
    Campbell

Paka222, please start a new thread for your problem. It's not the same as the year-old problem that started this thread. (Maybe someone can lock this one?)
I opened my CS3 files and then successfully saved them several times, but part way through a job, the file froze up and I couldn't undo or save. When I closed the file it asked me if I wanted to save so I said yes, but then it gave me the message that the file could not be saved. In one of the CS5.5 help sections it said to export as IDML file and then reopen the file if you are experiencing problems saving converted files. I did that but it did mess up the file a little (added drop shadows to a bunch of the photos that did not have drop shadows). I'm hoping this will fix the problem, but it isn't a consistent problem so I have to test it. Are you running any type of auto-activation plugins for fonts? I just set up my Fusion 3 font auto-activation plugin for CS5.5 this morning and the problem occurred on the same day. If the IDML fix does not work, I'm thinking it may be the auto-activation plugin since I've read about similar issues before with third party plugins.
You should try exporting your CS3 files to INX and opening that in CS5.5.
If you see a problem when you export to IDML, it most likely means that your file was corrupt from the start. I guess it could also mean you have identified a bugin the IDML export, but I think that is not the likely case.
Given that there are known issues with Suitcase interfering with some background tasks (Preflight), it's not surprising that it might interefere with another (Export).
When you open a new thread, please tell us your OS and version of InDesign as well.

  • Cancel cannot save to the file because it is in use

    Hi guys,
From a couple of days ago i cannot export ANY pdf file in InDesign withouth the "cannot save to the file because it is in use by one or more background tasks". It seems there is a "temporary files" are saving. So the trick is to delete the file from the Finder and save the PDF again. It is annoying that i cannot replace the pdf directly with the same name.
    Can i override this situation?
    Any help or ideas?
    Thanks

    Thanks for the fast reply
Actually i learn before from a forum that could be an issue so i take care so the file is not marked. Nevertheless it keeps telling me the file is in use. What could it be?
    Cheers

  • InDesign won't "Save As"

I am new to Mac, running Mac OS X version 10.6.7 on a brand new iMac, but have been using Pagemaker 7.0 for years. I upgraded to InDesign for Mac (from Windows Pagemaker 7.0) this week, and purchased InDesign CS5 Classroom in a Book to get me started. The second step of the first lesson is to save the example file with a new name. When I do so, I get the reply:
Cannot save "01_Start.indd" under a new name. the file "DBTmp4101602852866" is damaged (Error code: 0).
Any attempt to "save as" gets the same reply.
Looking back over the last 6 pages of this forum, I see nothing resembling this. Any suggestions?

Before trying the massive uninstall/clean/reinstall operation, you may want to try a couple of common Mac suggestions for fixing things like this, that I haven't seen on this thread.
    * Insert the CIB disk in the drive.
In Finder, press Cmd+Shift+U to open the Utilities folder. Run Disk Utility against the CIB disk. First run Verify Disk, to determine if there are detectible flaws on the disk. If there are, you need to request a new disk.
If you've copied the CIB folder to your hard drive, run Disk Utility on your hard drive - the Repair Permissions option is important; if permissions aren't correct, you'll not be able to perform some actions for various applications. It's common for permissions to get out of whack; it's not usually considered a sign of massive trouble, just something to check periodically. It's also common for repairing permissions not to fix some specific file/folder permissions. (see ** below) You can also run Verify Disk to discover problems, but you can't run Repair Disk from the copy of Disk Utility on the same drive you're checking, so if you need to repair your drive, you'll need to start the Mac from your Installation disk and choose Disk Utility from the File menu (maybe a different menu - I'm working from memory.)
*** In addition, if the CIB folder is on your drive, Search Google for terms like "how to change mac folder permission" without quotes, to find out how to change the permissions of the folder and its files to read/write for all users.
*** If there's any chance that the CIB folder that's copied to your hard drive was copied from a Windows computer, the problem may originate with the Windows tendency for files copied from CDs or DVDs is to retain their read-only property. Again, here you can use the info in the Google search results to fix the permissions.
If it's possible that you are using a Mac user account that's not an administrator-level account, try either changing the permissions on this user account, or restarting the Mac from an administrator-level account. For details, search Google for "setting mac administrator account" without quotes.

  • Edit image cannot save

Posted similar topic also in InDesign forum because it involves both...
Hi, have a strange problem for few days. If I edit image (PSD) in InDesign with "Edit original" command in Photoshop sometimes after editing image I get message "Could not save "C:.../......psd" because the file is already in use or was left open" when I try to save it. If I close the file in InDesign I can save the image again in PhotoShop. Happens not all of the time. I'm not working with files on server. It's just me alone...
Anybody experienced this kind of behavior?
    System Win XP SP3, InDesign 6.0.3 + Photoshop 11.0.1. (CS4)
    Claudius

You need to check with InDesign.  The message about "file is already open" means that something outside Photoshop has the file held open and Photoshop cannot save over the file.  In this case, the "something outside Photoshop" is InDesign.
Yes, other people have seen this.
But the InDesign team needs to hear about it from customers.

  • After migrating to a new MBP, when saving or opening documents, I sometimes (but not always) get a warning such as: "Word cannot save this document due to a naming or permissions error on the destination volume." Can someone please explain?

I recently migrated from a MBP with OS 10.6 to a MCB with OS 10.8. Some glitches are popping up. Here's the one on my mind at the moment:
When saving or opening documents, I get a warning such as: "Word cannot save this document due to a naming or permissions error on the destination volume." Can someone please explain?

Since this is isolated to a single file, try exporting it to Interchange Format (.inx), then open and save the resulting file as a new InDesign file.
Since the problem occurs during export, that may not be possible. Another option to try would be to copy all elements, page by page, and "paste in place" into a new document the same size. If you used layers, be sure to enable "paste remembers layers" in the layers panel menu.
This kind of problem is often indicative of an underlying font issue. You said there are only three fonts, and you should verify that in Type > Find Font... Try replacing, at least temporarily the fonts in use with something else that you know to be reliable from other documents. You might want to do this before the other steps.

  • Can anyone help me with an iWeb problem? I cannot save the site after making changes. I receive this error: "website.sites2 could not be saved"

Can anyone help me with an iWeb problem? I cannot save the site after making changes. I receive this error: "website.sites2 could not be saved"

You could try duplicating the Domain.sites2 file and launch this in iWeb. Delete the last page you edited and try saving. If that doesn't work, undo and try deleting another and so on...
If you can find the problem page you would only have to rebuild it rather than the whole site.
The other possibility is to create a new site on the same domain file and drag each page in turn down to it from the top site and try to save each time.

  • InDesign Will Not Save or Save As in CS6 or CC

This has been an ongoing problem. I have Adobe Creative Cloud. I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times, updated to new versions. ONLY problems with INDesign.
Will not SAVE or SAVE AS./
I have been forced to export as In Design Markup (IDML) file as a workaround, which is not helpful at all.
Save and Save As options are grayed out and unavailable.
ANY IDEAS anyone? I see that there are others on discussion board for this issue, but no one seems to have successfully cracked this nut.
    In Design version 9.2.2
Mac OSX 10.9.4, 3.4 Ghz Intel Core i7, 16 GB RAM, 1600 MHz DDR3. Plenty of machine.
    Thanks

    Dear Bonolgirl55,
This has been a very frustrating experience - and I know there are many others out there dealing with this same problem. I have had several email and live chat conversations with the INDesign team about this. They have not yet solved the problem (they are reportedly aware and working on a fix for future update), but we did find two workarounds to the problem.
First workaround is to export as IDML files and open that way. That is a maddening solution, you will find, and still does not allow you to UNDO or use the program to its maximum efficiency. It does help you prevent complete loss of your work however.
Second workaround -- assuming you are using a Mac -- was to create a completely new Mac User on your computer, logout of your current user, then login to new user and reopen InDesign there. When I did that, InDesign had no problems at all. It worked fine. The issue with that, of course, is that you have to make sure your files and graphics are all copied over to new user Documents file, or or otherwise accessible from a shared drive somewhere. This solution allowed me to use InDesign without any of the Save / Save As / Undo issues -- but obviously undercut workflow productivity between Adobe programs and with other files, email, etc. as I was essentially cut off from my normal desktop work environment and lacked easy toggle between Mac Users.
I am afraid that I have no other solution to offer, and I don't know when Adobe will figure this out. My problem ONLY applies to InDesign (I am a Creative Cloud subscriber). It's been very unpleasant and annoying.

  • Cannot save in newly created folders

When I connect to the SMB server thing, for some reason, I cannot save to newly created folders that my co-workers make. With I right click on the folder that my co-worker created, it says "You have custom access". And I cannot save my Indesign files in that folder. But when I create a folder, everyone is able to save in that folder. When others create a folder, they are able to save in it as well, except for me. This has never been an issue before until recently.
Do I have permission issues? I ran Disk Utility to fix my permissions but no success. Help please. I just want to save my Indesign files to the server for everyone to access.
The server we are using is the Mac Mini Snow Leopard server thing.
    Thanx!

have you tried shutting down your mac, restarting and trying again with a newly created folder. do you have the same issue then?

  • Cannot use the undo function

I just loaded Final Cut Pro onto a new computer and I cannot use the undo/redo function keys. Is there a problem with the software or do I have a setting set incorrectly.
When I go under edit, both undo and redo are grey so I cannot use. I also cannot use the short cut key.

Undo/Redo is command and Z. Are you using a different keyboard layout than US English?
You can set the number of undos from the menu bar: Final Cut Pro > User Preferences > General.
This functionality is dependent on how much RAM is installed in your computer - setting a higher number of steps backwards will use more. How much do you have installed?
Undo/Redo is only available after you have done something to the media in FCP. It is not saved in your project file. Closing a FCP project will lose any saved undo steps, although you can still use one of the Auto-saves of your project file to go back.
