Indesign CC error code 3

I tried to open a couple of files in Indesign CC, but the error code 3 apears. Is it possible to restore these files? And what is going wrong that causes these error codes?

MVCO wrote:
Yes both. These files came back from the translator. Some files were ok and five files are with the error code 3. My original files that I have send to te translator were ok.
Sounds like they were damaged in transit.

  • Indesign CS4 - error code 5

Hi I am having a problem opening InDesign files.
When I double click-file in finder (or file-open) an error message appears:
''Cannot open ''document.indd''. The file ''document.indd'' is damaged and cannot be recovered. (error code: 5)''
This has happened to 4 files which I have been working on in the past couple of weeks. Last week, when opening InDesign for one of these documents, I had a recovery message appear but as the document did not need recovering, or so I thought, I clicked no and it opened fine. This happened a couple of times until it eventually stopped.
It was Friday 11th March when I went to open one of the 4 docs and this message appeared and I have discovered another 3 docs which have the same problem today (13th March)
I have all my work backed up in my time machine to prevent any disasters like this, however even in the back-ups will not open when restored, showing the same message. I have also noticed that in time machine there are .idlk files for the corrupt documents. But these disappear when restored and I attempt to open the paired file.
I have noticed that the documents affected are 127.5 or 127.6 mb. However, some larger files are unaffected.
These files have alot of images - could this be a cause?
    I have tried:
    renaming file
    zipping and unzipping
recovering: time machine back ups are still corrupt
    resetting the indesign preferences
I would appreciate any advice on how to restore these files.
    Many thanks,
    Abby

Hi folks, just an update on the fees for the Markzware Bad InDesign File Recovery Service.
    In-Take fee = 19.- USD/EUR (non-refundable)
Recoverd File Fee = Starting at 99.- USD/EUR (based of file size)
    * The Recovered File Fee is ONLY paid if the file is recovered!
** Most bad files fall into this pricing range.
    See:
    http://markzware.com/support/faq/recover-bad-file-service/
Peter, maybe this is interesting for you and/or the Adobe engineers. 28% of the bad InDesign files we get in here at Markzware the last months, have a file size of EXACTLY either 133.7 MB or 133.8 MB. Any ideas why?

I am trying to open an Indesign CS3 file, but every time it crashes Indesign. I tried opening a copy and I get an Error Code: 4. I am running 10.5.6.
It is an important file so I would like to recover the file if possible.

Not sure if this helps but this is what worked for me.

  • Indesign 4 - Error code 5...please help!!

    Hello all,
I recently started work at a new company where I have been tasked to design their new catalogue. I got approx. 100 pages in and then yesterday morning, my indesign file suddenly refused to open stating it had 'Error code 5' and was unrecoverable.
Needless to say I have tried copying my file, renaming it, opening it with Reader Pro, changing my Indesign preferences and any other tid bit that sounded like it might work that I could find on the web, all to no avail.
I have read that this often occurs in files where images were not linked properly, but mine were. I assumed my employer backed-up his files, but it turns out that he felt this was unnnecessary and unless someone has a bright idea out there I will have to go back to a copy I happened to make but that was 10 days (and half the content) ago. Needless to say my deadline looms.....
The only ray of hope I have is apparently this problem can sometimes be fixed by converting the file to Quarkexpress and back again, but I lack the resources to do this.
If you think you can somehow fix the code or anything else that might help, I would very much appreciate it. My broken file can be downloaded from this link https://rcpt.yousendit.com/932300049/28e29def444af6141251dda6c3284dae.
    Thanks for your help.

Hello Pete and thank you for trying.
I'm not at work presently, so I can't give you the version information (I will let you know on Monday morning).
I would love to know how/ why my file become corrupted. I'm experienced enough to know to lean on apple+s every couple of minutes, but I had always assumed that a closed file was pretty much safe (unless of course the hard drive that it's stored on fries).
Thursday night I saved my file and closed it - I left Indesign running whith my employers previous catalogue (also a .indd file- but much bigger and with lots of link and font errors) open. I left my Mac running but Friday morning when I got to work the screen was displaying gray and white vertical stripes, and as I thought my file was safe (it was stored on an external Lacie hard drive and closed), I did a hard reboot.
The mac came back on, my screens functioned perfectly, I opened the old catalogue (no problem) and then tried to open my file and got the error code. The hard drive was a shared drive, hard wired to my Mac on through to the rest of the network (which only comprises a few Macs).
The anwser to how it was being backed up is 'not enough'. About a week ago, I made a back up file-just incase (which is the one I still have), but honestly believed the company to be backing up the hard drive as we store our whole image gallery on it - but apperently not :s
Ironicly, had my file not crashed, the first thing on my agenda that morning was to make another back up.
Do you think it was the hard reboot affecting the hard drive,or do you think it was the session of indesign that I had been using to create the file was still open when I rebooted?
    Thank you again!

  • InDesign CS5 Error Code 5

    Hi everyone,
I know this has been discussed before, yet I cannot find an up to date discussion. Firstly my 2.8 mb file wouldn't open this mornign due to the above error code. There are three questions I have:
    1. Why did this happen?
    2. How do I avoid this from happening again?
    3. Is there a fix for this yet?
I am a publisher and use indesign for all our published works. Generally we back up frequently with different names. Sofar we have not encountered this problem before. This time it is on a document which only had about one hour worth of work in it, still it is annoying.
    Sandra

I don't believe anyone can tell you precisely why this happened to you -- too many variables -- so it would be equally impossible to tell you how to prevent it beyond the normal good work habits stuff: Save as to remove old and useless change info on a regular basis, don't use fonts of questionalble quality or origin, try to avoid .eps if you have another choice, and of course back up regularly.
I found an old thread from last year in which Eugene Tyson and I both searched our archives and reported several thousands of files, and neither one of us remembers ever having more than one or two files fail, and none specifically with error code 5. ID is VERY reliable, even under circustances that will bring down many other programs, so if you are seeing this with any sort of frequency (like more than once in three years), I'd duspect you have a problem on your system, possibly hardware, possibly a font, or possibly your electical supply is spiking or something froom time to time and you're unprotected.
A google search for indesign error code 5 brings up a lot of discussion, some of which you might find useful, bu tthe bottoom line is probably once a file hits the level of damage that will generate an error cod 5 failure it's pretty much toast. Your best bet in such a case is the Markzware solution (run back and forth through Quark using ID2Q and Q2ID). If you don't have Quark and the plugins, Markzware will attempt recovery for you with a no results no charge policy. last I knew the fee for success was about $200. Fix Your Bad InDesign Files!

  • Adobe Illustrator and InDesign Error code 16 - Help!!!!

I installed Adobe Illustrator and InDesign on Windows 8.1. They worked great until I closed the programs and tried to open them up again. I now get the error code 16. I re-installed several times now and each time I close either one of the programs and reopen, I get the same error code 16. I've done a clean uninstall and re-install and I've followed the procedures about ensuring that file permissions were correct. No luck.

  • Indesign CS4 Database Error code 3

    Hello all,
i have a problem, i want open a indesign document that i have create for a few weeks, but wenn i will open it i get news " Coud not compete yor request because of a database error the file "xy.indd" is damaged(Error code: 3) and than Indesign Crash down.... and can´t create a .inix file.
I work on a Power mac 0S x  version 10.5.8 and indesign is version 6.0.
can somebody help me? i need this file...:)
    mfg summerjam

You may be out of luck. Do you have a backup of an earlier version?
You can send the file to Tom Donovan at Adobe (see Fix My Corrupt ID Docs) but he doesn't promise to return them fixed. he is, however, one of the people reponsible for finding out why this happens, and what to do to prevent it, so sending to him will help all of us down the road.
I believe Markzware was also offering a service where they would attempt recovery by using ID2Q to convert to a Quark document, then Q2ID to convert it back. At the time I believe it was a pay for success only service, but I don't know if they even still do it.

  • CS4 InDesign Error Code 5 - PLEASE HELP (!)

Hi, please please if any of you have suggestions to solve this problem or ANYTHING, please lend me a hand!
I tried to contact suppose-to-be open 24/7 customer service but on the phone the automated female voice tells you it is actually Mon-Friday. LOL.
    OK, here is my problem.
My computer had to be rebooted yesterday morning, nothing unusual as it often happens.
Rebooted my Mac and tried uploading few InDesign files later on in the day.
Other files that were on before rebooting restored themselves but then an Error message came up with one file,
    "Cannot open "file name.indd".
The file "file name.indd" is damaged and cannot be recovered (Error code 5)"
I am one of those Ctrl+S freaks so my work was saved before the reboot.
If the problem is within the restoring file system then why are all the other files safe and sound?
After intense googling on the matter, I suspect that it might be the size of the file.
I read a few cases where cos the file was too big, they had the same Error code 5 and lost them.
127.5MB is the size of the file but there have been no warnings previously nor was I informed that the size would cause a FATAL problem like this.
Anyway I tried out about all of the potential solutions given on Google.
    -Quit and restarted InDesign.
    -Rebooted Mac.
-Moved the file in to a portable hard drive and  tried opening from there.
-Opened from other programs such as Photoshop etc.
-Created a new computer account and re-installed InDesign.
    -Deleted and recreated InDesign Preference.
    -Tried it the next day.
    PLEASE help me...
That file happened to be THE MOST IMPORTANT one out of them all.
I spent few weeks working on that with hardly any rest or sleep.
The deadline is too close for comforts....please help.

Copy + Paste or Dragging them on to the page.
Does this make the file size too big to handle cos of all the links?
If so, why has it happened now?
Why has it not happened instantly or gave me a warning about the file size?
Thank you for the feedback, I really apprecaite it.
Even though it may mean my file's lost forever at least I know better now. Thanks.
There are no links when you copy/paste. When you say drag, do you mean from Bridge or Finder/Explorer, or from Photshop? Dragging from Photoshop is the same as copy/paste. All you get is low-res screen preview embedded in the document.
I suspect this doc may be as large as it is because it hase a lot of useless change information in it. ID save all the change info each time you hit save. When the doc is closed, that information is still retained, but is no longer usable. To reduce file size you should do a "Save As."
Have you tried deleting the recovery information and opeing the file from the menu? I don't think it will help, but it might.

  • HELP! InDesign corrupting old files ERROR CODE 5

I have had Indesign for over a year and used with no problems until about a month ago. I created a flyer, saved and closed it and when i went to reopen it i got the error message saying: the file [filename].indd is damaged and cannot be recovered (Error code 5). I was frustrated because i had to redo it, but what is even more frustrating is that it seems like this is happening to EVERY file i open and close (old or new) which means I have lost a lot of large files (books in fact) because of some problem with indesign. I desperately need help to fix this. I work on w windows 8 computer using indesign cs6.

Would the font have to be used in the document that was opened? Do you know how i find a corrupt font?

  • Incompatible with Adobe InDesign (Error code: 14)

    Hi all,
I've been having major problems with InDesign CS3 and OS 10.5. It always crashes when I try to Place, Export, Save As, anything that requires it to navigate the finder.
Now, while trying to export to PDF, the document froze. So I had to force quit it. Now ANY InDesign file I try to open gives me the error message:
The file "file name" is incompatible with Adobe InDesign (Error code: 14).
Has anyone experienced this? I'm now stuck as I cannot open anything to get some work done.
    Thanks in advance.

It qrashes before I get into the program, also when I open it throug the program Icon and not the file.
    I have tried:
    Restarting
Shot down and take out the power cord for severeal minutes
Deleting the preference files "Defaults" and "SavedData" manualy
Deleting the file "InfoPlist.Strings" in folder "itlproj" which was a folder that keept showing on restart. (it was a italian languae to a dropdown shadow throug Flash CS5)
Remove indesign CS5 and CS4 (with the program uninstall icon) and reinstalled it
